เมื่อพูดถึงการแต่งบ้าน บางคนเห็นเป็นเพียงการจัดวางเฟอร์นิเจอร์ แต่สำหรับคุณพิชญ์ กาไชย การออกแบบบ้านคือศิลปะแห่งการเล่าเรื่องส่วนตัว แต่ละมุม แต่ละพื้นที่ล้วนสะท้อนตัวตน ความคิด และประสบการณ์ชีวิต ดังนั้นบทความ Cover Story ของเราในครั้งนี้จะพาคุณไปสำรวจโลกการออกแบบและตกแต่งภายในที่ไปไกลกว่าความสวยงาม สู่การสร้างพื้นที่มีชีวิตที่เติมเต็มทั้งร่างกายและจิตใจอย่างแท้จริง

ฟังก์ชันใดที่คุณพิชญ์มองหามากที่สุดตอนตัดสินใจซื้อคอนโดแห่งนี้
น่าจะเป็นเพ็ทเฟรนด์ลี่กับลิฟต์ส่วนตัวครับ เพราะเราฝันว่าอยากมีหมาที่เลี้ยงในคอนโดได้ คืออยู่คอนโดมันดีเพราะมีสิ่งอำนวยความสะดวกต่างๆ แต่เราก็ไม่ได้อยากไขห้องแล้วเจอห้องข้างๆ เยอะๆ แล้วที่นี่ลิฟต์ขึ้นมาแล้วถึงห้องเลย ก็เลยชอบครับ

แรงบันดาลใจหรือจุดเริ่มต้นที่ทำให้คุณพิชญ์หันมาสนใจเรื่องการออกแบบและตกแต่งบ้านคืออะไร
ผมเพิ่งมารู้เมื่อประมาณสิบกว่าปีที่แล้วว่าสงสัยเราจะชอบแต่งบ้าน เพราะเอนจอยเวลาจตุจักร เวลาเดินตึกแดง เอนจอยเวลาหาของ เฟอร์นิเจอร์ เก้าอี้ โต๊ะต่างๆ ที่นำเข้า คือจริงๆ แล้วมันเริ่มจากเราชอบแต่งตัวก่อนครับ ซื้อเสื้อผ้าวินเทจ เสื้อผ้ามันก็จะมาพร้อมกับเฟอร์นิเจอร์ พอวางให้มันสวย ทีนี้เราก็อยากเริ่มเรื่องดีไซน์พื้นที่ แล้วก็พัฒนามาเรื่อยๆ ครับ

คุณพิชญ์คิดว่าการออกแบบบ้านควรสะท้อนบุคลิกและไลฟ์สไตล์ของผู้อยู่อาศัยอย่างไร
ถ้าเกิดเจ้าของบ้านคนนั้นเป็นคนที่ใส่ใจในการออกแบบบ้านจริงๆ มันจะมีคาแรกเตอร์ของเจ้าของบ้านคนนั้นอยู่มากกว่าตัวดีไซเนอร์ จริงๆ แล้วคนทั่วไปไม่สามารถออกแบบบ้านเองได้ เพราะมันต้องใช้คอมพิวเตอร์ ต้องมีฟังก์ชันในการหาว่าพื้นเอียงกี่องศา ห้องน้ำเอียงกี่องศาเพื่อให้น้ำไหลได้ ไฟต้องใช้วัตต์เท่าใดถึงจะสว่างทั่ว เพราะฉะนั้นก็ต้องใช้คนออกแบบ น่าจะคล้ายการแต่งเพลงมั้งนะครับ ที่นักร้องอาจจะไม่ได้ทำเพลงเป็น แต่ควรจะต้องไปอยู่ในกระบวนการการทำเพลงด้วย จะได้มีความเป็นตัวเองอยู่ในนั้นด้วย

แนวการตกแต่งบ้านที่คุณพิชญ์ชื่นชอบมากที่สุดคือแนวใด คุณพิชญ์มีโจทย์หรือแนวคิดใดเป็นพิเศษหรือไม่
แนวของการแต่งบ้านที่ชอบจริงๆ ไม่มีเลยครับ เคยชอบโค้งๆ ที่เห็นในคอนโดนี้ ทุกวันนี้ก็ไม่ชอบแล้ว แต่แค่มันสร้างไปแล้วจะทุบทิ้งก็ไม่ได้ ทุกวันนี้อาจจะชอบอะไรที่มันเรียบง่ายขึ้น ไม่ได้หวือหวาเท่าเมื่อ 6-7 ปีก่อน เวลาคิดโจทย์หรือแนวคิดในการแต่งบ้าน ผมจะหาจากรูปที่ไม่ใช่รูปดีไซน์บ้านหรือดีไซน์คอนโด อย่างเช่นผมทำบ้านที่เชียงใหม่อยู่ ผมก็หารูปจากพิพิธภัณฑ์ ที่มันเป็นมู้ดแอนด์โทนจริงๆ ผมว่าเวลาส่งให้สถาปนิกหรืออินทีเรีย ไม่ควรส่งรูปห้องไปเลยว่าอยากได้แบบนี้ มันจะเป็นการก็อปปี้เพสมากกว่าการที่ให้เขาดูมู้ดแอนด์โทน คู่สี รูปทรงของสคัลป์เจอร์ที่เราอยากนำมาใช้กับในบ้าน อย่างห้องนี้ผมก็มั่วเอาทุกรูปแบบเลย ผมอยากให้ห้องแต่งตัวเหมือนร้านขายเสื้อ ห้องแขกห้ามมีตู้เสื้อผ้าเพราะไม่อยากให้ใครนอนนาน ก็จะดูเป็นห้องๆ ไปครับ

มีโซนหรือห้องใดที่คุณพิชญ์ชื่นชอบเป็นพิเศษ และเพราะอะไร
จริงๆ ชอบทั้งหมด แต่ถ้าใช้มากที่สุดน่าจะเป็นห้องนอนครับ บางคนเขาชอบใช้ชีวิตในห้องนั่งเล่น ที่โซฟา แต่ผมชอบใช้ชีวิตในห้องนอน นอนดูทีวี จะทำอะไรก็ทำให้ห้องนอนมากกว่า ผมก็นั่งโซฟาบ่อยนะครับ แต่แค่อาจจะไม่สบายเท่าอยู่บนเตียง

ของสะสมที่คุณพิชญ์ภาคภูมิใจที่สุดคืออะไร มีความเป็นมาอย่างไร
ผมซื้อไปเรื่อยเปื่อยเลยครับ เคยมีเฟอร์นิเจอร์บ้าง แต่ก็ขายออกไปบ้างแล้ว เคยมีเสื้อผ้า สูท รองเท้า ภาพวาด จริงๆ ผมซื้อหมดนะ แล้วแต่ยุค รถก็ซื้อ คือจะเก็บเป็นช่วงๆ ครับ ช่วงนั้นบ้าเห่ออะไรก็จะซื้อ ทุกวันนี้ ด้วยวัยพอเริ่มโต ผมก็อยากซื้อที่ๆ แปลกๆ อยากซื้อบ้านที่แปลกๆ เก็บไว้ ตอนนี้อยากได้บ้านที่ต่างประเทศเก็บไว้บ้าง แต่ก็ไม่มีตังค์ บ้านต่างประเทศผมก็ชอบญี่ปุ่นครับ

คุณพิชญ์มีวิธีการจัดวางหรือแสดงของสะสมที่ทำให้พื้นที่ดูมีชีวิตชีวามากขึ้นอย่างไร
ต้องพยายามอย่าให้ทุกอย่างมันเข้ากันมากจนเกินไปครับ บางคนจะชอบแต่งบ้านแบบพื้นขาวกำแพงขาว ตรงนี้ดำตัดขอบเป็นเส้นตรง ห้ามเอาทุกอย่างวาง ต้องเป๊ะๆ สีห้ามแปลก แต่จริงๆ แล้ว ความที่ไม่เข้ากันมันทำให้บ้านดูมีชีวิตชีวามากขึ้น แล้วก็ใส่อะไรที่มันเคลื่อนไหว ก็จะทำให้บ้านดูไลฟ์ลี่มากขึ้นครับ

ในมุมมองของคุณพิชญ์ อะไรที่ทำให้พื้นที่หนึ่งมีเอกลักษณ์เฉพาะตัว
ใส่ความเป็นตัวเองเข้าไปเยอะๆ มันจะสะท้อนให้เห็นได้เลยครับว่าเจ้าของบ้านเป็นยังไง จริงๆ มันไม่มีถูกไม่มีผิดนะการแต่งบ้าน เรื่องสะอาดกับสกปรกอันนี้มีอยู่ แต่ความถูกผิดไม่น่ามีครับ อย่างที่นี่ ผมเองเป็นคนไม่ชอบบิลท์อิน เพราะว่าอาจจะเบื่อ การใช้เฟอร์นิเจอร์ลอยตัวเยอะๆ มันทำให้เราหมุนบ้านได้อยู่เรื่อยๆ วันหนึ่งผมอาจหมุนโซนนี้ไปอยู่ที่อื่น เปลี่ยนที่โต๊ะกินข้าว อะไรแบบนี้ มันทำได้ครับ เนื่องจากว่าเราไม่ได้ใช้บิลท์อินเยอะ แล้วก็ความที่แต่ละห้องไม่เหมือนกันนี่แหละ น่าจะสะท้อนความเป็นตัวผมได้มากที่สุด

อะไรคือความท้าทายที่สุดในการออกแบบพื้นที่อยู่อาศัย
สำหรับผมคือการหาอะไรใหม่ๆ มั้งนะครับ การหาธีมใหม่ๆ คือผมพยายามออกแบบบ้านให้เหมือนชอปแบรนด์เนมทั้งหลายที่พอเราเดินเข้าชอปแล้วรู้สึกว่า หูย! ร้านสวยจังเลย จริงๆ แล้วเราควรจะทำบ้านที่ใส่ความเป็นตัวเองไปเยอะๆ แต่ก็เข้าใจนะครับว่าการออกแบบบ้านหรือที่อยู่อาศัยมันไม่สามารถสุดโต่งได้ขนาดนั้น เพราะเราต้องอยู่กับมัน 10 ปี 20 ปี มันอาจจะเบื่อได้ง่าย ก็อาจจะต้องตั้งหมายไว้ก่อน แล้วค่อยลดความสุดลง ก็อาจจะเบลนด์ได้ลงตัว ซึ่งการหาจุดที่กลมกล่อมที่สุดนี่แหละครับ อาจเป็นสิ่งที่ท้าทายที่สุด

คุณพิชญ์มีเคล็ดลับหรือคำแนะนำอย่างไรสำหรับคนที่อยากเริ่มต้นปรับแต่งบ้านแบบไม่อยากให้งบบานปลาย
บ้านสวยไม่จำเป็นต้องแพงเสมอไป เห็นได้เยอะแยะว่าบ้านแพงไม่สวยก็มีเต็มบ้านเต็มเมืองไปหมด บ้านที่ใช้ของแพงๆ เฟอร์นิเจอร์หลายสิบล้าน แต่งออกมาก็เชยเยอะแยะ บางคนมีร้านดีไซน์เล็กๆ อยู่จตุจักรยังแต่งร้านสวยได้เลย ผมเลยรู้สึกว่า “ของซื้อได้ รสนิยมซื้อไม่ได้” ครับ

หลังจากแต่งบ้านเสร็จแล้ว คุณพิชญ์มีการปรับเปลี่ยนของตกแต่งหรือของสะสมที่วางแสดงไว้หรือไม่ อย่างไร
ไม่เคยเปลี่ยนครับ แต่แค่อาจจะเติมเข้า ทุกวันนี้ผมเริ่มประสบปัญหาอย่างหนึ่งว่าต้องหยุดซื้อ เคลียร์ของออก เพื่อให้บ้านมันคลีนเหมือนเดิม พยายามย้าย พอมีหมา จะเอาของมาไว้เยอะเหมือนเดิมก็ไม่ได้ เผื่อโดนกัดเสียหาย ผมก็เลยเริ่มเอารูปภาพไปเก็บในห้องเก็บของ เหลือไว้แต่สิ่งที่เอาไว้ได้ เดี๋ยวอีกประมาณ 2-3 เดือนผมก็จะเริ่มรีโนเวทอีกรอบแล้วครับ

คุณพิชญ์มีความคิดที่จะต่อยอดจากความชื่นชอบในการแต่งบ้านของตนเองอย่างไรบ้าง
ทุกวันนี้ที่ทำอสังหาริมทรัพย์ ทำหมู่บ้านที่เชียงใหม่ก็เริ่มจากชอบแต่งบ้านนี่แหละครับ อยากแต่งบ้านไปเรื่อยๆ จริงๆ ผมประกาศขายที่นี่ตั้งแต่วันแรกที่ย้ายเข้ามาอยู่เลย บ้านแต่งเสร็จ ย้ายเข้า วันแรกผมบอกเอเจนท์ที่แนะนำให้ซื้อที่นี่เลยว่าฝากขายด้วย เผื่อมีคนซื้อ ถ้ามีเดี๋ยวผมจะย้ายออกเลย อยากไปแต่งบ้านใหม่อยู่แล้ว ผมว่ามันเหมือนการทำรถ การทำมอเตอร์ไซค์ การทำอะไรสักอย่างที่ต้องใช้เวลาหมกหมุ่นกับมันเยอะๆ ตอนทำบ้านผมก็หมกหมุ่นกับมันเยอะ พอมันเสร็จแล้ว สวยแล้ว เพื่อนบอกว่าสวยแล้ว มันก็ไม่มีความสนุกอีกต่อไป ทุกวันนี้ก็เลยอยากแต่งใหม่อยู่ครับ

To some people, decorating is just arranging furniture. To Pitt Karchai, however, it is the art of telling your own personal story, with every space reflecting who you are, how you think, and what you have experienced in life. In our cover story this month, we take you to explore his world of interior design and decoration, which goes beyond beautifying to create living spaces that fulfill one’s physical and emotional needs.

What was top of mind for you, in terms of function, when you decided to buy this condo?
Probably pet-friendliness and a private elevator. I had dreamed of having dogs that I could keep in a condo. And although condo living offers convenience, I didn’t want to open my door to find lots of neighboring units. Here, you take the elevator straight up to your own room, and that’s what attracted me.

What got you interested in home design and decoration?
I only realized about a dozen years ago that I enjoyed decorating. I love going to Chatuchak and Tuek Daeng to look for imported furniture. Actually, I have to say it all began with my enjoying dressing up and buying vintage clothes. I usually brought the clothes home in the same haul with furniture. I’d arrange them until they looked beautiful to me. Then I started wanting to design spaces, and it all progressed from there.

Do you think home design should reflect its inhabitants’ personalities and lifestyles?
If the homeowner really cares about home design, their home will reflect more of their own character than their designer’s. The average person cannot design their own home because designing has to be done on a computer that can do things like finding the right degree of bathroom floor slope to allow proper water flow and the perfect wattage to illuminate each space. You therefore need a designer. I think we can use songwriting as an analogy. A singer doesn’t need to know how to produce a song but they should be involved in the process, so that the song will have something of them in it.

What’s your favorite decorating style and do you have a special concept in mind when decorating?
I don’t really have a favorite style. I used to like a lot of curves – as you can see from this condo. I don’t anymore, but they’re built-in and can’t be torn down. Today I like simpler things, and I am not as flashy as I was 6-7 years ago. When I am planning a decorating concept, I usually look for pictures – not pictures of a home or condo design though. I am currently decorating homes in Chiang Mai, for which I got pictures from museums to represent the mood and tone I want. I don’t think it’s a good idea to send pictures of room décor to your architect or interior designer. That would just get you a copy-and-paste job. What you should do is let your designer look at the mood and tone, color schemes and shapes you want in your home. I myself used a very random approach with this condo. I wanted my dressing room to look like a clothing boutique, and no closet in the guest room because I didn’t want my guests to stay long. I looked at each room individually.

Do you have a favorite zone or room and why or why not?
I like all the rooms, but my bedroom is my most-used space. Some may like to spend time on the sofa in their living room, but I like to live in my bedroom, watching TV in bed or doing whatever I need to do. I sit on the sofa often, but it isn’t as comfortable as being in bed.

What has pride of place in your collection of collectibles and what’s the story behind it?
I buy with no goals in mind. I used to have a furniture collection but have sold some of it. I used to have collections of clothing, suits, shoes and paintings, too. What I buy depends on where I am in life. I also buy cars and collect them periodically. I buy what I am obsessed with at a given time. I am more grown up now and want to buy uncommon properties and homes. I would love to have a home overseas, but I can’t afford to buy one now. I would love a home in Japan.

Do you have tips for displaying collectibles to make a space more lively?
Try not to make everything match. Some people like to have a white floor and white walls with linear black trims, nothing out of place and no unmatched colors. But incongruities are what add life to a home. Adding something fluid will also make your home livelier.

What, in your view, makes a space unique?
If you put a lot of yourself into it, it will become a reflection of who you are. There’s no right or wrong in decorating. There’s clean versus messy, but no right versus wrong. For this place, for example, I didn’t go for a lot of built-in stuff because I knew I could get tired of it one day. Using a lot of freestanding furniture allows you to constantly change your home around. I could move this zone to another space, move the dining table to another spot. It’s all possible because I don’t have a lot of built-in stuff. And the way each room looks different is probably what reflects who I am the most.

What’s the most challenging thing in designing a living space?
For me, probably looking for new things and new themes. I try to design homes to feel like brand-name stores where, as soon as you step inside, you are like, “Wow, so beautiful!” You should put a lot of yourself into your home, though I do understand that you can’t really go to extremes when designing a home or living space. Because, for something you’re going to have to live in for the next 10 or 20 years, it could easily become boring. You need to maybe set a goal and then gradually tone it down. This way you can achieve a balanced blend. Finding this perfect balance may be the most challenging thing.

Do you have tips or advice for those who want to renovate their home on a budget?
A beautiful home doesn’t need to be expensive. There are so many examples of expensive homes that are not beautiful. Many expensively decorated homes, with furniture worth tens of millions of baht, can and do look tacky. But some people, owners of small design stores at Chatuchak, do a beautiful job decorating their stores. This made me realize that “you can buy things, but you can’t buy taste”.

Once you are done decorating, do you rearrange or change out items you have on display?
I never do that. I might add new items, but that’s about it. The problem I have these days is, I need to stop buying and clear out stuff to return my home to the clean state it was originally. I am trying to rearrange things. Once you have dogs, you can no longer keep as much stuff around because they could damage it with their biting. I have moved my paintings into storage, leaving only what’s safe to keep around. In a few months, I will start renovating again.

How do you plan to build on your passion for decorating?
My current project, a housing estate in Chiang Mai, grew out of my passion for decorating. I wanted to continue decorating. The day I moved into this condo, I announced that it was for sale. As soon as I finished decorating and moving in, I asked the agent who recommended this condo to act as my sales agent. Had there been a taker, I would have moved out because I already wanted to decorate a new home. In a way, it’s like dressing up a car or a motorbike. It’s something you spend a lot of time obsessing on. When I am decorating a home, I obsess on it. But once it’s done and my friends call it beautiful, I no longer have fun with it. So I am feeling the decorating bug again.
