Vacheron Constantin Overseas Gets New Black Dials

For over a century, the iconic Genevan manufacturer has been producing classic minimalist pieces. Since twenty years ago, Vacheron Constantin Overseas watch has became a symbol of watchmaking pleasure geared towards travel and escapism.

Previously available in only blue or white, 2018 sees the emergence of a black dial version beautifully framed by the shimmering steel case. The sleek monotone creates the ‘iconic ‘panda’ look, popularised by the titular Paul Newman.

Both black-dialed models feature the original integrated bracelet and case design, coming in a set of steel, rubber and leather. With Vacheron’s patented quick-release system, replacement straps are easily changed by releasing the catch on the back of the strap.

The new face of Vacheron Constantin Overseas Chronograph is distinguished by a “reverse panda” dial, the first contrasting black/silver subdial option for this model. The striking white counters on black is assuredly a gorgeous face-lift that is also practical as a sports watch. The vivid colour contrast of the sub-dials improve legibility by clearly separating time-telling and elapsed time measurement.

The twin-barrel movement is powered by a 54-jewel caliber 5200, viewable through a sapphire crystal caseback. The start, stop and reset functions are activated by a strong vertical clutch, designed to endure against physical conditions. Powered with 52 hours of reserve, the dimension of the Vacheron Constantin Overseas Chronograph is moderately large – 42.5mm wide and 13.7mm thick.

The Vacheron Constantin Overseas Self-winding is a stainless-steel piece with a similar black lacquered dial, detailed with white gold indices and silver logo.

Wound by the brand’s iconic 22 carat oscillating weight and powered by a 5100 caliber. Equipped with two mainspring barrels, it is powered with 60 hours of reserve. The dimensions of the Vacheron Constantin Overseas Self-Winding is smaller than the chronograph at 41mm in diameter, and is available on a metal bracelet or the optional of leather or rubber quick change (no tools) straps.

Despite bearing the Geneva hallmark for their top-notch movement finishing, Vacheron Constantin Overseas pieces are made to be absolutely practical. Anti-magnetic and water-resistant to 150 meters, these generation of timepieces achieve the perfect blend of performance and style.

Both watches will be available in Vacheron Constantin boutiques and retailers by June 2018.

Pricing is set at $30,300 USD for the Overseas Chronograph and $20,900 USD for the three hand variant.

Born in Vietnam, Lê’s family immigrated to the US at the age of ten to escape the Khmer Rouge. In 1994, Lê travelled to Cambodia and was confronted with the stark contrast between Angkor Wat’s beautiful architecture and the horrific cruelty of Tuol Sleng, prompting him to work on the series ‘Cambodia: Splendour and Darkness’ (1998-).

Phinisi Silolona’s Sheer Ambience

Phinisi Silolona’s Sheer Ambience

Readers perusing the annual Charter Focus in this issue of Yacht Style will find anything from traditional Indonesian phinisis to the largest and latest superyachts offered at US$660,000 a week. Our waters extend from the Indian Ocean’s Seychelles, Mauritius and Maldives to the exotic seas and straits of Asia and the vast Pacific as far as French Polynesia, with superb attractions like Australia and New Zealand in between.

A few luxuriously outfitted phinisis are offered in Southeast Asian waters, and here we look at one of the favourites, Silolona. Phinisis were the inter-island trading vessels of the Indonesian archipelago, by far the world’s largest, and indeed they still exist in commercial roles, lining up at Jakarta’s Sunda Kelapa to discharge cargoes. “Bugis boats” was the old terminology.

But Silolona is an entirely different luxury phinisi based in Bali for voyages to exotic eastern isles like Komodo and Flores, Raja Ampat, and as far as the legendary Banda Spice Isles. When the monsoon changes, as it does every year, the vessel moves to Phuket, and can be found from Malaysia’s West Coast tourist isles like Penang and Langkawi to the azure Andaman Sea and beyond to Burma’s far south Mergui archipelago.

It is a different experience, but a very rewarding one. Making passage on a phinisi should be on everyone’s bucket list.

Own the home of America’s most infamous Mobster, Al Capone

Created in 1919 by developer developer Locke Highleyman, Palm Island is revered as one of Miami Beach’s most luxurious man-made islands. It was later bought by prohibition-era gangster Al Capone in 1928, where he died at in 1947.

Located in the exclusive Miami Beach’s Palm Island, the ex-sunshine retreat of Al Capone sits on the waterfront of Biscayne Bay. With 24 hours security surveillance, Palm Island is a sophisticated yet peaceful luxury residential area.

In 2013, the villa underwent a multimillion-dollar renovation after Miami-based MB America bought it for $8 million. The villa is now released onto the market, priced at US$14.9 million.

The vivid history and glamour of the villa has set it as one of the most exclusive scene for a wide range of photo and video productions. In fact, after the estate was unveiled in 2015 after renovations, it was announced as a production, filming and photo shoot venue.

Composed by 3 buildings, the property houses four-bedrooms, a 6,100-square-foot main house, and a two-story pool cabana. There is also a spacious guesthouse with two bedrooms and a bath, converted from the original gatehouse Capone installed. The main villa also features the original black and gold Art Deco powder room, ceiling lights from the 1920s, an original fireplace and porch. The 30,000-square-foot property has about 100 feet of waterfront.

The Italian family that currently owns Capone’s former Miami house has also owned other event venues and retreats in the area, including the Orchid House, a Mediterranean villa at 1350 Collins Avenue in Miami Beach.
