หากกล่าวถึงเมืองหลวงของไทย ร้อยทั้งร้อยน่าจะตอบได้ว่า กรุงเทพมหานคร เมืองที่มีชื่อเต็มยาวที่สุดในโลก แล้วหากเป็นเมืองหลวงของออสเตรเลีย คำตอบแรกที่ผุดขึ้นมาในใจคุณจะใช่ ซิดนีย์ หรือเปล่า หากใช่คุณอาจต้องแปลกใจ เพราะเมืองหลวงของออสเตรเลียจริง ๆ แล้วไม่ใช่ซิดนีย์แต่อย่างใด และในความเป็นจริง ยังมีเมืองสำคัญอีกหลายเมืองที่คนมักเข้าใจผิดว่าเป็นเมืองหลวงของประเทศ และแทบไม่รู้จักชื่อเมืองหลวงที่แท้จริงของประเทศนั้น ๆ เลยเสียด้วยซ้ำ
ซิดนีย์ไม่ได้เป็นเมืองหลวงของประเทศออสเตรเลีย

เจนีวาและซูริคไม่ได้เป็นเมืองหลวงของประเทศสวิตเซอร์แลนด์
ซูริค เป็นเมืองใหญ่ที่สุดและมีประชาการมากที่สุดของสวิตเซอร์แลนด์ มีความสำคัญทั้งในแง่อุตสาหกรรม การค้า การลงทุน การศึกษา และวัฒนธรรม ส่วนเจนีวา คือเมืองใหญ่อันดับสองรองจากซูริค ได้ชื่อว่าเป็นศูนย์กลางทางการเงินและการทูต เพราะเป็นที่ตั้งขององค์กรระหว่างประเทศกว่า 50 องค์กร เช่น องค์การสหประชาชาติ องค์การอนามัยโลก ทั้งยังเป็นบ้านเกิดของนาฬิกาแบรนด์หรูระดับตำนาน รวมถึงเป็นสถานที่จัดงานนาฬิการะดับโลกอย่าง Geneva Watch Days และ Geneva Watch Auction จนได้รับสมญาว่า เมืองหลวงแห่งนาฬิกา
แท้จริงแล้ว สวิตเซอร์แลนด์ไม่มีการสถาปนาเมืองหลวงอย่างเป็นทางการ แต่ในทางปฏิบัติถือว่ากรุงเบิร์นเป็นเมืองหลวงและศูนย์กลางการปกครองประเทศ เนื่องจากเป็นจุดเชื่อมระหว่างภูมิภาคที่สื่อสารด้วยภาษาเยอรมันและภาษาฝรั่งเศส โดยคำว่า “เบิร์น” เป็นภาษาเยอรมันโบราณ แปลว่า “หมี” ที่กลายมาเป็นสัญลักษณ์ของเมืองมาจนถึงทุกวันนี้ กรุงเบิร์นมีสถาปัตยกรรมที่เก่าแก่และงดงาม โดดเด่นด้วยน้ำพุ อาคารกำแพงหินทราย ถนนโบราณเส้นแคบ ๆ ที่ยาวถึง 6 กิโลเมตร จนได้ขึ้นทะเบียนเป็นเมืองมรดกโลกทางวัฒนธรรมเมื่อปี ค.ศ. 1983
รีโอ เดอ จาเนโรไม่ได้เป็นเมืองหลวงของประเทศบราซิล
หลายคนเข้าใจว่าเมืองหลวงของบราซิลคือ รีโอเดจาเนโร หรือที่มักเรียกว่า รีโอ ซึ่งอันที่จริงก็ไม่ได้ผิดไปเสียทั้งหมด แต่อาจต้องปรับฐานข้อมูลในหน่วยความจำใหม่สักหน่อย เพราะเมืองชายฝั่งอย่างรีโอเดจาเนโรเป็นเพียงอดีตเมืองหลวง ส่วนเมืองหลวงในปัจจุบันคือกรุงบราซิเลียซึ่งถูกวางผังเมืองไว้อย่างเป็นระเบียบและขยับเข้าไปในแผ่นดินมากกว่า เพื่อให้ดูแลความปลอดภัยได้สะดวกขึ้น กระจายความเจริญได้ทั่วถึงขึ้น และเพื่อแสดงออกถึงความหวังและความก้าวหน้าของประเทศ “บราซิเลีย” เป็นภาษาละติน แปลว่า “บราซิล” แม้จะถูกสถาปนาให้เป็นเมืองหลวงของประเทศมาตั้งแต่ปี ค.ศ. 1960 แต่อาจเพราะรีโอเดจาเนโรเคยเป็นเมืองหลวงมานานเกือบสามศตวรรษ และมีชื่อเสียงในด้านการท่องเที่ยว ทั้งเป็นที่จัดเทศกาลคาร์นิวัลสุดอลังการ และเป็นที่ตั้งของ “กริชตูเรเดงโตร์” รูปปั้นพระเยซูขนาดใหญ่ที่สุดในโลก หนึ่งในเจ็ดสิ่งมหัศจรรย์ของโลกยุคใหม่ จึงไม่แปลกที่ผู้คนจะยังมีนครรีโอเดจาเนโรเป็นเมืองหลวงในภาพจำ
ดูไบไม่ได้เป็นเมืองหลวงของสหรัฐอาหรับเอมิเรตส์
ดูไบ อดีตเมืองประมงขนาดเล็กที่กลายมาเป็นมหานครกลางทะเลทรายแสนศิวิไลซ์ ปัจจุบันเต็มไปด้วยตึกสูงระฟ้าหน้าตาหรูหราทันสมัย แต่ก็ยังสามารถพบเห็นสิ่งปลูกสร้างอันทรงคุณค่าทางประวัติศาสตร์ได้ทั่ว ดูไบมีประชากรมากที่สุดในประเทศ โดดเด่นทั้งด้านธุรกิจและการท่องเที่ยว เนื่องจากเป็นเมืองหน้าด่านในด้านการเดินทางและการขนส่งสินค้าระดับโลก เมืองหลวงที่แท้จริงอย่างอาบูดาบีนั้นถูกสถาปนาเป็นเมืองหลวงเมื่อปี ค.ศ. 1971 โดยมุ่งเน้นให้เป็นเมืองศูนย์กลางการเมืองการปกครองและเศรษฐกิจ ในช่วงต้นศตวรรษที่ 20 อาบูดาบีมีประชากรแค่ประมาณ 6,000 คนเท่านั้น แต่หลังจากกลายเป็นแหล่งผลิตน้ำมันและก๊าซธรรมชาติที่สำคัญ สร้างรายได้มหาศาล อาบูดาบีก็ก้าวสู่เมืองที่มั่งคั่งเป็นอันดับต้น ๆ ทั้งยังเป็นเมืองที่ปลอดภัยที่สุดในโลกด้วย
โตรอนโตและแวนคูเวอร์ไม่ได้เป็นเมืองหลวงของประเทศแคนาดา
โตรอนโตเคยเป็นเมืองหลวงในครั้งที่แคนาดายังเป็นอาณานิคมของสหราชอาณาจักร ปัจจุบันเป็นเมืองใหญ่ที่สุดของแคนาดา มีความสำคัญทั้งทางด้านธุรกิจ การเงิน ศิลปะ และกีฬา และได้ชื่อว่าเป็นหนึ่งในมหานครที่มีความหลากหลายทางวัฒนธรรมมากที่สุดในโลก ส่วนแวนคูเวอร์ ก็เป็นเมืองใหญ่ที่สุดบนชายฝั่งตะวันตกของแคนาดา และใหญ่อันดับสองรองจากโตรอนโต โดดเด่นด้วยทัศนียภาพที่งดงามและอากาศที่เย็นสบายตลอดปี ทำให้เป็นที่รู้จักแพร่หลายในหมู่นักท่องเที่ยว อีกทั้งยังติดโผเมืองที่น่าอยู่ที่สุดในโลกแทบทุกปี จริง ๆ แล้ว เมืองหลวงของแคนาดาคือ ออตตาวา โดยสมเด็จพระราชินีนาถวิกตอเรียทรงเลือกให้ออตตาวาเป็นเมืองหลวงของแคนาดาเมื่อปี ค.ศ. 1857 เนื่องจากอยู่ในชัยภูมิที่ป้องกันการรุนรานได้สะดวก นอกจากจะเป็นศูนย์กลางทางการปกครองและมีสถานทูตกว่า 130 ประเทศแล้ว ก็ยังเป็นที่ตั้งของหอศิลป์แห่งชาติแคนาดา พิพิธภัณฑ์อารยธรรมแคนาดา และพิพิธภัณฑ์สงครามแคนาดา จนได้ชื่อว่าเป็นศูนย์รวมศิลปะวัฒนธรรมนานาชาติด้วย

You may be surprised that some of the best known cities are not the capital of their country.

Everyone knows that Bangkok is the capital of Thailand with the longest full name in the world. How about the capital of Australia, probably the first city that comes to mind would be Sydney, right? If so, you would be surprised that it is not. In fact, there are quite a handful of cities that people have mistakenly assumed to be the capitals while those real ones are rarely be known.
Sydney is not the capital of Australia.
Sydney is Australia’s largest city and considered to be one of the most developed cities in the country. It is the center of economics and culture; and is home to the iconic Sydney Opera House, a UNESCO World Heritage-listed modern architectural masterpiece that attracts millions of visitors each year. Due to its prominence, people often presume it to be the capital instead of the less familiar Canberra, where the Seat of Government Bill, confirming it as the nation’s capital, was passed by the Parliament in 1908.
Canberra is a small city built specifically to serve as the administrative center of the country. The city plan is meticulously designed with the concept of Garden City Movement, divided into residential area, industrial area, and agricultural area where green spaces scattered throughout the city allow residents and visitors an easy access to nature. Canberra will definitely give you the simplicity and serenity vibes as opposed to those so called crowded and hectic capitals.
Neither Geneva nor Zurich is not the capital of Switzerland.
Zurich is Switzerland’s largest and most populous city. It is important in terms of industry, trade, investment, education, and culture. Geneva, a financial and diplomatic center, is the second largest city in the country where more than 50 international organizations such as the United Nations and the World Health Organization located. More importantly, Geneva is also known by its nickname “Capital of Watches”. It is the homeland of legendary luxury watch brands and a venue for world-class watch events including Geneva Watch Days and Geneva Watch Auction.
In fact, Switzerland does not have an official capital city. However, in practice, Bern is the city serving as the administrative division because of its location that sits in the heart of the country embracing the German speaking region with the French speaking region. The word “Bern” is the ancient German meaning “bear”; hence bear has become a symbol of the city to this day. Bern is famous for its beautiful medieval architecture, boasting sandstone-walled buildings, stunning fountains, and 6 kilometers of arcades. Bern’s well-preserved medieval old town was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1983.
Rio de Janeiro is not the capital of Brazil.
Many people recognize Rio de Janeiro, or Rio as it is often called, as the capital of Brazil. Well, that is not entirely wrong. This coastal city used to be the capital of Brazil before being replaced by Brasilia. Brasilia was neatly planned in a scheme to move the capital from Rio de Janeiro to a more central location that easier to be managed. This interesting capital is a symbol representing hopes and modernity of the country.
‘Brasília’ is Latin for ‘Brazil’, although the city has been established as the country’s capital in 1960, but many people still feel that Rio de Janeiro is indeed the capital because it had been the capital of Brazil for nearly three centuries. In addition, Rio is a renowned tourist destination. It hosts the most spectacular Carnival festival, and is the location of Cristo Redentor, the world’s largest Jesus’s statue which is one of the Seven Wonders of the Modern World.
Dubai is not the capital of the United Arab Emirates.
Dubai, a former small fishing town transformed metropolis in the middle of a civilized desert. Nowadays, it is full of modern, luxurious looking skyscrapers, however, some historical buildings can still be seen. Dubai has the largest population in the country. Acting as a frontier city for international transportation and shipping, it is well known for its strong business and tourism industries.
Abu Dhabi was established as the capital of the UAE in 1971 with an aim of being a political, administrative, and economic center. At the beginning of the 20th century, Abu Dhabi had only about 6,000 inhabitants. Later on, it has become a major oil and natural gas provider, generating a substantial income enabling the city to be one of the wealthiest and safest cities in the world.
Toronto and Vancouver are not the capital of Canada.
Toronto was the capital when Canada was a British colony. It is now Canada’s largest city and is the center for business, finance, arts, and sports. It is also considered as one of the most culturally diverse metropolises in the world while Vancouver is the largest city on Canada’s west coast and the second largest city in the country. It is well loved by tourists for its charming scenery and cool weather all year round. Vancouver is also listed as one of the most livable cities in the world almost every year.
Ottawa was hand picked to be the capital by Queen Victoria in 1857, because of its geographical advantage that could hardly be invaded. Not only serving as the administrative center but it is also a home to more than 130 embassies. The National Gallery of Canada, Canadian Museum of Civilization, and the Canadian War Museum are all located in this capital; thus, it is praised to be a center of international art and culture city of Canada.
