หากคุณเป็นเด็กยุค 90 น่าจะเคยได้ยินเนื้อเพลงที่ร้องว่า “ให้โลกเราสวยพวกเรามาช่วยกัน รับรู้ด้วยกันแล้วทำให้โลกนี้สดใส…” ซึ่งเป็นส่วนหนึ่งของบทเพลงที่ชื่อว่า “โลกสวยด้วยมือเรา” ที่เปิดตัวครั้งแรกใน ‘คอนเสิร์ตเอิร์ธเดย์’ หรือ ‘คอนเสิร์ตวันคุ้มครองโลก’ ที่จัดขึ้นเมื่อวันที่ 21 เมษายน พ.ศ. 2534 ถือเป็นครั้งแรกที่ประเทศไทยจัดคอนเสิร์ตใหญ่เพื่อสิ่งแวดล้อมซึ่งมีผู้เข้าชมนับแสน และบทเพลงนี้ก็ได้กลายมาเป็นเพลงสัญลักษณ์แห่งการอนุรักษ์โลกของไทยเรื่อยมานับจากวันแรกที่ถูกเผยแพร่สู่สาธารณชน
Earth Day หรือวันคุ้มครองโลก ตรงกับวันที่ 22 เมษายนของทุกปี ก่อตั้งอย่างเป็นทางการโดยโครงการสิ่งแวดล้อมแห่งองค์การสหประชาชาติ เมื่อปี พ.ศ 2513 โดยมีการจัดกิจกรรมครั้งแรกที่ประเทศสหรัฐอเมริกาภายใต้การผลักดันของเกย์ลอร์ด เนลสัน อดีตผู้ว่าการรัฐวิสคอนซินและนักสิ่งแวดล้อมที่ได้รับสมญานามว่า ‘ผู้ว่าการนักอนุรักษ์’ และเดนิส เฮย์ส นักเคลื่อนไหวรุ่นใหม่ที่กลายมาเป็นนักกิจกรรมด้านสิ่งแวดล้อมคนสำคัญในเวลาต่อมา รวมถึงทีมนักอนุรักษ์อีกหลายสิบชีวิต
จุดประสงค์ของวันคุ้มครองโลกนั้นก็เพื่อเฉลิมฉลองการเคลื่อนไหวและกิจกรรมที่ได้ทำเพื่อโลกและสิ่งแวดล้อม รวมถึงกระตุ้นการตระหนักรู้ และสร้างจิตสำนึกในการอนุรักษ์ธรรมชาติให้กับประชากรทั่วโลก ผ่านการจัดกิจกรรมในหลายรูปแบบ เช่น กิจกรรมสัมมนา การประชาสัมพันธ์ คอนเสิร์ต การปลูกต้นไม้นับสิบล้านต้นต่อปี เพื่อส่งเสริมให้เกิดความยั่งยืนทางด้านสิ่งแวดล้อมมากที่สุดเท่าที่จะเป็นไปได้ เนื่องจากโลกนั้นเปลี่ยนแปลงไปทุกวัน และปัญหาสิ่งแวดล้อมได้กลายมาเป็นหนึ่งในปัญหาใหญ่ที่ส่งผลกระทบต่อการดำรงชีวิตของประชากรโลกเป็นอย่างมาก
วันคุ้มครองโลกมีสัญลักษณ์อย่างไม่เป็นทางการเป็นธงพื้นสีน้ำเงิน ตรงกลางเป็นรูปโลกที่ถ่ายโดยนักบินของยานอพอลโล 17 และมีธีมหรือหัวข้อในการเฉลิมฉลองที่แตกต่างกันไป อย่างธีมวันคุ้มครองโลกในปี 2024 คือ “Planet vs. Plastics” ซึ่งรณรงค์ให้ทุกภาคส่วนทั่วโลกลดการผลิตพลาสติกลงให้ได้ 60% ภายในปี พ.ศ. 2583 และเลิกใช้พลาสติกแบบใช้ครั้งเดียวทิ้งอย่างเต็มรูปแบบภายในปี พ.ศ. 2573 เนื่องจากมลพิษพลาสติกและขยะพลาสติกเป็นภัยคุกคามต่อสุขภาพของมนุษย์ รวมถึงสิ่งมีชีวิตอื่น ๆ และสิ่งแวดล้อม

If you were born in Thailand in the ’90s, you are probably familiar with the lyrics: “To make our world beautiful, let’s do it together. Be aware and brighten the world together…” which come from the song called “The world is beautiful in our hands”. The song was performed for the first time at the ‘Earth Day Concert’ held on April 21, 1991., which was also the first time that Thailand organized a large-scale environmental concert with hundreds of thousands of spectators. Since then, this song has become a symbol of Thailand’ s effort for earth conservation.
Earth Day is celebrated on April 22nd annually, originated by the United Nations Environment Program in 1970. The event was first organized in the United States under the initiative of Gaylord Nelson, the former governor of Wisconsin and a well-known environmentalist who has been praised as “The Conservation Governor”; Denis Hayes, a young activist who later became a prominent environmentalist; and a team of dozens of conservationists.
The purpose of Earth Day is to commemorate and honor the achievements of environmental movements and activities including raising awareness of nature conservation among all earth citizens through various activities and events such as seminars, public relations, concerts, tree planting campaign, etc. As we are facing more and more environmental issues which greatly impact all lives on earth, we need to take immediate actions in order to have a better and sustainable environment.
Earth Day is unofficially symbolized by a blue flag with the earth image taken by an Apollo 17 astronaut in the center. In 2024, the theme “Planet vs. Plastics” underscores the imperative for collaborative efforts to reduce plastic production by 60% by 2040, and fully phase out the use of single-use plastics by 2030, as plastic pollution and plastic waste pose a threat to human beings, other living beings, and the environment as a whole.
