Blancpain goes beyond the perpetual calendar as we know it with the Villeret Traditional Chinese Calendar model – quite possibly the only watch company to offer such a specific complication.
Apart from the regular hour, minute and date hands, the most easily understandable feature on the white grand feu enamel dial is the zodiac sign window at 12 o’clock. This disc advances once a year to show the animal symbol for the current year. Therefore, it will take as long as 12 years to complete one revolution. Immediately below this window is a subdial for the 120-minute Chinese hours of which there are 12, beginning with the hour of the rat from 23:00 to 00:59, the hour of the ox from 01:00 to 02:59, and so on until the hour of the pig from 21:00 to 22:59.
Moving slightly downward, the subdial at nine houses the hands depicting the Chinese lunar days and months. To the right at three o’clock, a single hand indicates both the yin/yang and the five elements of wood, fire, earth, metal and water. Finally, the moon phase window is tucked in nicely just above the Blancpain logo to tie everything together. To set these indications, Blancpain has provided five of their unique under-lug correctors. This patented Blancpain invention offers absolute ease of operation without the use of a correction tool.

This Chinese calendar indication reflects a product that took five years to research and develop. The self-winding 3638 movement in this 45 mm red gold watch features, among its 469 parts, a guilloche winding rotor. Its 7-day power reserve is stored in three series-coupled barrels with high-performance springs inside. Each movement is assembled and adjusted by a single master watchmaker in Blancpain’s Grandes Complications workshop in Le Brassus.
