Review: Panerai Luminor Due 3 Days Automatic

0

Panerai has been consistently making its own movements for more than 10 years now. One of the most surprising calibres – apart from the outstanding P.2005/MR – is the P.4000 released two years ago. This self-winding movement comes with an off-centred micro-rotor, a component used almost exclusively to reduce overall height. The micro-rotor allows for reduced movement height because it is set into the movement instead of sitting on top of it. With a thickness of only 3.95mm, it is not quite the thinnest on the market, but it is more than capable of allowing Panerai to produce more slender timepieces, which begs the question: Why is Panerai making slender timepieces?panerai-calibre-p-4000-white
The ample proportions of the Luminor, Panerai’s undisputed flagship, are a source of pride and pleasure for collectors. Indeed, many are especially proud to wear the chunky 47mm models. There, however, remains a segment of watch aficionados who relish a Luminor that is not only stylistically accurate but also extra elegant. It is for these individuals that the new Luminor Due is created.

Up to 40 per cent slimmer than some Luminors, the Luminor Due 3 Days Automatic stands at just 10.7mm in height. Again, this does not make it the thinnest watch on the market, but compared to the average Luminor or Luminor 1950, the difference in thickness simply cannot be overlooked.

There are two variations of the Luminor Due 3 Days Automatic: PAM674 in steel and PAM675 in red gold. Both are fully polished, further emphasising the elegant notes of the watch, and come with dials finished with a satiné soleil treatment, in black for the steel piece and anthracite grey for the red gold. The sandwich construction allows Super-LumiNova to peek through the stencilled indexes and numerals. Apart from a small seconds sub-dial at nine o’clock, the dial keeps clutter to a minimal – just the way Panerai aficionados like it.panerai-calibre-p-4000-back

Further distinguishing PAM674 from PAM675 is the movement decoration. Through the sapphire crystal case back, it is immediately apparent that the red gold piece contains a beautiful partially skeletonised movement, as well as an oscillating weight in 22K red gold decorated with a traditional clous de Paris pattern. On the other hand, PAM674 has the regular P.4000 with industrial-style finishing.
Named Luminor Due because it is perceived as “Part Two” of the Luminor story, these watches are best appreciated on the wrist, as this is where their unique allure truly becomes tangible.

Pierre Berge Library Auction By Sotheby’s: Part Two

0

As we announced a few months agoPierre Berge, the co-founder of the Yves Saint Laurent fashion empire has auctioned off the second part of his library in Paris. The private collection, which was made up of 376 works, is estimated to be the most valuable and has raised five million euros. Under the care of auction house Sotheby’s, rare first editions of classics of 19th century European literature including signed books by French greats such as Balzac, Hugo, Stendhal and Baudelaire.

Two pieces by Gustave Flaubert went under the hammer. The first, was a handwritten manuscript that sees the whole passages of the novelist’s travelogue “Over the Fields and over the Shores”, scratched out. The travelogue that earned 537,880 euros, was an account of his tour of France’s Loire and Brittany regions in 1886. The second was an original edition of Flaubert’s masterpiece “Madame Bovary” that sold for nearly twice its estimate at 190,369 euros.

However, the top earner from the two-day sale was for the manuscript of Stephane Mallarme’s “Noces d’Heriodiade”. The manuscript about the marriage of the biblical character Salome’s mother, sold for 587,720 euros. The sale adds to the 11.7 million euros that had been raised by the French philanthropist last year from first part of his collection. With four more sales of the library planned for next year, the collection is expected to be worth over 30 million euros. The proceeds of the auctions will be given to a foundation set up by Berge with Saint Laurent.

Pitti Uomo 91: Focus On Italian And Asian Designers

0

Since 1972, Italian event organization Pitti Immagine has held some of the world’s most exciting events in the fashion industry. Pitti Uomo festival series, dedicated to men’s clothing, takes place twice a year in Firenze.

For the occasion sponsored programs are launched thanks to which upcoming designers and labels can get a chance to be seen on the international stage.

One of those, called Pitti Italics, which aims to help Italian-based creators  while supporting the country’s economy at the same time. A handful of selected designers – the list has just been revealed – will have the honor to showcase their creations to investors and decision-makers during Pitti Uomo 91, taking place in Florenza in January 2017.

A bit about the lucky creators: Tuscan designer Carlo Volpi, who won the “Who is on next? Uomo” title in 2016, is the first to appear on the bill. Known for his unisex knitwear pieces characterized by bold colors and eclectic patterns, the designer, who launched his brand in 2014, will present his latest collection at Pitti Uomo. He will be joined by Lucio Vanotti, a minimalist designer who put on a catwalk show at the latest edition of Pitti Uomo in June, and by Sansovino 6, a knitwear brand founded by US designer Edward Buchanan.

Pitti Immagine has also teamed up with Japan Fashion Week Organization on a two-year deal that will see the event focus on emerging Japanese talent, and with KOCCA, a South Korean government agency supporting national creativity, on brands that are breaking into the industry in the Asian nation.
As a result, the upcoming show will feature Sulvam, a budding Japanese menswear brand founded by Teppei Fujita, who won the “Tokyo Fashion Award” in 2014. South Korean brand BMUET(TE), a finalist in the 2012 WGSN Global Fashion Awards, known for blending luxurious fabrics and unconventional structures, will also make an appearance, alongside fellow South Korean label Ordinary People, which has been shown on the catwalk seven consecutive times at Seoul Collection.

In October it was revealed that fashion designer Paul Smith would launch his new PS by Paul Smith collection at the upcoming trade show, in the context of his role as ‘Special Guest’.
Pitti Immagine Uomo 91 will run from January 10-13.
