Tag Heuer Carrera-Heuer 02T

Mother knows best but Dads know the rest. We scratch our heads and scramble each year wondering what to get for the woman in our life who has given us life and instilled in us a level of common sense that would have escaped even the best of us. Since we’ve given Mum a little love this Mother’s Day, let’s turn our attention to the steadfast superheroes who never fail to cheer us on. With Father’s Day a little over a month away, we want to avoid the usual melodramatic meltdown that we faced just a week ago in trying to figure out what to get the man in our life.

That special man may or may not share a biological relationship with you but should he have left a positive influence in your life and tie with your mother as your No.1 supporter, then there is no better reason to celebrate his presence than on Father’s Day. Sometimes, getting him a necktie or cufflinks may not be the best way to repay him for those times he taught you how to ride a bike or for taking your side during a fight with Mum. Instead we present you with a few suggestions that would be a unique way to say “Thanks!” to your superhero and partner in crime.

Whisk Dad away on a father-child vacation

After years of sponsored your trips, treat the man that has been toiling away to give you the best with a fancy getaway! For some private zen time with Papa, consider jetting to the Ritz Carlton Bahrain. With a private marina and a magnificent beachfront view, treat the King in your life to a taste of luxury living. Other than the amazing sights and facilities, the Ritz is also home to eleven stunning restaurants, perfect for the Dad with a huge appetite!

If you’re looking for somewhere closer to home, hop over to the COMO Metropolitan Bangkok for a weekend of wellness. Home to the exquisite COMO Shambhala Urban Escape, we’re sure Dad will love a massage or two to ease his weary bones. On top of that, surprise Dad with a dinner at Nahm — one of the world’s best restaurants — located right on the Hotel’s premises!

For the Dad who’s always on time (or late)

If you’re the one with a dapper Dad, try the classic vintage inspired Drive de Cartier. This watch is such a timeless piece that we’ve covered it in last year’s gift guide as well, hop on over to see the full specifics. If you want a little more quirkiness, what about Tag Heuer’s Carrera-Heuer 02T? At an extremely affordable price for a tourbillon, the 02T comes sleek in un-coated titanium lugs and a black alligator straps. What’s more, the watch is water resistant to 100 metres, perfect for the modern adventurous father.

Whiskey for the Dad that wants to unwind

Wiggle your way into favourite child status with some whiskey! Macallan Edition No. 2 is the follow up to Macallan Edition No. 1, and is better than ever with the essence of seven hand-picked oak casks. The whiskey has notes of fruity richness and spices, making it the perfect drink after a long day at work. With an inviting shade of gold, there is no better trophy than this for the No. 1 man in your life.

For something that will really shoot you straight to the top of the fave child list and leave your siblings green with envy, check out the Theo Fennell USA Space Shuttle ARES V Tequila Set. Artfully created by the fine jeweller, the unique set features a handmade model of the USA ARES V Space Shuttle. The interesting thing about this are the six shot glasses, measures, side burners for salt and a base for lemon wedges that form the model!

Grooming products for Dad to stay fresh

Mr Burberry Eau de Parfum and grooming products

Everyone loves a good scent! Gift Dad with Burberry’s Mr. Burberry Eau De Parfum this Father’s Day and keep him smelling great all day. A masculine yet subtle scent is just what he needs in an everyday fragrance.  You could also top it up with the limited edition Mr. Burberry grooming line which features aftershave balm, hair and beard clay—perfect to make him feel fresh even when he has late nights.

Get Dad to stay youthful—starting with skincare

It’s not only Mums that are afraid of aging. This Father’s Day, why not fill your basket with skincare products to help Dad maintain his youthful self? The Sisley Super Soin Solaire SPF 50 ($210) is easy to wear but yet offers high coverage. Chock full of anti-aging properties, this product rejuvenates and moisturises the skin, keeping it as radiant as the sun.

Dads often stay long hours at work, so we recommend picking up one of Murad’s multiple products to give him an extra boost. The Murad Eye Lift Firming Treatment (S$138) injects moisture into the delicate eye area and instantly fills and smoothens lines, perfect for Dads that toil late into the night. In addition, the Murad Retinol Youth Renewal Serum (S$190) is a fuss-free product that gently minimises deep wrinkles and lines with no added side effects.

For the fathers crazy about technology

Most Dads have an obsession with tech, so why not get them one of the hottest products on the market! Word on the street is that the Amazon Echo is the tech must-have of the season. A voice activated system, the Echo connects to the Alexa voice service and is able to make calls, control household appliances and play music. This smart assistant will ensure that you won’t ever have to grab the remote or turn on the radio for Dad ever again.

ATV maker, Daymak produces prototype of the world’s fastest 4-wheel vehicle

0

A Canadian electric bike, scooter and ATV company called Daymak could be on the verge of building the fastest four-wheel production vehicle on the planet.

The current Guinness Record for the world’s fastest accelerating go-kart is held by Hochschule Osnabrück Institut MuT, and stands at 2.635 seconds and while the battery-powered Daymak-C5-Blast is still technically speaking in its prototype stage, it’s already comfortably beating the benchmark.

Even though an electric motor can serve up 100% of its power instantaneously, the vehicle it’s propelling forward still has to be able to overcome the laws of physics if it wants to turn that power into a record-breaking 0-60 time.

And that’s what makes the Daymak-C5-Blast so innovative. It uses 12 electric motors that provide a combination of forward momentum and upward thrust which in turn cut the go-kart’s weight from 200kg to 100kg.

“We could actually make it lighter and faster and at some point, the Go Kart would start floating like the Star Wars land speeder or we could add wings and it would fly,” said company president, Aldo Baiocch. “Speed will not be an issue and we think we can even go eventually under 1 second 0 to 60 making it faster than any vehicle in existence.”

Of course, testing this claim could prove challenging. “We just have to find someone fearless enough to drive it!” said Akili Sylvester, Lead Project Manager on the Daymak-C5-Blast.

As well as potentially breaking records — the company plans to get its claims officially validated as quickly as possible — the technology that enables the go-kart to punch through the air so effectively could be very easily applied to a host of other vehicles.

“We have a working prototype and we are currently looking to apply this technology to a variety of projects,” said company VP, Jason Roy “The potential is limitless.”

However, for the moment at least, the aim is to distill this technology into two production go-karts, the insane aforementioned C5-Blast complete with motors powering all four wheels, and a more affordable $10,000 version that uses just rear-wheel drive but the same upward thrust technology.

Luxury sportscar maker celebrates millionth Porsche 911 production

0

After 54 years of continued production, the vehicle that redefined what a sportscar should be is marking yet another milestone on its iconic journey. Even in the world of the automobile, terms like legend and icon may be used far too frequently, but in the case of the Porsche 911, all superlatives are completely justified. Just recently, Porsche unveiled its millionth 911, commemorating the brand’s legacy and dedication to its work.

For over a half-century the 911 has constantly pushed the envelope in terms of performance, handling and reliability. It is the most successful car in autosport history, having won more races in more events than any other model (the 911 accounts for over half of Porsche’s entire 30,000 race wins to date) and, thanks to choosing a path of evolution over revolution in terms of outward appearance at least, despite its comparative rarity on the road, it is one of the world’s few universally recognizable cars.

“We have continued to enhance the technology of the 911, refining and perfecting the sports car,” said Oliver Blume, Chairman of the Executive Board of Porsche AG, “that’s why it remains a state-of-the-art and technically innovative vehicle.”

However, it offers that technology in a way that the brand’s dedicated legion of fans will accept and that, more than any other reason, is why it has managed to stay relevant even as competition increases from the likes of Mercedes and McLaren. “54 years ago, I was able to take my first trips [in a 911] over the Grossglockner High Alpine Road with my father,” said Dr Wolfgang Porsche, Chairman of the Supervisory Board. “The feeling of being in a 911 is just as enjoyable now as it was then. That’s because the 911 has ensured that the core values of our brand are as visionary today as they were in the first Porsche 356/1 from 1948.”

The loyalty that the 911 stirs up in owners, along with the fact that unlike Italian automotive exotica, Porsches are built to last, is also why over 70% of all 911s ever built are still on the road today. In other words, the number of 911s currently in use is equal to the total amount of cars ever built by Aston Martin in its 103-year history.

The millionth 911 will not be offered for sale. Instead it will be going to the company’s museum, but not before it is goes on a global road trip over the course of the year where it will hit the Scottish Highlands, lap the Nurburgring and take in the US and China.

Review: Nahm, one of the best Thai restaurants in Bangkok, Thailand

There’s amazing food to be found (and eaten) just about anywhere in Bangkok, but the best restaurants in the city – and, in fact, Asia – seems to be clustered around the Thai capital’s business district. Gaggan, recently named Asia’s best restaurant at the San Pellegrino Asia’s 50 Best Restaurants Awards, is on a quiet lane off Langsuan Road; Eat Me Restaurant off Convent Road is a 10-minute-drive away from Lumpini; The House on Sathorn is right next to W Bangkok; and then, there’s the ever-buzzing Nahm at COMO Metropolitan Bangkok.

Nahm is one of those restaurants where foodies go with a certain level of expectation. The original – or rather, the first – Nahm in London was the first Thai restaurant to win a Michelin star. The Bangkok outpost has consistently ranked in the top 10 restaurants in Asia and top 50 in the world, in the San Pellegrino and Acqua Panna list. In 2017, nahm took the fifth spot. Unsuprisingly, diners may have to book a month ahead for a table during peak times.

We popped into nahm at midday on a Friday afternoon, and was seated at the back of the busy main dining hall – which was quieter. Befitting of its acclaim, the interior classy without being too polished – the décor is clean Scandinavian with a touch of Thai antiquity coming from the rusty-red brick-stepped columns, which are inspired by Ayutthaya temples.

The lunch menu has some 20-odd dishes to choose from, but we weren’t capable of making intelligent choices after a mind-melting rub-down at COMO Shambhala Urban Escape upstairs. So we went for the curated set menu (1,600 THB per person), consisting of a handful of canapes, another handful of mains and two tasting portions of desserts.

Standout, downright enjoyable dishes includes the signature sweet-savoury ma hor (minced pork, chicken and prawns simmered with palm sugar, deep-fried shallots, garlic and peanuts served on a pineapple), egg nets with prawns, wild almonds and kaffir lime, pork and lobster with shredded ginger and Thai citron, the chicken curry, and stir-fried cured pork with tomato and fiddlehead ferns. We also like how the first dessert – a savoury-sweet and refreshing concoction of fruit in scented syrup – transitioned our palate from strong-spicy to a sweet ending with poached persimmon and golden duck egg noodles sandwiched in Thai wafers.

Nahm is all about traditional Thai cuisine here, but there’s no pad Thai or green curry on the menu. What you get are plates after plates of big, bold flavours, taken from the streets of Bangkok and centuries-old Thai cookbooks. David Thompson, we heard, has a collection of some 500 books of Thai recipes, so even locals may find it hard to pin down what they’ve just put in their mouths.

That’s the beauty of Nahm – I think – and why the restaurant manages to pack in crowds year after year – it presents tastes that familiar yet foreign. There are curries, tom yum and Thai-style salads, but they’re not quite the kind you’re used to. Some say the food isn’t authentic, as did some Thai food enthusiasts and critics, but, to my mind, Nahm is perfect for well-heeled diners who appreciates aesthetics and fancy, riotous Thai fare that fires up tastebuds.

TAG Heuer Connected watch joins British secret agents in “Kingsman: The Golden Circle”

0

There’s a fresh-faced secret agent man in town and he’s got a shiny new accoutrement, the TAG Heuer Connected watch. The first Kingsman movie was a surprise hit, spawning a sequel scheduled to hit screens in September and a new horological partnership between the Kingsman and Statesman agents and Swiss watchmaker TAG Heuer. While the Kingsman agents will be brandishing the smartwatch, their US Statesman counterparts will be wearing the automatic Monaco. According to TAG Heuer, the watches play supporting roles of their own in the film, being essential to the success of the intrepid agents’ various missions (and probably the overall plot). Interestingly, TAG Heuer also raises the real-life role the watches played in the film, having to survive the various stunts! Apparently, these tickers did not get or need stunt doubles.

Kingsman: The Golden Circle director Matthew Vaughn describes the partnership like this: “For Kingsman: The Golden Circle, we needed a smart watch for our agents. We looked at the different options available, but none of them were elegant enough for a Kingsman. Then I saw an interview on Bloomberg TV with Jean-Claude Biver about his connected watch, and it became immediately obvious; the Kingsman agents would wear the TAG Heuer Connected.”

Vaughn’s feelings about the TAG Heuer Connected made it the official watch of the Kingsman agents. For his part, TAG Heuer and living legend of watchmaking Jean-Claude Biver is thrilled with the association, describing it thusly: “Kingsman means explosions, action, laughter, and, of course, elegance. Its cast of young actors is the stuff of dreams — gentlemen who aren’t afraid of anything. This is a perfect fit with TAG Heuer’s target market. This partnership will help us to get even closer to the younger generation.”

World’s 50 Best Restaurants 2018 heads to Bilbao, Spain

Chef Elena Arzak

Having previously been held in the United Kingdom for 13 years, the 2018 list of the World’s 50 Best Restaurants is set to be unveiled in Bilbao, in the Basque region of Spain. The move is lauded to reflect the organisation’s global reach, coming after successful editions in both New York and Australia in recent years.

Never before have the organizers of the international restaurant ranking chosen Spain to announce the results of their prestigious list, which saw New York eatery Eleven Madison Park take the top spot back in April.

It is no doubt that Spain has always been one of the most gastronomically vibrant regions of the world, with the highest concentration of Michelin starred restaurants per capita. The northern Spanish city of Bilbao, situated in Spanish Basque Country, embodies the gastronomic prowess of the region, which is popular among foodies in the know.

As well as its standout local produce, the region is home to no fewer than four establishments in the top 50 list, with Asador Etxebarri in Axpe (6th place), Mugaritz near San Sebastian (9th place), Arzak in San Sebastian (30th place) and Azurmendi near Bilbao (38th place). Elena Arzak, named World’s Best Female Chef in 2012, currently works in the kitchen at the triple-Michelin-starred Arzak family restaurant, alongside her father Juan Mari.

For 13 consecutive years, the “World’s 50 Best Restaurants” were announced in London, before heading off on a global tour. The ceremony was held in New York in 2016 and Melbourne, April 5, 2017.
