Louis Vuitton is striking for Men’s Pre-fall Collection 2018

Get ready for Louis Vuitton’s upcoming pre-fall collection, geared up with a social media campaign #FindVivienne. Merci. Have a Vuitton Day.

Inspired by travel, Louis Vuitton’s Fall/Winter 18 pre-collection is the answer to the versatility demanded on both urban and outdoor grounds.

Louis Vuitton Men’s Pre-fall Collection 2018: Visually striking

A Monogram palette runs throughout collection is reconsidered in various new images and conventions – from a more subtle form on Japanese seersucker silk shirts to more playful discharge print denim. The season also introduces a new Louis Vuitton Upside-Down, featuring an inverted monogram.

Introducing the new Louis Vuitton Upside-Down, where the iconic Monogram is inverted with a pop of colour amidst the general monochrome tone.

The Icônescollection recieves an update, as its new collection with a Monogram makeover, furnished with Monogram Eclipse. The recurrent playing card motif and dice print on the shirts and accessories preserves the ethos of the gifts and gaming collection.

Everyday wear echoing an ode to the routine life.

One of the highlights in the collection is a zip-through waterproof hoodie and everyday wear t-shirt that reads ‘Merci. Have A Vuitton Day’ – ephemeral signage to ode the routine life.

Light-hearted tones are interwoven in the classic, as the navy palette is animated with neon and autumnal hues. Outerwear featuring removable Monogram blanket linings caters to the layering demanded by cold and outdoor travels. Patch-worked pieces showcase diverse textures and skins while knitwears feature the signature seam taping –rounding up the theme of eclecticism with a clean finish.

Travel-friendly functional bagpacks and studded ankle boots are the new in for this collection

The Monogram Shadow is a new line marked by the use of embossed, soft, matte Monogram leather. The Louis Vuitton Upside-Down appears on Monogram Ink, with flashes of neon. Designed for the modern traveller, the new backpack was designed for athletic activities, with a drawstring opening and multiple internal and external pockets.

Shoes are dressed up most notably by a new ankle boot, with piping tracing the soles and derbies, complimented by namesake studs. Informal styles include a Monogram desert boot and a hiking sneaker for a wider mood of adventure.

On this upcoming pre-fall collection, Kim Jones, the previous Men’s Artistic Director before Virgil Abloh commented that keeping in mind “a truly global traveller,” Louis Vuitton “looked to the city lights of Hong Kong and New York and the big skies of the Himalayas and the Wild West to consider the way men dress today.”

Anticipate the upcoming Pre-fall collection with the #FindVivienne campaign on social media with the iconic Louis Vuitton mascot.

Best way to travel, being ferried around in a bag

The 11th edition of ART|JOG will be held in Yogyakarta for a month from 4 May to 4 June 2018 at the Jogja National Museum. The fair, which began in 2008, puts artists front and centre, doing away with traditional booths put up by art galleries and presenting works of artists in conversation with each other according to a theme. This year, it is ‘Enlightenment: Towards Various Futures’.

In all, there will be 40 participating artists from Indonesia and abroad, including the Philippines, Singapore and China. Visitors can look forward to another iconic ART|JOG facade from Indonesian contemporary artist Mulyana, who has been selected for this year’s commission. Aside from the popular ‘Merchandise Project’, which allows fairgoers to purchase creations by artists, there will also be a new ‘Daily Performances’ programme that promises to inject new life into the decade-long fair.

ART|JOG 2017

Yogyakarta itself is known for being the capital city of art in Indonesia with its prominent art ecosystem that supports a network of artist communities, alongside art practitioners and stakeholders, with frequent art markets and events held for the public. ART|JOG stands out as an established and unique platform where both artists and the public are invited in an open call to submit their works. By expanding the eligibility of submissions beyond professional artists and institutionalised craft, ART|JOG responds to the ground-up development of art that will include fresh faces and talents being introduced to the art scene.

One other special feature of this year’s fair is its distinct attempt to engage children with art. A collaborative theatre performance by Papermoon Puppet Theatre from Indonesia and the Polyglot Theatre from Australia will be presented during the fair. Titled ‘Cerita Anak (Child’s Story)’, the play is a theatre without words that places its audience at centre stage, before transporting them into a viscerally exciting world of art and drama.

Affordable High End Chronograph: Patek Philippe Aquanaut Chronograph 5968A

When it comes to high end luxury sports chronographs, many count the Omega Speedmaster, Rolex Daytona and the Patek Philippe 5980 Nautilus Chronograph among the many grail watches to own. For 2018, watch lovers can add the Patek Philippe Aquanaut Chronograph 5968A to the list, likely to be one of the more affordable high end sports-luxury chronographs (in relative terms of brand positioning) on the market to date.

Affordable High End Chronograph: Patek Philippe Aquanaut Chronograph 5968A

The Patek Philippe 5980 Nautilus Chronograph debuted in 2006, the same year the Nautilus celebrated its 30th anniversary. If you wanted one today, it costs SG$82,200. Enter the new Baselworld 2018 Aquanaut Chronograph or Patek 5968A. Costing SG$57,700, it’s one of Patek Philippe’s most affordable high end luxury sports chronographs with a fashionable if youthful new colour-way, orange!

After surprising watch connoisseurs with the first perpetual calendar in the Patek Philippe Nautilus collection, the new Aquanaut Chronograph is also a first for the Patek Philippe Aquanaut collection since 1997. Where the Nautilus was considered a bridge between dressy and sportive luxury timekeeping, the Patek Philippe Aquanaut was the brand’s first truly purpose-built sports watch and as its namesake would imply, aquatic sports in particular. Thus, for 21 years, the maison never really saw a need for a chronograph model in the collection.

That said, the Aquanaut was notable for one distinction – it was a five digit luxury sports model with a rubber strap, a first for the industry and a first for the brand; especially when you consider that its peers, even the behemoth Audemars Piguet Royal Oak Offshore were launched with steel bracelets. Launched at Baselworld 2018, the new Aquanaut Chronograph joins two other models – a time-and-date and travel time editions.

Impressively, the new Patek Philippe Aquanaut Chronograph 5968A earns its second distinction as likely one of the more playful or colourful models thanks to its orange accents and accompanying orange rubber strap. Naturally, one of watchmaking’s most detail oriented brands has also seen fit to include a secondary strap in black, which makes things a little more serious. While the colour scheme is a little out of character for Patek Philippe, the overall style of the new Aquanaut has not changed one bit – the octagonal shape of the case remains immediately recognisable even with two chronograph pushers.

The slate grey dial with square aka “Checker-board” pattern and “smoked” or fume effect radiating outwards, punctuated by orange accents and the single subdial makes for very attractive if completely symmetrical appearance. Unlike the Nautilus Chronograph, the new Aquanaut chronograph features no running seconds or 12-hour subdial integrated into one, instead, the Baselworld 2018 Aquanaut Chronograph displays only a 60 minute counter which one supposes, even with the complexity of its flyback mechanism, makes things relatively more affordable hence the price tag.

The new 2018 Aquanaut Chronograph is driven by the in-house Calibre CH 28-520, a self-winding flyback chronograph with column wheel and modern vertical disk clutch which prevents rebound of the hand when the chronograph is actuated. Ingenious Patek Philippe architecture also means that the clutch is virtually friction free which allows the new Aquanaut Chronograph  to have a chronograph hand which also serves as a running seconds hand.

Another Patek innovation also appears on the Baselworld 2018 Aquanaut Chronograph, a foldover clasp equipped with four catches secure wearing (and also the product of two years R&D).

Movement Automatic Calibre CH 28-520 with 55 hours power reserve

New luxury watch: A. Lange & Sohne Saxonia Annual Calendar

0

Some brands are defined by their icons – Speedmaster for Omega, Submariner for Rolex and Navitimer for Breitling. For A. Lange & Sohne, the Lange 1 stands a titan as a flagship for the Saxony watchmaker. While it is inevitable that some luxury watches become analogous symbols for the watchmaker as a result of popularity, others are diamonds in the rough, waiting for their moment to shine: Enter the A. Lange & Sohne Saxonia Annual Calendar.

New Luxury Watch: A. Lange & Sohne Saxonia Annual Calendar

Though the Saxonia collection debuted with brethren like the famed Lange 1, the collection lacked A. Lange & Sohne’s signature high complications like split-second chronographs, and tourbillons. These prestigious symbols of vaunted Saxony watchmaking prowess could be found in other collections and it was only in 2010 that Saxonia would find favour in the addition of a new Saxonia Annual Calendar, recognising differing lengths of the months (but not the leap year) unlike but similar to a perpetual calendar.

Available in white and rose gold since 2010, the A. Lange & Sohne Saxonia Annual Calendar was finally introduced in platinum at SIHH 2013. For 2018, the new Saxonia Annual Calendar is visually identical but not a re-issue of the original, especially with sublime slate grey dial standing in splendid contrast of its white gold case. Combined with black rhodium finished oscillating weight decorated with circular graining, the latest Saxonia Annual Calendar is a limited 25 piece edition that is bound to sell out.

Available exclusively through Lange’s U.S. New York City, Costa Mesa, California boutiques, the limited edition new Saxonia Annual Calendar is powered by an automatic Sax-O-Mat caliber, and Lange signature big date display. The latest Saxonia Annual Calendar returns with its iconic legible display of calendar functions, indicating the date, the month, the day of the week and the phases of the moon. While the elaborate annual calendar mechanism automatically recognises which months have 30 and 31 days, it does not recognise leap years like a perpetual calendar.

Measuring 38.5mm wide by 9.8mm thick, the new 25 piece US limited edition Saxonia Annual Calendar’s gorgeous brushed grey dial with the matching white-on-grey date discs distracts a little from the 476 component manufacture calibre. Returning on this latest Saxonia Annual Calendar limited edition is the brand’s patented zero reset mechanism where pulling crown out not only stops the movement but triggers a series of levers which automatically resets the second hand to zero, allowing for precise setting. It’s a joy to watch the ingenious zero reset mechanism in action when I had my hands on a production model A. Lange & Sohne Saxonia Annual Calendar.

The European Union Film Festival (EUFF), in its 28th edition, will run from 10 to 20 May at National Gallery Singapore, and present over 20 films from across Europe with Austria as the featured country.

The festival opens with Fly Away Home, a film set in 1945, Vienna where the powder keg of war and the Russian occupation is seen through the innocent eyes of nine-year old Christine.

The festival will continue the festival’s long tradition of collaborating with a Singapore film school. Partnering for the fourth time with Ngee Ann Polytechnic’s School of Film and Media Studies, it will present short films by students and alumni of the school alongside the official film selection, including ‘Fragment’, an omnibus film celebrating the strength and diversity of Southeast Asian independent cinema. Made up of a collage of ten stories, each one embraces the others’ subjectivities.
