Rolex เปิดตัว Oyster Perpetual Cosmograph Daytona เป็นครั้งแรกเมื่อปี 1963 เพื่อเป็นนาฬิกาโครโนกราฟแบบมีสเกลแทคคิมิเตอร์สำหรับการใช้งานโดยนักแข่งรถโดยเฉพาะ แต่ในภายหลังก็กลายเป็นที่นิยมอย่างแพร่หลายในหมู่คนรักนาฬิกาทั่วไป และทำให้หลายคนเฝ้าจับตามองว่าในวาระครบรอบ 60 ปีของนาฬิการุ่นนี้จะมีอะไรที่เป็นความพิเศษจาก Rolex บ้าง ซึ่งเราก็ได้เห็นผลงานสำคัญชิ้นแรกไปแล้วในงาน Watches and Wonders Geneva ช่วงปลายเดือนมีนาคมที่ผ่านมากับการเปิดตัว Cosmograph Daytona รุ่นวัสดุ 950 แพลทตินัมที่มีฝาหลังใสแบบที่ Rolex ไม่เคยผลิตมาก่อน
และเพียงสองเดือนให้หลัง Rolex ก็ปล่อยเซอร์ไพรส์กลางปีแบบที่ไม่มีใครคาดคิดมาก่อน นั่นก็คือ Cosmograph Daytona รุ่นใหม่เพื่อฉลองครบรอบ 100 ปีของ 24 Hours of Le Mans ซึ่ง Rolex เองเป็นนาฬิกาอย่างเป็นทางการมาตั้งแต่ปี 2001 การแข่งรถสไตล์เอนดูแรนซ์สุดทรหดที่ประเทศฝรั่งเศสนี้กำหนดให้ทั้งคนและรถจากทีมต่างๆ ต้องขับเคี่ยวกันยาวนานแบบไม่มีได้พักตลอดเวลาหนึ่งวันเต็ม ดังนั้น Rolex จึงเลือกพัฒนา Cosmograph Daytona รุ่นพิเศษในวัสดุไวท์โกลด์ 18 กะรัตใหม่นี้ให้จับเวลาได้นานถึง 24 ชั่วโมง แทนที่จะเป็น 12 ชั่วโมงเหมือนในทุกรุ่นที่ผ่านมา
ในการนี้ Rolex ต้องติดตั้งระบบชุดทดรอบซึ่งประกอบด้วยชิ้นส่วนจำนวน 7 ชิ้นเพื่อทำหน้าที่เป็นเหมือนดิฟเฟอเรนเชียลให้กับเครื่องรุ่นคาลิเบอร์ 4131 จนเกิดเป็นเครื่องรุ่นคาลิเบอร์ 4132 ใหม่โดยที่ไม่ส่งผลกระทบต่อสถาปัตยกรรมเดิมหรือประสิทธิภาพของตัวเครื่องแต่อย่างใด โรเตอร์ขึ้นลานผลิตจากเยลโลว์โกลด์ 18 กะรัต มองเห็นได้ผ่านทางฝาหลังแบบใสและทำหน้าที่ขึ้นลานให้ได้เต็ม 72 ชั่วโมง เมื่อสังเกตบริเวณเคาน์เตอร์ทั้งหมดบนหน้าปัดจะเห็นได้ว่าตัวเลขและสเกลบนวงหน้าปัดเล็กทั้งสามเป็นแบบวินเทจ ไม่เพียงเท่านั้น ตัวเลข 100 ของสเกลแทคคิมิเตอร์บนขอบหน้าปัดเซราโครมสีดำยังทำเป็นสีแดงอีกด้วยเพื่อสื่อถึงปีครบรอบสำคัญในครั้งนี้
Cosmograph Daytona เวอร์ชั่นใหม่นี้สวมใส่ด้วยสายแบบออยส์เตอร์ซึ่งมีชื่อเสียงในเรื่องของความทนทานมาตั้งแต่ยุคทศวรรษที่ 1930 บานพับนิรภัยเป็นแบบออยส์เตอร์ล็อคซึ่งมีข้ออีซี่ลิงค์อยู่ภายในช่วยให้ขยายความยาวสายได้อีกประมาณ 5 มม. ระหว่างวันเพื่อความสบายข้อมือ และเนื่องจากสายรุ่นนี้ผลิตจากวัสดุไวท์โกลด์ 18 กะรัต Rolex จึงเพิ่มอินเสิร์ทเซรามิกไว้ข้างในสายเพื่อช่วยให้เกิดความยืดหยุ่นสูงสุดขณะสวมใส่ และเพื่อช่วยยืดอายุการใช้งานของสายในอีกทางหนึ่งด้วย
นาฬิกา Cosmograph Daytona ทุกเรือนผ่านการรับรองมาตรฐานแห่งความเป็นเลิศ Superlative Chronometer ซึ่ง Rolex ก่อตั้งขึ้นเมื่อปี 2015 โดยก่อนที่จะมีการรับรองนั้นนาฬิกาที่ประกอบเสร็จแล้วแต่ละเรือนจะต้องถูกทดสอบเป็นการภายในที่ Rolex เพื่อให้มั่นใจได้ในเรื่องความเที่ยงตรง การกันน้ำ การเก็บกำลังลานสำรองและประสิทธิภาพในการขึ้นลาน นาฬิกาที่ผ่านมาตรฐาน Superlative Chronometer จะมีความเที่ยงตรงอยู่ในเกณฑ์ความคลาดเคลื่อน +2/-2 วินาทีต่อวันเท่านั้น และจะมาพร้อมกับสัญลักษณ์ตราประทับสีเขียวและการรับประกันในระดับนานาชาตินานถึง 5 ปีเต็ม

The Rolex Oyster Perpetual Cosmograph Daytona was first launched in 1963 as a chronograph with a tachymeter to suit the use of professional racing drivers. It has since arisen to the status of unparalleled fame within the watch industry, and many were looking forward to see how Rolex would mark its 60th anniversary this year. The first glimpse of such a celebration was the version of the Cosmograph Daytona in 950 platinum with a transparent case back, released at Watches and Wonders Geneva 2023 at the end of March.
Now, just two months after, Rolex delivers a mid-year surprise with yet another variant of the Cosmograph Daytona to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the 24 Hours of Le Mans. Rolex has been the Official Timepiece of this world-famous endurance race since 2001. Taking place annually in France, this is where both man and machine are put to test over the course of one full day, bringing out the participants’ ultimate performance in the process. Therefore, it is most befitting for the new Cosmograph Daytona in 18 ct white gold to differ from all previous versions in its ability to time an event lasting up to 24 hours instead of 12 hours.
To enable this functionality, Rolex has added a patented gear reduction system comprising seven components that acts like a differential into the existing Caliber 4131, turning the new movement into Caliber 4132, without affecting the movement’s original architecture or performance. A cut-out oscillating weight in 18 ct yellow gold, visible through the transparent case back, serves to replenish the movement’s 72-hour power reserve. Vintage Rolex lovers should appreciate the retro graphic design on the counters right away. Meanwhile, a nice touch is found in the red “100” tachymeter marking in red ceramic on the black Cerachrom bezel which alludes to the important anniversary of the race.
This new version of the Cosmograph Daytona is worn on an Oyster bracelet, famous since the 1930s for its legendary robustness. It is secured to the wrist by the Oysterlock folding safety clasp with Easylink comfort extension link which makes it possible for the watch owner to increase the bracelet’s length by approximately 5 mm during the day for comfort. And as this bracelet is made of 18 ct white gold, ceramic inserts are added inside the links in order to increase the flexibility while the watch is worn, as well as to increase its longevity.
All current models of the Cosmograph Daytona watches have received the Superlative Chronometer certification. This standard of excellence was established by Rolex in 2015. It involves a series of tests conducted internally at Rolex on fully assembled watches to verify their precision, waterproofness, power reserve and self-winding efficiency. This ensures that Superlative Chronometer timepieces perform within the deviation tolerance of +2/-2 seconds per day. As such, they are symbolized by the green seal and the confidence of an international 5-year guarantee.
