Luxury watches from SIHH 2017: Jaeger-LeCoultre introduces the Reverso Tribute Moon with silver and blue dials

0
By reducing the number of complications, the Jaeger-LeCoultre Reverso Tribute Moon has more breathing room on its silver dial
By reducing the number of complications, the Jaeger-LeCoultre Reverso Tribute Moon has more breathing room on its silver dial

Well-thought-out watches should be likened to well-balanced drinks with complementing and contrasting ingredients. The Jaeger-LeCoultre Reverso collection slips easily into this metaphor, as the rectangular watch with swivelling case has housed numerous complication combos over the decades. It has done so with aplomb and subtle elegance but sometimes also with gusto and heroic bombast.

The firm’s most recent creation is the Reverso Tribute Moon. It shares the same design codes as the Reverso Tribute Calendar from last year, but with the day of the week and the month stripped from the calendar function. The result is two-pronged. If you feel the need for complication, this would appear lesser than the Reverso Tribute Calendar. However, if you welcome this step towards minimalism, you get more breathing room on the grained silver dial and an elevated position for the logo now that the two windows are not there.

Besides, on typical Jaeger-LeCoultre full calendar watch models, there is no recess button for the quick setting of the day of the week in the first place. You need to advance the hour hand until you reach the correct day, and then use the quick-set pushers for the other indications. Such is no longer a chore here, as you only need to deal with the date and the exquisitely hammered moon.

Flip the case and the watch assumes a totally different personality. The dark blue dial features a Clous de Paris guilloché motif all around, leaving the central part with opaline finish clear for time indications. On this dial, it is possible to set the time to another zone, using a hidden sliding trigger at the top of the case. A graphical day/night indicator is provided for a quick and convenient reference, as well as for increased aesthetic appeal.

This watch is sufficiently different from last year’s Reverso Tribute Calendar so that it will not upset people who bought the earlier model. Its relative affordability does not necessarily mean it is any less valuable as a finely crafted watch either. Going back to the cocktail analogy, the versatile, manual-winding Reverso Tribute Moon is one long drink you can enjoy day and night, on workdays and otherwise. It is also great as your sole Reverso or as a member of an ever-expanding family of respected, Art Deco-inspired timepieces.

Conde Nast Traveler announces Best Hotel Openings 2017 from Hotel Saint-Marc, Paris to the Beekman Hotel, New York

0
Six Senses Seychelles

From Sri Lanka to Paris, and Mexico to the Maldives, Conde Nast Traveler has released the 2017 edition of their annual “Hot List,” singling out the best hotel openings of the past year. For the list, editors, reporters and photographers logged 529,500 miles (852,150 km), slept in 200 beds, and collected stamps from more than 50 countries this year. Out of the 675 contenders, editors whittled down the pool to just 75 properties.

“Our annual Hot List, a rigorous selection of our favorite new hotel openings of the past year, is a predictor of what properties will stand the test of time, make history, and let you reimagine how you want to live and travel,” said Pilar Guzmán in her editor’s letter. “Our goal is that these properties spark the heat of early romance in the beginning, and then eventually settle into enduring love.”

The Ritz Paris

Paris is particularly well represented on the list, with six new properties including the iconic Ritz Paris, along with smaller boutique hotels “placed in the middle of the Parisian neighborhoods that made us feel like we actually lived there.” For that, there’s Hotel Saint-Marc, for instance, located near the famous Palais Garnier opera house and within striking distance of the Galeries Lafayette department store.

Named the city’s newest hot spot by Vogue Paris when it opened last summer, the boutique hotel features 26 contemporary rooms and suites in six different design and color schemes, along with garden, swimming pool and spa.

Travelers looking for a remote escape with an invisible “do not disturb sign,” meanwhile, will want to know about Helena Bay Lodge on New Zealand‘s Poor Knights Island, which features the world’s largest sea cave. The sprawling estate is made up of villas and junior suites and includes an outdoor 25-meter heated swimming pool, library, gym, sauna, massage room, lounge and outdoor fire pit.

Other destinations that were well-represented on the list this year Sri Lanka and New York, each with four properties, and Japan with three. Not surprisingly, The Beekman Hotel in New York also received a nod, after opening to much fanfare late last summer.

Converted from a 19th century landmark—one of Manhattan’s first skyscrapers—the building was restored to its former glory and features a Tom Colicchio restaurant, Fowler & Wells. The Four Seasons brand also snagged four addresses.

World’s fastest production SUVs: Bentley Bentagaya, Porsche Cayenne Turbo S top the list for 2017

0

As Fast and Furious makes its way to the top of the box office, SUVs are doing the same in the motoring world. Car manufacturer Jeep races to the summit of the performance off-roader market with its new 707hp Grand Cherokee Trackhawk alongside strong contenders. Here’s a look at its stats and at the cars, it’s had to overtake to get to the top.

Jeep Grand Cherokee Trackhawk

2018 Jeep® Grand Cherokee Trackhawk

A full-sized SUV with a 6.2-liter, supercharged V8 good for 707hp and 645 lb ft. (875Nm) of torque. When that’s sent to all four wheels it results in a 0-60mph time of 3.5 seconds and a top speed of 180mph (though Jeep is quick to point out the speedometer actually goes up to 200mph).

Bentley Bentayga

It might be a high-sided limousine with wooden cabin trim that can only be sourced by artisans abseiling down a cliff face, but it also has a six-liter W12 twin-turbocharged engine under its immense hood. That outputs 608hp, 900Nm of torque and gives the 2440kg car a 0-100km/h time of four seconds. However, Bentley claims the Bentayga can hit 187mph.

Tesla Model X

Spec Tesla‘s first SUV with the 100kWh Dual Motor Performance D package and it will beat just about anything powered by fossil fuels off the line. Thanks to instantaneous electric motors running the show, this seven-seater has 967Nm of torque on tap and can go from 0-100km/h in 3.1 seconds. However, it only outputs 603hp and its top speed is just 150mph (250km/h).

Porsche Cayenne Turbo S

The only full-size SUV in this list to actually come from an out-and-out sportscar maker is also one of the slowest. Even with a 4.8-liter, 570hp turbocharged V8 under its hood, the Cayenne can only manage a 0-100km/h time of 4.1 seconds. However, thanks to 800Nm of torque, it can hit a very impressive 176mph (283km/h).

Range Rover SVAutobiography Dynamic

The fastest and most exclusive series production Range Rover in the company’s history. Just like the Bentley its cabin is a place of zen-like tranquillity and business-class luxury. However, it is one of the world’s most formidable genuine off-road vehicles and, thanks to a 550hp supercharged V8 is also the most powerful one Land Rover has ever built. It serves up 680Nm of torque and covers the 0-100km/h dash in 5.4 seconds; its top speed is capped at 155mph (250km/h).
