Azurmendi, Spain named best restaurant in the world by Elite Traveler

0

According to the wealthy readers of Elite Traveler, described as “ultra high net worth consumers,” the world’s best dining destination is found in Larrabetzu, Spain, where chef Eneko Atxa works his culinary sorcery to create inventive, modern Basque cuisine at Azurmendi.

The new title will add to the restaurant’s decorated garland of achievements, which also includes three Michelin stars.

Overall, the list of the top 100 restaurants is dominated by the US, which takes up a quarter of the ranking, including 10 for New York alone.

After the US, France boasts 18 restaurants in total, including eight Parisian addresses.

Rounding out the culinary capitals are San Francisco with five restaurants, and London, Hong Kong, Chicago and Tokyo, with three addresses each.

The sixth edition of the awards also bestowed a lifetime achievement award on chef Joel Robuchon and named Italy’s Massimo Bottura chef of the year.

San Francisco-based French chef Dominique Crenn was named rising star chef of the year.

Elite Traveler is the latest ranking aimed at classifying the best dining destinations around the world. Last month the World’s 50 Best Restaurants pronounced New York’s Eleven Madison Park the top of its kind, which placed third with readers of Elite Traveler.

Fondation Beyeler expansion in Basel, Switzerland offers gallery space

0

Located in Riehen, near Basel, Switzerland, the Fondation Beyeler is currently housed in a modern building designed by Renzo Piano that opened its doors in 1997 and is renowned for its idyllic site in Berower Park. Since the museum was founded, its modern and contemporary art collection has doubled in size.

With the expansion, the foundation aims to create a visitor-friendly museum for the 21st century — which, for the team, means creating space for cultural events and art education. Additional gallery space is also a major objective, and the extension will offer new areas to display donations and works on permanent loan.

As part of the expansion, a new public park has been created in the heart of Riehen, made possible by the museum’s acquisition of the neighbouring and previously off-limits Iselin-Weber Park, whose mature trees and waterlily pond will now be accessible to the public.

The extension doubles the Fondation’s park area, a defining and beloved feature of the current site.

The design by Peter Zumthor aims to adapt to the village-like character of Riehen by creating three relatively small buildings, including a service building, a transparent events pavilion and a House for Art. Together, they will serve to link the new and old parks integrated into the Fondation’s design.

Plans and models will be on display in Riehen May 10 to 23; a timetable for the extension has not been revealed.

Chloé to open exhibition space “Maison Chloé” in Paris

According to Vogue France, the building will be located in the upscale 8th arrondissement of Paris, not far from Chloé headquarters. It will function as an exhibition space in which to display the works of artists who have collaborated with the brand, as well as a showroom and photo studio. The fifth floor will be home to the brand’s archives, which stretch back to its founding in 1952 by Gaby Aghion.

For its first major event, Maison Chloé will pay homage to the legendary fashion photographer Guy Bourdin with an exhibition entitled “Femininities.” The show will trace Bourdin’s photographs of models wearing Chloé that appeared on the pages of Vogue from the 1950s onwards.

Chloé called on curator Judith Clark to work on the exhibition, who explained to Vogue that she saw Maison Chloé as a museum: “I love the fact that in one room you will be able to explore the archival pieces, then those objects are re-imagined in the exhibition next door, leading to a gallery of extraordinary prints upstairs,” she said. “The Chloé dress comes in and out of the story and the building itself begins to feel as though it’s experienced via Guy Bourdin’s distorting eye.”

Maison Chloé will open on July 2, to coincide with the beginning of haute couture fashion week in Paris.

The largest ever “flawless” heart-shaped diamond to appear at auction will go under the hammer at Christie’s sale of precious jewels in Geneva this month and is expected to fetch up to $20 million. The 92-carat pendant suspended from a pearl sautoir is the showcase piece at Christie’s spring sale, set for May 17 at the ultra-luxe Four Seasons des Bergues hotel on the shores of Lake Geneva.

Hotel de Crillon at Place de la Concorde in Paris, France reopens with new restaurant

0

Located at Place de la Concorde at the foot of the Champs-Elysees, the luxury hotel is a city landmark whose legacy stretches back to 1758. After a four-year overhaul, the hotel is set to welcome back its typically rich and famous clientele in time for the summer peak season, when the city hopes to lure back the tourists it lost following a spate of terror attacks.

Originally meant to last just two years, the re-opening was delayed by another two years for the installation of a new spa, an illuminated pool in the hotel basement, and detailed restoration efforts. Other new additions will include a space specially designated for the hotel’s male clientele and a hair salon.

The old restaurant Les Ambassadeurs will become a champagne bar, and the hotel will feature live music every night, be it classic or contemporary. The new restaurant will also have a separate entrance so that guests don’t have to go through the hotel.

Another storied Parisian hotel, the Ritz Paris, also took four years to complete its transformation and opened its doors to the public last year.

Gordon Ramsay opening Hell’s Kitchen inspired restaurant at Caesar’s Palace, Las Vegas

Celebrity Chef Gordon Ramsay will be bringing his TV series “Hell’s Kitchen” to life in a sprawling new restaurant set to open at Caesars Palace Las Vegas this winter. The opening will mark a first for the long-running TV series, which airs in 41 countries around the world and is entering its 17th season.

When it opens later this year, Hell’s Kitchen restaurant will seat up to 300 guests both in indoor and outdoor patio spaces and feature a daily brunch, dinner and bar menu. To replicate the TV series, the menu will feature recipes from former cast members and Ramsay himself.

Fans of the show will recognize design elements based on the competitive cooking show that pits a blue team against a red team, and the open kitchen concept where all the action takes place. Hell’s Kitchen restaurant will mark Ramsay’s fifth Las Vegas eatery.

“Fans of the show have been asking us to bring a Hell’s Kitchen restaurant to life since day one, so I’m thrilled to finally be doing it here at Caesars Palace,” said Ramsay in a statement. “A key element of the show’s success has always been the diners’ experience, so we are excited for guests in Las Vegas to feel like they too are part of the show — flames and all.”

To commemorate the announcement, Ramsay ignited the 17-foot pitchfork which had been transported from the studio set, and placed in the center of Caesars’ iconic fountains.
