Republic of Fritz Hansen from Denmark, relaunches iconic ‘Oksen’ Chair

0

Danish design brand Republic of Fritz Hansen will relaunch the iconic “Oksen” lounge chair by celebrated designer Arne Jacobsen. As well as the “Ant” and the “Swan,” the Danish designer added another animal-themed seating solution to his range of designs in 1966 with the “Oksen,” which means “bull” in Danish. The design draws inspiration from the animal’s broad shoulders and powerful silhouette.

As well as its innovative outline, this particular chair is unusual in that it was not designed for an architecture project, unlike many of Arne Jacobsen’s creations.

The fruit of several years of experimentation, the chair is celebrated by design fans as a rare piece, due to its short original production period. It also has a squarer, more angular design than Jacobsen’s other seating, which borrowed rounder, more organic shapes from nature.

Head of design at Fritz Hansen, Christian Andersen, said: “To me, the ‘Oksen’ is one of the most distinctive Arne Jacobsen designs and shows the great range of his talent. The precise and almost geometric design of the chair is unique, demonstrating that Jacobsen dared more than others at the time.”

For the reissue, the 2017 “Oksen” sees the backrest lengthened by 5-7 centimeters and the armrests slimmed by 2-3 centimeters. Creating the new design proved a particular challenge for the Fritz Hansen team since no original drawings of the chair remain. As a result, the 2017 design was developed using an “Oksen” museum piece that could not be touched.

The 2017 “Oksen” chair is available in brown or black and has a matching footstool. It goes on sale from October in Fritz Hansen concept stores and selected dealers.

Stockholm Infinity Pool project boasts views of Södermalm and the Baltic Sea

Ulf Mejergren Architects (UMA) , founded in 2010, has conceived of an infinity pool for Stockholm. The project intends to supply a captivating new way to take in the city, while also seamlessly absorbing the view of the waterfront. The vantage point of Södermalm — the northern part of the hip Stockholm district — has some of Stockholm’s best views, with unobstructed vistas over the magnificent inlet where the archipelago becomes the Swedish capital. With the view bleeding into the Baltic Sea, it will make for a most picturesque vista while taking a morning swim.

This infinity pool would provide an attractive addition to the city for public use, stretching more than one kilometer from the central northern part of Södermalm (called Slussen) all the way to the eastern point of the island. Built just outside of the existing railing, it would fortuitously block out the view of the motorway below, which occupies most of the waterfront along with infrastructure for large cruise ships. “Södermalm is an island-neighborhood in central Stockholm, making it a heavily trafficked area for cars to zip through,” noted Architectural Digest of Route 222, which hugs the northeast coast and connects people to Stockholm’s Old Town. ” As such, the seven-lane motorway also looks out toward the Baltic Sea, as well as some of the most spectacular views of the city-sights that are currently being underutilized because of the highway itself.”

The load-bearing structure would be made out of a repeating console structure of steel bolted to the bedrock behind. The pool module would be made out of concrete and lifted with a crane upon the steel console and then secured.

The Stockholm Infinity Pool (SIP) pool water would be pumped from the Baltic Sea by way of a small treatment plant beside one of the cruise terminals on the dock. Dressing rooms, showers and saunas would be located under the pool, so the view remains unobstructed from street level. During winter time, the water level would drop so it can be used for ice skating.

Neither the local government nor UMA have announced concretely when or if the project would be approved.

Bentley Bentayga Falconer by Mulliner released for falconry enthusiasts

0

There are lots of specialist activities vehicles designed to suit, and some people will immediately think of Nissan recently unveiling a prototype X-Trail especially designed for dog owners to accommodate their beloved pets. One thing vehicles like this do tell us is that motor manufacturers know their markets and their customers, and there can be no finer example than a new version of the Bentley Bentayga that’s been specially designed to cater for the needs of falconers.

Now, we’re not talking fans of a football team from Atlanta in the US or a rugby team from Newcastle in England. This is a Bentayga specially adapted by Mulliner, which is Bentley’s in-house coachbuilding division, to cater for the needs of those who participate in the ancient sport of flying falcons. Mulliner can also adapt your Bentley for more mundane pastimes like fly fishing of course, but as falconry is indisputably a sport of kings, it’s perhaps a wonder why the ultimate luxury auto brand hasn’t come up with it sooner.

Not only does this new Bentley Bentayga Falconry by Mulliner offer all the specifically tailored accessories and storage for well-heeled falconers, the dash features an exquisite 430-piece wood inlay of a saker falcon soaring high above the desert. The incredible inlay took a full nine days to create through cutting, sand shading, pressing, and double cutting. As you’d probably expect with such an exclusive Bentley, a wide range of common and exotic woods are used, including chestnut, eucalyptus pommele, holly, lacewood, maple, olive ash, and ripple sycamore.

More practical enhancements for the true falconry enthusiast include a cork perch on the center console that’s flanked by the two front seats. The hatch has been outfitted with a pair of cork chests, one a flight station and the other a refreshment case, both of which sit on a movable tray to allow for easier access. The flight station has a drawer with a piano black veneer for accessories such as a GPS bird-tracking unit, binoculars, and handcrafted leather bird hoods and gauntlets that can be ordered as additional options. A pair of perches are stored at the rear of the Bentley, and with the hatch open, the falcons can be readied for action in the shade.

No price has been quoted for the Bentley Bentayga Falconer Edition.

World’s most expensive luxury handbag: Christie’s auctions rare Hermès Birkin Bag for US$380,000

0

Hermes’ Birkin bags are one of the most highlight sought after luxury fashion items in the world. Hence, there’s no surprise that a diamond-encrusted crocodile-skin Hermes Birkin handbag with white gold details has broken the record for the world’s most expensive ever sold at auction, fetching nearly US$380,000 at a Hong Kong sale. The rare Himalaya Niloticus Crocodile Diamond Birkin 30 went to an unknown phone bidder Wednesday for HK$2.94 million after intense bidding, a spokeswoman for auction house Christie’s told AFP. The new record beat one set last year, also in Hong Kong, by an identical Hermes bag that sold for HK$2.32 million.

Only one or two Diamond Himalayas are created each year globally, making it one of the rarest production runs for handbags, according to Christie’s. “It actually has been rumoured that they will discontinue Himalayas altogether this year, which may be part of the reason that we’ve seen the increase in the value this season,” Matthew Rubinger, Christie’s international head of handbags and accessories division, told AFP.

Designer handbags are increasingly seen as investment opportunities and have become a craze for collectors, taking global auction houses by storm and scoring record prices.

The handmade bag—described by the London-based auctioneers as “the most desirable handbag in existence”—is encrusted with diamonds, while the buckle and trademark mini Hermes padlock are from 18 carat white gold.

The bag was made in 2014 and is from Hermes’ “Birkin” series named after actress and singer Jane Birkin, who was born in Britain and lives in France.

Top beauty looks at the Chanel Métiers d’Art 2017 show in Tokyo, Japan

Eye-popping eye shadow and bold hair accessories had pride of place at the Japanese leg of Chanel‘s widely followed Métiers d’Art Paris Cosmopolite 2016/17 show on Wednesday night. Lily Rose Depp, Vittoria Ceretti, Alisha Nesvat and Tokyo-born actress Nana Komatsu put their best faces forward with refreshed make up looks.

Eyes were the focal point of Chanel’s latest runway event. Models’ eyelids were accentuated with a bold sweep of highly pigmented white eye shadow for an ultra eye-opening effect. Chanel’s palette sourcils was applied to brushed-up brows for extra emphasis.

Recreate blinding lids with Chanel‘s Tissé Smoky n°246 eyeshadow quad and a touch of ombre premiere in sable n°28 and noir satin n°26.

Matte lips were de rigueur with nude shades as firm favorites thanks to a touch of Rouge Allure ink in ‘Amoureux’ and ‘Séduisant’ and Rouge Coco balm. New Chanel muse Nana Komatsu stole the show with a statement raspberry lip.

Chanel’s runway makeup staples included a host of must-haves from the ‘Les Beiges’ range such as the belle mine naturelle powder and perfection corrector. For the replica show in Japan, hair genius Sam McKnight kept the hair focus soft and romantic. The models’ decidedly ‘just-woke-up-like-this’ hairstyles were jazzed up with veils, large Chanel silk and tulle flowers, little crowns of roses in black, navy, white and coral.

Sistine Stallone wore delicate posy-like hair accessories in Chanel classic shades of black and white to match the monochrome tweed twill of her quilted knit jacket. In November of last year, Chanel and Fendi‘s in-house hair genius published his first book—”Hair by Sam McKnight.” An inspiring read for any hair enthusiast, the book provides a back catalogue of Karl Lagerfeld approved ponytails and extravagant hairstyles that McKnight has conjured up for Chanel’s major runway events.

Chanel ambassador Caroline de Maigret was also among the guests attending the replica Paris Cosmopolite show in Tokyo. Until June 15, visitors heading to Chanel’s Ginza boutique can get a sneak peak at the model, music producer and writer’s wardrobe essentials with a special in-store installation and photo booth animation.

Luxury yacht SX88 by Sanlorenzo and Interior designer Piero Lissoni to debut in Cannes

0

The new SX88 by Sanlorenzo is a 27metre motor yacht and the first model in this revolutionary range. It is unique in several ways, with its state of the art technology such as high powered lithium batteries to keep your yacht running in silence; a combined Grp hull and carbon fibre superstructure; as well as the latest in speed, performance and environment sustainability.

Very much designed for the individual that likes spending as much time outdoors as indoors, the large windows allow in a lot of natural light and there are vast open spaces throughout. In particular, the main deck has a unique setup that permits the space from the stern to the bow to be opened up to create one large space, a first for a 27-metre yacht. Furthermore, there’s also plenty of space for sunbathing, double L-shaped sofas and coffee tables.

At the stern, there is a large 30 square metre beach area that offers space for a 15’ tender, a jet ski and a number of other toys. The space is five steps below the main deck and watercrafts are easily transferred via an integrated and well-hidden crane.

Back inside and just a flight of stairs down, the lower deck offers four or five double cabins depending on layout. The Owner’s cabin would also be on the lower deck if the open space layout is chosen, along with the galley. If it isn’t, the Owner’s cabin can be located on the main deck.

Unique designs also transfer over to the environmental friendliness of the SX88. With highly efficient lithium batteries, special thermal insulation on the glass and low consumption systems, RINA awarded her with the Green Class. The yacht can run all services on board for four to eight hours, making her emission-free during that period.

In-house yacht designer, Luca Cantella conceived this yacht, adding to a successful career having previously developed the Bluegame range of motor yachts. The design team also includes Officina Italiana Design’s Mauro Micheli and Sergio Beretta, Lou Codega and Italian interior designer Piero Lissoni.

Piero Lissoni’s interpretation of space is this concept: “I keep picturing boats, even very large ones, as if they were lofts, that is very open, highly liveable spaces, which make it possible to be in contact with what’s around us.” Unique to his design expertise is that he didn’t want to adapt the furniture to the space, a process that is usually typical in interior yacht design. Instead, he has arranged the furniture freely, much like you would in a home. Purchasers will also be able to customise the colours and materials used in their SX88 as they see fit. This enables them to create each yacht to suit their own specific taste.

Built at La Spezia shipyard in Italy, the SX88 will make her official debut at Cannes next September. Deliveries will start from Spring 2018, with the first six already ordered.
