Art market in Vietnam: Painters Le Pho, Mai Trung Thu, and Vu Cao Dam’s works prove popular among buyers

A particular country market that has dished out more positives amidst the general pessimism of the 2016 global art market is Vietnam. 2016 saw the modern Vietnamese art market continue to ride strongly on an ascending trajectory that had begun as early as 2014. Admittedly, the Asian art market has historically borne high hopes for Vietnam, always considering it the next emerging market. All through the 1990s and 2000s, its big break didn’t come but the market has never looked rosier than in the past few years, particularly with the emergence of Chinese and Vietnamese buyers in the market.

2016 was a year of plentiful offerings in the secondary market for Vietnamese modern art. Auctions in France and the US increasingly accessible to buyers in Asia via online marketing and sales platforms turned up more Vietnamese artworks than previous years (with accompanying strong prices) against a backdrop of strong prices in the bellwether Hong Kong auction sales. Christie’s presented in its May 2016 Asian 20th Century Art sale a curated section titled ‘Se Souvenir des Belles Choses: A Curated Collection of Vietnamese Art’ that featured more than 70 Vietnamese lots in its 20th century Asian art sale. With a 90% sell-through rate, and a sale total of US$4 million, it was not only the most valuable single auction sale of Vietnamese art, but also notable for the overwhelming response of Vietnam-based buyers, who accounted for more than half of the sold value of the sale.

The geographical footprint of Vietnamese art has also expanded in this time of growth, with the first ever sale of works of Vietnamese art in a mainland China auction taking place at Christie’s Shanghai in October 2016. A pair of small but relatively earlier Mai Trung Thu ink and gouache on silk portraits sold for CNY 660,000 (USD 98,622), at least three times what a pair of such portraits would have fetched just a couple of years ago. Leading Vietnamese contemporary painter, Nguyen Trung’s ‘Repose in the Garden of Delight’ realised CNY 228,000 (USD 34,070), easily doubling its high estimate, and continuing a run of recent resurgent prices.

Mid-20th century ink paintings on silk and lacquer paintings form the cornerstone of the modern Vietnamese art market. The key artists in the market — Le Pho, Mai Trung Thu, Vu Cao Dam and Le Thi Luu — were some of the very first few graduates from the French-established art college in Vietnam’s capital, Hanoi, who went to Paris in the pre-World War II years and settled and worked there. Pioneer lacquer painter Nguyen Gia Tri and Nguyen Phan Chanh, who paints primarily on silk, are the other two artists who stayed in Vietnam, and whose works form the core of the modern Vietnamese market.

In the past three years, with the exception of Vu Cao Dam where no extremely significant work has come to market, the other five first-generation modern artists have had works surface at market that have elicited decisive action from bidders. All previous auction record prices have been broken, and in the case of Le Pho and Nguyen Phan Chanh, repeatedly so. The entire top end of the modern Vietnamese market has pulled away considerably, and continually, upward.

The participation of new buyers has been a key factor in the overall strong showing in the market. In particular, buyers in Hanoi and Saigon, the two largest Vietnamese cities, have emerged to participate in unprecedented numbers and strength in the auction market in Hong Kong. Their sense of cultural patrimony to buy and bring heritage home has boded well for prices.

At the same time, there begins to emerge a broader understanding of the place of the Vietnamese artists working around the middle of the 20th century. Against the Fauvists’ bold colour palette and the emphasis of Expressionism on the artist as creative genius, the France-based Vietnamese artists painted with a vivid sense of cultural identity which they were keen not just to express in their lives, but to rely through the subjects and styles they worked on. The dainty portraits of girls, children and idealised landscapes painted on silk with their muted monochromatic colour palette and soft evocative tones made overtures to an oriental aesthetics shared with individuals like Sanyu and Tsuguharu Foujita. At the same time, the surrealistic, dream-like qualities of Marc Chagall’s work had a profound influence on Vu Cao Dam. An enlarged story of the School of Paris would read in the works of foreign artists such as the Franco-Vietnamese quadruplet how far-reaching the creative osmosis of the Parisian milieu was.

As the market shifts into gear for the upcoming second quarter auction season in 2017, watch out for continued ascending of prices and broadening of buyer base in the modern Vietnamese market.

Shoe Surgeon: The Coolest Nike Jordan 1s You Can Own Are Bespoke

If you have never heard of the Shoe Surgeon, it’s time you did. Dominic Chambrone aka the Shoe Surgeon founded Surgeon Studios to overturn the status quo in luxury bespoke crafts; and just 2 days ago, he once again exemplified his motto to “never stop creating” when he dropped his latest bespoke sneaker creation by adding vintage Brown Nile Crocodile leather to Nike Air Jordan 1s.

Shoe Surgeon Dominic Chambrone not only makes the coolest, most luxurious bespoke sneakers but also holds workshops for others to learn. Image rights: www.instagram.com/theshoesurgeon/

Introducing Dominic Chambrone, self-proclaimed “Shoe Surgeon”

He might be self proclaimed but it is plain to see from the amount of shoe swag on his instagram that Chambrone has quite the talent and skill with a scalpel. The Shoe Surgeon carefully dissects his commissioned sneakers and then in a bout of inspiration, embarks on some crazy luxury bespoke make-over, turning a regular pair of sneakers into some of the coolest bespoke sneakers you could ever own.

His work as Shoe Surgeon is painstaking, deconstructing every element of the sneaker and then remaking them with the finest materials and details – the result? Super luxurious bespoke sneakers unlike anything youve ever seen.

Though each bespoke sneaker commission is individually priced, the minimum order begins at US$1600 for each bespoke sneaker – obviously each pair is unique to client specifications and prices can vary according to size, detail, style and obviously, material. Here, Shoe Surgeon Chambrone definitely doesn’t compromise – each bespoke sneaker is made to wear and built to last.

He even worked with fashion filmmaker/photographer Elliot Evan on a bespoke sneaker commission using IKEA materials, perhaps snarky commentary on the recent trend direction which Balenciaga appears to be heading with their “classic blanket bag” and large tote.

Is Shoe Surgeon Chambrone poking fun at Balenciaga with his IKEA pack bespoke Jordans?

The genesis of the Shoe Surgeon can be traced back to 1985 when he borrowed a cousin’s pair of Jordan 1s to wear. Though they were the coolest sneakers in the 80s, the ubiquity of Nike Jordan 1s meant that soon pretty much were wearing the same Jordans. Chambrone then picked up an airbrush and turn his own white Air Force mids into camo-treated bespoke sneakers. The rest, they say is history.

The Coolest Nike Jordan 1s You Can Own Are Bespoke with Vintage Brown Nile Crocodile leather

In addition to having an immediately distinctive hide, the nile crocodile is considered the second largest living crocodilian, reaching up to 20 feet (six meters) in length and having a voracious appetite for everything from hippos to humans. That they can be bred for their leather, takes nothing away from their reputation in its native Africa for being a man-eater (statistically proven).

Nile leather is not only recognisably luxurious but when distinctive material meets iconic sneaker like Nike Jordans, genius usually results. Effortless luxe appeal radiates from every ridge and texture of the vintage brown nile crocodile leather, right down to the black waxed canvas laces. High quality brown nile leather joins a crisp white midsole with versatile gum bottoms – you can expect this pair of bespoke basketball sneakers to patina like a fine pair of Berluti shoes over time. 90th Anniversary of Longines Lindbergh Hour Angle watch

0

In 1927, an unlikely timepiece was conceived by a daring aviator named Charles Lindbergh and his sketches would eventually be brought to life by one of the premier watchmaking brands of the era. 90 years on, the Longines Lindbergh Hour Angle watch which eventually took form in 1931, lives on in the brand’s archives as one of the most unusual timepieces which the company has ever conceived. Thus, it is fitting that on the 90th birthday, the re-issue of that icon finds itself lovingly re-created in the same form, aesthetics and spirits of that very watch which cemented Longines’ reputation for timing and precision.

Birth of the Longines Lindbergh Hour Angle watch

In weather conditions less than ideal, Charles Lindbergh boarded the aptly named Spirit of St. Louis and went through his pre-flight checklist, many of the conditions would likely not pass muster by modern aviation standards. Nevertheless, Lindbergh has dream and no amount of potential turbulence from stormy weather was about to dissuade the aviator from taking the Spirit of St. Louis across the immense waters known as the Atlantic.

Charles Lindbergh conceptualised the Lindbergh Hour Angle watch crucial to pioneering aviators of that century.
Charles Lindbergh conceptualised the Lindbergh Hour Angle watch crucial to pioneering aviators of that century.

Armed with the bare minimal essentials required for the flight of an aircraft, Lindbergh chose to forgo even his radio and parachute just so he could make his non-stop flight from Roosevelt airport states-side to Bourget airport, Paris. Indeed, the spectacle and macabre of such a daredevil attempt was a delight to 1900s audiences as it is to contemporary palettes. More importantly, his was a journey that would be timed by Longines, then, the official timekeeper for the Fédération Aéronautique Internationale (FAI) since 1919, it was this historical connection which would shape the brand eventually.

The sketch of the Lindbergh Hour Angle watch which would allow pioneering aviators to conquer the skies.

Forgoing almost two days sleep, Lindbergh almost succumbed to the drowsiness but having surmounted the wall of clouds over the Atlantic, the 25 year old American pilot was not about to let his 5,850 km 33.5 hour journey transatlantic journey end with the ignominy of sending his propeller plane into the dust. Like Doc Emmett Brown hitting his head and developing the Flux capacitor (the invention which makes time travel possible), Lindbergh’s subsequent exhaustion (and some say delirium) would inspire his inventiveness. It was during his recovery that he would create a true aerial navigation instrument and his sketches would take the shape of the Lindbergh Hour Angle watch and he had only trusted one company to make it. The brand which timed his historic flight with accuracy – Longines.

The First Aeronautic Tool watch: Lindbergh Hour Angle watch

As far as pioneering aviation watches go, the Longines Lindbergh Hour Angle watch is the only one which can claim to be a dependable pilot’s companion. It was designed by Charles Lindbergh to be able to precisely calculate longitude and thus determine an exact geographical position and it became an essential navigation tool for an entire generation of pilots and navigators to tame the new frontier; back in the day, the new frontier was “navigated” (a word used loosely) by a system know as “dead reckoning”, which to me is essentially an educated guess based on airpseed and compass direction and then periodically updating your charts and maps with those inputs – thus, if both airspeed indicator and clock is correct, you should be where you think you are but it didn’t account for other variables. As a stop gap, before the invention of the Lindbergh Hour Angle watch, pilots combined dead reckoning with another useful “navigation” technique – looking out the window.

If this doesn’t sound like an ideal way to fly, it’s because it isn’t. The Lindbergh Hour Angle Watch provided computations for determining celestial lines of position. Its bezel and dial allowed navigators to read off the hour angle of a celestial object at Greenwich, eliminating a simple but troublesome calculation. Today, it rests as an object of legendary importance at the Smithsonian.

Equipped with a rotating internal dial and longitude indication (degrees and minutes of arc), the Lindbergh Hour Angle watch is lovingly re-issued, faithful to the original to the nth degree save for the modern automatic winding L699.2 calibre with 46-hour power reserve. The modern reference L2.678.4.11.0 Lindbergh Hour Angle watch retails SGD 7,190.

Waldorf Astoria Beverly Hills welcomes back glitzy glitterati in Los Angeles

0

Los Angeles has a new destination for the rich and the famous, with the newly opened Waldorf Astoria Beverly Hills hotel located strategically at the corner of Wilshire and Santa Monica boulevards — the gateway to the city of the stars. It’s one of the most hotly anticipated openings on the US West Coast, thanks to the iconic Waldorf Astoria brand and the suite of features and luxury amenities.

True to its local heritage, the hotel is designed to evoke the old Hollywood glamour of the 1930s and 40s, with a contemporary Art Deco motif, hand-painted murals, cascading crystal chandeliers and Lalique installations.

The rooftop pool deck is poised to become one of the most exclusive addresses in the city, as the largest rooftop destination in Beverly Hills accessible only to hotel guests. The area features cabanas, a lounge area and swimming pool, with panoramic views of the city.

All 170 rooms feature floor-to-ceiling windows that open onto private balconies overlooking the Hollywood Hills, and each guest is assigned a personal concierge.

The hotel also marks chef Jean-Georges Vongerichten’s grand debut in California, with not one, but three venues that will bear the chef’s signature cuisine: The Jean-Georges Beverly Hills (signature restaurant); The Rooftop by JG; and Jean-Georges Beverly Hills Bar, where the menu will feature locally sourced ingredients.

In keeping with its standard of luxe, the hotel is also home to LA’s only La Prairie Spa, one of the most expensive and high-end brands in the beauty industry.

National Gallery Singapore presents ‘YAYOI KUSAMA: Life is the Heart of a Rainbow’ exhibition

One of the biggest names in contemporary art, Yayoi Kusama, returns to Singapore in her highly anticipated solo exhibition, ’YAYOI KUSAMA: Life is the Heart of a Rainbow’. This is Kusama’s first major survey in Southeast Asia and will open to the public on 9 June 2017 at the National Gallery Singapore.

In ‘YAYOI KUSAMA: Life is the Heart of a Rainbow’, viewers will be able to explore 70 years of Kusama’s iconic art career in over 120 works. Including signature pieces such as her infinity mirror rooms, ‘Gleaming Lights of the Soul’ and ‘The Spirits of the Pumpkins Descended into the Heavens’, as well as other never-before-seen works, this exhibition offers an unprecedented glimpse into Kusama’s extraordinary, complex mind.

Exhibited works range from colourful mixed-media works to captivating installations, and often make use of Kusama’s signature motifs — dots, nets, and pumpkins — to create a sense of illusion and sensory manipulation.

Yayoi Kusama, The Spirits of the Pumpkins Descended into the Heavens, 2017.

“There’s a real sense of infinite space in her works,” says co-curator Russel Storer. This is particularly resonant in one of her installations, a mirrored peep room titled ‘I Want to Love on the Festival Night’. Created especially for the gallery, this spectacular exposition of light and space is striking and dramatic, yet strangely intimate.

Other works include soft sculptures as well as several paintings from her ‘My Eternal Soul’ series, including the titular piece for the exhibition, ‘Life is the Heart of a Rainbow’, which will be on display for the very first time. The exhibition culminates in the installation ‘Narcissus Garden’, first exhibited at the 33rd Venice Biennale in 1966. It features an arrangement of 1,500 reflective, stainless steel balls, and will be displayed at the Gallery’s historical City Hall Chamber, which will be used as an exhibition site for the first time.

Amidst the larger, flashier installations that Kusama is renowned for, however, one piece stands out as especially poignant: a video installation, ‘Song of a Manhattan Suicide Addict’. In this piece, Kusama sings an original song about her experience dealing with depression while a moving sequence of artworks forms the backdrop. “I swallow antidepressants and it will be gone,” she sings in her native Japanese. “Tear down the gates of hallucinations. The agony of flowers, the present never ends.”

In traversing seven decades’ worth of work, ‘YAYOI KUSAMA: Life is the Heart of a Rainbow’ not only presents viewers with a unique perspective of the subtle changes in Kusama’s distinctive style over the duration of her career thus far, but also two elements that remain constant throughout all her works: they are visually interesting, and they make you feel.

‘YAYOI KUSAMA: Life is the Heart of a Rainbow’ will run till 3 September 2017 at the Singtel Special Exhibition Gallery and City Hall Chamber, Level 3, City Hall Wing at the National Gallery Singapore.

For more details about the exhibition, visit the National Gallery Singapore.
