Adam West, A Celebrity Owner of Rolex Day Date, has Passed

0

Adam West, a rakishly handsome and talented actor who was eventually constrained by his role as the Caped Crusader, passed last friday night, age 88, after a short battle with leukemia. He famously played Batman in a popular (if campy) 1960s Batman TV series and due to the strength of his portrayal, never managed to shrug the association with the campy series after its cancellation.

He eventually rebounded with voiceover work as a fictionalised corrupt and vain version of himself as major of Quahog on “Family Guy” from 2000 to its recent season. Famously, he brought not just his unique vocal cadence and diction to Bruce Wayne but also his taste for watches – Adam West is recognised for his yellow gold Rolex Day-Date as much as his character, Bruce Wayne is due to his love for the watch on-screen and off.

In addition to his yellow gold Rolex Oyster Perpetual Day-Date, Adam West was dressed predominantly in Ralph Lauren when he played Bruce Wayne.

Before he became the Dark Knight, or as his family referred to him – “The Bright Knight” due to the stark contrast between his portrayal and the recent gothic turn of modern portrayals, West was a rising star from the late 50s where he too brought his vocabulary, gold Rolex Day-Date and almost aristocratic diction to roles on “Lawman,” “The FBI Story,” “Colt .45,” “Maverick,” “Hawaiian Eye,” “Bonanza,” “The Rifleman,” “Perry Mason,” “Gunsmoke,” “The Real McCoys,”, and “The Detectives”. Airing from 1959-62, his role in “The Detectives” playing a police sergeant was his longest running body of work before Batman which only ran for 3 seasons.

History of the Rolex Oyster Perpetual Day-Date

Other notable owners of the gold Rolex Day-Date includes Dr. Martin Luther King. The Rolex Oyster Perpetual Day-Date, famously nicknamed the Presidents’ watch, earned its reputation by being a favourite of American presidents. As a result, it bestowed an aura of prestige beyond it already luxurious countenance and regal Day and Date functions. Worn by heads of states, royalty and men like West and King, the Oyster Perpetual Day-Date became the ultimate status watch It is the ultimate status watch of the 70s and 80s embodying the accomplishments and prestige of the brand and of those who wear it.

Launched in 1956, the Rolex Day-Date soon symbolised the apex of watchmaking for a brand which already obtained chronometer certification in 1914, produced the world’s first water resistant watch which also protected the movement from particulates and humidity with its “oyster case” in 1926; it also adopted an automatic winding system in 1931 which they would dub ‘perpetual’ and thus by the time Rolex unveiled the Oyster Perpetual Day-Date, it was the sum of watchmaking artistry which represented the brand – especially with its instantaneous jump calendar system as opposed to what most other watches did which was complete various date indicators closer to 2am – the novelty of instant calendar switching at midnight, earned it the nickname “miracle of midnight”. The near universal appeal of the Rolex Day-Date also meant that the day of the week arc-shaped window display at 12 o’clock was available in a choice of 26 different languages.

A millimeter smaller than 2008’s 41mm Day-Date II, the modern Day-Date 40 returns to sophisticated, less conspicuous elements, eschewing the large Roman numerals for baton indexes on this Everose gold model.

At Baselworld 2015, Rolex launched the ever popular Rolex Oyster Perpetual Day-Date in a new size and a refined aesthetic – paying special attention to the bracelet and the movement. A millimeter smaller than 2008’s 41mm Day-Date II, the Day-Date 40 returned to sophisticated, less conspicuous elements, eschewing the large Roman numerals for baton indexes for platinum and Everose gold models and new minimalist Roman markers for yellow and white gold editions.

Minimalist Roman numeral hour markers are a nice touch on the new yellow gold and white gold Rolex Day-Date models.

Goes without saying that the modern Rolex Day-Date is fitted with the new generation manufacture Calibre 3255 featuring 14 patents including new bidirectional Perpetual rotor, twice the precision of a standard certified chronometer and 50% more power reserve (70 hours). The new Rolex Day-Date also features user friendly all-day/any-time calendar correction and hacking seconds for precise time setting.

Richard Mille RM 27-03 accompanies Nadal for historic 10th Win

0

Record setting tennis player Rafael Nadal has done it again, winning his historic 10th French Open title with another record setting watch – the Richard Mille RM 27-03. The historic 10th win was historic many because no other player has ever won 10 championships at the French Open nor have they been doing it with watches approaching the million dollar mark. The $750,000 watch accompanied Nadal, during his tourney with Audemars Piguet brand ambassador Stan Wawrinka to a resounding 6-2, 6-3, 6-1 victory.

The Richard Mille RM27-03 Rafael Nadal Tourbillon is a collection of 50 limited edition watches designed to be the most cutting edge timepieces on the planet by virtue of the brand’s insistence that their ambassadors wear their watches during those physically punishing events.

Watch of a Champion: Richard Mille RM 27-03 accompanies Nadal for historic 10th Win

It’s been an almost 10 year relationship beginning in 2008 when Mille and Nadal were both introduced by a mutual friend. On one hand, a technophile convinced that additional weight on his wrist might potentially impact his gameplay, on the other, a committed watch genius convinced that he could make an ultra-light watch with the most fragile of watch components and improve on their design with a robust endurance matching that of the tennis superstar.

The striking red and yellow hues of the Richard Mille RM27-03 Nadal Tourbillon's Quartz TPT® case pays homage to Nadal's native Spain. The intense burst of colour is achieved by impregnating fine layers of silica just 45 microns thick with tinted resin according to a proprietary process developed in Switzerland that stacks the filaments in layers before heating them to 120 °C. When it comes to releasing a new shade of Quartz TPT®, achieving colour stability compliant with REACH standards while resolving issues of biocompatibility and durability represents a tremendous display of prowess on the part of the engineers at Richard Mille and North Thin Ply Technology (NTPT®).

The limited edition Richard Mille RM27-03 Rafael Nadal Tourbillon is a the sum inventive horological genius of the other high performance Richard Mille watches that have come before it.

Anatomy of a Champion’s watch: How the Richard Mille RM 27-03 Nadal is the sum of all the brand’s innovations

It is conventional wisdom that wearing a tourbillon complication to a relatively leisurely sportive activity like golf is tantamount to signing yourself up for painful service in the event that a mis-timed or mis-aimed swing sends the result shockwaves up your club and into your timepiece – disrupting chronometry at best, totally knocking the tourbillon complication out of position at worst. Thus, the concept of “G-force” wasn’t one commonly associated with field of horology since it was general assumption that mechanical watches with high complications were treated with kid gloves. That was until 2001.

The 2001 Richard Mille in question and a visual guide to various realistic G-forces one might conceivably experience. Chart source: CBCnews Canada. Image rights: Richard Mille

Richard Mille innovation 1: G-force at the fore
“G-force” is a unit of measurement for describing force on the body when it is accelerated and notion of G-force entered watch collecting lexicon in 2001 when Mr. Richard Mille himself made hurled the first RM 001 in dramatic fashion onto the floor before an audience of journalists and future clients (and event which they repeat each watch fair I might add). The takeaway was undeniable – Richard Mille watches could withstand especially violent shocks unlike anything which previously existed.

Richard Mille innovation 2: 10.000-G’s Shock and Impact Resistance
As mentioned, it used to be that an errant golf-swing could really ruin your day and your tourbillon. The main innovation of extraordinary Richard Mille RM27-03 Rafael Nadal Tourbillon lies in the capacity of its tourbillon calibre to withstand shocks up to 10,000 g’s. It was borne of the requirement that even though Nadal didn’t wear the watch on his master arm, the return swing or back-hand stroke coupled with Nadal’s extraordinary power output when it comes to his swing – Nadal tops 5,000 rpm, averaging 3,200 rpm compared with other tennis champions Andre Agassi’s 1,800 rpm and Roger Federer’s 2,500 rpm, meant that any watch worn by Nadal had to put up with punishment unlike anything ever experienced by a watch. ‘Pendulum impact testing’ which simulates the linear acceleration that occurs due to sudden movements or shock to the wearer.

This virtual indestructability is vouchsafed by assembly of the ultralight tourbillon calibre on the skeletonised unibody baseplate of Carbon TPT® with a precision to the nearest micron, while the reduced number of components in this configuration permits additional weight savings, lightening the whole watch.

Richard Mille innovation 3: Outstanding construction
Heretofore unseen unibody baseplate in Carbon TPT®, grade 5 titanium bridges and strategic reinforcements at the heart (the mesmerising tourbillon complication) of the calibre all contribute to the rigidity of the timepiece.

For the first time at Richard Mille, the case middle has been removed. The bezel and caseback are assembled directly on the baseplate, which is described as ‘unibody’—a type of racing-car construction that ensures maximum rigidity and greater resistance to impacts.

Unibody Baseplate in Carbon TPT®

The Unibody Baseplate Caseband construction of the RM 27-02 is machined from Carbon TPT®.

Carbon TPT® consists of multiple layers of parallel filaments obtained by separating carbon threads. With a maximum thickness of 30 microns, the Carbon TPT® layers are saturated with resin then piled onto a special machine that modifies the orientation of the fibre between each layer by 45°.

Once it has been heated to 120°C and subjected to a pressure of 6 bars, the Carbon TPT® is machined at Richard Mille’s parts factory. Carbon TPT® is renowned for its excellent resistance to micro-cracks and splits.

The skeletonised Carbon TPT® baseplate is a feat of machining. A master component of the RM 27-03, it has been subjected to a full battery of extreme approval tests in order to optimise its mechanical properties.

Nadal’s historic 10th French Open win also marks the 15th Grand Slam title, edging out his tie with tennis legend Pete Sampras, it remains to be seen if Nadal can now equal or beat Roger Federer who won 18 Grand Slam titles. If Nadal’s relationship with Richard Mille continues, it could also set a new milestone for the brand and enhance the provenance of Richard Mille RM27 Nadal tourbillon series in terms of future auction values.

Paris-based A2Z Art Gallery will be opening their first gallery in Asia on 8 June 2017. Located in Hong Kong, the new A2Z Art Gallery HK will be presenting a solo exhibition by local artist Vivian Ho, titled ‘And then We are Strangers Again’.

‘And then We are Strangers Again’ features Ho’s depiction of the post-90s generation’s perspective of life in the city. Using a combination of pastels and watercolours, Ho’s dreamy style evokes a sense of nostalgia and sentimentality for her homeland.

The exhibition derives its name from the lyrics of a song by Hong Kong singer Eason Chan, ‘葡萄成熟时’ (When the Grapes are Mature). Growing up in the 90s, Ho spent her childhood surrounded by elements of Hong Kong popular culture such as Cantonese music. Her nostalgia for the past is clear in the fairytalesque way in which she depicts of the city, with a sense of wistfulness and lingering in the flickering, fading details of her works.

However, Ho’s art is more than just a self-indulgent exercise in nostalgia — beneath the surreal, romantic quality of her art lies something very tangible. Amidst strong feelings of political dissatisfaction and a seemingly unending struggle to discover their identity, the sentiment and national pride that shines through Ho’s work serves as a meaningful and timely reminder to the public.

Powerful and poignant, ‘And then We are Strangers Again’ is an introspective and thought-provoking narrative that promises to enthrall. It will run at A2Z Art Gallery HK until 22 July 2017.

Bespoke luxury car: Porsche 911 Turbo S Exclusive Series

0

Unlike a host of Porsche’s Platinum-badged cars, this new limited edition promises much more than simply comparative rarity and a greater list of optional extras fitted as standard equipment. If you’re lucky enough to get hold of one of the 500 911 Turbo S Exclusive Series models destined for production, you’ll be able to claim ownership of the most powerful production Porsche Turbo ever built.

Its 3.8-liter flat six serves up 750Nm of torque, and 607hp (up from 580hp on the standard model) and this extra grunt equates to a 2.9-second 0-100km/h dash. It will also hit 200km/h within 9.6 seconds and eventually top out at 330km/h. Yet fuel economy remains unchanged. Somehow this supercar can manage 9.1l/100km on the combined cycle.

Thankfully, whether pushed hard or not, the car will stay glued to the road thanks to permanent all-wheel drive and four-wheel steering.

But even when standing still this car will turn heads thanks to its unique paint finish — Golden Yellow Metallic — plus the contrasting naked carbon fiber exterior elements, including carbon fiber exposed racing stripes.

This contrasting color combination continues throughout the cabin where the 18-way adjustable seats are double-wrapped in perforated leather, one layer yellow, the other black. There’s also contrasting yellow stitching in the headrests and a double racing stripe, also in yellow, running through the headliner.

Another first for this car is the inclusion on the options list of a matching Porsche Chronograph watch built from the same materials and using the same design details and paint scheme. For example, its face is formed from carbon fiber and the rotor is the same shape and finish as the car’s alloy wheels. Like the car, it is limited to 500 examples, and will retail for €9,950.

The final touch is a set of matching luggage designed specifically for the car. Consisting of two holdalls, a day bag and a suit bag, it will add a further €5474 to the car’s €259,992 base price.

As well as announcing the new car, Porsche on Thursday also confirmed that its in-house Porsche Exclusive workshop, that usually carries out custom work for clients, is being spun out into a fully-fledged service called Porsche Exclusive Manufaktur, complete with dedicated headquarters in Zuffenhausen.

The move brings the company up to speed with its most direct competitors — Ferrari, Lamborghini, Aston Martin and McLaren — each of whom already has a dedicated special operations and bespoke services business for their most discerning clients.

Skip across the ocean with these three luxury sea toys: The SEABOB, Searcher and Jetovator

Unleash your inner child with these adrenaline inducing aqua-gadgets!  We’ve all seen and done the usual jet-skiing, yachting and paragliding. This time, we’re switching things up with a little risky behaviour. From vessels that take you deep into the ocean to those that make you feel as though you’re walking on water, we take a look at three water-crafts that have been dominating the sea toy market.

CAYAGO SEABOB

© Seabob

A fan of James Bond’s heart pumping action scenes? You’re in luck. With this fascinating watersports gadget, you can now glide through water just like 007. Watersport vehicle company CAYAGO AG made waves amongst the watersport community with the SEABOB. Likened to an underwater scooter, these SEABOBs are high performance sea toys that enable users to glide both under and above water, providing a multi-sensory journey to the underwater world.

Placing modern lightweight construction quality at their highest regard, these SEABOBs weigh from 29kg to 35kg, depending on which model is purchased. SEABOB F5 weighs a very light 29kg but packs a punch with a propulsive force of 480 newtons. Even more impressive, the SEABOB F5 SR has a propulsive force of more than 680 newtons, alongside two rear fins to complete its sporty look.

Each of these vehicles is fitted with two separate full high definition cameras to capture your death defying stunts. One is fixed at the bow, while the other rests in the display to capture your point of view. It also doubles as an action camera for some groovy underwater selfies. As both cameras are linked up to LAN technology, the SEABOB is able to send your pictures and footage straight to your smartphone.

INNESPACE SEABREACHER

It’s a bird! It’s a plane! No, it’s a Seabreacher! Don’t be fooled, this high-performance sea toy might look like an ocean predator, but it is actually a semi-submersible watercraft. Shaped like marine animals such as sharks, whales and dolphins, each craft can be customised to the owner’s liking. These vessels are able to dive for up to five feet deep and launch out of water at a height of 20 feet. Take your friend on a ride in the two-seater watertight cockpit and marvel at the magnificent underwater world through the panoramic bubble top canopy.

Perform stunts and flips in this aquatic vessel! The craft is propelled by two-fins at the side, controlled by joysticks that the pilot manoeuvres. The tail, on the other hand, takes on the role of a rudder and is operated using foot pedals. A snorkel is also attached to the fin at the top of the vessel. On-board specifications include audio systems as well as front and rear LCD screens for better vision. The Seabreacher can be adapted to your personal preference, with customizable fit covers, trailers and airbrushing available.

For more information on prices, do visit Seabreacher.

JETOVATOR

From the same people that brought to you the Seabreacher, the Jetovator is a new aquatic flight craft that is somewhat like a hoverboard. Just like a hoverboard, users are able to attempt flips, twists and turns on the Jetovator. But unlike the previous two sea toys, the Jetovator depends on an existing personal watercraft (PWC) to power its thrusters.

This watersport accessory works by extending the ability of an existing PWC, much like waterskiing or wakeboarding. The craft redirects water from the PWC along a 40-foot hose to the bike, using the force to propel itself upwards to approximately 40 feet. Operated by pushing two handle thrusters, the Jetovator requires at least 180 hp to operate. On the other hand, there is also the Tandem Jetovator. With all the specifications of the original, the Tandem Jetovator is able to carry not one, but two riders with a total weight of up to 400 pounds. It boasts twin controls, allowing it to be steered from either the front or the rear seat. If you are new to watersports, the Tandem Jetovator would be the jet to begin with!
