Set Sail To Loewe Men’s Spring/Summer ’18 Paradise

Spring/Summer 2018

What better venue than Salvador Dalí’s house to stage a fantastical getaway that harks back to the brand’s and artist’s Spanish heritage and love for Surrealist art.

Together with Dalí’s zany interior decor, soft-hued geological walls, vibrant curvilinear structures and mounted taxidermy, Loewe’s Spring/Summer’18 Men’s collection unlocks the power of imagination by employing familiar objects to tap into the subconscious mind of the observer. This is evidently seen in Anderson’s playful adaptation of youthful imagery, orchestrating a paradise depicting the breeziness of summer and an idyllic life by the sea.

A series of characters and motifs have been materialised in various archetypes: souvenir-themed keychains (starfish and seahorse), messenger bags adorned with caricatured skull motif, graphic T-shirts screened with standard tourist typography and tote bags (in leather, canvas and weaved) designed for weekend getaways.

Anderson envisions the Loewe man to be a bold traveller at heart, laid-back but never compromising in style. Menswear silhouettes were designed to subvert traditional fits, showcasing short shorts and cut-out knitted tops.

Formal looks with hints of casual sportiness are rendered in muted hues and lightweight wool. Fabric choices are centered on functionality, with majority of the garments sewn in linens, poplins and washed canvas, best suited for balmy environments. Unencumbered and bold, the Loewe man enjoys life in style.

As with previous collections, Spring/Summer’18 continues to draw attention to Loewe’s signature artisanal touches — zippers that double as stripes, intricate appliqués and colourful embroideries. English textile designer William Morris lent his touch to hyper-saturated leaf patterns appearing in the collection, bringing Anderson’s whimsical aesthetic to life. Innovation and craft remain pillars of the Spanish label’s ethos, an undeniable truth that makes the soul of the Maison and positioning it uniquely in the menswear universe.

Loewe Men’s Spring/Summer’18 collection is definitely a lavish feast for the senses. As players of today’s post-truth society, Anderson perfectly captures what it means to craft our very own utopian world, subconsciously or not, blurring the lines between a dream-like state and reality. And we are ready to dive into Loewe’s paradise.

Lagoon Charters Start In Vietnam

Simpson Yacht Charters has launched this brand-new charter destination with the arrival of the luxury sailing catamaran Ellen Sophia, a Lagoon 560 S2, safely skippered by a western captain who has much sailing experience in Southeast Asia, plus an onboard chef providing gourmet meals. Ellen Sophia has four large double cabins, all with ensuite bathrooms and separate entrances.

She is very well-equipped with air-conditioning and generators, a fully geared-up modern kitchen, and entertainment systems. A spacious flybridge, cockpit and foredeck with trampoline are the bases for sunbathing, lounging and dining. Inquire directly regarding rates and seasons.

So, apart from coastal sailing, wining and dining, what is to see? A Simpson Yacht Charter manager says that Nha Trang has been considered one of the 30 most beautiful areas in the world, due to its combination of beaches, city and beautiful islands all within close proximity.

Crewed Lagoon 560 is the perfect platform for holidaying and taking an unusual view of the Vietnam Coast

Mun Island famous for colourful coral and fish is so named because in its SE it has high-rise cliffs with caves and grottoes and startling stones are as black as ebony. Marine researchers and oceanographers head here, and it is known as one of Vietnam’s best places for snorkelling and diving.

Bich Dam fishing village in the Hon Tre island group, about a two-hour sail, has white sand beaches, clear blue waters and, being on the most remote island in Nha Trang Bay, is free from tourists almost year-around. Hon Lon Lighthouse is one of five oldest in Vietnam. It takes a good hour for really fit trekkers to reach.

Downtown Nha Trang and beam view of the Lagoon 560

Nha Phu Lagoon is in a pleasant bay 15 km north of Nha Trang Beach. Check out the orchid caves at Hoa Lan Spring, where beautiful blooms hang from rocky interiors, or sunbathe at An Binh Beach before heading to the nearby wildlife sanctuary where peacocks and deer roam on protected land. Nha Phu is also called Monkey Island because it has over 1,200 monkeys. The Soviet Union raised monkeys here to use for science studies. When it collapsed in 1989, the monkeys were abandoned to fend for themselves.

Coconut Island, known too as Dam Bay, is one of the most beautiful beaches in Nha Trang Bay. Green coconuts are the piècede-résistance.

Diep Son Island is located in Van Phong Bay in Khanh Hoa Province. There are actually three islands connected to each other by sandbars. The place was little known until some social media posts brought visitors intrigued by the tiny archipelago.

Hon Mieu Island where Tri Nguyen Aquarium and Hon Mieu Fishing Village are located has simple, ancient buildings. The aquarium was built in 1971 by Le Can, a fisherman who hired locals to build a dam, thus forming a large pond which has become a sort of marine museum.

Doc Lech Beach is a white sand stretch 55 km north of Nha Trang City. Here Vietnamese culture and beach-bum lifestyles seem to mesh perfectly.

Ninh Van Bay, where one can anchor off the Six Senses Resort, Whale Island with its French colonial background, and Salanganes Island in Cam Ranh Bay, famous for swallow’s nest ingredients of bird’s nest soup, are other attractions.

Dolce Vita And Gulf Of Thailand

Dolce Vita And Gulf Of Thailand

Dolce Vita, as the name implies, is set up for those who want to enjoy the good life, and her cruising waters alternate between the Andaman Sea and the Gulf of Thailand, depending on the monsoons.

Much has been written about Phuket already in this Charter Focus, but little about Ko Samui and the Gulf, which actually boasts many more attractive offshore islands than better known ones off Thailand’s West Coast.

Lovely beaches of Ko Samui

A few large yachts have previously based at Ko Samui and Ocean Marina south of Pattaya, but it is taking time for the Gulf to become a really regular charter market.

From Ocean Marina in Jomtien-Pattaya, for example, one could voyage across the Gulf to the delightful summer royal capital of Hua Hin, where anything from extraordinary hedge-shaped topiary to elephants playing polo can be found.

Or voyage up the Chao Phraya River to Bangkok, as writer Joseph Conrad once did when he was a sea captain, savouring the vibrant riverbank scenes and perhaps arranging to tie up at a rice barge pier outside the charming Oriental Hotel, scene of many important episodes in the city’s past and present. There is indeed a Joseph Conrad Suite in the Old Wing, and one dedicated to another golden era writer and traveller, Somerset Maugham.

Ko Samui, most famous of the Gulf islands and like Phuket boasting an airport with connections to Bangkok and elsewhere, has its own stable of five star resorts, and is popular for regattas.

Chumpon (northwest of Ko Samui) is developing a marina, and the islands between Ko Chang and Cambodia are very spectacular and attracting cruising yachts and charters.

Omer Malaz’s Numarine, located across the Bosphorus from Istanbul, is a large modern yard going from strength to strength, and which now has a global marketing footprint. There are a wide range of models. First two of the Numarine 105 Hardtops were delivered last year. The yard says they have “assertive elegance” and “virile bravado”. How could one possibly disagree with such a description?

“You’ll be proud to welcome your discerning guests aboard the 105 Hardtop, which combines graceful aesthetics, ultra-modern interiors and advanced high-tech engineering to deliver the ultimate luxury performance with a sensory experience like no other”, says a spokesman.

“The luxurious custom finishes and hand-selected high-end materials used throughout the Numarine 105HT offer an absolutely first-class experience, and the impressive exterior provides plenty of refined al fresco space to entertain those on board.”

Designer Can Yalman, who has been with Numarine since it started, is once more responsible for the distinctive exterior styling and sophisticated interior. Eight guests can be accommodated in the ensuite cabins and a full-beam master stateroom with sofa, dressing table and large en suite bathroom.

Yoon joins Dior Homme: Proving Streetwear has overtaken Luxury

Ambush Designer Yoon Ahn Is Dior Homme’s New Jewelry Designer, tapped upon by Kim Jones after Kris Van Assche took a Creative role at Berluti.

Founded by designer Yoon Ahn and her husband, AMBUSH began as hip hop inspired streetwear jewellery label known for its youthful vibrancy and rawness; Now, Yoon has been tapped by LVMH Group to head Dior Homme jewellery as the brand’s latest hautebeast designer, an announcement which follows hot on the heels of LVMH group sister brand’s appointment of Virgil Abloh as new Artistic Director for Louis Vuitton menswear.

Yoon joins Dior Homme: Proving Streetwear has overtaken Luxury

Like Abloh, the founder and designer haute streetwear label AMBUSH, beginning only with streetwear accessories and jewellery before later becoming a unisex ready-to-wear brand, yet another case-in-point for LVMH group’s embrace for hypebeast, a genre which has been a major source of disruption for the luxury industry.

Ambush Designer Yoon Ahn Is Dior Homme’s New Jewelry Designer, tapped upon by Kim Jones after Kris Van Assche took a Creative role at Berluti. Ahn, a street style icon, naturally togged in mixed up AMBUSH ensembles, in her own right, will utilise her core skills as Dior Homme’s new jewellery designer. It’s no surprise that Kim Jones sought Yoon Ahn for the role, the two had collaborated back in 2012 when Jones was lead Creative at Louis Vuitton, working with AMBUSH to create “playbutton” essentially a wearable MP3 accessory.

Presently, up to 85% of the luxury market’s new growth is driven by a generation of Ys, Zs and millennials with Bain consulting predicting that by 2025, this generation of youthful shoppers will account for 45% of global luxury spend. This may not represent the majority  but it is an influential segment given how rapidly the millennial generation is influencing consumer purchase decision making in generations beyond their own. Not only are brands specifically catering marketing communications and campaigns for them but they are also shaping consumer perceptions on what brands are cool and en vogue.

As it stands, millennials consider traditional luxury brands to be “establishment” and stuffy and it has been a trans-generational perception shift which has seen brands like Louis Vuitton – Supreme make big wins and competitor brand’s like Kering Group’s Balenciaga and Gucci take market leader positions in the nascent (if not already peak) hautebeast genre of luxury designer goods.

Business of Luxury: The mainstreaming of Hype and LVMH’s response to market disruption

Streetwear is now mainstream and the hautebeast phenomena is best exemplified by the commercial alliance between former frenemies – Gucci and Dapper Dan. Once litigants in a lawsuit over Dapper Dan’s flagrant co-option of Gucci motifs into modified windbreakers and trackpants, 2017 was the year that Gucci made tacit endorsement of Dapper Dan’s preternatural zeitgeist cool and as of early 2018, Alessandro Michele made the endorsement real with the re-opening of Dapper Dan’s Harlem atelier, the tailoring shop which initially closed due to legal action, 25 years later.

Meanwhile Kering Group sister brand Balenciaga has been paving the way into the hearts of hypebaes with their early break from traditional luxury design – first with products of cultural snark – the appropriation of the East Asian “Wholesale Market Shopping bag” and then later with a high fashion interpretation of the ubiquitous IKEA shopping bag. Reflecting a streetwear-hautebeast approach, it is little wonder that Balenciaga’s top-selling products are its Triple S and Speed sneakers.

Balenciaga introduces snark on the level of Abloh's "Little Black Dress" with a high fashion interpretation of the ubiquitous IKEA shopping bag.

Kim Jones has lots of street cred and with his bet of putting Louis Vuitton and Supreme together paying off big time, it is easy to see why arch-rival LVMH is looking to cued-in, street credible designers like Abloh and now, Yoon Ahn to deliver street-smart drops and fashionably relevant productions.

That said, fashion appeal isn’t the only thing encouraging streetwear’s takeover of luxury. The marketing cycle is vastly different today than it was 10 years ago. Attention is fleeting with the wide array of social media platforms and rather than conform to the traditional spring-summer, autmn-winter fashion cycles, streetwear has dominated attention with the highly viral “blink and you’ll miss me” concept of fashion “drops” – targeted releases of new products that spawn all year around, delivering timed intervals of “hype”, like a drug, disseminated by What’s App screenshots, instagram and facebook. The speed of digital media is not only changing how we shop but how the more clued-in brands are dominating the news and attention cycle with well-timed releases and hype-worthy product collaborations.

That said, while hypebeast is in full-swing as LVMH, the world’s largest luxury conglomerate populates ranks of designers and creative heads with street-savvy streetwear designers, there’s the inevitable over-correction where hautebeast eventually becomes yet another fashion establishment trend and millennials depart in droves for the next “authentic expression” of self.

As it stands, Abloh as Louis Vuitton men’s Artistic Director, Jones as Dior Homme creative head and now Yoon Ahn as Dior Homme jewellery designer hints to a large overhaul of LVMH Group’s strategy towards menswear, it remains to be seen if the women’s side will be equally impacted. Considering the success of rival Gucci’s embroidered bee sneakers (a revival motif), it will not be surprising if LVMH already has plans in motion for women’s wear in its stable of brands.

Yoon Ahn’s jewellery for Dior Homme will accompany Jones’s debut collection at the Spring 2019 menswear shows in Paris in June.
