Cross-cultural art and architecture: LUXUO takes a look at the hidden sanctuary of Christian Develter at Warp Studio Siem Reap

A narrow gravel trail lead us to the studio of Belgian artist Christian Develter and his business partner Peter Smits. The location was not far from the centre of Siem Reap, an important tourist destination in Cambodia and the nearest town to Angkor Wat, one of the Wonders of the World.
Within the past few years, Siem Reap’s economy has flourished. While there are still pitfalls in infrastructure, it is not uncommon to see a well polished Bentley running along the dusty dirt roads. Luxury department store signs are now ubiquitous, and in every corner one can spot characters written in Chinese. This in no small way points to the influx of funding from overseas Chinese investors.
Christian Develter is a world-renowned artist, with works that are coveted by leading collectors. Born in Belgium, he lived and worked in Thailand since 1996. Along with Peter, Christian can be credited as one of the key players in making Bangkok’s Charoen Krung the artistic area it is today. They were the first creative team to renovate a degraded warehouse into a true art studio in the area, naming it Warp Studio before changing it to Warehouse30. As the area became more popular, the rent prices soared, and it became less viable to operate their studio in Bangkok. Two years ago, Develter and his partner made a calculated move to Siem Reap.
The phenomenon of revitalising urban neighbourhoods to become hip districts for the middle class is called gentrification. It’s a difficult cycle to avoid and happens everywhere around the world, from Soho in New York to Meat packing Street in London.
With a pop-art and semi-abstract style, Christian Develter is most famous for his paintings of women’s faces. The beautiful women are portrayed in bold graphic colours, often painted with patterns inspired by the facial tattoos of Chin women, an ethnic minority group in Myanmar.
When asked why they decided on Cambodia, Peter replied, “People all over the world come to Siem Reap.” After all, art collectors and affluent people are already drawn to the grandeur of Angkor’s temples.
In the past ten years, Siem Reap has become a major destination. Tourists from around the world flock there to see the historical sites built by the ancient Khmer. To support this influx of discerning travellers, luxury hotels and art galleries have sprung up like mushrooms after the rain.
Christian and Peter saw that that the cost of living in Siem Reap would be much more suitable than Bangkok. When they decided to leave Charoen Krung, they knew they would have to create a new studio that served as both an art space and home. The new Warp Studio is a modern building with a curved concrete roof and horizontal openings inspired by Phnom Penh’s 1948 Central Market. The art deco structure was designed by French modernist architect Jean Desbois.
The interior space is light and airy, filled by Christian’s vivid paintings. The look is very clean compared to the studios of many other artists, and light shines in from the roof openings designed specifically for a tropical environment.
Not far from the studio where Christian works is the location of a local wooden house where he and Peter reside. It was a space they adapted by lifting up the building’s foundations to create an open and airy ground floor. The balcony was also expanded for better use. From the outside, the wooden house perfectly juxtaposes the modern concrete studio building. Inside, it is filled with the warmth of dark woods and antiques such as lacquerware from Burma and royal relics from China. Some contemporary wood furniture from close friend, P.Tendercool can also be spotted. Behind the house is a large balcony that opens up to a magnificent view of green rice fields. The house is open, without a screen to block the windows or doors, because there are surprisingly no mosquitoes!
Another amazing aspect of this beautiful piece of land is its location near an ancient archaeological area that was once a 12th Century Hindu temple. After we finished the visit to the studio, Peter and Christian took us off road to see the structures which stood only 400 meters away.
The art industry in Cambodia is active and moving forward. There are many new galleries and events, with Cambodian artists looking to the world stage. Peter tells us that although Cambodia has many great local artists, Thailand has the potential to become the leader in art for the ASEAN region. This is due to Thailand’s readiness to compete in this field, even compared to other countries like Singapore. This is the main reason the two continue to travel to Bangkok frequently.

เศรษฐกิจของเมืองเสียมราฐเติบโตขึ้นมาก ทว่าโครงสร้างพื้นฐานยังต้องพัฒนาอยู่มาก แต่เราก็จะเห็นรถหรูอย่าง Bentley วิ่งคลุกฝุ่นตามท้องถนนลูกรังจำนวนมาก ป้ายอาคาร ห้างหรูต่างๆ ปรากฏตัวหนังสือภาษาจีนอยู่แทบทุกมุมเมือง ยืนยันถึงการไหลเข้ามาของเงินจากนักลงทุนจีนจำนวนมหาศาล
Christian และ Peter เป็นศิลปินที่มีชื่อเสียงระดับโลก ผลงานของเขาเป็นที่ต้องการของนักสะสมชั้นนำ เกิดที่ประเทศเบลเยียม แต่มาอาศัยใช้ชีวิตอยู่ในเมืองไทยมาตั้งแต่ปี 1996 พวกเขาเป็นหนึ่งในบุคคลสำคัญที่ทำให้จริญกรุงกลายเป็นย่านสร้างสรรค์อย่างที่เห็นในปัจจุบัน เพราะเป็นคนทำงานสร้างสรรค์กลุ่มแรกๆ ที่เข้ามาเปลี่ยนโกดังที่เสื่อมโทรม ให้กลายเป็นสตูโอศิลปะสุดเก๋ไก๋ที่ชื่อ Warp Studio ก่อนจะเปลี่ยนเป็น Warehouse30 ในปัจจุบัน เมื่อพื้นที่พัฒนากลายเป็นสถานที่ฮิปๆ ราคาค่าเช่าก็ถีบตัวสูงขึ้น จนศิลปินคำนวณแล้วว่าไม่คุ้ม ก็เลยตัดสินใจย้ายมาสำมะโนครัวมาอยู่เมืองเสียมราฐ ประเทศกัมพูชาเมื่อราวสองปีที่ผ่านมา
ปรากฏการณ์เปลี่ยนพื้นที่เมืองที่คนเมินให้กลายเป็นย่านฮิปๆ ของเหล่ามิดเดิ้ลคลาส ที่เรียกว่า Gentrification เป็นวัฏจักรที่ยากจะหลีกเลี่ยง และเกิดขึ้นทุกที่ทั่วโลก ไม่ว่าจะเป็นย่าน Soho ในนิวยอร์ก หรือ Meat Packing Street ในลอนดอน แน่นอนว่า ย่านเจริญกรุง ก็เป็นเช่นกัน
งานศิลปะของ Christian Develter เป็นป็อบอาร์ตกึ่งนามธรรม ผลงานที่สร้างชื่อและหลายคนอาจคุ้นตา คือภาพใบหน้าผู้หญิงที่มีกราฟิกและสีสันที่จัดจ้าน ที่เขาได้แรงบันดาลใจจากรอยสักบนใบหน้าของหญิงสาวชาวชีน (Chin) ชนกลุ่มน้อยในประเทศเมียนมา
เมื่อถามว่าทำไมถึงย้ายมาที่นี่ Peter ตอบว่า ‘คนทั่วโลก กำลังมุ่งหน้ามาสู่เสียมราฐ’ คนมีเงินและนักสะสมศิลปะจำนวนมากเดินทางมาชมความอลังการของโบราณสถานที่นี่อยู่แล้ว ในช่วงสิบปีที่ผ่านมา เสียมราฐเติบโตอย่างก้าวกระโดด นักท่องเที่ยวจากทั่วโลกมุ่งหน้ามาชมโบราณสถาน อารยธรรมเก่าแก่ที่เมืองนี้ปีละหลายล้านคน โรงแรมหรู แกลเลอรีศิลปะ ผุดขึ้นราวกับเห็ดหน้าฝน
หลังจากที่จำเป็นต้องย้ายออกจาก Warp Studio สตูดิโอทำงานศิลปะย่านเจริญกรุง พวกเขามองหาที่อยู่ใหม่ ทั้งสองเห็นว่าค่าครองชีพที่เสียบเรียบถูกกว่ากรุงเทพฯ มาก สามารถสร้างสตูดิโอและบ้านพักใหม่ที่ใหญ่ว่าได้ สตูดิโอใหม่ของพวกเขาเป็นอาคารแบบโมเดิร์น หลังคาคอนกรีตทรงโค้งมีช่องเปิดแนวนอน ได้แรงบันดาลใจจากตลาดเก่ากลางกรุงพนมเปญ สถาปัตยกรรมอาร์ตเดโคออกแบบโดยสถาปนิกโมเดิร์นิสต์ชาวฝรั่งเศส Jean Desbois
พื้นที่ภายในนั้นโปร่งโล่ง รายล้อมไปด้วยภาพวาดของ Christian มันดูเนียบสุดๆ สะอาดสะอ้านผิดกับภาพสตูดิโอทำงานของศิลปินทั่วไป แสงสว่างส่องเข้าถึงด้านในด้วยช่องเปิดที่ออกแบบพิเศษเพื่อการอาศัยอยู่ในเมืองร้อนชิ้นโดยเฉพาะ
ไม่ไกลจากสตูดิโอที่ใช้ทำงาน เป็นที่ตั้งของเรือนไม้พื้นถิ่นที่ Christian และ Peter ซื้อมาปลูกใหม่ แต่ปรับเปลี่ยนให้มีสเปซให้เป็นพื้นที่อยู่อาศัย ใต้ถุนถูกยกให้สูงโปร่งขึ้นกว่าเดิม เพิ่มระเบียง ขยายห้องให้สัดส่วนเหมาะสมกับการใช้งาน แต่โดยรวมยังดูเป็นบ้านไม้ของเดิม ไม่รู้เลยว่าเป็นการดัดแปลงอาคารไม้หลังนี้ ดูแตกต่างจากสตูดิโอคอนกรีตที่ตั้งอยู่ข้างๆ อย่างสิ้นเชิง มีความอบอุ่นของไม้เก่าสีน้ำตาลเข้ม เต็มไปด้วยของโบราณ อย่างเครื่องเขินจากพม่า เก้าอี้ ไม้สไตล์โคโลเนียล ไปจนถึง ราชสารโบราณขององค์จักพรรดิจีน ถูกจัดวางร่วมอยู่เฟอร์นิเจอร์ไม้ดีไซน์ร่วมสมัยของเพื่อนรักจากแบรนด์ P.Tendercool ได้อย่างไม่ขัดเขิน ด้านหลังบ้านไม้ เป็นระเบียงขนาดใหญ่ติดกับ สระดิน มองออกไปเห็นทุ่งนาสีเขียวสุดลูกหูลูกตา เรือนไม้หลังนี้เปิดโล่ง ไม่มีมุ้งลวดให้ระคายสายตา เพราะไม่มียุง!
ความเจ๋งอีกอย่างคือ ที่ดินผืนงามแห่งนี้ตั้งอยู่ไม่ไกลจากปราสาทหินโบราณอายุกว่าพันปี หนึ่งในพื้นที่โบราณสถาน นครวัด-นครธรม หลังจากที่เราเยี่ยมชมสตูดิโอพวกเขาเสร็จแล้ว Peter และ Christian ก็พาเราขึ้นออฟโรดไปชมปราสาทหินที่อยู่ห่างไปราว 400 เมตร!
ความเคลื่อนไหวของวงการศิลปะในกัมพูชาก็กำลังคึกคัก มีแกลเลอรีศิลปะเกิดขึ้นจำนวนมาก เช่นเดียวกับศิลปินร่วมสมัยจากกัมพูชาเองก็กำลังเป็นที่จับตามมองในเวทีโลก แต่ Peter ก็บอกกับเราว่า แม้ว่ากัมพูชาจะมีศิลปินเก่งๆ จำนวนมาก แต่เมืองไทยนั้นมีศักยภาพที่จะเป็นผู้นำด้านศิลปะในภูมิภาคของอาเซียน ด้วยความพร้อมหลายๆ อย่าง เมื่อเทียบกับประเทศเพื่อบ้าน แม้แต่สิงคโปร์ นั่นคือสาเหตุที่พวกเขายังเดินทางมากรุงเทพฯ อยู่เนืองๆ
