Is Thai Craft worth investing in? The director of SACICT has the answer.

Benjarong, silverwork and gold gilding… these are not uncommon amongst Thai collectors. However, they may be unfamiliar to the general public as collectors tend to keep their prized objects to themselves. For this reason, Thai crafts are often relegated to cabinets and not put on display for the new generation to see.
But things are changing as The SUPPORT Arts and Crafts International Centre of Thailand (SACICT) has started the ‘Today’s Life Crafts’ initiative. The initiative is set to change the perspective of Thai craftsmanship in everyday life, in addition to creating a database of traditional craftwork. Young designers as well as artisans from Thailand and neighbouring countries were invited to exchange knowledge and develop contemporary craftsmanship for the modern world that maintain a traditional Thai charm.
Ms Ampawan Pichalai, director of SACICT says that in addition to being a collectable item, investing in Thai craft is also a good idea, “Our gold is priced with both the value of the raw material and the added craftsmanship. The goldsmiths who created these items have been doing this since ancient times, and there are very few of them remaining. Even if the new generation learns the same skills, they may not know all of the ancient patterns. The value of these pieces is akin to buying antiques,” Ms Ampawan explains, “Today, foreigners are very interested in Thai craftwork. We have shops located in the airport at both Suvarnabhumi and Phuket. Even though the number of Chinese tourists have declined, our sales increased by 42% last year.” It seems local Thais may need to hurry if they want to get a hold of these items.

เครื่องเบญจรงค์ เครื่องเงิน งานลงรักปิดทอง…. ไม่แปลกเลยที่งานหัตถศิลป์ไทยเหล่านี้ล้วนแล้วแต่เป็นที่รู้จักในหมู่นักสะสม แต่อาจจะไม่ใช่ในหมู่บุคคลทั่วไปนัก เพราะพอขึ้นชื่อว่าเป็นของสะสมแล้ว แน่นอนว่านักสะสมส่วนใหญ่ก็มักจะเก็บไว้เชยชมเองมากกว่าท่ีจะแบ่งปันกับคนอื่น ด้วยเหตุนี้ งานคราฟต์ของไทยจึงมักถูกเชิญขึ้นหิ้ง หรืออยู่ในตู้ และไม่ได้ออกมาปรากฏตัวให้คนรุ่นใหม่ได้เห็นนัก
แต่ทุกอย่างเริ่มเปลี่ยนไปเมื่อศูนย์ศิลปาชีพระหว่างประเทศ หรือ SACICT ผุดคอนเซ็ปต์ Today’s Life Crafts ที่เปลี่ยนมุมมองของงานหัตถศิลป์ไทยให้กลายเป็นงานดีไซน์ที่สามารถนำมาประยุกต์ใช้ในชีวิตประจำวันได้มากยิ่งขึ้น นอกจากจะมีการจัดทำฐานข้อมูลของงานคราฟต์แบบดั้งเดิมแล้ว ยังมีการเชิญนักออกแบบรุ่นใหม่ รวมถึงเหล่าช่างฝีมือจากประเทศเพื่อนบ้านมาแลกเปลี่ยนองค์ความรู้ และช่วยพัฒนาต่อยอดให้งานหัตถศิลป์ไทยมีความร่วมสมัย เข้ากับไลฟ์สไตล์คนยุคใหม่มากยิ่งขึ้น แต่ในขณะเดียวกันก็ยังรักษาเสน่ห์งานงานฝีมือไทยเอาไว้
คุณอัมพวัน พิชาลัย ผู้อำนวยการ SACICT ยังกล่าวอีกว่านอกจากจะเก็บเป็นของสะสมแล้ว การลงทุนในงานหัตถศิลป์ไทยในตอนนี้อาจเป็นความคิดที่ดี “อย่างเช่นเครื่องทอง ราคาของงานก็จะตั้งต้นที่ราคาทอง บวกด้วยคุณค่าของงานฝีมือ และยิ่งช่างทองที่เป็นช่างทองแบบโบราณในทุกวันนี้เหลือน้อยลงมาก เรียกว่าเหลือไม่กี่รายแล้ว และรูปแบบที่ทำอยู่ ถึงคนรุ่นใหม่จะเรียนรู้แต่ก็รับไปได้ไม่หมด เพราะคนรุ่นใหม่อาจจะไม่ได้เห็นของเดิมมาตั้งแต่อดีต มูลค่าของชิ้นงานจึงเหมือนกับเวลาเราซื้องานของเก่าค่ะ” คุณอัมพวันเล่า “ทุกวันนี้ ชาวต่างชาติสนใจงานคราฟต์ของประเทศไทยมาก เรามีร้านค้าอยู่ที่สนามบินทั้งสุวรรณภูมิและภูเก็ต มีอยู่ช่วงหนึ่งนักท่องเที่ยวจีนอาจจะลดลง แต่ยอดขายของเราขยายตัวถึง 42% เมื่อปีที่แล้ว” ฉะนั้นคนไทยเองอาจจะต้องรีบหน่อยแล้วล่ะ
