Luxuo Thailand ได้พบกับคุณดิฐวัฒน์ อิสสระ ในฐานะผู้ช่วยกรรมการผู้จัดการสายงานพัฒนาธุรกิจ บริษัท ชาญอิสสระ ดีเวล็อปเมนท์ จำกัด (มหาชน) จึงได้สัมภาษณ์อย่างเป็นกันเองเกี่ยวกับบทบาทสำคัญในการพัฒนาต่อยอดธุรกิจอสังหาริมทรัพย์จากการวางรากฐานมาอย่างยาวนานกว่า 30 ปีของคุณปู่และคุณพ่อ
คุณดูแลรับผิดชอบงานส่วนไหนบ้าง
ผมประจำที่สำนักงานใหญ่ หลักๆ เลยจะรับผิดชอบภาพรวมในส่วนของ Business Development ของเครือชาญอิสสระทั้งหมด โดยดูว่าโปรดักต์เป็นอย่างที่เราต้องการหรือเปล่า อย่างปีที่แล้วเราเปิดตัว อิสสระเรสซิเดนท์ พระราม 9 กับ บ้านอิสสระ บางนา ซึ่งโซนนี้ผมดูตั้งแต่หาที่ดิน ดูความเป็นไปได้ กับทีม BD เรา เสร็จแล้วก็จะเลือกทีมออกแบบ ทีมสถาปนิก ทีมตกแต่งภายใน ทีมงานระบบ ต่อด้วยตัวแทนขายกับทีมขายของเราเอง
นอกจากนี้ยังดูโปรเจ็กต์ ทิวทะเลเอสเตท ชะอำ-หัวหิน เป็นการร่วมทุนระหว่าง บริษัท อิสสระ ดีเวลอปเมนท์ จำกัด (มหาชน) บริษัท สหพัฒนพิบูล จำกัด (มหาชน) และ บริษัท ไอ.ซี.ซี. อินเตอร์เนชั่นแนล จำกัด (มหาชน) บนพื้นที่ 110 ไร่ เราทำคอนโดเสร็จไปแล้ว 3 เฟส กำลังจะเปิดฝั่งเมนโฮเทลเพิ่มอีก แล้วก็จะทำปั๊มน้ำมัน กับคอมมิวนิตี้มอลล์เล็กๆ เป็นโปรเจ็กต์ที่มีทั้งที่อยู่อาศัย โรงแรม และคอมเมอร์เชียลรวมกัน ก็ท้าทายดีครับ
วางแผนล่วงหน้าไหมว่าจะต้องมาช่วยที่บ้าน
ไม่ได้นึกว่าจะอยากทำ หรือไม่อยากทำ แต่คิดมาตลอดว่าเราต้องทำ ไม่ใช่ว่าเพราะพ่อแม่ พวกท่านไม่เคยบอกเลยว่าต้องกลับมาทำ ตอนป๊าไปดูที่หรือไปดูไซต์ก่อสร้างก็จะพาไปตั้งแต่เด็กๆ เหมือนเป็นเนเจอร์ของเรา แล้วเราก็รู้ว่าบริษัทนี้เป็นบริษัทที่เลี้ยงดูครอบครัวอิสสระ เลี้ยงดูครอบครัวผมมาและตัวผมเองด้วย มันเป็นความรู้สึกว่า ก็เขาเลี้ยงดูเรามา ยังไงก็ต้องกลับมาช่วยที่นี่ เลยคิดว่าเราควรทำอะไรที่จะช่วยบริษัทได้ดีที่สุด
กดดันไหมที่เข้ามาบริหารธุรกิจที่คุณพ่อสร้างไว้จนมีชื่อเสียงขนาดนี้
ตอนเด็กๆ ผมชอบวิชาเลข ฟิสิกส์ กับชอบศิลปะ ซึ่งเป็นสองขั้วที่ค้านกันอยู่ จริงๆ ถ้าถามว่าชอบอะไรมากที่สุด ผมชอบอาร์ตอยู่แล้ว แต่ผมเลือกวิศวะตอนที่จะเข้ามหาวิทยาลัย เพราะคิดว่าบริษัทเราก่อสร้างตึก อาคาร เราควรจะเรียนด้านนี้ ซึ่งก็ไม่ได้แปลว่าเป็นความคิดที่ถูกต้อง เพราะตอนนั้นยังเด็กอยู่ แต่มันเหมือนเราเตรียมตัวเองว่าอยากจะทำอะไรที่มันดีที่สุด อยากเรียนสายที่ตรงที่สุดเพื่อจะได้เอามาใช้ให้ดีที่สุด โดยหวังว่าเราจะมีคุณค่าต่อบริษัทมากที่สุด
ผมบอกป๊ากับแม่ว่าถ้าเรียนเอนจิเนียร์แล้ว คงไม่มีเวลาทำงานอาร์ตแน่เลย งั้นขอ gap year หนึ่งปีไปเรียนอาร์ต แล้วป๊ากับแม่ก็ใจดี อย่างที่บอกว่าท่านเป็นพ่อแม่ที่ไม่เคยบังคับอะไร ถ้าเห็นว่าลูกต้องการจะทำอะไรและทำจริงๆ ท่านให้อยู่แล้ว พอเรียนอาร์ตได้ปีหนึ่งก็ย้ายไปเรียนเอนจิเนียร์ที่มหาวิทยาลัยอิมพีเรียล เรารู้เลยว่าสู้คนอื่นไม่ได้เพราะเราไม่ได้สนใจด้านเอนจิเนียร์มากเท่าเขา จึงย้ายมาเรียนโปรดักต์ดีไซน์ที่เซนต์มาร์ตินส์ ตอนเรียนก็สนุก ไม่ได้คิดอะไรมาก พอกลับมาก็มีคำถามให้ตัวเองว่ามันจะช่วยธุรกิจที่บ้านเราได้จริงไหม คือค่อนข้างจะกังวล แต่หลังจากกลับมาสัก 2-3 ปีก็หายห่วง รู้สึกว่าโชคดีและถูกมากเลยที่จบโปรดักต์ดีไซน์
จริงๆ เรียนเอนจิเนียร์ก็ดีนะ เพราะผมจะคุยกับทีมงานรู้เรื่อง ตอนประชุมการเงินผมก็เข้าใจตัวเลข ตอนอยู่ในตำแหน่งที่ต้องตัดสินใจ การเข้าใจโปรดักต์ การเข้าใจลูกค้า การสื่อสารกับลูกค้า การทำมาร์เก็ตติ้ง มีความสำคัญมากกับการขาย เรื่องการตีโจทย์ให้แตกตั้งแต่แรกว่าโปรดักต์ต่อไปจะเป็นอะไร หรือว่าที่ดินตรงนี้ควรจะสร้างบ้านเดี่ยว คอนโด หรือโรงแรม มีความสำคัญมาก และบังเอิญมันก็ตรงกับเรื่องโปรดักต์ดีไซน์
เคยเจออุปสรรคหนักๆ บ้างไหม
อาจจะไม่ได้เกี่ยวกับงานโดยตรง เพราะการที่ผมไปเรียนอังกฤษตั้งแต่ 9 ขวบ จนอายุ 24 ตอนย้ายกลับมา คือเมืองไทยเป็นบ้านผม แต่ผมเรียนที่อังกฤษนาน พอกลับมาใช้ชีวิตที่นี่ การปรับตัวเข้ากับวัฒนธรรมก็เป็นความท้าทายอย่างหนึ่งที่ผมคิดว่าถ้าเรารีบเร่งเกินไปอาจจะผิดพลาดได้ และไม่ใช่แค่วัฒนธรรม แต่รวมถึงการกลับมาเข้าองค์กรของชาญอิสสระด้วย พนักงานที่อยู่มานานเป็น 10-20 ปีมีเยอะมาก เราต้องค่อยเป็นค่อยไป จะทำยังไงให้เข้ากับวัฒนธรรมขององค์กรได้ ทำยังไงถึงเราจะเติบโตขึ้นเป็นผู้นำโดยที่คนในบริษัททั้งเก่าและใหม่ซัพพอร์ตเรา รักเรา และเห็นด้วยกับเรา ไม่ใช่ด้วยชื่อเรา
ผมเข้ามาในตำแหน่งที่ต่ำที่สุดแล้วล่ะ ตอนนั้นผมเป็นกราฟิกดีไซเนอร์คนแรกของชาญอิสสระ และเป็น Executive Trainee ซึ่งจะเข้าประชุมทุกนัด ตั้งแต่การตลาด การเงิน ฝ่ายขาย เหมือนมานั่งฟังไม่ใช่สั่งงาน ผมนั่งฟังอยู่ประมาณ 3-4 ปี ส่วนงานกราฟิก ผมก็เริ่มตั้งแต่งานออกแบบกระเป๋าผ้า โบรชัวร์ ดูแลงานอีเวนต์ ตอนนี้ผ่านไป 13 ปี รู้สึกว่าชนะใจพี่ๆ ร่วมงานได้แล้ว คิดว่าเขาไว้ใจเรา (หัวเราะ)
ไอดอลในแง่ของการทำงาน
ใกล้ตัวก็คือคุณพ่อ ท่านทำงานเก่ง ทำงานหนักมาก แต่ยังมีเวลาให้ครอบครัว ให้เพื่อน ให้กับกิจกรรมของเขา ผมเลยรู้สึกว่าชีวิตเราถ้าจะประสบความสำเร็จมันก็ไม่ใช่แค่เรื่องเงิน ผมว่าการทำงานโดยไม่มีเวลาอยู่กับคนที่ผมรัก ชีวิตมันก็ไม่มีคุณค่า
บ้านในฝันของคุณ
คำว่าบ้าน ภาษาอังกฤษคือคำว่า Home ไม่ใช่ House เป็นสถานที่ที่เราคุ้นเคย สบายใจ ผ่อนคลาย และใช้ชีวิตกับคนที่สำคัญกับเรา นั่นคือความรู้สึกของบ้านในความหมายของผม ผมเคยชินกับการเห็นคุณแม่ คุณน้า คุณยาย ทานข้าวด้วยกันแทบจะทุกวันซึ่งเป็นอะไรที่ดี ตอนนี้ก็เลยพยายามกลับไปทานข้าวกับที่บ้านให้มากขึ้น
The third-generation businessman speaks to Luxuo Thailand about his work, experience and hopes.

Young Ditawat Issara is the Assistant Managing Director at Charn Issara Development PLC – a real estate company built by his grandfather and father over a period of longer than 30 years. Luxuo Thailand caught him for an interview about his roles in the further growth of empire.
What are your areas of responsibility?
I work at our head office and am responsible for all the business development of the Charn Issara Group. I make sure the products are executed the way we envisioned them. For example, last year, we launched Issara Residence Rama IX and Bann Issara Bangna. My work began as early as at the stage of land scouting. I then conducted feasibility study with our BD team before choosing the design team, the architect team, the interior design team, the infrastructure team, as well as sales agents and in-house sales teams.
Another project I work on is Thew Talay Estate in Cha-Am and Hua Hin area. This is a joint venture between Issara Development PLC, Saha Pattana Piboon PLC and I.C.C. International PLC. on a land measuring 110 rai (44 acres). We have already completed three condominium phases and are in the process of launching the main hotel. We will then work on a gas station and a small community mall. It will be a mixed-use project with residences, hotel and commercial space, all in one. It is challenging in a good way.
Was your role in the family business pre-determined?
I didn’t think in terms of whether or not I wanted to or did not want to do this. But it has always been a conscious choice, and not because of my parents because they never said anything about this. My dad used to take me to check out locations and construction sites when I was very young. It became like my second nature. I was aware that this company provided for the Issara family including myself. I feel this need to reciprocate so I thought about how best I could help with the company.
Was it a big pressure managing the business built by your father to this level of fame?
When I was a child, I liked mathematics, physics and art. It was like I had two conflicting callings. If you asked me what I enjoyed the most, I would have said art, but I chose to study engineering in university because I knew our business is about construction. It was the logical choice but not necessarily the correct idea. I was young. I felt that if I wanted to do this right, I need to study in the most relevant field possible in order to bring the greatest value to the company.
I told my parents that if I studied engineering, I wouldn’t have the time to pursue my art. So, I asked for a gap year when I could study art, and my parents were generous with this request. As I said, they never forced me to do anything. If they saw I wanted to do something and was serious about it, they would support me. So, after one year of studying art, I went on to study engineering at Imperial College. I knew right away I couldn’t compete with the others as I was not as into engineering as they were. So I switched to study product design at Saint Martin’s. It was fun in he beginning. I didn’t give it much thought. Then I became worried after my return if it would do any good for our family business. The worry went away after two or three years. I felt I was lucky and that I made the right choice to study product design.
Honestly, my time studying engineer was useful. I can have meaningful conversations with my teams; I understand the numbers in financial meetings. When I am in the position to make a call, I have understanding of the product, the clients, the way to communicate with them and the choice of marketing to do. This is most crucial for successful sales. We need to be able to decide on the right product in the first place. We need to choose whether to build single houses, a condominium or a hotel. It is very important and it happens to fall in the realm of product design.
Have you ever faced any major obstacles?
There was this thing but it wasn’t directly related to work itself. I went to study in England from the age of nine to 24. Thailand was always my home country, but my years there meant I had to readjust to the Thai culture upon my return. It was quite a challenge. I felt that I could make a mistake if I rushed it. And it was not just about the Thai culture, but the specific return to Charn Issara as an organisation as well. Many employees had been with us for 10 or 20 years. I had to go slow, finding a way to merge with the organisational culture. I needed to find a way to rise as a leader who was supported by old and young people within the company, to gain support and love for what I stood for and not just because of my name.
I started at the bottom as a graphic designer – the first at Charn Issara. As an executive trainee, I attended meetings whether they were marketing, finance or sales. I would just sit and listen without giving any orders for three or for years. My graphic work involved designing of fabric bags and brochures. I handled events as well. After 13 years, I feel I have earned the trust of people who work here [laughs].
Who is your idol in professional life?
Nearest to me would be my father. He is very good at what he does. He works hard, but he still has time for his family, friends and the things he likes to do. I feel that success is not just proven by money. It is my opinion that life is without values if your work deprives you of your time with loved ones.
Tell us about your dream house.
I would say I have a dream home, not a dream house. Home is a place of comfort and relaxation where we can spend time with people who matter. That is what a home means to me. I am used to seeing my mom, my aunts and my grandmother sharing a meal together every day and I think that was good. So now I try to go home and have dinner with my family more often.
