โดยปกติแล้วจะมีแบรนด์นาฬิกาอยู่กลุ่มหนึ่งที่ทำนาฬิกาประจำปีนักษัตรอย่างต่อเนื่องทุกปี แต่คงด้วยความที่ว่าปีนี้เป็นปีมังกร วงการนาฬิกาจึงคึกคักแบบฉุดไม่อยู่ด้วยการเปิดตัวนาฬิการุ่นพิเศษรุ่นแล้วรุ่นเล่าที่ถ่ายทอดความคิดสร้างสรรค์ผ่านงานฝีมือและเทคนิคชนิดต่างๆ จนเราต้องขอรวบรวมมานำเสนอ

Ulysse Nardin Blast Tourbillon Dragon ผสมผสานดีไซน์มังกรแกะสลักจากโรสโกลด์เข้ากับบริดจ์รูปตัว X อันเป็นสถาปัตยกรรมสำคัญของเครื่อง UN-172 ซึ่งมีกำลังลานสำรองนาน 3 วันรุ่นนี้ได้อย่างแนบเนียนจนดูราวกับว่ามังกรนั้นกำลังเลื้อยไปหาไข่มุกในตำนานที่ติดตั้งอยู่เหนือชุดกลไกฟลายอิ้งตูร์บิยอง ทั้งหมดดูร่วมสมัยและมีมิติ แตกต่างจากสมัยก่อนที่ Ulysse Nardin จะใช้เทคนิคเอนาเมลเพื่อสร้างลวดลายมังกรบนหน้าปัดที่เรียบแบนเท่านั้น

ยังไม่หมดเพียงเท่านั้น เพราะว่า Genus ก็นำเอานาฬิกา GNS1.2 ที่เคยได้รับรางวัล Mechanical Exception Watch Prize จากรายการ GPHG เมื่อปี ค.ศ. 2019 มาดัดแปลงด้วยการติดตั้งทองคำที่แกะสลักเป็นชิ้นส่วนรูปหัว ลำตัวและส่วนต่างๆ ของมังกรลงบนกลไกแสดงค่านาทีแบบสายพานที่เลี้ยวลดไปมารอบแกนด้านบนและด้านล่างของหน้าปัดได้อย่างลงตัว พร้อมตั้งชื่อรุ่นผลงานชิ้นรับปีมังกรนี้ว่า GNS1.2 Dragon ดูแบบภาพนิ่งอย่างในหน้านิตยสารนี้อาจจะยังนึกจังหวะการทำงานไม่ออก แต่ถ้าไปดูวีดีโอในโซเชียลมีเดียของเราหรือของ Genus ก็จะร้องว้าวทันที
ผ่านมาหลายเรือนแล้วแต่ว่ายังไม่มีรุ่นใดมีฟังก์ชั่นปฏิทินเลย แน่นอนว่านาฬิกาที่เราเลือกมานำเสนอจะต้องเป็น Blancpain Villeret Traditional Chinese Calendar ตัวเรือนเร้ดโกลด์ซึ่งมีคอมพลิเคชั่นปฏิทินจีนเพื่อแสดงค่าต่างๆ ได้แก่ ปีนักษัตร ชั่วโมงแบบจีนซึ่งมีชั่วโมงละ 120 นาที รอบ 60 ปีของธาตุและหยินหยาง แต่ก็ไม่ลืมใส่เข็มวันที่เพื่อชี้ไปยังตัวเลขวันที่ตามปฏิทินสากลที่อยู่รอบนอกหน้าปัดเอนาเมลสีเขียวด้วย บนโรเตอร์มีแกะสลักรูปมังกรและคำว่า “มังกร” และ “ไม้” เป็นภาษาจีน พร้อมประดับรูบี้หนึ่งเม็ดเก๋ๆ ไม่เหมือนใคร
ทางด้าน Grand Seiko เลือกเส้นทางสายมินิมอลโดยไม่มีมังกรให้เห็นเด่นชัดบนนาฬิกา Red Dragon SBGH323G แต่ว่าเลือกทำหน้าปัดลวดลายรัศมีสามมิติเป็นสีแดงเบอร์กันดีเพื่อสื่อถึงความมงคล ตัวเรือนเป็นดีไซน์ทรง 62GS สุดคลาสสิก ภายในบรรจุเครื่องไฮบีทขึ้นลานแบบอัตโนมัติรุ่นคาลิเบอร์ 9S85 ซึ่งมีกำลังลานสำรอง 55 ชั่วโมง และจำกัดจำนวนการผลิตเพียงแค่ 88 เรือนเท่านั้น
นาฬิกาปีมังกร 4 เรือนสุดท้ายในบทความนี้เป็นแนวโมเดิร์นอาร์ตที่ฉีกไปคนละแนวกันทั้งหมด ได้แก่ Hublot Spirit of Big Bang Titanium Dragon ที่ถ่ายทอดลวดลายหัวมังกรจากงานกระดาษตัดของศิลปินชาวจีนเฉินเฝิ่นหวานออกมาเป็นหน้าปัดแบบ 5 ระดับชั้นซึ่งเป็นตัวแทนของความมั่งมี พละกำลังและภูมิปัญญา สายยางของนาฬิกาก็ได้รับการตกแต่งเป็นลวดลายเกล็ดมังกรด้วยเทคนิคมาร์เคททรีในโทนสีเดียวกัน ภายในทำงานด้วยเครื่องนาฬิกาแบบขึ้นลานอัตโนมัติรุ่น HUB1710 และเป็นลิมิเต็ดเอดิชั่นที่ผลิตเป็นจำนวนเพียงแค่ 88 เรือนเท่านั้น

Corum ก็ร่วมฉลองปีมังกรกับเขาด้วยเหมือนกัน นาฬิการุ่น Bubble 47 Dragon Eye ไม่ได้โชว์มังกรทั้งตัวเหมือนแบรนด์อื่นๆ แต่เลือกเอาเฉพาะบริเวณดวงตามาสร้างเป็นลวดลายบนหน้าปัดผ่านเทคนิคงานศิลป์ ยิ่งเมื่ออยู่ภายใต้แซฟไฟร์คริสตอลทรงโค้งขนาดใหญ่ตามสไตล์นาฬิกา Bubble ยิ่งดูสมจริง Corum Bubble 47 Dragon Eye มีตัวเรือนสเตนเลสสตีลขนาด 47 มม. เคลือบดำด้วยกระบวนการพีวีดี ทำงานด้วยเครื่องแบบขึ้นลานอัตโนมัติรุ่นคาลิเบอร์ CO 082 สวมใส่ด้วยสายยางสีดำ ผลิตเป็นจำนวนจำกัด 88 เรือนเท่านั้น
ปิดท้ายด้วย Franck Muller ซึ่งต่อยอดความสำเร็จกับนาฬิกาปีกระต่ายสายแฟที่ทำกับ #FR2 จากญี่ปุ่นเมื่อปีที่แล้วด้วยการร่วมงานกับศิลปินชาวญี่ปุ่น เรียวโกะ คาเนตะ ออกแบบนาฬิกา Cintrée Curvex Ryoko Kaneta Dragon Limited Edition ให้เป็นนาฬิกาปีมังกรที่มุ้งมิ้งที่สุดในวงการ แทนที่จะโชว์มังกรในสไตล์คลาสสิกที่ดูน่าเกรงขามเหมือนแบรนด์นาฬิกาอื่นๆ ก็เลือกนำเสนอมังกรในรูปแบบอานิเมะเป็นสาวน้อยน่ารักเกาะอยู่ตามตัวเลขชั่วโมงทั้ง 12 ความคาวาอิในตัวเรือนสเตนเลสสตีลขนาด 32 x 45 มม. นี้มีจำกัดเพียงแค่ 500 เรือนเท่านั้นและจะวางจำหน่ายในตลาดเอเชียแปซิฟิกเท่านั้น และทั้งหมดนี้ก็คือนาฬิการุ่นพิเศษสำหรับปีมังกรที่เราเชื่อว่าคุณจะจดจำไปอีกนาน

We present a curation of timepieces designed especially to celebrate this most enigmatic zodiac of all.

Each year, certain watch brands consistently release timepieces tied to the Chinese zodiac, marking a tradition in the industry. However, this Year of the Dragon has stirred up more excitement than usual with a plethora of dragon-themed watch releases that showcase creativity and craftsmanship. The allure of these timepieces should captivate seasoned and new collectors alike, and so, we are presenting this special curation for you.
We were first inspired to start a series of social media posts that led to the eventual writing of this article by Bovet Recital 26 Chapter Two Golden Dragon. The stunning case, measuring 46.5 mm, is crafted from red gold, while the time indication dial at the top is made of blue quartz. The subdial at 3 o’clock is dedicated to time in a second time zone. Typically, for the regular Recital 26 Chapter Two model, a moon phase indicator is clearly visible at the 9 o’clock position. However, in this instance, Bovet has allowed the golden dragon to steal the show, extending its captivating presence right down to the tourbillon at 6 o’clock.
The Ulysse Nardin Blast Tourbillon Dragon seamlessly merges an engraved rose gold dragon with the X-shaped bridge architecture of the UN-172 movement, boasting a power reserve of 3 days. The setup exudes a sense of fluidity, as if the dragon itself were gliding towards the mythical pearl above the flying tourbillon. This reflects a contemporary and dimensional take, diverging from Ulysse Nardin’s previous approach of using enamel techniques solely to create dragon motifs on flat dials.
For those who are fascinated by moon phases, the Arnold & Son Luna Magna Year of the Dragon surely stands out. The normally vacant spaces on the left and right are now occupied by a carved gold dragon. The model’s signature three-dimensional moon phase watch, measuring 12 mm in diameter, offers one half in red gold and the other in either pietersite (8 units) or onyx (8 units). It is worth emphasising that the moon phase of the Luna Magna watch is highly accurate, accumulating a deviation of only one day every 122 years, whereas conventional moon phase watches will have the same deviation in just under three years.
Tourbillon enthusiasts should be thrilled by Breguet’s Classique Double Tourbillon Dragon 5345 in platinum. An exquisitely carved golden dragon twirls around in the space between the two independently functioning tourbillons, linked by a differential for utmost precision, clutching a mother-of-pearl disc in the likeness of a pearl in one of its hands. This entire assembly is driven by the hand-winding Calibre 588N1 with a power reserve of 60 hours.
But that is not everything. Genus has taken the award-winning GNS1.2 watch, which clinched the Mechanical Exception Watch Prize at the GPHG in 2019, and given it a new twist by adorning each component of the train-like minute indication device with a sculpted dragon head and body. As such, the articulated creature can flow gracefully up and down the dial throughout an hour. It is one thing to look at the GNS1.2 Dragon on a printed page, but everything comes to life in video format which you can see on either Genus’s or our social media platforms.
Five watches into the article and we have not touched upon the subject of the calendar. Enter the Blancpain Villeret Traditional Chinese Calendar in red gold with a green enamel dial. This timepiece is built with a Chinese calendar complication, displaying particular information such as the zodiac year, the Chinese hours (of 120 minutes each), the 60-year cycle of the elements, and yin and yang, as well as a Gregorian calendar date hand for practical purposes. The rotor boasts an intricately engraved dragon motif and the words “dragon” and “wood” in Chinese, along with a unique touch of ruby. This piece is truly one of a kind.
Grand Seiko, on the other hand, has taken a more minimalist approach without prominently featuring dragons on the Red Dragon SBGH323G watch. Instead, the brand opts for a dial adorned with a three-dimensional radial pattern in a striking burgundy hue to convey auspiciousness. The case is that of the iconic 62GS design, housing the hi-beat, self-winding Caliber 9S85 with a power reserve of 55 hours. Production is limited to a run of 88 pieces.
The last four Year of the Dragon watches serve as testament to contemporary artistry, each in their own different way. First up is the Hublot Spirit of Big Bang Titanium Dragon, channelling the intricate dragon head first realised by the paper cutting technique of Chinese artist Chen Fen Wan into a five-layered dial, representing opulence, strength and wisdom. Its rubber strap is adorned with dragon scale patterns in the same colourway, using the marquetry technique. Limited to just 88 pieces, this watch is powered by the self-winding Caliber HUB1710.
Bell & Ross, known for its technicity, takes a departure from its usual pilot-inspired designs with the BR 05 Artline Dragon watch. Measuring 40 mm, it encapsulates the dragon year with laser-etched motifs spanning from the silver dial to the bezel, case, lugs and bracelet links. Upon closer look, one would notice that all three hands are designed to resemble dragon whiskers. A total of 99 units will be produced of this timepiece.
Corum joins the festivities with their Bubble 47 Dragon Eye. Instead of depicting the whole dragon, the brand chooses to artfully render the dial in the likeness of a dragon’s eye. The Bubble’s extremely pronounced dome sapphire crystal makes it look all the more realistic. The 47 mm watch case in stainless steel is given black PVD treatment and houses the self-winding Calibre CO 082. Worn on a black rubber strap, this watch is produced in a limited edition of 88 pieces only.
Lastly, following the fashion-forward Year of the Rabbit watch with #FR2 from Japan, Franck Muller partners with Japanese artist Ryoko Kaneta for the Cintrée Curvex Ryoko Kaneta Dragon Limited Edition watch. Instead of the intimidating representation of the classical dragon, this watch presents a cute anime dragon girl character in, on or around each hour numeral. The watch is limited to only 500 pieces and available exclusively in the Asia Pacific market. And with that, we conclude our showcase of Year of the Dragon watches, each leaving its mark in the world of horology.
