นักบินอวกาศแจ็ค สไวเกิร์ทเป็นผู้กล่าวประโยคอมตะ “Okay, Houston, we’ve had a problem here” เมื่อวันที่ 14 เมษายน ค.

Charlie Brown)

Snoopy Award ที่ NASA มอบให้กับ Omega

Omega Speedmaster Professional Snoopy Award

Luxuo Thailand looks back at the important chapter on the 50th anniversary of the Apollo 13 mission.

Words: Ruckdee Chotjinda

On 14 April 1970 at 03:08 GMT, 55 hours and 55 minutes into the Apollo 13 lunar mission, astronaut Jack Swigert radioed the now famous quote “Okay, Houston, we’ve had a problem here”. An explosion of an oxygen tank while en route to the moon not only made moon landing impossible but also put the lives of the three astronauts in jeopardy. Together with the best minds on the ground, a plan was devised for the spacecraft to slingshot around the moon and head back to earth, as well as to make all necessary improvisations as the crew had to make do with insufficient carbon dioxide filtration and reduced power conditions.

A crucial moment came when the astronauts had to correct their flight path for the precise re-entry angle needed. Without the use of on-board digital timers, astronaut Jack Swigert had to time the 14-second engine burn with the Omega Speedmaster watch on this wrist while astronaut James Lovell steered the craft.

During a recent interview, James Ragan, the NASA engineer who tested and qualified the Omega  Speedmaster in 1964, shared, “The watch was a critical backup. If the astronauts ever lost the capability of talking to the ground, or the capability of their digital timers, the only thing they would have to rely on would be the watches on their wrists. It needed to be there for them if they had a problem.”

Apollo 13 safely made a splashdown in the Pacific Ocean on 17 April 1970 to the relief of millions around the world. Later in the same year, on 5 October, NASA presented Omega with the Silver Snoopy Award in recognition for the Swiss watch firm’s contribution to the success of manned space missions. This is a serious award for space program employees and contractors with official criteria and nomination details published on a dedicated page on NASA web site. (As a side note, the astronaut making the award presentation to Omega was Thomas Stafford from the Apollo 10 mission whose lunar module and command module were named Snoopy and Charlie Brown, respectively.)

It was not until 2003 that Omega put the award to good commercial use in the form of the Speedmaster Professional Snoopy Award watch. A total of 5,441 units were made – the number references the length of the Apollo 13 mission of 142 hours, 54 minutes and 41 seconds. It differs from the regular Speedmaster Professional or the Moonwatch at the time by the decorative patch at the nine o’clock subdial, plus the same on the caseback.

Nobody paid much attention to the watch at the beginning – some even called it gimmicky. The 110,000 baht watch could be had with a typical discount for a while. However, things took a turn for the upside some years later with increased interest in mechanical watches and the financial speculation that inevitably followed. The Snoopy watch’s price skyrocketed to an exorbitant level before normalising at roughly 3.5 times the original retail price.

That unusual appreciation had an immediate effect on the second Snoopy watch to follow in 2015. Referred to as the Speedmaster Apollo 13 Silver Snoopy Award, this second watch marked the 45th anniversary of the Apollo 13 mission. It can be clearly distinguished from the first by the white dial which features a direct reference to the monumental 14-second period above. The smaller production amount of only 1,970 pieces and the public expectation of profitability combined to drive the resale price sky high right from the start. It was probably the easiest money one could make on a newly released 229,000 baht watch. Both watches are still available in the pre-owned market today, some in unworn conditions for the 2015 white dialled version, but at significantly inflated prices.

If you intend to buy a watch for wearing, it is more sensible to consider the standard Moonwatch which still looks virtually identical to the ones worn by the astronauts of the Apollo program. It will cost you only 173,000 baht – a great buy considering how difficult it is to think of a similarly priced chronograph with equal design legibility, mechanical pedigree and historical relevance.

Moreover, Omega has sweetened the deal since a few years ago with the new presentation box that includes a NATO strap (which you will use), an astronaut-style Velcro strap (which you will not use) and a loupe you can put on your work desk to arouse the curiosity of your colleagues. Just grab one while Omega still produces it with the traditional hand-winding movement. There is no telling how the firm will “modernise” the watch in the coming years.
