การจัดงาน Watches and Wonders Geneva ในปีนี้จำเป็นต้องอยู่ในรูปแบบดิจิตอลอีกหนึ่งปีเนื่องจากสถานการณ์ Covid-19 ที่ยังไม่สิ้นสุดลง แต่ทุกอย่างก็เป็นไปได้ด้วยความเรียบร้อย เพราะผู้จัดงานได้ตระเตรียมแพลทฟอร์มแบบออนไลน์ให้นักข่าวจากทั่วโลกเข้าไปรับชมการแถลงข่าวของแบรนด์ต่างๆ เข้าร่วมคลาสเรียนกลุ่มย่อยตามภูมิภาค ตลอดจนดาวน์โหลดไฟล์ภาพหรือข้อมูลจากมีเดียเซ็นเตอร์ที่เตรียมไว้อย่างดี และคงจะด้วยความบังเอิญที่ Watches and Wonders Geneva ปีนี้มีจำนวนแบรนด์เข้าร่วมจัดแสดงมากที่สุดเป็นประวัติการณ์ถึง 38 แบรนด์ ส่วนหนึ่งเป็นเพราะว่ามีหลายแบรนด์ที่ย้ายมาจากงาน Baselworld ทำให้มีนาฬิกาต้องพูดถึงมากรุ่นยิ่งกว่าเดิมอีก เราจึงขอคัดเพียงแค่ 12 เรือนมารวบรวมไว้ในบทความนี้ก่อน พอให้คุณได้เห็นความเป็นไปของวงการนาฬิกาด้วยความสะดวก

Rolex Oyster Perpetual Explorer
ขอเริ่มต้นที่รุ่นแรกนั่นก็คือ Rolex Oyster Perpetual Explorer ที่เป็นเซอร์ไพรส์ในเซอร์ไพรส์ เซอร์ไพรส์ที่หนึ่งคือ Rolex เลือกปรับขนาดของนาฬิการุ่นนี้ลงจาก 39 มม. เป็น 36 มม. เหมือนกับรุ่นดั้งเดิมเมื่อปี 1953 เครื่องนาฬิกาเป็นรุ่น 3230 ที่ Rolex เพิ่งเปิดตัวเมื่อปีที่แล้ว กำลังลานสำรองนานถึง 70 ชั่วโมง สายนาฬิกาเป็นสไตล์ออยส์เตอร์และมีระบบ Easylink อยู่ในบานพับเพื่อขยายให้สายยาวขึ้น 5 มม. ได้เพื่อความสบายเวลาอากาศร้อน เซอร์ไพรส์ที่สองคือการผลิตนาฬิกา Oyster Perpetual Explorer ในรูปแบบ Rolesor ด้วยอย่างที่ไม่เคยมีมาก่อน Rolesor คือศัพท์ของ Rolex เวลาที่มีการใช้วัสดุออยส์เตอร์สตีลร่วมกับทองซึ่งในกรณีนี้ก็คือเยลโลว์โกลด์ 18 กะรัต ดีไซน์โดยรวมด้วยขนาดตัวเรือนและวัสดุก็จะเป็นความสปอร์ตที่ใส่ได้ทั้งผู้ชายและผู้หญิงแบบสบายๆ เลยทีเดียว
Chopard L.U.C Quattro Spirit 25

Bulgari Octo Finissimo Perpetual Calendar

เราไม่ได้เลือก Black Bay Fifty-Eight 18K มาโชว์เพราะว่านี่เป็นนาฬิกาดำน้ำรุ่นแรกของ Tudor ที่ผลิตจากทองและมีฝาหลังแบบแซฟไฟร์คริสตอล แต่เพราะว่านาฬิการุ่นนี้มีหน้าปัดสีเขียวซึ่งกำลังมาแรงในเวลานี้ พื้นฐานการออกแบบคือ Black Bay Fifty-Eight ที่มีขนาด 39 มม. ซึ่งในครั้งนี้ผลิตจากเยลโลว์โกลด์ 18 กะรัตแทนที่จะเป็นสตีล และจับคู่กับหน้าปัดผิวด้านและวงแหวนขอบตัวเรือนอลูมิเนียมสีเขียวเข้มในโทนที่สดกว่าที่ Tudor เคยใช้ในนาฬิกา Only Watch เมื่อปี 2017 เข็มและหลักชั่วโมงก็ผลิตจากเยลโลว์โกลด์ 18 กะรัตเช่นกัน แต่เราก็ไม่คิดว่านาฬิการุ่นนี้จะขายง่ายนักในบ้านเราเพราะว่าคนไทยน่าจะชอบ Tudor ที่มีราคาเป็นมิตรและสบายกระเป๋ามากกว่า

Unlike the 2020 edition near the beginning of the pandemic, the organisers of Watches & Wonders Geneva knew well beforehand that the fair has to take place digitally once more this year. An online platform was developed specifically for journalists from around the world to attend brand announcements, join press group e-meetings and retrieve necessary materials from the media centre. And totally by coincidence, the event this year is bigger than ever with 38 participating brands, partly because it has welcomed some former exhibitors at Baselworld. That means there are even more watches to talk about, so let’s get started with our first pick of 14 pieces.
BIGGEST SURPRISES
Rolex Oyster Perpetual Explorer
We begin our executive summary of the show with the Rolex Oyster Perpetual Explorer: a surprise within a surprise. The first surprise is the Genevan firm’s decision to downsize the watch from 39 mm to 36 mm like the original timepiece from 1953. Its Calibre 3230, introduced only last year, offers a longer power reserve of 70 hours. The watch is matched to an Oyster bracelet with the Easylink extension of 5 mm for extra comfort in warmer weather. The second surprise is the availability of a yellow Rolesor version where Oystersteel meets 18 ct yellow gold. When taking size and aesthetics into consideration, the new Oyster Perpetual Explorer is without a doubt a sportive timepiece wearable by both genders.
Chopard L.U.C Quattro Spirit 25
Was there a Chopard jumping hour watch? We could not think of one, and they quickly confirmed that the L.U.C Quattro Spirit 25 is the first of such watches from them to celebrate the 25th anniversary of the Chopard Manufacture in Fleurier. This simplistic-looking timepiece houses within its 40 mm ethical rose gold case the L.U.C 98.06-L hand-winding movement with eight days of power reserve from the use of four barrels (hence, the name Quattro). If you have been following Chopard closely, you may protest that Quattro movements are good for nine days, but this is not the case as considerable power is required to advance the hour disc in an instantaneous manner. On the grand feu enamelled and domed dial, the hour window is fixed at the six o’clock position so that it will not be blocked from view by the minute hand at the top of each hour when the action takes place.

Jaeger-LeCoultre Reverso Hybris Mechanica Calibre 185
Reverso watches with two dials are common. They even made one with three dials in the past. So, for the 90th anniversary of the collection, Jaeger-LeCoultre enters a new frontier with a quadriptyque Reverso with two dials on the case and two more on the cradle. The watch, known as the Reverso Hybris Mechanica Calibre 185, packs the high-end complications and more like tourbillon, perpetual calendar, 4-digit year indication, minute repeater, moon phase as seen from the northern and the southern hemispheres, apogee and perigee, as well as height of the moon. Essentially, it can be used to predict phenomena such as the supermoons and the solar and lunar eclipses (if one knows how to read the information being presented). The white gold watch measures 51.2 x 31 x 15.15 mm and is worn on a dark blue alligator strap. It is a limited edition of 10 pieces.
Louis Vuitton Tambour Carpe Diem
La Fabrique du Temps in Geneva is the watchmaking studio and thinktank behind Louis Vuitton’s many complications. They have also produced special order watches with automata for certain private clients over the years. So to add more spectacles to the 2021 watch scene, Louis Vuitton has introduced the Tambour Carpe Diem. By pushing the shaped button on the right side of the case, the snake on the dial will move its head to reveal the jumping hour indication underneath, and point its tail to the current minute. Meanwhile, the famous monogram flower motif will appear in the left eye of the skull, and the jaw will open to reveal the hidden words “CARPE DIEM” or “seize the day”. Bulgari Octo Finissimo Perpetual Calendar
After several high-end complications, it is time for Bulgari to give the very well established Octo collection the perpetual calendar for the correct display of regardless of differing month lengths and the addition of the once-in-four-years leap day on the 29th of February. Design-wise, Bulgari needs to preserve the minimalistic aesthetics of the Octo while ensuring that the various indications are legible (and they did a great job at that). The case needs to be so slim as to break the world record as well, resulting in a titanium case which is merely 5.8 mm thick. At this same time, a platinum model is offered with a blue lacquered dial for collectors who prefer the metallic gleams on their timepieces.
Hublot Big Bang Integral Tourbillon Full Sapphire
Another engineering feat unveiled at Watches & Wonder Geneva this year is the Hublot Big Bang Integral Tourbillon Full Sapphire. A very hard material second only to diamonds, sapphire is extremely difficult to work with. The difficulties and the cost of machining sapphire parts keep the number of companies offering a sapphire watch low, and even lower if it is on a matching sapphire bracelet. This Big Bang Integral is among the few watches in the market to feature both. Its movement is also skeletonised with a tourbillon seemingly suspended in the air at the six o’clock position and a micro rotor at the 12 o’clock position, making it an important timepiece to note despite the fact that it is priced well beyond the reach of most consumers at 13,287,000 baht.
GREEN CALLINGS
Tudor Black Bay Fifty-Eight 18K
The Black Bay Fifty-Eight 18K is the first Tudor dive watch to be cased in gold and to feature a sapphire crystal caseback, but we choose to feature it here for the fact that it is one of the handful novelties with a green dial. Using the 39 mm Black Bay Fifty-Eight as the design foundation, Tudor has rightly matched the 18 ct yellow gold case to a matt dial and an anodised aluminium bezel insert in the shade of green that is much more vivid than that of a certain Only Watch by Tudor from 2017. The hands and the hour markers are also made of 18 ct yellow gold. We do not expect this watch to be a big seller in the Thai market though because Tudor is appreciated more for their excellent value for money.
Patek Philippe Nautilus Ref. 5711
A dream sports watch for many, the Nautilus has developed a cult following so intense that acquiring one has been nearly impossible in recent years. Even so, a decision was announced earlier this year by Patek Philippe to discontinue the famous Ref. 5711 with blue dial, revealing only that a replacement will soon be introduced. While we cannot ascertain at this time if the Ref. 5711 with olive green dial is “that” replacement or if something else will follow, the watch communities are already discussing the green-dialled novelty – a first for the Nautilus family. While green is not a typical watch dial colour in modern contemporary times, the palette is quickly and firmly crossing the threshold from being a trend to being a mainstay.
SPLENDID CUSHIONS
Vacheron Constantin Historiques American 1921
For the centennial of this icon, Vacheron Constantin is producing two Historiques American 1921 white gold watches in 40 mm size on a dark brown calf leather strap and, for ladies, in 36.5 mm size on a burgundy calf leather strap – both powered by the hand-winding 4400 AS calibre with 65-hour power reserve. It is great to see this living legend refreshed once more while maintaining its characteristic angular dial which faces the eyes squarely if worn on the left wrist when the hand is on the steering wheel. Also true to the original is the positioning of the crown at the upper right corner of the case. The Historiques American 1921 is always a great idea for collectors who cherish vintage designs, particularly the storied ‘20s. The fact that it is exactly the 100th anniversary makes the watch all the more tempting.
Hermès H08
Hermès is playful as ever, but never without deliberation behind all decisions made. After having made firm progress with the dressier men’s watches in the Arceau and Slim d’ Hermès collections, it is time for the maison to repropose their offer where sportive watches are concerned. The result of their deliberation is the Hermès H08: a cushion-shaped watch for the modern man and his active lifestyle. The H08 features a universally wearable 39 x 39 mm case in titanium, with and without black DLC coating. Thanks to the screw-down crown, the watch is water resistant to 100 metres and ever ready to jump into action with its wearer when worn on either the titanium bracelet, black or orange rubber strap, or, black or blue webbing strap. The H08 is powered by the H1837 movement, produced exclusively for Hermès.

Cartier Tank Must
At first glance, one can mistake the Tank Must for yet another cosmetic refresh of the Tank collection. But it is much more than meet the eyes for the 2021 Tank Must. First of all, the watch is powered by the SolarBeat movement which harnesses energy from the sunlight. You cannot see the typical solar cells because they are cleverly hidden underneath the classical dial where the Roman numerals are perforated to allow light through. Secondly, the strap which looks quite similar to a calfskin strap is in fact animal-free. It is made of plants, mainly apples, to be more merciful and environment-friendly where carbon emission is concerned. Four Cartier Tank Must models are available with the SolarBeat movement and the plant-based strap: the large model with either black or light blue strap and the small model with either black or light green strap.
Ulysse Nardin UFO
Watch collectors are always eager to see bigger and badder toys. Their subconscious wishes usually come true when the watch brands come up with the same dreams and transform their imaginations into actual products. In this particular case, we have the UFO or the Unidentified Floating Object which is conceptualised by Ulysse Nardin in Le Locle and executed by famed clockmaker L’Epée in Delemont. Weighing 7.2 kilograms, the UFO is capable of swinging up to 60 degrees from the axis because of the balance provided by the blue, half-spherical aluminium base and the hidden tungsten mass. Mechanically, the futuristic clock display time in three zones on separate dials with six barrels providing a power reserve of one year. Only 75 units of the UFO will be produced to mark the 175th anniversary of the company.
