วงการนาฬิกาของเรานี้มีแบรนด์มากมายหลากสไตล์ซึ่งแต่ละแบรนด์นั้นก็มีบุคลิกเป็นของตนเอง แต่เมื่อพูดถึง Van Cleef & Arpels แล้วทุกคนที่อยู่ในแวดวงนี้มานานก็จะเห็นพ้องต้องกันว่านี่คือแบรนด์ที่ไม่มีใครเหมือนจริงๆ เพราะผลงานแต่ละชิ้นของ Van Cleef & Arpels นั้นก้าวไกลเกินกว่ากรอบปกติของอุตสาหกรรมนาฬิกาไปมาก

Lady Arpels Pont des Amoureux รุ่นนี้เป็นส่วนหนึ่งของคอลเลคชั่น Poetic Complications ซึ่งถือกำเนิดขึ้นเมื่อ 4 ปีก่อนหน้าในปี ค.ศ. 2006 เนื่องในโอกาสครบรอบหนึ่งศตวรรษของการก่อตั้งแบรนด์ Van Cleef & Arpels เมื่อครั้งที่คุณอัลเฟรด แวน คลีฟ แต่งงานกับคุณเอสแตล อาร์แปลส์ ตั้งแต่นั้นมาคอลเลคชั่น Poetic Complications ภายใต้ปรัชญา Poetry of Time ก็ส่งให้ Van Cleef & Arpels มีชื่อเสียงเป็นที่ยกย่องมากขึ้นเรื่อยๆ ในโลกนาฬิกาด้วยเรือนเวลาและออโตมาตอนดีไซน์ต่างๆ ที่แตกต่างจากทุกสิ่งที่แบรนด์อื่นๆ ในวงการทำโดยสิ้นเชิง

สำหรับปี ค.ศ. 2024 นี้ Van Cleef & Arpels ยังคงใช้งาน Watches and Wonders Geneva เป็นสถานที่เปิดตัวผลิตภัณฑ์รุ่นใหม่ๆ เหมือนเช่นเคย นาฬิกา 2 รุ่นแรกมาจากคอลเลคชั่น Extraordinary Dials ซึ่งเน้นเรื่องการใช้เทคนิคงานศิลป์และอัญมณีหลากสีในการเปลี่ยนหน้าปัดทรงกลมให้กลายเป็นเหมือนภาพวาดสามมิติที่มีชีวิตซึ่งสามารถบอกเล่าเรื่องราวตามชื่อรุ่นได้อย่างวิจิตรบรรจง ได้แก่ Lady Arpels Jour Enchanté และ Lady Arpels Nuit Enchantée
Lady Arpels Jour Enchanté เป็นฉากยามเช้าที่เห็นดวงอาทิตย์ที่เจิดจ้าด้วยสเปสซาไทท์ แซฟไฟร์สีและเพชรแล้วมีการทอแสงทอดยาวด้วยชิ้นส่วนที่ผลิตจากเยลโลว์โกลด์ นางฟ้าไวท์โกลด์ทางด้านซ้ายกำลังบินเก็บดอกไม้ไปตามประสา สำหรับดอกไม้สีม่วงที่เห็นอยู่ทางด้านล่างนั้นสร้างขึ้นมาด้วยเทคนิคฟาซอนเน่เอนาเมลใหม่ของ Van Cleef & Arpels ซึ่งประสบความสำเร็จในการนำเอนาเมลมาขึ้นรูปด้วยมือจนดูมีมิติแล้วจึงประดับแซฟไฟร์สีเหลืองตรงกลาง อีกหนึ่งเทคนิคใหม่ที่ Van Cleef & Arpels ใช้ในนาฬิการุ่นนี้ก็คือการประดับเพชรลงในเนื้อพลิคอาจูร์เอนาเมลใสโดยตรงโดยไม่มีชิ้นส่วนที่เป็นโลหะช่วยบังคับ เราจะเห็นเทคนิคดังกล่าวได้ในใบไม้สีเขียวอ่อนและสีฟ้าอ่อนที่อยู่เหนือและใต้นางฟ้า รวมระยะเวลาการพัฒนาเทคนิคที่ใช้บนหน้าปัดนาฬิการุ่นนี้ 2 ปีและหน้าปัดแต่ละชิ้นจะต้องใช้เวลาในการประดิษฐ์นานถึง 180 ชั่วโมง
ทางด้าน Lady Arpels Nuit Enchantée นั้นก็เป็นการเผยให้เห็นอิริยาบถในมุมส่วนตัวของนางฟ้าของเราในยามค่ำคืน หน้าปัดของนาฬิการุ่นนี้ได้รับการเนรมิตให้ดูเหมือนถ้ำของนางฟ้าด้วยการใช้แซฟไฟร์สีชมพูและสีม่วง เว้นว่างพื้นที่บริเวณตำแหน่ง 10 นาฬิกาเพื่อวาดภาพดวงจันทร์และดวงดาวบนท้องฟ้ายามค่ำคืนด้วยเทคนิคกริซายล์เอนาเมล ส่วนนางฟ้าไวท์โกลด์ของเรานั้นก็หลับใหลอยู่บนพื้นที่ปูด้วยดอกไม้ฟาซอนเน่เอนาเมลสีม่วงประดับแซฟไฟร์สีเหลืองที่ทอดยาวไปจนถึงหน้าปัดบอกเวลาที่ทำจากร็อคคริสตอลและประดับหลักชั่วโมงโรสโกลด์เพื่อความชัดเจน นาฬิกาทั้งสองรุ่นนี้ทำงานด้วยเครื่องนาฬิกาจักรกลแบบไขลานทั้งคู่
มาต่อกันที่คอลเลคชั่น Poetic Complications ซึ่งเน้นเรื่องการใช้เทคนิคการประดิษฐ์นาฬิกาจักรกลเพื่อตอบโจทย์ในการบอกเล่าเรื่องราวที่เป็นคอนเซปท์สำคัญของนาฬิกาอย่างที่กล่าวถึงไปข้างต้น นาฬิการุ่นใหม่ 2 รุ่นจาก 3 รุ่นในคอลเลคชั่นนี้ยังคงเล่นธีมกลางวันและกลางคืนอย่างต่อเนื่อง ได้แก่ Lady Arpels Jour Nuit ตัวเรือนไวท์โกลด์ขนาด 38 มม. และ Lady Jour Nuit ตัวเรือนไวท์โกลด์ขนาด 33 มม.
ฟังก์ชั่นหลักของนาฬิกาทั้งสองรุ่นนี้ก็คือการบอกว่าเวลานี้เป็นช่วงกลางวันหรือกลางคืนด้วยการใช้จานหมุนขนาดใหญ่ที่ผลิตจากแก้วอเวนจูรีนจากมูราโนที่จะหมุนครบหนึ่งรอบในเวลา 24 ชั่วโมง บนจานหมุนนี้จะมีสัญลักษณ์รูปดวงอาทิตย์และดวงจันทร์ที่ผลัดกันขึ้นมาทำหน้าที่จากทางด้านหลังฉากที่เป็นแผ่นเปลือกหอยมุกแกะสลัก ลวดลายการแกะสลักแผ่นเปลือกหอยมุกของนาฬิกาทั้งสองรุ่นนี้มีรายละเอียดที่ต่างกัน และแผ่นเปลือกหอยมุกของรุ่นเล็กจะมีการลงสีเป็นสีน้ำเงินด้วย
นาฬิกา Poetic Complications รุ่นที่สามนั้นถือว่าเป็นไฮไลท์ของ Van Cleef & Arpels ในปีนี้ และก็เป็นนาฬิกาที่ได้ขึ้นปก WOW Thailand ฉบับกันยายนนี้ด้วย นั่นก็คือ Lady Arpels Brise d’Été ซึ่งแปลเป็นภาษาอังกฤษแบบตรงตัวได้ว่า “summer breeze” เมื่อมองเผินๆ ก็จะดูเหมือนกับนาฬิกาธีมธรรมชาติตามปกติของ Van Cleef & Arpels และมีผีเสื้อไวท์โกลด์กับผีเสื้อเยลโลว์โกลด์ผลัดกันทำหน้าที่บอกชั่วโมงและนาทีโดยสังเขป แต่ขึ้นชื่อว่าเป็น Van Cleef & Arpels ก็ย่อมไม่มีอะไรธรรมดาอยู่แล้ว
เพียงคุณกดปุ่มบริเวณ 8 นาฬิกาของตัวเรือนไวท์โกลด์ขนาด 38 มม. โมดูลออโตมาตอนของนาฬิการุ่นนี้ก็จะทำงานทันทีโดยส่งให้ผีเสื้อทั้งสองบินรอบหน้าปัดจนครบหนึ่งรอบในเวลา 10 วินาทีก่อนที่จะมาหยุดที่ตำแหน่งเวลาที่ถูกต้องอีกครั้ง ไม่เพียงเท่านั้น ดอกโคโรลล่าทั้งสามที่อยู่บนก้านดอกไม้สีเขียวก็จะเคลื่อนไหวไปมาราวกับกำลังลู่ลมเหมือนอยู่ในธรรมชาติจริงๆ เฉดสีฟ้าอาซูร์ของดอกโคโรลล่านั้นเกิดจากเทคนิควาโลนเนเอเนเมล และเกสรดอกไม้สีเหลืองนั้นก็คือสเปสซาไทท์ที่ประดับไว้ แล้วยังมีการใช้เทคนิคมิเนเจอร์เอนาเมลเพนท์ติ้งบนพื้นหน้าปัดเปลือกหอยมุกเพิ่มเติมเพื่อความสมบูรณ์แบบของฉากฤดูร้อนยามเช้าฉากนี้
ผลงานชิ้นสุดท้ายที่เราจะเขียนถถึงก็คือ ออโตมาตอนจักรกลอันน่าทึ่งในชื่อ Apparition des Baies จากคอลเลคชั่น Extraordinary Objects ซึ่ง Van Cleef & Arpels ได้สาธิตการทำงานให้แขกผู้มาเยือนในงาน Watches and Wonders Geneva ได้ชมกันอย่างใกล้ชิด สิ่งประดิษฐ์ชิ้นนี้มีขนาดสูงราว 27 ซม. และกว้างราว 21.5 ซม. โดยพื้นฐานแล้ว Apparition des Baies เป็นนาฬิกาตั้งโต๊ะกำลังลานสำรอง 8 วันแต่ว่านาฬิกาเรือนนี้ไม่ได้ทำหน้าที่เพียงบอกเวลาเท่านั้น เมื่อสั่งให้เครื่องทำงาน ใบไม้โรสโกลด์เคลือบแลคเกอร์สีเขียวที่เห็นทางด้านบนจะค่อยๆ เปิดออกแล้วหันเรียงตัวเป็นแนวนอนเพื่อเผยให้เห็นนกไวท์โกลด์ประดับแซฟไฟร์สีน้ำเงินตัวน้อยที่ซ่อนอยู่ข้างในกับลูกแบรี่จำนวนหนึ่งที่เป็นสปิเนลสีแดง และนกตัวนี้ก็จะกระพือปีกเพื่อบินขึ้นลงและหมุนไปมาเป็นจังหวะดูสมจริง
เมื่อจบการแสดงประกอบเสียงดนตรีนี้แล้ว ใบไม้ทั้งหมดจะค่อยๆ หมุนเอียงกลับขึ้นในแนวตั้งแล้วหุบลงมาครอบปิดบังตัวนกเหมือนตอนเริ่มต้นอีกครั้งหนึ่ง ทำให้เราไม่เห็นนกน้อยและลูกแบรี่ของเขาจนกว่าจะถึงเวลาโชว์ครั้งต่อไป กลไกสุดซับซ้อนที่ทำหน้าที่ขยับชิ้นส่วนทั้งหมดนี้ถูกซ่อนอยู่ข้างในตัวเรือนซึ่งผลิตจากดัลเมเชียนแจสเปอร์ และออโตมาตอน Apparition des Baies ชิ้นนี้ก็จะมีการผลิตเพียงแค่ชิ้นเดียวในโลก จึงจะมีบุคคลเพียงคนเดียว (หรือครอบครัวเดียว) ในโลกเท่านั้นที่จะได้ครอบครอง
โดยรวมแล้วถือว่านี่เป็นอีกปีหนึ่งที่ Van Cleef & Arpels มาแบบท็อปฟอร์มมากๆ เพราะทางแบรนด์สามารถบอกเล่าเรื่องราวในจินตนาการได้ด้วยการผสมผสานงานฝีมือเชิงศิลป์และความเชี่ยวชาญทางด้านกลไกได้อย่างลงตัว แต่กว่าจะมาถึงจุดนี้ได้ Van Cleef & Arpels ก็ต้องใช้เวลานานนับปีหรือหลายปีในการพัฒนาผลงานบางชิ้น เพราะนอกจากจะต้องมีการวางแผนแล้วยังต้องมีการทดลองผลิตและปรับแต่งด้วยความร่วมมือของแผนกต่างๆ ที่เกี่ยวข้องจนกว่าทุกสิ่งจะลงตัวแบบสมบูรณ์แบบ และเราต้องไม่ลืมด้วยว่านาฬิกาหรือออโตมาตอนของ Van Cleef & Arpels จะต้องมีการเคลื่อนไหวที่อ่อนช้อย แม้จะเป็นจักรกลแต่ก็ไม่ดูแข็งเป็นหุ่นยนต์ เพราะความเป็นธรรมชาติสมจริงนั้นเองคือปัจจัยที่จะสะกดให้ผู้คนเกิดความหลงใหลจนกลายเป็นคุณลูกค้าที่ได้ครอบครอง จนทำให้ญาติมิตรเพื่อนฝูงคนใกล้ชิดของตนะได้ร่วมชื่นชมความพิเศษของสิ่งสร้างเหล่านี้ด้วย

From wristwatches to automata, the maison’s vivid dreams are once again realised to the wonder of the watch collecting world.

In the vast and exceptional world of watchmaking, one maison easily stands out for their unique ability to amaze connoisseurs time and again with the most imaginative creations, transcending the domain of conventional horology. That maison is Van Cleef & Arpels, headquartered in Paris and with a full-fledged watch manufacture in Geneva.
Personally, this writer first discovered and became infatuated with Van Cleef & Arpels when the brand introduced the Lady Arpels Pont des Amoureux watch to the world in 2010. While most complicated watches in the market present various information through tiny hands and multiple subdials, this unorthodox timepiece pitches a love story between a lady and a gentleman who meet at midnight (and midday) in the middle of a Parisian bridge. The two figures are, in fact, retrograde hands that indicate the hour and the minute accordingly, and the whole dial sets the stage for this romantic choreography. It goes beyond time – it tells a story, and the way I have looked at all watches has changed ever since.
The Lady Arpels Pont des Amoureux watch belongs to the Poetic Complications collection. This unique family of watches was established four years prior in 2006, to mark the centenary of the maison which was founded through the marriage of Alfred Van Cleef and Estelle Arpels. Since then, the Poetic Complications collection and the encompassing Poetry of Time philosophy have put the maison on a pedestal through multiple wristwatches and automatons that are unlike anything in the market.
They combine specially developed mechanics with various métiers d’arts to convey and enrich stories from a group of universes like love, as in the case of the aforementioned Lady Arpels Pont des Amoureux, or astronomy, as in the Midnight Planétarium or the Zodiaque Lumineux watches. Figures relating to the earlier decades of Van Cleef & Arpels as a jeweller, like the ballerina and the fairy, often serve as muses for the design and development of contemporary wristwatches as well. And then there is the enchanted nature: a gentle yet powerful theme that provides the largest canvas for Van Cleef & Arpels.
For 2024, five wristwatches and one automaton were presented at Watches and Wonders Geneva. The first two belong to the Extraordinary Dials collection where métiers d’arts and gemstones are employed to create a three dimensional version of a circular painting, for lack of a better comparison. They include the Lady Arpels Jour Enchanté and the Lady Arpels Nuit Enchantée watches.
The Lady Arpels Jour Enchanté watch depicts an early morning scene with a radiant sun decorated by spessartites garnets, coloured sapphires, diamonds and long rays of yellow gold. The white gold fairy on the left goes about her chore of picking hand-sculpted purple enamel flowers that are realised with the new façonné enamel technique, developed by Van Cleef & Arpels, and set with yellow sapphires. Showcasing another new technique on this watch, diamonds are set directly into the translucent plique-à-jour without the help of metal components. You can see this in the light green and light blue leaves above and below the fairy. Two years went into the development of this dial, which required 180 hours to assemble.
Meanwhile, the Lady Arpels Nuit Enchantée watch affords a glimpse into the life of our dear fairy at night. On the dial, pink and purple sapphires form the interior of her cave, with a small opening around the 10 o’clock position where the grisaille enamel technique is used to render the moon and stars on a night sky. Our white gold fairy rests under the moonglow, on a bed of yellow sapphire-set purple façonné enamel flowers situated just below the rock crystal dial with rose gold hour markers. A hand-winding, mechanical movement powers both the Lady Arpels Jour Enchanté and the Lady Arpels Nuit Enchantée watches.
Moving on to the Poetic Complications collection, where mechanical watchmaking techniques are used in storytelling, two of the three novelties continue with the rhythms of day and night: the Lady Arpels Jour Nuit in a 38 mm white gold case and the Lady Jour Nuit in a 33 mm white gold case. A large disc of Murano aventurine glass completes one revolution around the watch in 24 hours, indicating the day and the night with appropriately stylistic representations. To complete the setup, guilloché engraved mother-of-pearl covers the lower half of the dial, masking the sun or the moon when it is time for the other to rise. Engraving patterns differ on the mother-of-pearl components of these two timepieces, and that of the smaller watch is also painted blue.
The third Poetic Complications watch is, without a doubt, the highlight for Van Cleef & Arpels this year. The cover watch for this September quarterly print issue of WOW Thailand, it is aptly named the Lady Arpels Brise d’Été, literally the “summer breeze”. From the initial look, it may seem like a typical, nature-themed Van Cleef & Arpels. Two butterflies in white or yellow gold take turns to indicate the hour and the approximate minutes across a 180 degrees arch, but nothing is ever “typical” at this maison.
The push of a button at the eight o’clock position of the 38 mm white gold case activates the automaton module of the watch, sending the two butterflies on a 10-second flight across the dial before stopping at the correct time. While this happens, the three corolla flowers on green stems gently sway to the tune of an imaginary breeze – their realistic azure shades are realised by the vallonné enamel technique, and their pistils are represented by spessartite garnet. A miniature enamel painting on a mother-of-pearl background completes this summer morning scene.
Lastly, Van Cleef & Arpels demonstrated the magical artistry of the Apparition des Baies automaton from the Extraordinary Objects collection for the collective viewing pleasure of every visitor at Watches and Wonders Geneva. Measuring approximately 27 cm in height and around 21.5 cm in width, this wondrous machine is a clock with eight days of power reserve that does much more than telling the time. Once the automaton is activated, the rose gold leaves with a green lacquered finish open up and rotate into the horizontal position, revealing the blue sapphire-set white gold bird on top of some red spinel berries. This bird goes up and down and turns around on its own axis, flapping its wings every now and then in a lifelike motion.
At the end of the repertoire, which is accompanied by a melodic tune, the leaves slowly rotate up and fold back into the closing position, hiding the bird and its berries until the next on-demand performance. The sophisticated mechanisms responsible for all these motions are perfectly hidden within the dalmatian jasper structure of the automaton. The Apparition des Baies marks a unique piece and only one person (or family) in the world will get to own it.
All in all, it is clear that this is another strong year for Van Cleef & Arpels. These intricate works of storytelling through a combination of artistic and mechanical expertise can never be created on a whim. They require years of planning and testing among relevant departments until perfection is achieved. You have to also appreciate that any animation on a Van Cleef & Arpels watch or automaton must never be robotic – it has to be as natural and fluid as mechanically possible in order to capture the heart and soul of the discerning clientele and the privileged few around them who will get to see these products in a real-world setting.
