The maison presents two opuses of masterful craftsmanship.

If you follow the work of luxury jeweler Van Cleef & Arpels, you will already be familiar with the graceful ballet dancers adorning the maison’s iconic timepieces. Over the years, a succession of ballerinas have mesmerized watch lovers with their dance across the dials of high jewelry watches adorned with dazzling gems and just as dazzling decorations by master craftsmen.
The relationship between Van Cleef & Arpels and the world of ballet began in 1920s Paris, when the house’s founder, Louis Arpels became a frequent visitor to the Opéra Garnier. He passed on his passion for ballet to his nephew, Claude, a passion that subsequently led to the creation of the first ballet clip in 1944. More works bearing the motif followed and the ballet clips soon became Van Cleef & Arpels’ signature pieces. Later, the design of a beautiful ballerina spinning magic in a tutu bedecked with precious gems acquired a new stage – on the dials of Van Cleef & Arpels timepieces, including the Lady Arpels Ballerines Musicales and the Lady Arpels Ballerine Enchantée watch inspired by the legendary prima ballerina Anna Pavlova.
Fast forward to 2024, and ballet once again provided inspiration for the creation of two exquisite timepieces. The first, Lady Arpels Casse-Noissette beautifully portrays a winter fairytale using 70 different colors, finishes and enameling techniques.
The timepiece features a 41 mm white gold case with a white gold bezel set with round diamonds. The dial displays a complex work of volume and depth, a symphony of precious and ornamental stones including diamonds, colored sapphires, blue tourmalines, onyx, sugilite and lapis lazuli. New techniques pioneered by the maison were used to shape the enamel beads dotting the dial. The wondrous feat of craftsmanship continues on the white gold case back, where a hand-engraved winter landscape completes this magical tale.
The second timepiece, the Lady Arpels Belle au Bois Dormant is inspired by the ballet of the same name. Spectacular in a 41mm rose gold case, the watch was created using a combination of techniques including champleve enameling, used to render the lifelike spirals of pink ribbons, and plique-à-jour enameling, used to execute the sunray pattern of the stage on which the two figures are jubilantly united. Van Cleef & Arpels’ enameling mastery can also be seen in the lilacs rendered with the matte enameling technique called vallonné. Rubies, purple and yellow sapphires, diamonds, garnets and emeralds add sparkle and life to the backdrop that completes that tableau at the heart of this captivating work by Van Cleef & Arpels.
