ย้อนชมผลงานสร้างสรรค์ของ Van Cleef & Arpels ที่ได้รับรางวัลระดับโลกที่ได้ชื่อว่าเป็น ‘ออสการ์’ แห่งวงการนาฬิกา

บนโลกใบนี้ หากจะมีเมืองใดที่เรียกได้ว่าเป็นศูนย์กลางแห่งการผลิตนาฬิกาชั้นสูงที่แท้จริง ก็คงจะหนีไม่พ้นเจนีวา เป็นแน่แท้ เมืองอันเงียบสงบริมทะเลสาบในสวิตเซอร์แลนด์แห่งนี้คือที่ตั้งของโรงงานแบรนด์นาฬิการะดับโลกมากมาย และเป็นที่ทำงานของช่างฝีมือและดีไซเนอร์จำนวนมาก ซึ่งทางเมืองเจนีวาเองก็มีการสนับสนุนอุตสาหกรรมนี้มาอย่างแข็งขันโดยตลอด โดยมีทั้งการสร้างตราสัญลักษณ์ Poinçon de Genève ในปีค.ศ. 1886 เพื่อเป็นเครื่องหมายแสดงถึงความเป็นเลิศด้านการผลิตนาฬิกาชั้นสูง รวมถึงการรับหน้าที่ดูแลมูลนิธิ Grand Prix d’Horlogerie de Genève (GPHG) ที่ก่อตั้งตั้งแต่ปี ค.ศ. 2001 เพื่อมอบรางวัลให้แก่ผลงานนาฬิกาที่โดดเด่นและเพื่อสนับสนุนศิลปะแห่งการผลิตนาฬิกาด้วย ในช่วงเดือนพฤศจิกายนของทุกๆ ปี ทางมูลนิธิจะประกาศรายชื่อแบรนด์ที่ได้รับรางวัลสาขาต่างๆ รวมแล้วกว่า 20 รางวัล ซึ่งสำหรับแบรนด์นาฬิกาชั้นสูงแล้ว รางวัลนี้ถือเป็นรางวัลที่สูงส่งและมีคุณค่า จนเรียกได้ว่าเป็นเหมือนออสการ์แห่งวงการนาฬิกาเลยทีเดียว
และหนึ่งในขาประจำที่กวาดรางวัลจากเวทีนี้มาถึง 3 ปีซ้อนตั้งแต่ปี ค.ศ. 2020 เป็นต้นมาก็คือแบรนด์ Van Cleef & Arpels โดยในปี ค.ศ. 2020 ทางแบรนด์ได้รับรางวัลถึง 2 สาขา นั่นคือ Jewelry Watch จากนาฬิกา Frivole Secrète นาฬิกาแบบซีเคร็ทวอทช์ที่มีหน้าปัดฝังเพชรเรียงแถวจิกไข่ปลาซ่อนอยู่ใต้ตัวเรือนที่ออกแบบเป็นรูปกลีบดอกไม้ทองคำที่ขัดผิวขึ้นเงาราวกับกระจก รวมถึงสาขา Artistic Crafts Watch จากนาฬิกา Lady Arpels Soleil Féerique จากคอลเลคชั่น Extraordinary Dials โดยหน้าปัดสร้างสรรค์เป็นลายแสงอาทิตย์ที่กำลังสาดส่องที่ผสมผสานเทคนิคลงยา พลิคอาจูร์เอนาเมลกับวัสดุล้ำค่าอย่างทองคำ มาเธอร์ออฟเพิร์ลสีขาว ลาพิส ลาซูลีและออนิกซ์ พร้อมนางฟ้าแสนสง่างามที่ทำจากทองคำขัดเงาวางตัวอยู่ด้านบนราวกำลังลอยอยู่ในอากาศ ส่วนหลังตัวเรือนนั้นอวดลายสลักเป็นเส้นรัศมีของดวงอาทิตย์
ต่อมาในปี ค.ศ. 2021 Van Cleef & Arpels ก็ได้รับรางวัลจากเวทีอันทรงเกียรตินี้อีกครั้ง ในสาขา Ladies’ Complication ที่เป็นรางวัลที่มอบให้กับนาฬิกาสำหรับผู้หญิงที่มีความโดดเด่นทั้งในด้านการสร้างสรรค์กลไกและความซับซ้อน โดยนาฬิกาชนะรางวัลนี้ก็คือนาฬิกา Lady Féerie ที่สะท้อนถึงทักษะทั้งในด้านการสร้างสรรค์นาฬิกาและงานเครื่องประดับได้อย่างสวยงาม โดยหน้าปัดสีฟ้าไล่เฉดลายกิโยเช่ประดับด้วยมาเธอร์ออฟเพิร์ล ส่วนปีกของนางฟ้าที่อยู่ในโทนสีเดียวกันนั้นเป็นการผสมผสานเทคนิคพลิคอาจูร์เอนาเมลกับแบบกริซายย์ ซึ่งนี่นับเป็นครั้งแรกที่แบรนด์ใช้เทคนิคทั้งสองเทคนิคนี้ด้วยกันบนลวดลายหนึ่งเดียว ส่วนด้านหลังตัวเรือนนั้นเผยให้เห็นถึงโรเตอร์ที่สลักเป็นรูปพระจันทร์เต็มดวงที่ส่องแสงอยู่กลางท้องฟ้าที่เต็มไปด้วยเมฆและดวงดาว นาฬิการุ่นนี้มาพร้อมกับกลไกไขลานอัตโนมัติ พร้อมระบบบอกเวลาแบบรีโทรเกรดและจัมปิ้งอาวร์ โดยทั้งหมดบรรจุอยู่ในตัวเรือนที่บางเพียง 33 ม.ม. เท่านั้น
ปี ค.ศ. 2022 Van Cleef & Arpels ก็ได้รับรางวัล GPHG ในสาขา Innovation จากนาฬิกา Lady Arpels Heures Florales Cerisier ที่โดดเด่นเรื่องดีไซน์ การใช้อัญมณีล้ำค่าและทักษะฝีมือทางเชิงช่างแบบดั้งเดิม นาฬิการุ่นนี้ช่วยเติมสีสันให้การบอกเวลาดูงดงามราวกับการเดินเล่นในสวน โดยได้แรงบันดาลใจจากการออกแบบนาฬิกาดอกไม้หรือ Horologium Florae ของ Carl von Linné นักพฤกษศาสตร์ชาวสวีดิช ที่ปรากฏในหนังสือ Phisosophia Botanica ในปี 1751 ที่ให้ดอกไม้เป็นเครื่องบอกเวลา โดยดอกไม้ทั้ง 12 ดอกบนหน้าปัดนาฬิกาจะผลัดกันหุบและบานเพื่อบอกเวลาหลักชั่วโมง ส่วนหลักนาทีนั้นใช้ระบบรีโทรเกรดที่อยู่ข้างๆ กรอบตัวเรือน
และอีกสาขาที่ได้รับในปีเดียวกันก็คือสาขา Mechanical Clock จากนาฬิกา Fontaine aux Oiseaux นาฬิกาตั้งโต๊ะหุ่นกลแสนสวยที่ผนวกงานกลจักรเคลื่อนไหวกับการแสดงเวลาแบบรีโทรเกรด โดยขนนกที่อยู่ที่ฐานของนาฬิกาจะเคลื่อนไหวเพื่อบอกเวลา เมื่อเคลื่อนตัวไปถึง 12 นาฬิกา ขนนกก็จะเคลื่อนตัวกลับไปที่จุดเริ่มต้นเพื่อบอกเวลาครึ่งหลังของวัน เมื่อกดให้กลไกทำงาน น้ำในบ่อก็จะเริ่มกระเพื่อม ดอกบัวก็จะเริ่มบาน และแมลงปอก็จะขยับปีก จากนั้นนกสองตัวที่เกาะอยู่ที่ขอบอ่าางก็จะเริ่มส่งเสียงและค่อนๆ เคลื่อนตัวเข้าหากัน ผลงานที่ทั้งสวยงามและซับซ้อนนี้เป็นการทำงานร่วมกันระหว่าง Van Cleef & Arpels และกลุ่มช่างฝีมือทั้งในฝรั่งเศสและสวิตเซอร์แลนด์ ทั้งกลุ่ม Meilleur Ouvrier de France (Best French Craftsmen) และ Entreprise du Patrimoine Vivant (Living Heritage Company) โดยใช้เวลาสร้างสรรค์รวมแล้วถึง 25,200 ชั่วโมงเลยทีเดียว

If any city on earth deserves the title “the center of fine watchmaking”, it is Geneva. This quiet Swiss lakeside city – home to many world-class watch manufacturers and the workplace of numerous artisans and designers – has always been staunchly supportive of the watchmaking industry. In 1886 the city introduced the Poinçon de Genève, now one of the ultimate standards of fine watchmaking. It also runs the foundation of the Grand Prix d’Horlogerie de Genève (GPHG), created in 2001 to honor timepiece excellence and promote the art of watchmaking. Every year in November, the foundation announces a list of winners in 20 different categories. Over time, the GPHG has become such a prestigious and coveted award for fine watchmakers that it is nicknamed the Oscar of Watchmaking.
A regular contender on the GPHG stage is Van Cleef and Arpels, whose recent track record features five wins in three consecutive years. In 2020 it captured not one but two prizes. The Frivole Secrète, a secret watch with a diamond-paved dial concealed within a flower-shaped mirror-polished case, took home the Jewelry Watch prize. The year’s Artistic Crafts Watch honor, meanwhile, went to the Lady Arpels Soleil Féerique. This latter timepiece showcases the maison’s mastery of the art of plique-à-jour enameling and wizardry with materials with an extraordinary dial of opaque enamel on a background of gold, white mother-of-pearl, lapis lazuli and onyx, and a graceful fairy in mirror-polished gold floating in the foreground. Completing the celestial theme, the back of the case is engraved with a sunray pattern.
The following year the Van Cleefs & Arpels Lady Féerie was awarded the Ladies’ Complication prize. Lauded for its remarkable mechanical creativity and complexity, the timepiece captivates with a blue guilloché mother-of-pearl dial. The delicate wings of the fairy are crafted from a combination of plique-à-jour and grisaille enamel, the first time the maison used these two techniques together in a single motif. On the back of the watch, the visible oscillating weight is engraved with a full moon in a sky adorned with clouds and stars. The watch is fitted with a mechanical winding movement with a retrograde minute display and jumping hours in a slim 33 mm case.
In 2022, Van Cleef & Arpels won the Innovation Prize for its Lady Arpels Heures Florales Cerisier, whose exceptional design is complimented by superb jewelry and traditional craftsmanships. Reading the time on this extraordinary watch evokes the pleasure of a leisurely garden stroll, thanks to a design inspired by the Swedish botanist Carl von Linne’s flower clock concept (Horologium Florae) described in his 1751 book Philosophia Botanica. The 12 flowers on the dial open and close in turn to tell the hour, while the minutes are visible in a window on the side of the case.
That same year Van Cleef & Arpels also triumphed in the Mechanical Clock category for the Fontaine aux Oiseaux, which combines on-demand animation with a retrograde time display. On the side of the base, a feather moves progressively along the time scale; once it reaches 12 o’clock, it returns to its point of departure to repeat its journey for the next half-day. When activated, the automaton comes to life: water in the basin starts to ripple, a water lily slowly blooms, while a dragonfly rises in the air mesmerizingly beating its wings, and the birds at the edge of the basin stir into action, chirping as they move closer together. A collaboration between Van Cleef & Arpels and the accomplished craftsmen of the Meilleur Ouvrier de France (Best French Craftsmen) and the Swiss Entreprise du Patrimoine Vivant (Living Heritage Company), this enchanting and wonderfully complex work took 25,200 hours to complete.
Although these GPHG wins came in different categories, a closer look reveals that Van Cleef & Arpels watchmaking creations share the same signature qualities: remarkable storytelling, artisanal excellence, and an ability to combine extraordinary design with a mastery of materials and mechanical complexity. Given its track record, watch lovers will be looking forward to finding out what prize the maison will capture at this year’s GPHG.
