ปัจจุบันนี้ เรื่องของหุ่นยนต์หรือปัญญาประดิษฐ์หรือ AI อาจจะดูเป็นเรื่องธรรมดาสามัญ แต่ในยุคหนึ่งนั้น การสร้างสรรค์เครื่องจักรกลประเภทคล้ายคลึงกันนี้ถูกมองว่าเป็นเหมือนศาสตร์ลึกลับเลยทีเดียว เพราะการจะสร้างกลจักรที่มีระบบการทำงานของตนเองนั้นไม่ใช่เรื่องง่ายๆ สิ่งที่ดูจะใกล้เคียงกับสิ่งที่เรียกว่า “หุ่นยนต์” ในยุคนี้ก็คงหนีไม่พ้น “นาฬิกาตั้งโต๊ะหุ่นกล” หรือ “automaton” นั่นเอง
คำว่า automaton ในภาษากรีกโบราณ แปลว่า “กระทำด้วยตนเอง” คำๆ นี้จึงถูกนำมาใช้เรียกเครื่องจักรที่ปฏิบัติตามชุดคำสั่งเพื่อทำหน้าที่บางอย่าง ในช่วงแรก นาฬิกาตั้งโต๊ะหุ่นกลถูกสร้างขึ้นมาเพื่อเลียนแบบธรรมชาติและมนุษย์ เช่น เสียงนกร้องหรือเสียงดนตรี โดยมีตุ๊กตาหุ่นกลขยับไปมาตามจังหวะ ความคล้ายคลึงในหลายๆ อย่าง ทั้งการใช้ชุดกลไกอันซับซ้อน รายละเอียดด้านสุนทรียะและงานฝีมือขั้นสูงทำให้การประดิษฐ์นาฬิกาตั้งโต๊ะหุ่นกลกลายเป็นความท้าทายและความหลงใหลของช่างทำนาฬิกาได้ไม่ยากนัก เมื่อได้เข้าสู่วงการนาฬิกา นาฬิกาตั้งโต๊ะหุ่นกลนี้จึงถูกตีความออกมาอย่างหลากหลาย ทั้งในรูปแบบนาฬิกาข้อมือไปจนถึงนาฬิกาขนาดใหญ่
แต่ก็ไม่ใช่ทุกแบรนด์ที่สามารถสร้างสรรค์นาฬิกาตั้งโต๊ะหุ่นกลได้ โดยหนึ่งในแบรนด์ที่ยืนหยัดสร้างสรรค์นาฬิกาตั้งโต๊ะหุ่นกลอยู่ในปัจจุบันคือ Van Cleef & Arpels สำหรับ Van Cleef & Arpels ธรรมชาติคือแรงบันดาลใจอันไร้ที่สิ้นสุด และนาฬิกาตั้งโต๊ะหุ่นกล Éveil du Cyclamen ก็คือหนึ่งในตัวอย่างผลงานสร้างสรรค์ที่สดุดีแรงบันดาลใจอันยิ่งใหญ่นี้ เมื่อกดให้นาฬิกาทำงาน ดอกซิคลามองจะค่อยๆ แหวกตัว และเผยให้เห็นผีเสื้อทองคำขาวตัวน้อยที่รังสรรค์ขึ้นด้วยเทคนิคพลิคอาจูร์เอนาเมลโบยบินไปมาราวกับมีชีวิต นาฬิกาตั้งโต๊ะหุ่นกลเครื่องนี้มีขนาดสูงประมาณ 27 ซม. และกว้าง 21.5 ซม. ฐานชั้นล่างผลิตจากหินอเวนจูรีนสีเขียวและมีกลไกบอกเวลาแบบคร่าวๆ เป็นชั่วโมง ถัดขึ้นไปเป็นถ้วยหยกสีม่วงที่อัดแน่นด้วยมวลหมู่ดอกซิคลามองซึ่งไล่เฉดสีชมพูและม่วงได้อย่างเป็นธรรมชาติ
ธีมดอกไม้และผีเสื้อยังคงปรากฏอยู่ในผลงานนาฬิกาตั้งโต๊ะหุ่นกล Floraison du Nénuphar เมื่อกดให้นาฬิกาทำงาน กลีบอันแสนบอบบางของดอกบัวจะบานออก เผยให้เห็นถึงผีเสื้อทองคำขาวที่รังสรรค์ขึ้นด้วยเทคนิคพลิคอาจูร์เอนาเมลเช่นกัน ออโตมาตอนเครื่องนี้มีขนาดสูงประมาณ 27 ซม. และกว้าง 21.5 ซม. ฐานชั้นล่างผลิตจากหินอ่อนกริอ็อตต์ และมีกลไกบอกเวลาแบบคร่าวๆ เป็นชั่วโมง ถัดขึ้นไปเป็นถ้วยหินแร่แช็ตตัคไคต์สีออกเขียวซึ่งเป็นฐานของดอกบัว
และนอกจากธรรมชาติบนโลกแล้ว Van Cleef & Arpels ยังเล่าถึงความสวยงามของจักรวาลผ่านผลงานนาฬิกาตั้งโต๊ะหุ่นกล Planétarium ที่มีขนาดใหญ่ถึง 50 x 66.5 ซม. นาฬิการุ่นนี้ประกอบด้วยดวงอาทิตย์ ดวงจันทร์ โลก และดาวเคราะห์ในระบบสุริยะอย่างดาวพุธ ดาวศุกร์ ดาวอังคาร ดาวพฤหัสและดาวเสาร์ที่เริงระบำอยู่ในวงโคจรของตนเอง โดยมีรอบระยะเวลาการโคจรตรงกับของจริง (เช่น ดาวพุธมีวิถีการโคจร 88 วัน ส่วนดาวศุกร์มีวิถีการโคจร 224 วัน) เมื่อกดให้กลไกทำงาน ดาวหางก็จะพุ่งออกมาจากประตูเล็กๆ และหมุนรอบหน้าปัดเป็นวงกลมเพื่อบอกเวลา โดยมีท่วงทำนองที่ทางแบรนด์สร้างสรรค์ร่วมกับศิลปินชาวสวิส มิเชล ทิราบอสโก ประกอบ
ในส่วนของวัสดุนั้นดวงอาทิตย์ประกอบด้วยก้านทองคำ 500 จำนวนชิ้นที่ด้านบนประดับด้วยแซฟไฟร์สีเหลือง โกเมนสเปซซาร์ไทท์และเพชร สร้างเอฟเฟ็กต์ที่ดูบางเบาและมีมิติ ส่วนดาวพุธสร้างสรรค์ขึ้นจากหินคริโซเพรสประกอบด้วยทองคำขาว แซฟไฟร์และเพชร ดาวศุกร์ชูความโดดเด่นของโรสควอตซ์ ทองคำและทองคำขาว รวมถึงแซฟไฟร์สีชมพู ดาวโลกประดับด้วยเทอร์ควอยซ์ ทองคำขาว แซฟไฟร์ โกเมนซาวอไรท์และเพชร

ดูจากวัสดุที่หายากและงานฝีมือสุดประณีตตามแบบฉบับของแบรนด์แล้ว ไม่ต้องเดาเลยว่ากว่าจะสร้างสรรค์นาฬิกาตั้งโต๊ะหุ่นกลให้ได้สักเครื่องนั้นจะต้องใช้เวลาขนาดไหน และต้องใช้ช่างฝีมือกี่คน และแน่นอนว่ามูลค่านั้นย่อมประเมินค่ามิได้แน่นอน

Robots and artificial intelligence may be common in everyday life today, but the making of self-acting mechanisms was once regarded as a mystery science, given the difficulties involved. The only things existing in those days that could be considered similar to the robots we have now would be automatons.
The word “automaton” – derived from the ancient Greek word for “self-acting” – is used to describe a mechanical device that automatically performs a sequence of operations according to a set of rules. The first tabletop automatons were made to mimic natural or manmade things. They might simulate a birdsong or play a melody, for example, while animating a mechanical puppet to move in time with the music.
With so many similarities to watchmaking – from the use of highly elaborate mechanisms to the aesthetics of the details to the sophisticated craftsmanship involved – it didn’t take long for the making of tabletop automatons to become both a challenge and a passion for watchmakers. And once they entered the realm of horology, automatons inspired a large diversity of interpretations, from wristwatches to large clocks.
Which is not to say that every watchmaker has the capability to make automatons – far from it. One that continues to make them today is the storied house of Van Cleef & Arpels, for whom nature is a source of endless inspiration. Their Éveil du Cyclamen automaton pays a brilliant tribute to the wonders of nature. When it stirs to life, the delicate bouquet of cyclamens slowly opens to reveal a white-gold butterfly adorned with plique-à-jour enamel, which flaps its wings realistically over the precious blossoms. Measuring 27 cm high and 21.5 cm wide, the exquisite object consists of a green aventurine base with a rotating ring that tells the hours and, above it, a bowl of purple jade filled with cyclamens in nuanced shades of pink and purple.
The flowers-and-butterfly theme appears again in the Floraison du Nénuphar automaton. At its heart is an enchanting water lily, which opens on demand to show a butterfly made of white gold and plique-à-jour enamel. Standing 27 cm high and 21.5 cm across, the object has a base of griotte marble with hour indicator in the form of a rotating ring, surmounted by a green shattuckite bowl on which the water lily rests.
Looking beyond Planet Earth for inspiration, Van Cleef & Arpels has created an extraordinary object to represent the marvels of the universe. Beneath a glass globe measuring 50 cm x 66.5 cm, the Planétarium automaton features the Sun, Moon, Earth, Mercury, Venus, Mars, Jupiter and Saturn, each object moving in its own orbit and to its own rhythm, which corresponds to its actual rotation speed (e.g. Mercury completes its orbit in 88 days; Venus, in 224 days). When the automaton comes to life, a shooting star appears from a small door and circles the dial to indicate the hour, accompanied by a melody specially created in partnership with Swiss musician Michel Tirabosco.
In terms of materials, the piece is nothing short of awe-inspiring. The sun is made up of 500 gold stems set with yellow sapphires, spessartite garnets and diamonds, creating an effect of lightness and depth. Mercury is represented by a chrysoprase bead surrounded by white gold, sapphires and diamonds. Venus is fashioned from rose quartz accentuated with yellow and white gold and pink sapphires. Earth, represented by a sphere of turquoise, is encircled by a jewelry structure in white gold, sapphires, tsavorite garnets and diamonds.
Orbiting around Earth, the Moon is fashioned from a moonstone surrounded by white gold, yellow gold and diamonds. Mars gets its intense hues from red jasper enhanced by rose gold and pink sapphires. Jupiter draws the eye with a heart in brown-toned jasper and a border in yellow and white gold, sapphires and diamonds, while Saturn, crafted from obsidian, sports rings of white and yellow gold, sapphires and diamonds. On the base of the automaton are several dials including the hour/minute display, a perpetual calendar indicating the day, month and year, and a power reserve display.
Given the rarity of the materials and level of craftsmanship involved, it’s anyone’s guess how much time and how many people it takes to produce even one automaton of such exquisiteness. As for the price, let’s just say that they firmly belong in the category of priceless objects.
