เมื่อครั้งที่เราเจอคุณแพททริค พรูนิโอซ์เป็นครั้งแรกที่งาน SIHH 2018 หลังเขาเข้ารับตำแหน่งซีอีโอของ Ulysse Nardin เราถามคุณแพททริคว่าแบรนด์นี้จะเปลี่ยนไปอย่างไรภายใต้การนำของเขา สิ่งหนึ่งที่เขาตอบเราก็คือว่า Ulysse Nardin แต่เดิมนั้นมักจะสื่อสารถึงศักยภาพหรือสิ่งที่ตนทำเพียงแค่ 30% แต่จากนั้นไป หากทำ 100 ก็จะพูด 100 แล้ว แล้วเราก็ได้เห็นว่า Ulysse Nardin ค่อยๆ เปลี่ยนบุคลิกจนดูมีความเฟี้ยวฟ้าวมากขึ้นตลอดระยะเวลาสองปีที่ผ่านมา ก็ใครเลยจะคิดว่าวันหนึ่งแบรนด์เงียบๆ ขรึมๆ จากเมืองเลอล็อคจะลุกขึ้นมาใช้โฆษณารูปปลาฉลามบุกเมืองอย่างนี้ …
นาฬิการุ่นใหม่ที่น่าจะมีความสำคัญที่สุดสำหรับ Ulysse Nardin ในปี ค.ศ. 2020 นี้น่าจะเป็นผลงานที่มีชื่อว่า Blast ซึ่ง Ulysse Nardin ใช้ฤกษ์เปิดตัวพร้อมกับงาน Geneva Watch Days 2020 ซึ่งจัดระหว่างวันที่ 26-29 สิงหาคม คอนเซปท์ที่วางไว้คือการเป็นเรือนเวลาสำหรับนักผจญภัยหรือผู้ที่มีจิตใจอาจหาญท้าทายสภาพแวดล้อมที่ไม่เป็นมิตรต่อมนุษย์ โดยมีภาพสำหรับการสื่อสารที่สำคัญเป็นภาพภูเขาไฟระเบิด
เมื่อจะทำแคมเปญแรงๆ อย่างนี้ก็ต้องมีแบรนด์แอมบาสเดอร์ที่มีดีกรีเหมาะสม ในครั้งนี้ Ulysse Nardin เลือกจับมือกับคาร์สเทน ปีเตอร์ ช่างภาพชาวเยอรมันที่ได้รับรางวัล World Press Photo และมีผลงานปรากฏในนิตยสาร National Geographic อย่างต่อเนื่อง เพราะคุณคาร์สเทนคนนี้เป็นทั้งนักไต่เขา นักสำรวจถ้ำ นักดำน้ำ และนักอื่นๆ อีกมากมาย เขาไม่เคยย่นย่อท้อต่ออุปสรรคที่อยู่ข้างหน้าจึงสามารถกลับมาพร้อมด้วยภาพถ่ายที่ดูแปลกตาในแต่ละทริป ไม่ว่าจะเป็นการดำน้ำแบบสกูบาในธารน้ำแข็งบนภูเขามงต์บล็องหรือการสำรวจถ้ำบนเกาะบอร์เนียว หรืออย่างภูเขาไฟต่างๆ เขาก็ไปเยือนมาแล้วแบบไม่เกรงใจลาวาหรืออะไรทั้งสิ้น เมื่อเขาเดินทางได้อีกครั้งก็จะต้องใส่ Ulysse Nardin Blast ไปลุยเป็นแน่ เรานี่นั่งรอดูวริสท์ช็อทเลย
โดยพื้นฐานแล้ว Blast ก็คือนาฬิกา Skeleton Tourbillon ที่เรารู้จักกันอยู่แล้วในโฉมใหม่ที่คมคายและแข็งแกร่งยิ่งขึ้น ดูเผินๆ คุณอาจจะนึกว่านี่คือ Executive Skeleton Tourbillon เพราะสายตากวาดไปเจอบริดจ์ทรงสี่เหลี่ยมผืนผ้าที่คาดอยู่กลาง เห็นแบเรลที่ตำแหน่ง 12 นาฬิกาและเห็นตูร์บิยองที่ตำแหน่งหกนาฬิกา ครั้นเมื่อสังเกตอีกนิดจะเห็นว่าหลักชั่วโมงของ Blast นั้นไม่มีที่เป็นเลขโรมันเหมือน Executive Skeleton Tourbillon และตัวเครื่องของ Blast จะมีรูปทรงตัว X คู่ซ้อนอยู่ตรงกลางเครื่องเพื่อเสริมความเสถียรให้กับสถาปัตยกรรมโดยรวม และขาตัวเรือนของ Blast ก็มีเหลี่ยมมุมและความดุดันมากกว่า Executive Skeleton Tourbillon อย่างเห็นได้ชัด
เครื่องที่ใช้ในนาฬิการุ่นนี้คอรุ่น UN-172 ซึ่งเป็นการพัฒนาต่อยอดจาก UN-171 เดิมโดยการเพิ่มระบบขึ้นลานอัตโนมัติเข้าไป ทำให้ Blast เป็นนาฬิกาออโต้รุ่นแรกในตระกูล Skeleton ของ Ulysse Nardin โรเตอร์ของ UN-172 เป็นแบบไมโครโรเตอร์ติดตั้งอยู่เหนือแบเรลโดยตรงและผลิตจากแพลทตินัมจึงมีน้ำหนักดีและช่วยเพิ่มประสิทธิภาพในการขึ้นลานได้เป็นอย่างดี ทั้งยังมองเห็นการแกว่งไปมาได้ตลอดเวลาที่สวมใส่นาฬิกาอย่างเพลินๆ ด้วย
ไมโครโรเตอร์ดังกล่าวนี้มีตัวเลขพิกัดสลักอยู่ชุดหนึ่งคือ 47°03’36.2”N, 06°45’12.8”E พิกัดนี้คือที่ตั้งสำนักงานใหญ่ของ Ulysse Nardin ที่เมืองเลอล็อค ประเทศสวิตเซอร์แลนด์ เราคิดว่านี่อาจจะเป็นเครื่องย้ำเตือนว่านาฬิกาเรือนนี้ได้เดินทางมาไกลบ้านเพียงใดแล้วก็เป็นได้ บนแบเรลข้างใต้มีวลี Silicium Technology ซึ่งหมายถึงการใช้ซิลิเซียมในการผลิตเอสเคปเมนท์วีล แพลเล็ทฟอร์คและบาลานซ์สปริงในเครื่องนาฬิกาฟลายอิ้งตูร์บิยองความถี่ 2.5 เฮิตซ์ กำลังลานสำรอง 72 ชั่วโมงรุ่นนี้

The firm’s iconic Skeleton Tourbillon watch is reinterpreted in a new, body-built version.

When we first met Patrick Pruniaux during his first SIHH as the Chief Executive Officer of Ulysse Nardin, we asked him what was going to change at the firm under his leadership. One of the things he mentioned was that Ulysse Nardin was communicating only about 30% of what they were doing, and that he wanted to change that to 100%. Well, a lot has changed along that line in the past two years. The quiet company from Le Locle has become more vocal, edgy even with visuals like their “shark in the city” series and all.
To mark the beginning of Geneva Watch Days 2020 which take place from 26 to 29 August, Ulysse Nardin has unveiled their first (and probably the most significant) launch of the year. Blast is the name of the timepiece, designed to conjure the image of extreme conditions like an erupting volcano.
Reinforcing this particular idea of exploration is Carsten Peter. A World Press Photo-winning photographer and a regular contributor to National Geographic magazine, the German is a climber, a caver and a diver, among other things. As he never shies away from the extremes, he has successfully documented rare scenes from his many journeys like scuba diving in a Mont Blanc glacier and caving in Borneo. Interestingly, he has rappelled into active volcanoes as well, complete with lava lakes and all. We cannot wait to see his wristshots with the new Ulysse Nardin Blast watch once he can travel again.
Blast is essentially a reinterpreted, body-built version of the firm’s iconic Skeleton Tourbillon watch. It may look like the Ulysse Nardin Executive Skeleton Tourbillon from the first glance with a rectangular bridge providing structural support to movement parts like the barrel at the top and the tourbillon at the bottom. Let us give you some quick pointers when comparing the two: the Blast does not feature Roman numerals found on the Executive Skeleton Tourbillon; a double X pattern is built into the movement architecture of the Blast for enhanced integrity; and, the Blast’s lugs are decidedly more angular.
The movement used, the UN-172, is a self-winding version of the UN-171 – making this the first self-winding watch within the Skeleton range of Ulysse Nardin. A micro rotor, executed in platinum for weight and inherent winding efficiency, is installed on top of the barrel where its motion adds to the visual dynamism of this flying tourbillon watch.
We can see on the micro rotor an engraving of the coordinate 47°03’36.2”N, 06°45’12.8”E for the location of Ulysse Nardin’s headquarter in Le Locle, Switzerland. Perhaps, it is a reminder of how far from it each Blast timepiece will have travelled across the globe. On the barrel underneath, the “Silicium Technology” inscription denotes the use of silicium escape wheel, pallet fork and balance spring in this 2.5-hertz calibre with 72 hours of power reserve.
Ulysse Nardin has successfully maintained the technical and aesthetic codes for which they are known while allowing the Blast to be more daring, more audacious than its predecessors.
