If you are a fan of Ulysse Nardin watches, then you may already a Freak model in your personal collection, or at the very least, you are already acquainted with the timepiece that shook up the watch world with its unique way of telling time without reliance on typical hands and dial, or even a crown to set the time for that matter.
Let’s rewind to 2001 when the Freak made its debut. That original watch revolutionized watchmaking by introducing a movement that rotated freely, serving as the minute hand, while an hour indication was displayed on a rotating disc below. What’s more? Adjusting the time was done without the use of a crown. Simply unlock the bezel and turn in the desired direction and the time indication would change correspondingly.
Jumping ahead to 2019, another pivotal year for the Freak collection, where the introduction of the Freak X marked a significant milestone. It retained the essence of the Freak lineage but introduced a crown, making it more understandable and approachable for regular watch users. The popularity of the Freak X led to the creation of various versions, culminating in the latest addition, the Freak [X OPS], unveiled at Watches and Wonders Shanghai, which received a warm reception from avid Freak fans.
The Freak [X OPS] inherits its design from its predecessor, the Freak X, but comes with a fresh twist of a sleek khaki-green exterior. The case flanks on top of the black DLC titanium case are made of a proprietary material called Magma that fuses black carbon fiber with green epoxy resin, creating a rugged pattern reminiscent of Damascus steel. Paired with a matching khaki-green fabric strap, it exudes a sporty yet luxurious vibe. Another standout feature of the Freak [X OPS] is the use of khaki green Super-LumiNova on hour markers which corresponds with the total look of the timepiece while emitting a useful green glow. Now you are set for any adventure, thanks to the watch’s water resistance rating of 50 meters.
The Ulysse Nardin Freak [X OPS] operates with a self-winding caliber UN-230, boasting a balance wheel and escapement crafted from silicon for the material’s light weight and high resistance. This power reserve is a generous 72 hours.
