เกียรติประวัติอันยาวนานของนาฬิกาดำน้ำ Tudor ที่กองทัพเรือหลากประเทศเลือกให้ความไว้วางใจ

ปัจจัยสู่ความสำเร็จของนาฬิกานั้นไม่ได้มีอยู่หลายปัจจัยนัก และหากนาฬิการุ่นใดมีทั้งดีไซน์ที่ชัดเจน งานผลิตที่มีคุณภาพและประวัติศาสตร์ที่อ้างอิงได้อย่างเช่น Tudor Black Bay แล้วก็เรียกได้ว่าครบเครื่องอย่างแท้จริง Black Bay เป็นคอลเลคชั่นนาฬิกาที่เปิดตัวเมื่อปี ค.ศ. 2012 และมีจุดเด่นอยู่ที่เข็มบอกเวลาทรงสโนวเฟลคที่ Tudor ใช้มายาวนานตั้งแต่ปี ค.ศ. 1969 ในนาฬิการุ่น Ref. 7021 ซึ่งนักสะสมต่างต้องการจะมีไว้ในครอบครอง แต่ประวัติการผลิตนาฬิกาดำน้ำของ Tudor นั้นย้อนกลับไปได้ก่อนนั้นอีกจนถึงช่วงแรกที่โลกเริ่มมีนาฬิกาดำน้ำเลย ไม่เพียงเท่านั้น กองทัพเรือของประเทศต่างๆ อย่างเช่นฝรั่งเศสและสหรัฐอเมริกายังไว้วางใจเลือกใช้นาฬิกาดำน้ำของ Tudor ด้วย เพราะผ่านการพิสูจน์แล้วว่ามีความทนทานเพียงพอสำหรับการใช้งานในภารกิจต่างๆ
สำหรับคอลเลคชั่น Black Bay ในปัจจุบันนั้น หลังจากที่ประสบความสำเร็จอย่างต่อเนื่องนาน 6 ปีด้วยตัวเรือนขนาด 41 มม. Tudor ก็ออก Black Bay Fifty-Eight ตามออกมาในปี ค.ศ. 2018 หรือ 60 ปีหลังจากปีที่เป็นชื่อรุ่นนั่นเอง Black Bay Fifty-Eight มีตัวเรือนขนาด 39 มม. ซึ่งเป็นที่ชื่นชอบของคนรักนาฬิกาวินเทจและลูกค้าที่มีข้อมือเล็ก
ขนาดเส้นผ่าศูนย์กลาง 39 มม. ดังกล่าวนั้นเป็นจุดกึ่งกลางพอดีระหว่างนาฬิการุ่น Ref. 7924 หรือที่มีสมญานามว่า Big Crown จากปี ค.ศ. 1958 ซึ่งมีขนาด 37 มม. และนาฬิกา Black Bay รุ่นปกติในยุคสมัยปัจจุบันซึ่งมีขนาด 41 มม. นาฬิกา Black Bay Fifty-Eight มีรูปลักษณ์ใกล้เคียงกับนาฬิกา Tudor รุ่นแรกที่กองทัพเรือฝรั่งเศสและอเมริกันเลือกใช้เป็นรุ่นแรกในช่วงครึ่งหลังของทศวรรษที่ 1950 บนหน้าปัดมีลวดลายที่ตกแต่งด้วยสีทองและบนขอบตัวเรือนมีสัญลักษณ์สามเหลี่ยมสีแดง ดังนั้น Black Bay Fifty-Eight จึงเป็นนาฬิกาสมัยใหม่ที่ออกมาจากโรงงานพร้อมกับกลิ่นอายสไตล์วินเทจที่เต็มเปี่ยม เลือกสวมใส่บนข้อมือด้วยสายสเตนเลสสตีล สายผ้าซึ่งทอด้วยเทคนิคฌาคกาด์โดยบริษัท Julien Faure ที่เมืองแซ็ง-เอเตียน หรือหากชอบสายหนังแบบปกติก็ย่อมมีให้เลือกด้วยเช่นกัน
Tudor ต่อยอดความสำเร็จของนาฬิการุ่นนี้ด้วย Black Bay Fifty-Eight Navy Blue ซึ่งเรามีโอกาสได้รีวิวนานหนึ่งสัปดาห์เมื่อต้นเดือนกรกฎาคมหรือทันทีที่เปิดตัวพร้อมกันทั่วโลก ในช่วงเวลานั้นเราเองก็คาดไม่ถึงเหมือนกันเพราะนึกว่า Tudor จะไม่ออกนาฬิกาอะไรใหม่ในปีนี้แล้ว สีน้ำเงินของหน้าปัดและขอบตัวเรือนทำให้เรานึกถึงนาฬิกาดำน้ำ Tudor ในแบบที่กองทัพเรือฝรั่งเศสเลือกใช้เป็นเวลานานเกือบ 20 ปี ทั้งนี้ Tudor มีธรรมเนียมในการใช้สีน้ำเงินมาตั้งแต่ปี ค.ศ. 1969 แล้ว ครั้นเมื่อมาถึงวันนี้ สีน้ำเงินก็ยังคงดูทันสมัยและเป็นที่ชื่นชอบของผู้ซื้อนาฬิกาสมัยใหม่อีกต่างหาก แถมสีน้ำเงินนี้ยังทำให้คุณผู้หญิงใส่ Black Bay Fifty-Eight ได้ง่ายขึ้นด้วย จากเดิมที่เป็นสีดำก็มีลูกค้าสาวๆ ให้ความสนใจกันอยู่ไม่น้อยอยู่แล้ว เพราะความสปอร์ตที่ลงตัวแบบไม่มากไปไม่น้อยไป และขนาดตัวเรือนที่กำลังพอเหมาะ
แต่ถ้าคุณเป็นคนชอบนาฬิกาเรือนโต ชอบความดิบและดุ ไม่ต้องคิดมาก ตรงไปที่ Black Bay Bronze ได้เลย เพราะนี่คือนาฬิกาที่ออกแบบมาเพื่อการผจญภัยโดยเฉพาะ ดีไซน์ของนาฬิการุ่นนี้อาจไม่ตรงกับรุ่นใดในอดีตของ Tudor ก็จริง แต่คะแนนความเกี่ยวพันกับโลกของท้องทะเลก็มาแบบเต็ม 10 ไม่หัก เพราะตัวเรือนขนาด 43 มม. ของ Black Bay รุ่นนี้ผลิตจากบรอนซ์ซึ่งเป็นวัสดุเก่าแก่ของวงการเดินเรือ มีคุณสมบัติทนทานต่อการกัดกร่อนจึงมักถูกนำไปใช้ผลิตอุปกรณ์หรือชิ้นส่วนที่จะต้องแช่อยู่ในน้ำทะเลเป็นเวลานาน
บรอนซ์ซึ่งเป็นอัลลอยที่มีส่วนผสมของคอปเปอร์และอลูมิเนียมนั้นจัดเป็นโลหะที่มีบุคลิกภาพชัดเจน กล่าวคือ เมื่อใช้งานอุปกรณ์ที่ผลิตจากบรอนซ์ไปสักระยะหนึ่งก็จะเกิดพาทิน่าขึ้นบนพื้นผิวของอุปกรณ์นั้น พาทิน่าดังกล่าวจะมีลักษณะเข้มหรืออ่อนเพียงใดนั้นก็ขึ้นอยู่กับสภาพแวดล้อมที่อุปกรณ์ชิ้นนั้นได้พบเจอ สำหรับการผลิตตัวเรือนนาฬิกานั้น Tudor ก็ทำการวิจัยและพัฒนามาเป็นอย่างดีแล้วจนแน่ใจได้ว่าพาทิน่าที่เกิดขึ้นบนตัวเรือนขัดซาตินของ Black Bay Bronze จะดูดีและสม่ำเสมอทั่วถึง และเข้ากันได้เป็นอย่างดีกับหน้าปัดสีสเลทเกรย์และสายผ้าหรือสายหนังสีเดียวกันตามแต่ที่คุณจะเลือกซื้อ
นาฬิการุ่นสุดท้ายที่เราจะกล่าวถึงเพื่อเป็นการสรุปจบบทความเรื่องประวัติศาสตร์ที่เกี่ยวพันกับกองทัพเรือของนาฬิกา Tudor ก็คือเรือนเวลาที่ไม่เหมือนใครในชื่อ Black Bay P01 ซึ่งมีที่มาจาก Commando Project เมื่อปี ค.ศ. 1967 ในครั้งนั้น Tudor ต้องออกแบบนาฬิการุ่นใหม่ให้กับกองทัพเรือสหรัฐเพื่อใช้ทดแทนนาฬิกา Tudor รุ่นเดิมที่ใช้อยู่ในเวลานั้น โดยทางกองทัพก็มีข้อกำหนดต่างๆ มาให้ และ Tudor ก็ตอบโจทย์นั้นได้ แต่ในที่สุดกองทัพเรือสหรัฐกลับเลือกใช้นาฬิกา Tudor รุ่นอื่นที่มีความซับซ้อนน้อยกว่านี้แทน โปรเจคนี้และนาฬิการุ่น Prototype 1 ที่ผลิตออกมาเป็นตัวอย่างจึงถูกเก็บขึ้นหิ้งไป
เวลาผ่านไปกว่าครึ่งศตวรรษ นาฬิกาต้นแบบเรือนนั้นจึงถูกนำออกมาปัดฝุ่นอีกครั้งและผลิตเป็น Black Bay P01 อย่างที่เราเห็นกันอยู่นี้ P01 เป็นนาฬิกาลูกครึ่งระหว่างนาฬิกาดำน้ำและนาฬิกาแล่นเรือ จุดสังเกตสำคัญคือเม็ดมะยมที่จัดวางในตำแหน่ง 4 นาฬิกาด้วยเหตุผลทางด้านสรีระศาสตร์ แทนที่จะอยู่ที่ตำแหน่ง 3 นาฬิกา และมีบ่าป้องกันเม็ดมะยมอย่างที่ Black Bay รุ่นอื่นๆ ไม่มีด้วย ขอบตัวเรือนเป็นแบบหมุนได้สองทิศทางและบังคับให้อยู่กับที่ด้วยล็อคที่ซ่อนอยู่ในรูปของชิ้นเอ็นด์พีซที่ตำแหน่ง 12 นาฬิกา ถือเป็นฟังก์ชั่นที่จดสิทธิบัตรไว้ตั้งแต่อดีตแต่ไม่เคยเผยให้โลกได้เห็นจนถึงวันนี้ ตัวเลขบนขอบตัวเรือนไม่ได้เป็นสเกลนาที หากแต่เป็นสเกล 12 ชั่วโมงซึ่งผู้สวมใส่นาฬิกาสามารถใช้จับเวลาแบบหยาบเป็นระยะเวลานานระดับชั่วโมงก็ได้ หรือจะตั้งเพื่อบอกเวลาในประเทศที่สองเลยก็ได้เช่นกัน ทั้งหมดนี้ประกอบกันเป็นเสน่ห์ที่ไม่เหมือนใครของ Black Bay P01 และทำให้นาฬิการุ่นนี้เป็นที่กล่าวขานถึงกันในวงกว้างเมื่อปี ค.ศ. 2019 ที่มีการเปิดตัวนาฬิกาออกมา

The collective history lives on in the brand’s famous Black Bay collection.

There are a few recipes of success in the watch industry. If you have a solid design, a solid craftsmanship and a solid history, you are in for a hat-trick like the Tudor Black Bay watches. Originally introduced in 2012, the collection is immediately distinguishable by the snowflake hands. These emblematic hands were introduced for the first time in 1969 in the Ref. 7021 – now a rarefied collector’s item. However, even before that monumental year, Tudor watches were already favoured by navies of the world such as that of the French and the American, thanks to their robustness and dependability since the pioneering days of this technical watch genre.
Fast forward to the present days, after six years of success with its median case size of 41 mm, Tudor followed up with an important variant in 2018. This is known as the Black Bay Fifty-Eight. Released exactly 60 years after its namesake year, the model proposes a smaller proportion of 39 mm which is praised both by vintage watch lovers and other customers with smaller wrists.
The particular diameter is exactly halfway between the 37 mm of Ref. 7924 from 1958 and the 41 mm of regular Black Bay watches. As the model most similar to the historic “Big Crown” watches first used by the French and the US navies in the late 1950s, the Fifty-Eight is your neovintage timepiece, complete with gold accents on the dial and red triangle on the rotating bezel. It is configured from the manufacture on either the stainless steel bracelet, the fabric strap (woven by Jacquard looms at the Julien Faure company in Saint-Etienne) or the customary leather strap.
Most recently, in July this year, World of Watches/Luxuo Thailand was honoured to receive the Black Bay Fifty-Eight Navy Blue for a one-week, on-wrist review. It was something out of the blue as we thought Tudor was going to skip 2020 totally, and it reminded us of Tudor models in blue which was the colour of choice of the French Navy for nearly 20 years. In addition to representing a Tudor’s tradition which dates back to a certain model from 1969, the blue shade of the dial and the bezel is resolutely contemporary and corresponds nicely with the taste of modern, discerning watch buyers. Like the Fifty-Eight in black, this novelty in blue appeals to people who appreciate that bit of a vintage charm and men with smaller wrists, as well as ladies who are keen to wear something sporty that does not look gargantuan on their wrist.
On the other stylistic extreme is the Black Bay Bronze. An excellent choice for those who dare to be bolder, this 43 mm watch is generously sized for adventure. While the overall design of the Black Bay Bronze is not linked to any particular Tudor watch, the bronze material used to produce its case is firmly rooted in the tradition of the navy and the sea. The aluminium-copper alloy found use in naval engineering, especially for submerged parts, as it is highly resistant against corrosion.
It can also be considered a living metal as a subtle, unique patina will form on the surface of the case. This patina occurs at random as it is dependent upon the elements to which the watch is exposed. Nevertheless, Tudor took care to ensure that the development of this phenomenon is visually pleasing and homogeneous across the satin-brushed surface of the case. It will look right at home with the cool slate-grey dial and the matching fabric or leather strap of your choice.
Lastly, we feel the need to conclude this story of Tudor’s naval heritage with a timepiece of an almost mystical origin: the Black Bay P01. Traceable back to the Commando Project of 1967, this watch was developed to the specifications of the US Navy as a possible replacement to another Tudor model being supplied to them at that time. It carried a particularly useful function which remained unseen to the world until the present days as the Prototype 1 watch was dropped in favour of a simpler Tudor model.
More than half a decade later, the prototype has emerged from the brand’s archives and inspired the creation of a cross between a diver’s watch and a sailing watch. Characteristically, the Black Bay P01 has the crown at the four o’clock position, complete with crown guard, instead of the typical three o’clock configuration for ergonomic reasons. Its rotating bezel is bidirectional and secured in place by an integrated locking device which forms the endpiece at 12 o’clock. The 12-hour graduation on the bezel can be used for approximate, prolonged timing in hours, as well as to indicate time in another zone as desired. These historical and developmental elements combine to make the Black Bay P01 one of the most talked about watches of 2019.
The above paragraphs have served to position the Black Bay collection as the true heir to the brand’s naval heritage. It represents all technical and stylistic elements that a dive watch is supposed to encompass at this time of renewed interest in mechanical timepieces. And, thanks to the thoughtfulness of the Tudor product team, watch enthusiasts are now presented with more aesthetic options of these dive watches than ever.
