For all-round versatility …
Rolex has always been known for dependability. They are credited with the invention of the Oyster as the world’s first waterproof wristwatch case in 1926. The Oyster Perpetual watch today is its direct descendant, now crafted out of a solid block of corrosion-resistant Oystersteel alloy, and guaranteed waterproof to the depth of 100 meters. This quintessential Rolex is worn on an Oyster bracelet of 3-piece solid links, with a folding Oysterclasp and an Easylink comfort extension link. The two largest sizes are 41 and 36 mm.
For the business look …
The Oyster Perpetual Datejust is a watchmaking icon. When it was launched in 1945, it was the first self-winding waterproof chronometer wristwatch to display the date in a window at the three o’clock position, instead of using a hand that points to the date on the edge of a dial. Furthermore, the name Datejust itself references the fact that the date change takes place instantaneously at midnight. This was already before the enhanced practicality of the Cyclops lens was added to the crystal in 1953 to help magnify the date for easy reading.
Made only in precious metals, such as 18 ct yellow, white, or Everose gold or 950 platinum, the Oyster Perpetual Day-Date is the watch of prestige par excellence. Worn by many of the world’s political figures, directors and visionaries, and in particular thanks to its emblematic President bracelet with an evocative name, the Day-Date became known as the “Presidents’ Watch”. This prestigious collection has continued to expand with multiple dials that allow for self-expression, and to improve where the technical aspects are concerned. This paragon of elegance is available in 40 mm and 36 mm.
For long-haul flights and transits …
Rolex watches have long been used by travelers who crisscross the world. It all began in 1955 when Rolex brought to the market the Oyster Perpetual GMT-Master whose 24-hour hand in red and the corresponding graduation on the bidirectional rotatable bezel allowed quick determination of time at any destination. A major improvement followed in 1982 with the Oyster Perpetual GMT-Master II whose hour hand can be independently adjusted to match local time at each stop when needed. Two new versions of the GMT-Master II in yellow Rolesor and 18 ct yellow gold are introduced this year, both featuring a Cerachrom bezel insert in a unique combination of black and grey.
Similarly, the Oyster Perpetual Sky-Dweller serves as a great example of how Rolex is endlessly innovative. First launched in 2012, the 42 mm watch for frequent travellers indicates time in a second country with an off-centre disc. The 12 windows just beyond the hour markers represent the 12 months of the year with the current month marked in red. This element is a part of the Saros annual calendar which is mechanically programmed to be aware of the differing lengths of 30-day and 31-day. The Ring Command System developed and patented by Rolex facilitates setting of all relevant functions through the crown and the three selectable positions of the fluted bezel.
For a day out in the sun …
A watch built to weather adverse environments, the Oyster Perpetual Explorer proved to be a reliable tool at the highest peak in the world. In the early 1950s, Rolex developed professional watches that served as tools and whose functions went far beyond simply telling the time. These watches were intended for professional activities, such as deep-sea diving, aviation, mountain climbing and scientific exploration. The watches generated lasting enthusiasm and became known as the watches of achievers. In 1953, Sir John Hunt’s expedition, in which Sir Edmund Hillary and Tenzing Norgay reached the summit of Mount Everest, was equipped with Oyster Perpetual chronometers. Further evolution followed and the Explorer is currently in available in 40 and 36 mm sizes.
Designed to conquer the open seas, the Oyster Perpetual Yacht-Master is an emblematic sailing timepiece that no way alters its course. Originally launched in 1992, this Professional-category watch is designed for skippers and navigators. It is instantly recognizable by the raised and polished graduations and numerals against the matt background of the Cerachrom bezel insert, offering a perfect blend of functionality and nautical style. One could say that the Yacht-Master is as comfortable on the water as off it. The latest version introduced in 2022 is presented for the first time in RLX titanium – a proprietary grade 5 titanium alloy which is not only lightweight and resistant but can also be given a polished or satin finish as required.
Rolex’s conquest of the deep is perpetuated with the Oyster Perpetual Submariner and Oyster Perpetual Submariner Date watches, conceived in 1953 and 1969, respectively. Over the decades, Rolex made further advances, pushing the limits of watchmaking technology, and developed the Chromalight, a luminescent material that fills the hands and hour markers, emitting a blue glow in dark conditions which lasts up to two times longer than traditional phosphorescent materials. The Swiss watchmaker also developed Cerachrom bezel inserts that are virtually scratchproof and resistant to environmental effects.
First launched in 1963, the Oyster Perpetual Cosmograph Daytona was designed as a chronograph with a tachymeter to suit the use of professional racing drivers. The watch pays tribute to Daytona, Florida, where passion for speed and racing developed in the early 20th century, and its name embodies the historic and privileged bonds between Rolex and motor sport. The latest generation Cosmograph Daytona features subtle refinements all around. Its Oyster case is redesigned for enhanced light reflections on the lugs and the case sides. Meanwhile, on versions where the bezel is made of highly resistant Cerachrom bezel, the bezel would be edged by a thin band of the same metal as the middle case.
For the black tie dress code …
Named after the year when Hans Wilsdorf came up with the name Rolex for his watches and brand in Switzerland, this elegant watch in 18 ct yellow or white gold measures 39 mm in diameter and only 9.50 mm in thickness, corresponding with the demand for slimmer watches. A closer inspection would reveal that the bezel is divided in that it is fluted on the lower part and domed on the upper part – this innovative configuration encircles a classical, matt dial with 3, 9 and 12 numerals and faceted index hour markers. A small seconds subdial quietly marks the passage of time at the six o’clock position.
All watch models presented in this curation have received the Superlative Chronometer certification. This standard of excellence was established by Rolex in 2015. It involves a series of tests conducted internally at Rolex on fully assembled watches to verify their precision, waterproofness, power reserve and self-winding efficiency. This ensures that Superlative Chronometer timepieces perform within the deviation tolerance of +2/-2 seconds per day. As such, they are symbolised by the green seal and the confidence of an international 5-year guarantee.
