จากอดีตสู่ปัจจุบันแห่งการผลิตนาฬิกาสไตล์โอเพนเวิร์คของ Audemars Piguet

การออกแบบนาฬิกาสไตล์โอเพนเวิร์คนั้นถือเป็นความเชี่ยวชาญอย่างหนึ่งที่พัฒนาขึ้นโดยคนสมัยก่อน ช่างนาฬิกาจะต้องใช้ประสบการณ์ในการตัดสินใจที่จะตัดหรือฉลุเนื้อโลหะออกไปจากชิ้นส่วนของเครื่องโดยไม่ส่งผลกระทบกับความแข็งแรงทางโครงสร้างหรือประสิทธิภาพการทำงานของเครื่อง แล้วช่างต้องใช้ทักษะในการขัดแต่งชิ้นส่วนที่อ่อนบางแต่ละชิ้นนี้ให้มีความเงางามตามมาตรฐานของงานประดิษฐ์นาฬิกาชั้นสูงอีกด้วย
Audemars Piguet มีการผลิตนาฬิกาสไตล์โอเพนเวิร์คมาตั้งแต่ยุคทศวรรษที่ 1930 ตัวอย่างของนาฬิกาข้อมือสไตล์นี้ที่เก่าแก่ที่สุดจะเป็นนาฬิการูปทรงสี่เหลี่ยมซึ่งถูกวางจำหน่ายเมื่อปี ค.ศ. 1937 (AP Heritage Inv. 1285) นาฬิกาเรือนนี้คือความล้ำสมัยในยุคนั้นเพราะมีหน้าปัดแบบเปิดที่เผยให้เห็นการทำงานของชิ้นส่วนข้างล่างทั้งหมด แต่ในขณะเดียวกันก็สามารถบอกเวลาอย่างชัดเจนด้วยการการฉลุกรอบรอบหน้าปัดให้เหลือเนื้อโลหะเพียงตัวเลขโรมันตามหลักชั่วโมงต่างๆ เท่านั้น อีกตัวอย่างหนึ่งเป็นนาฬิกามาจากปี ค.ศ. 1956 (Ref. 5036 หรือ AP Heritage Inv. 1785) ซึ่งมีลักษณะคล้ายกัน แต่แตกต่างตรงที่เลขชั่วโมงที่เขียนด้วยเอนาเมลอยู่บนขอบตัวเรือนเสียเลยโดยไม่ต้องมีกรอบหน้าปัดแต่อย่างใด
ในภายหลังเราจึงเริ่มเห็นการผลิตนาฬิกาสไตล์นี้ในคอลเลคชั่น Royal Oak ด้วย อย่างในปี ค.ศ. 2018 ก็มี Royal Oak Double Balance Wheel Openworked Ref. 15466 ซึ่งมีตัวเรือน ขอบตัวเรือนและสายฟรอสต์ไวท์โกลด์ และรุ่น Double Balance Wheel Ref. 15412 และ 15568 ซึ่งเปิดตัวในปีนี้ก็เป็นแบบโอเพนเวิร์คเช่นกัน
นาฬิกาสไตล์โอเพนเวิร์ครุ่นล่าสุดของ Audemars Piguet นั้นเพิ่งจะเปิดตัวหลังจากที่ฉบับกันยายนของเราตีพิมพ์ได้ไม่นาน นั่นก็คือ Code 11.59 by Audemars Piguet Tourbillon Openworked Ref. 26600CR.OO.D009KB.01 ซึ่งมีเครื่องนาฬิกาไล่เฉดสีเทาบรรจุอยู่ในตัวเรือนแบบทูโทน เมื่อครั้งที่มีการเปิดตัว Code 11.59 by Audemars Piguet ในปี ค.ศ. 2019 โดยตัวย่อ CODE เกิดจากการประกอบกันของคุณสมบัติทั้ง 4 ประการ ได้แก่ การท้าทาย (Challenge) การเป็นตัวของตัวเอง (Own) การใช้ความกล้า (Dare) และการพัฒนา (Evolve)

เครื่องนาฬิกาแบบไขลานคาลิเบอร์ 2948 ของนาฬิการุ่นนี้มีขนาดเส้นผ่าศูนย์กลาง 32.25 มม. ดีไซน์ของเครื่องมีความสมมาตรสูงสุดด้วยแบเรลเพื่อการเก็บพลังงาน สำรอง 72 ชั่วโมงที่ต่ำแหน่ง 12 นาฬิกาและตูร์บิยองตรงข้ามกันที่ตำแหน่ง 6 นาฬิกาชิ้นส่วนทั้งหมดถูกตรึงอยู่กับที่ด้วยเพลทและบริดจ์แบบโอเพนเวิร์คสีสเลทเกรย์ที่ซ้อนกันหลายระดับชั้นอย่างมีชั้นเชิง นับเหลี่ยมที่มีการขัดเงาด้วยมือได้ถึง 70 เหลี่ยมด้วยกัน จากนั้นจึงแต่งแต้มให้ดูมีสีเล็กน้อยด้วยเข็มพิงค์โกลด์ 2 เข็มที่ชี้ไปยังสเกลนาทีบนขอบตัวเรือนชั้นในที่ลงแลคเกอร์สีสเลทเกรย์ จุดเด่นทางด้านภายนอกของนาฬิกานั้นก็คือตัวเรือนชั้นกลางที่ผลิตจากพิงค์โกลด์ที่ตอกย้ำความซับซ้อนของสถาปัตยกรรมแห่งการออกแบบโดยรวมได้เป็นอย่างดีเมื่อถูกล้อมกรอบด้วยขอบตัวเรือน ขาตัวเรือนและฝาหลังซึ่งผลิตจากไวท์โกลด์ เมื่อพิจารณาใกล้ๆ คุณจะได้เห็นงานขัดที่ตัดกันระหว่างพื้นผิวที่เป็นแบบขัดซาตินและเหลี่ยมมุมที่เป็นแบบขัดเงาซึ่งจะทำได้ต่อเมื่อใช้มือเท่านั้น
นาฬิกา Audemars Piguet ที่มีตัวเรือนแบบทูโทนนั้นมีเพียงไม่กี่รุ่นจริงๆ จากข้อมูลพบว่านาฬิกาคอมพลิเคชั่นจำนวน 550 เรือนที่ Audemars Piguet ผลิตระหว่างปี ค.ศ. 1882-1969 นั้นมีเพียง 8 เรือนเท่านั้นที่ใช้ทอง 2 ชนิดประกอบกัน และช่วงก่อนปี ค.ศ. 1978 ก็มีนาฬิกา Audemars Piguet เพียงรุ่นเดียวที่ใช้ไวท์โกลด์และพิงค์โกลด์ประกอบกัน เช่นนี้นาฬิกาจักรกลโดยปกติก็เป็นผลงานทางด้านวิศวกรรมอันน่าทึ่งอยู่แล้ว ยิ่งเมื่อประกอบกับการออกแบบในสไตล์โอเพนเวิร์คยิ่งทำให้เรือนเวลานั้นดูมี ความพิเศษยิ่งขึ้นไปอีก เหมือนเช่น Code 11.59 by Audemars Piguet Tourbillon Openworked รุ่นนี้ที่มาพร้อมสายเคลือบยางสีสเลทเกรย์และบานพับไวท์โกลด์สัญลักษณ์ AP

Openworking is an artful expertise mastered by few since days past. Such watchmakers need to know exactly where to cut into the metal in order to expose movement parts, while also exercising great care so as not to compromise the calibre’s integrity or performance. The complexity does not stop there as the watchmakers have to perform refined haute horlogerie decorations on these delicate parts as well.
Audemars Piguet has been offering various forms of openworked watches since the 1930s. One of the earliest examples is the openworked wristwatch. Sold in 1937, the rectangular timepiece (AP Heritage Inv. 1285) was without a doubt avant-garde at the time with cut-out Roman numerals on a frame that resembles an open dial. The exposed movement parts are clearly visible throughout. On another 1956 model (Ref. 5036 or AP Heritage Inv. 1785), the maison decided to create a timepiece that distinguished itself from the other offerings by putting the hour markers on the bezel with enamel, instead of a traditional dial.
The technique made its way to the iconic Royal Oak collection, and several variations have been created since. More recently, we have seen the Royal Oak Double Balance Wheel Openworked Ref. 15466 from 2018 with a frosted gold finish on the white gold bezel, case and bracelet. The Double Balance Wheel versions Ref. 15412 and 15568 which came out this summer 2021 are also openworked.
The latest openworked watch from Audemars Piguet, introduced just after our September issue went to print, is the Code 11.59 by Audemars Piguet Tourbillon Openworked Ref. 26600CR.OO.D009KB.01. It comes in a new two-tone case with the movement in different shades of grey.
When the Code 11.59 by Audemars Piguet was launched in 2019, it comprised six key models, and one of them was the Code 11.59 by Audemars Piguet Tourbillon Openworked. Originally produced in pink gold (Ref. 26600OR.OO.D002CR.01), the timepiece embodied all four qualities that form the ethos of the collection: Challenge, Own, Dare and Evolve.
“The architectural nature of the Code 11.59 by Audemars Piguet makes it the ideal canvas for complex and openworked mechanisms, as the case and movement seamlessly blend into a unified aesthetic. The new 26600CR openworked tourbillon features a multi-toned grey openworked movement housed within a white gold case with a pink gold octagonal middle case,” shares Head of Complications Michael Friedman. “The entire creation is an expression of hand-finishing and contemporary design that can only be achieved when our talented watchmakers, craftspeople, technicians, engineers and product experts work hand-in-hand on behalf of our clients that expect the extraordinary.”
Measuring 32.25 mm in diameter, the hand-wound Calibre 2948 offers a power reserve of 72 hours. Its astutely symmetrical architecture places the barrel at the top and the tourbillon directly opposite at six o’clock. Everything is held in place by a mesmerising, multi-tiered slate grey openworked plate and bridges, with 70 hand-polished angles among them. A subtle touch of colour is afforded by the long pink gold hands which trace along the minute scale on the slate grey lacquered inner bezel.
Externally, the pink gold octagonal middle case serves to highlight the watch’s sophisticated architecture as it is nestled in the white gold extra-thin bezel, stylised lugs and round caseback. Look closely and you will appreciate the interplay of details as satin-brushed surfaces alternate with polished chamfers – an aesthetic feat that can only be done by hand. Two-tone gold cases are a rarity at Audemars Piguet. Only eight out of the 550 complicated watches produced between 1882 and 1969 used two types of gold, and only one watch before 1978 had this exact combination of white gold and pink gold.
While mechanical watchmaking itself is an incredible work of engineering, openworking endows the product with an endless sense of awe. Such is the case for this Code 11.59 by Audemars Piguet Tourbillon Openworked on a slate grey rubber-coated strap with a white gold AP folding clasp.
