Conceived five years before the iconic Tank, the Cartier de Santos has, over the decades, been a defining watch icon for the Parisian jeweller. The 2019 Santos-Dumont is an understated, pared-down, authentic interpretation fitted to an alligator leather strap. The basic geometry, while greatly refined, remains unchanged.
Promoting the pure and symmetrical mirroring of the four corners of the Eiffel Tower, the Santos-Dumont symbolized the design revolution of the early 1900s when it ran countercurrent to the period’s accepted watch design codes. It is an early pioneer, highlighting straight lines and breaking ranks with the round cases of the time’s pocket watches.
The new Santos-Dumont takes the signature design codes like Roman numerals, visible screws on bezel, beaded winding crown sans crown guards and blue cabochon, and continues the legacy of the early watchmaking classic. It is cased in pink gold, pink gold and steel, or steel, in two sizes of 27.5 x 38 mm or 31.4 x 43.5 mm. With the heretofore-unseen six-year run-time, the high-autonomy quartz calibre is able to operate twice as long as traditional quartz watches. This is achieved with a reworked and resized movement with reduced energy consumption and a new high-performance battery – surely an undisputed counter-argument for quartz.
