ผลรางวัล GPHG ครั้งที่ 20 มีอะไรที่คุณควรรู้ เราสรุปไว้ให้หมดแล้วในบทความนี้

หลายคนเปรียบ Grand Prix d’Horlogerie de Genève ว่าเป็นเหมือนรางวัลออสการ์ของวงการนาฬิกาซึ่งจะว่าไปแล้วก็คือใช่เลย รางวัล GPHG จัดเป็นครั้งที่ 20 แล้วในปีนี้โดยเปิดรับนาฬิกาทุกสัญชาติจากทั่วโลก โดยมีข้อแม้เพียงว่าจะต้องเป็นนาฬิกาที่วางตลาดหลังสิ้นเดือนพฤษภาคม ค.ศ. 2020 จนถึงภายในสิ้นเดือนตุลาคม ค.ศ. 2021 นาฬิกาที่เข้าชิงรางวัลต่างๆ นั้นอาจจะเป็นการเสนอชื่อโดยตรงจากทางแบรนด์ผู้ผลิต หรือเป็นการเสนอชื่อโดยคณะผู้ทรงคุณวุฒิแห่ง GPHG Academy ก็ได้ โดยหากเป็นกรณีหลังนั้นทาง GPHG ก็จะต้องนำเรื่องไปแจ้งกับทางแบรนด์นาฬิกาเพื่อให้ตัดสินใจว่าตนอยากส่งนาฬิการุ่นนั้นเข้าประกวดด้วยหรือไม่ ทั้งนี้ นาฬิกาหนึ่งแบรนด์สามารถส่งนาฬิกาเข้าประกวดได้ไม่เกิน 7 รุ่นใน 14 รางวัลของรายการ
ขั้นตอนต่อไปคือการที่สมาชิก GPHG Academy ทั้งหมด 500 ท่านร่วมกันโหวตนาฬิกาผ่านทางเว็บที่จัดทำขึ้นพิเศษเพื่อการนี้ การโหวตรอบที่ 1 นี้จะทำให้ได้นาฬิกาที่เข้ารอบชิงจำนวน 6 รุ่นในแต่ละรางวัล จากนั้นจึงเป็นการโหวตรอบที่ 2 ซึ่งประกอบด้วยคะแนนโหวต 30 คะแนนจากคณะกรรมการจำนวน 30 ท่านที่คัดเลือกมาจากสมาชิก GPHG Academy ทั้งหมดและได้สัมผัสกับนาฬิกาเรือนจริงทั้งหมดที่เจนีวา รวมกับคะแนนโหวตอีก 15 คะแนนจากผู้ทรงคุณวุฒิที่เหลืออีก 470 ท่านที่โหวตผ่านเว็บเข้ามา สำหรับรางวัลพิเศษต่างๆ นอกเหนือจากรางวัลหลักนั้นก็เป็นหน้าที่ในการตัดสินใจของคณะกรรมการ 30 ท่านดังกล่าวด้วยเช่นกัน
พิธีมอบรางวัล GPHG ปีนี้สามารถจัดอย่างเต็มรูปแบบได้อีกครั้งแล้ว หลังจากที่ปีที่แล้วต้องจัดแบบปิดที่ไม่มีผู้ชมเข้าไปร่วมลุ้นและแสดงความยินดี สถานที่จัดงานคือ Théâtre du Léman ที่เจนีวา โดยมีการมอบรางวัลไปทั้งหมด 19 รางวัลเมื่อวันที่ 4 พฤศจิกายนที่ผ่านมา เราจะไม่ไล่เรียงทุกรางวัลแต่ขอนำเสนอประเด็นที่คุณควรรู้เกี่ยวกับ GPHG ปีนี้เลยก็แล้วกัน
รางวัลใหญ่ตกเป็นของ Bulgari
รางวัลใหญ่ Aiguille d’Or สำหรับนาฬิกาที่ถือว่าเป็นสุดยอดในภาพรวมจากทุกประเภทของการประกวดตก และเป็นตัวแทนแห่งศักยภาพของวงการนาฬิกาในปีปัจจุบันตกเป็นของ Bulgari ด้วยนาฬิกา Octo Finissimo Perpetual Calendar ซึ่งเป็นหนึ่งในหกนาฬิกาที่เข้าชิงรางวัล Calendar and Astronomy แต่เดิม และยังเป็นนาฬิกาที่ขึ้นปก World of Watches Thailand ฉบับล่าสุดพอดีเลยเสียด้วย เห็นอย่างนี้แล้วก็อดสังเกตไม่ได้ว่านาฬิกาที่ได้รับรางวัล Aiguille d’Or ช่วง 3 ปีที่ผ่านมาเป็นนาฬิกาแนวอัลตร้าธินทั้งหมดด้วยความบังเอิญหรือไม่บังเอิญก็ไม่อาจบอกได้ (ปีที่แล้วนั้นเป็น Piaget Altiplano Ultimate Concept และเมื่อปี ค.ศ. 2019 เป็น Audemars Piguet Royal Oak Selfwinding Perpetual Calendar Ultra-Thin)
Louis Vuitton, Piaget และ MB&F คือ 3 แบรนด์ที่คว้า 2 รางวัลในปีนี้
GPHG ปีนี้มี 3 แบรนด์ที่คว้า 2 รางวัล ได้แก่ Louis Vuitton ซึ่งได้รางวัล Diver’s Watch Prize ด้วยนาฬิกา Tambour Street Diver Skyline Blue และรางวัลพิเศษ Audacity Prize ด้วยนาฬิกา Tambour Carpe Diem (เดี๋ยวเราพูดเรื่องรางวัลนี้ต่อในช่วงต่อไปของบทความ) ทางด้าน Piaget นั้นได้รางวัล Mechanical Exception Watch Prize ด้วยนาฬิกา Altiplano Ultimate Automatic และรางวัล Ladies’ Watch Prize ด้วยนาฬิกา Limelight Gala Precious Rainbow สุดท้ายคือ MB&F ซึ่งได้รางวัล Men’s Complication Watch Prize ด้วยนาฬิกา LMX Titanium และรางวัล Artistic Crafts Watch Prize ด้วยนาฬิกา LM SE Eddy Jaquet “Around the World in Eighty Days”
Grand Seiko และ CIGA Design คือสองแบรนด์เอเชียที่ได้รับรางวัลในปีนี้
Grand Seiko เคยได้รับรางวัลในรายการ Grand Prix d’Horlogerie de Genève มาแล้วในอดีต และในปีนี้ก็ได้รางวัลใหม่คือ Men’s Watch Prize ด้วยนาฬิกา Hi-Beat 36000 80 Hours ที่ใช้เครื่องคาลิเบอร์ 9SA5 ซึ่งก็คือรุ่นที่หลายคนเรียกติดปากว่ารุ่นไวท์เบิร์ชหรือรุ่นชิราคาบะตามลวดลายเปลือกไม้บนพื้นหน้าปัด แบรนด์จากทวีปเอเชียอีกแบรนด์ที่ได้รับรางวัลก็คือ CIGA Design ซึ่งเป็นการสร้างประวัติศาสตร์ให้ในฐานะแบรนด์นาฬิกาจีนแบรนด์แรกที่ได้รับรางวัล GPHG สาขาของรางวัลที่ได้ก็คือ Challenge Watch Prize สำหรับนาฬิกาที่มีราคาขายไม่เกิน 3,500 ฟรังก์สวิส นาฬิกาที่ทำให้ CIGA Design ได้รับรางวัลนี้มีชื่อว่า Blue Planet หน้าปัดมีลักษณะเป็นลูกโลก บอกชั่วโมงด้วยสัญลักษณ์รูปเข็มทิศ และอ่านค่านาทีจากวงแหวนที่ล้อมรอบลูกโลกไว้อีกทีหนึ่ง
คณะกรรมการออกรางวัลพิเศษครบตามที่วางแผนไว้
GPHG ประกาศไว้ตั้งแต่ต้นปีว่ามีรางวัลพิเศษเตรียมไว้ออกตามดุลยพินิจของคณะกรรมการทั้งหมด 4 รางวัล หมายความว่าอาจจะออกหรืออาจจะไม่ออกก็ได้ แล้วแต่ความเหมาะสมของนาฬิกาที่เข้าประกวด แต่ในท้ายที่สุดก็ออกครบทุกรางวัล ได้แก่ Audacity Prize เพื่อส่งเสริมความกล้าคิดกล้าสร้างสรรค์ในวงการนาฬิกา รางวัลนี้ตกเป็นของ Louis Vuitton Tambour Carpe Diem
รางวัล Innovation Prize สำหรับนาฬิกาที่เบิกทางสู่ความเป็นไปได้ใหม่ๆ ในศาสตร์แห่งการประดิษฐ์นาฬิกาตกเป็นของ Bernhard Lederer Central Impulse Chronometer และรางวัลที่สามที่มีชื่อว่า Horological Revelation Prize เป็นรางวัลสำหรับนาฬิกาที่ออกแบบและผลิตโดยแบรนด์ที่มีอายุไม่เกิน 10 ปี นาฬิกาที่ชนะรางวัลนี้คือ Furlan Marri MR. Grey Ref. 1041-A นาฬิกาโครโนกราฟแบบสองวงดีไซน์สไตล์วินเทจในราคาเบาๆ ที่ตอบโจทย์ความต้องการของคนเล่นนาฬิกาได้อย่างเหลือเชื่อ
สุดท้ายคือรางวัล Special Jury Prize ที่มีไว้สำหรับ “บุคคล สถาบันหรือโครงการที่มีส่วนสำคัญในการส่งเสริมให้เกิดงานประดิษฐ์นาฬิกาชั้นสูง” รางวัลนี้ไม่สามารถมอบให้กับนาฬิกาหรือแบรนด์นาฬิกาได้ ที่ผ่านมาที่เราเห็นแต่บุคคลเท่านั้นที่ได้รับรางวัลนี้ แต่ในปีนี้ Special Jury Prize ตกเป็นของงานนาฬิกา Dubai Watch Week ซึ่งเราเคยเล็งว่าจะไปแต่ติดเรื่องโควิดเสียก่อน ไม่แน่เราอาจจะได้ไปในอนาคตเช่นปีหน้า ไว้จบ Watches and Wonders Geneva แล้วค่อยว่ากันว่าโลกเราในเวลานั้นจะเป็นอย่างไร

The 20th edition of the Grand Prix d’Horlogerie de Genève was celebrated in person once again.

The Grand Prix d’Horlogerie de Genève is often described as the Oscars of the watch industry. The analogy is quite fitting indeed as the GPHG is as respected as it is anticipated. For the 20th edition, the program was open to watches from around the world, provided that they are commercialized from after May 2020 to end of October 2021. Watches are submitted either directly by the brands or through the proposal of the GPHG Academy in which case the watch brands must decide whether or not to proceed with the entries. One watch brand can have as many as seven watches entered in the 14 categories of the competition.
All 500 GPHG Academy members took part in the first round of voting on the program’s secure digital platform. This process produced nomination of six watches for each of the categories. For the second round of voting, a jury of 30 members selected from the GPHG Academy met in Geneva to evaluate all nominated watches in person in order to cast their second ballot. These 30 jury votes were then combined with the online ballots from the remaining 470 GPHG Academy members which represented 15 votes in total. The jury also decided the four discretionary prizes outside of the permanent prizes.
After the most unusual year when prizes were awarded in a closed ceremony due to health restrictions, GPHG returned this year to Théâtre du Léman in Geneva with fanfare and full attendance on 4 November. A total of 19 prizes were presented this year. We will not go through them one by one. Instead, we will bring to your attention some of the notable takeaways from this year’s edition of GPHG.
Bulgari won big
The Aiguille d’Or went to Bulgari for their Octo Finissimo Perpetual Calendar. This grand prize is intended for the best overall watch from all of the categories. According to the GPHG rules, the winner is deemed “the most representative of the watch industry as a whole”. The Bulgari Octo Finissimo Perpetual Calendar was originally one of the six nominated in the Calendar and Astronomy category. It happened to be the cover watch for our September 2021 print issue of World of Watches Thailand as well. We took note also that this is the third year in a row where the Aiguille d’Or winning watch is an ultra-thin watch. The prize was awarded to Piaget Altiplano Ultimate Concept last year and Audemars Piguet Royal Oak Selfwinding Perpetual Calendar Ultra-Thin the year before.
Louis Vuitton, Piaget and MB&F won twice
Three brands won two prizes this year. Louis Vuitton was awarded the Diver’s Watch Prize for their Tambour Street Diver Skyline Blue and the discretionary Audacity Prize for their Tambour Carpe Diem (a bit more on this below). Piaget secured the Mechanical Exception Watch Prize with their Altiplano Ultimate Automatic and the Ladies’ Watch Prize with the Limelight Gala Precious Rainbow. Similarly, MB&F won the Men’s Complication Watch Prize with their LMX Titanium and the Artistic Crafts Watch Prize with the LM SE Eddy Jaquet “Around the World in Eighty Days” watch.
Two Asian brands made great stride
Grand Seiko is not a stranger to Grand Prix d’Horlogerie de Genève. This year, their score is the Men’s Watch Prize with the Hi-Beat 36000 80 Hours watch with Caliber 9SA5, commonly referred to as the white birch or Shirakaba for the nature-inspired texture on the dial. Another Asian brand with a win this year is CIGA Design – the first Chinese watch brand to have been awarded a GPHG Prize. Theirs is the Challenge Watch Prize for a timepiece retailing at or under CHF 3,500. The CIGA Design Blue Planet watch is characteristic for its depiction of the globe on the dial. The mariner symbol points to the hour and the minute is read off the minute chapter ring.
New discretionary prizes are awarded
The GPHG has proposed earlier that there were going to be four prizes awarded at the discretion of the jury who would decide if there were grounds for the award in 2021. All four prizes were awarded eventually. The Audacity Prize meant to foster creative audacity went to the Louis Vuitton Tambour Carpe Diem watch.
The Innovation Prize for a watch that opens up new development pathways for the watchmaking art was won by the Bernhard Lederer Central Impulse Chronometer. The third one, the Horological Revelation Prize for a competing watch created by a brand younger than 10 years, was presented to the nascent brand Furlan Marri whose MR. Grey Ref. 1041-A captured fulfilled the needs of watch collectors in the market for accessible but impeccably styled retro bicompax chronograph watches.
Lastly, there is the Special Jury Prize for “a personality, institution or initiative that has played a fundamental role in promoting high-quality watchmaking”. This prize cannot be won by a watch or a watch brand. The winners in the previous years were individuals. For the 2021 edition, the Special Jury Prize was won by Dubai Watch Week. We have always been observing the show from a distance and then Covid got in the way before we could attend it in person. Maybe next year. For the time being, we hope the above summary gives you a quick insight into the latest edition of the watch industry’s most prestigious award program!
