The world’s most luxurious watch fair impresses with shapes, functions and more.

A recurring exhibition each year in January in Geneva, SIHH or Salon International de la Haute Horlogerie is essentially one of the world’s most luxurious watch fairs. This year edition saw as many as 35 brands showcasing their very best novelties from 14 to 17 January. We pick five of them to represent what we feel are timepieces with the most impressive complications, the most unusual functionality, the most unexpected presentation, the freshest design and the greatest deviation from the norm.
Let’s begin with the extravagance of the Jaeger-LeCoultre Master Grande Tradition Gyrotourbillon Westminster Perpétuel. This exceptional creation is an engineering marvel, first with the gyrotoubillon or a multi-axis tourbillon which promises improved accuracy. The perpetual calendar indicates the day, the date and the month around the guilloche dial with deep blue translucent enamel on top of it. Nestled at the very heart of the dial is the 4-digit year indication: a feature hardly found in other watches. The watch is given the Westminster suffix because of the way its minute repeater mechanism was designed to produce the four notes of the Westminster chime like that of the Big Ben at the Westminster Palace in London. The hand-winding Calibre 184 with 50-hour power reserve is protected by a 43 mm white gold case that measures only 14 mm in thickness. Production of this watch is limited only 18 pieces.
When it comes to the most unusual functionality, the Swiss Alp Watch Concept Black watch wins hands-down. H. Moser & Cie. took their approach of minimalism to the extreme. Previously their “Concept” watches were without a logo and the hour markers. This one went one step beyond by doing away with the hands altogether. If not for the flying tourbillon at six, this timepiece can be easily mistaken for the popular smartwatch this case design made fun of in the first place some years ago. So, without hands, when you want to know the time, you must activate the slider on the left side of the case so the minute repeater can ring the hour, the quarter and the minute for your information.
Next is the most unexpected and the most talked about watch collection at SIHH 2019. It cannot be anything else but the CODE 11.59 from Audemars Piguet. The name of this collection hints at the future through the reference of the last minute before the new day. Swiss Alp Watch Concept Black, the CODE 11.59 appears to be another regular round watch. A close examination is required to notice the cleverly integrated details like the octagonal case middle that is hidden between a rounder top and bottom. The lugs nicely curve down to make it wearable by both men and women, and are hollowed out from the side to enhance aesthetic appeal. A most striking reference is the CODE 11.59 Perpetual Calendar in pink gold as it dazzles with the shimmering blue aventurine dial.
How about something simpler for a change? The watch without complication that we are interested to highlight is the Laurent Ferrier Galet Bridge One. The rectangular case is elongated and curved to correspond with the shape of the wrist. If you feel there is an architectural inspiration behind this, it is because Mr. Laurent Ferrier designed this case after a bridge near his childhood home in Geneva called Passerelle de l’Ile. To reinforce the nostalgia aspect of the watch, the sapphire crystal is given a tint, masking slightly the whiteness of the grand feu enamel dial with thin Roman numerals and markers. The two white gold hands of this watch are driven by a new hand-winding movement, designed to suit the rectangular shape of the stainless steel case.
The last watch we want to show lives in a world of its own. While most if not all of the watches at SIHH are mechanical by nature, the Élégante collection by F.P. Journe is an electromechanical hybrid that is powered by a battery. Its key feature lies within the power-saving mode where the hands will stop after 35 minutes of the watch being motionless. Timekeeping is maintained, however, and once movement is detected by the mechanical motion sensor at 4 o’clock, the hands are automatically resent to the correct time and the watch will be ready for use. This arrangement extends the life expectancy of a regular battery to at least 8 years. Élégante by F.P. Journe is available in 48 mm and 40 mm sizes for men and ladies. Case choices are titanium, gold and platinum.

ต่อกันเลยที่นาฬิกาที่มีฟังก์ชั่นแปลกที่สุดซึ่งจะต้องเป็น Swiss Alp Watch Concept Black จาก H. Moser & Cie. เท่านั้น เพราะว่าในครั้งนี้ Moser เลือกเดินสายมินิมอลแบบไม่มียั้ง จากเดิมที่ทำนาฬิกาที่ไม่มีโลโก้และหลักชั่วโมงในชื่อรุ่น Concept แล้ว มาในปีนี้ยังไปถึงขั้นไม่มีเข็มเลยด้วย บนหน้าปัดสีดำเงานั้นจะเห็นเพียงแค่ฟลายอิ้งตูร์บิยองทางด้านล่างเท่านั้นเพื่อบอกว่านี่คือนาฬิกาจักรกล ไม่ใช่สมาร์ทวอทช์ชื่อดังแบรนด์หนึ่งอันเป็นที่มาของตัวเรือนรูปทรงนี้ที่ Moser เริ่มนำมาล้อเลียนเมื่อหลายปีก่อน ในเรื่องของการบอกเวลานั้น Swiss Alp Watch Concept Black ใช้ระบบเสียงจากมินิทรีพีทเตอร์เมื่อคุณเลื่อนกระเดื่องทางด้านข้างซ้ายของตัวเรือน
สำหรับนาฬิกาที่คนคาดไม่ถึงที่สุดและเป็นที่วิพากษ์วิจารณ์กันมากที่สุดด้วยก็คือคอลเลคชั่น CODE 11.59 ใหม่จาก Audemars Piguet ซึ่งเมื่อมองดูจากภายนอกจะเห็นเป็นทรงกลมเหมือนนาฬิกาทั่วไป แต่เราจะต้องมองให้เห็นทุกรายละเอียดที่แฝงอยู่ก่อน ทั้งแกนกลางตัวเรือนที่มีรูปทรง 8 เหลี่ยมซ่อนอยู่ใต้ความกลมและขาตัวเรือนแบบเจาะทะลุจากด้านข้างที่ออกแบบมาอย่างดีให้โค้งลงจนนาฬิการุ่นต่างๆ ในคอลเลคชั่นนี้ใส่ได้ทั้งผู้ชายและผู้หญิง รุ่นที่สะดุดตามากที่สุดก็คือ CODE 11.59 Perpetual Calendar ตัวเรือนพิงค์โกลด์และหน้าปัดอเวนจูรีนสีน้ำเงินเงางามและเป็นประกาย และต้องบอกคุณด้วยว่าตัวเลข 11.59 ในชื่อรุ่นนี้เป็นการสื่อถึงอนาคตเพราะคือช่วงเวลานาทีสุดท้ายก่อนที่วันใหม่จะมาถึงนั่นเอง
มีนาฬิกาที่ซับซ้อนไปแล้วเลยอยากให้ได้ลองดูนาฬิกาแบบเรียบหรูกันบ้าง ปีนี้มีที่โดดเด่นคือ Galet Bridge One จากแบรนด์ Laurent Ferrier เป็นนาฬิกาสองเข็มตัวเรือนสเตนเลสสตีลทรงสี่เหลี่ยมผืนผ้ายาวและโค้งรับกับข้อมือ โดยเฉพาะอย่างยิ่งคือขาตัวเรือนที่บานออกอย่างสวยงามราวกับเป็นงานสร้างทางด้านสถาปัตยกรรม และก็เป็นเช่นนั้นจริงเพราะว่าคุณโลร็อง แฟริเยร์ผู้เป็นเจ้าของแบรนด์ได้ออกแบบตัวเรือนของนาฬิการุ่นนี้โดยมีแรงบันดาลใจมาจากสะพานชื่อปาสเซอแรลเดอลิลซึ่งอยู่ใกล้บ้านในวัยเด็กของเขากลางเมืองเจนีวา แซฟไฟร์คริสตอลของนาฬิการุ่นนี้มีการรมดำเล็กน้อยเพื่อให้ดูมีความย้อนยุคตามไปด้วย บนหน้าปัดกร็องเฟอเอนาเมลสีขาวมีตัวเลขโรมันที่ผอมบางรับกับรูปทรงของเข็มไวท์โกลด์ เครื่องนาฬิกาเป็นแบบไขลานซึ่งออกแบบใหม่ให้เป็นทรงสี่เหลี่ยมเหมือนกับตัวเรือนเลยทีเดียว
ขอปิดท้ายด้วยนาฬิกาที่สวนกระแสที่สุด เนื่องจากในงาน SIHH นั้นนาฬิกาจะเรียกว่าทั้งหมดก็ว่าได้เป็นนาฬิกาจักรกล แต่คอลเลคชั่น Élégante ของ F.P. Journe กลับเป็นนาฬิกาแบบไฮบริดซึ่งมีส่วนผสมของความเป็นจักรกลและไฟฟ้าในเรือนเดียวกัน ทำงานด้วยพลังงานจากแบตเตอรี่ แต่ Élégante มีลูกเล่นที่เป็นจุดเด่นอยู่ตรงระบบการประหยัดพลังงานซึ่งจะสั่งเข็มนาฬิกาให้หยุดเดินหลังจากที่ถอดนาฬิกาวางไว้เป็นเวลา 35 นาทีเพื่อประหยัดพลังงาน แต่ระบบก็จะยังนับเวลาอยู่ในใจต่อไป เมื่อใดก็ตามที่เราหยิบนาฬิกาขึ้นมาใส่อีกครั้ง ตัวตรวจจับที่ตำแหน่ง 4 นาฬิกาก็จะส่งสัญญาณให้เครื่องรู้ว่าต้องเดินเข็มนาฬิกาไปยังเวลาที่ถูกต้องอีกครั้ง ระบบนี้ทำให้แบตเตอรี่อยู่ได้นานถึงอย่างน้อย 8 ปีทั้งที่ไม่ใช่แบตเตอรี่พิเศษอะไรเลย ความสะดวกนี้มีให้สำหรับทั้งผู้ชายและผู้หญิงด้วยตัวเรือนขนาดใหญ่ 48 มม. หรือขนาดเล็ก 40 มม. วัสดุตัวเรือนมีหลากหลายทั้งไทเทเนียม ทองและแพลทตินัม
