The 33 mm watch was presented in 1962 to reject the idea of triskaidekaphobia.

This watch came to our attention during the “Game Changers” auction of Phillips in New York on 10 December 2019. Presented in a hardly-worn, totally unpolished and unrestored condition, the Lucky 13 watch came with an estimate in the range of USD 20,000-40,000 and was sold for an even higher sum of USD 62,500.

What was special about the watch was not the mechanics but the social and psychological trivial that led to its creation. It all had to do with triskaidekaphobia or fear of the number 13. If you think that is quite mouthful, try paraskevidekatriaphobia or fear of Friday the 13th! While the origin of these fears in the western culture cannot be determined with precision, it was troubling enough for a group of 169 gentleman belonging to the Anti-Superstition Society of Chicago, many of them prominent citizens, to prove that the fears were unreasonable.

To this end, they decided to hold a meeting every Friday the 13th. Their first gathering on Friday 13 December 1941 was described by Life magazine, “Each table seated 13. Upon each rested an open umbrella, a bottle of bourbon and 13 copies of a poem called The Harlot. The speaker’s table was strewn with horseshoes, old keys, mirrors and cardboard black cats. Before it reposed an open coffin with 13 candles.”

Fast forward to 1962, on Friday 13 April, 13 US senators gathered at the Anti-Superstition Society in Chicago. The purpose was to present this special watch to Colonel John Glenn who became the first American to have orbited the earth about two months earlier in his spacecraft capsule number 13 during the Friendship 7 mission. On the dial of this watch, all hour numerals were replaced by the number 13, which, according to the provided congressional record, was considered by Colonel Glenn to be his lucky number as well.

Ref. 3027 is a gold-filled, time-only wristwatch measuring 33 mm in diameter. It was not signed “Swiss made” because only the hand-winding Calibre K831 movement came from Switzerland – the rest of the watch was produced and assembled in the United States by the American subsidiary of Jaeger-LeCoultre. A portion of the proceeds from the 10 December 2019 sale of this watch was donated to The John Glenn College of Public Affairs at the Ohio State University.
