คุณแฮรี่ เฟน ผู้ชายที่ขลุกอยู่กับนาฬิกา Cartier Tank จนกลายเป็นอาชีพก็ว่าได้

คุณแฮรี่ เฟนจากลอนดอนเดินทางมายังกรุงเทพมหานครเพื่อจัดนิทรรศการร่วมกับ Theatre of Indulgence ของ Lotus Arts de Vivre ธุรกิจของแอนติคของเขาเองนั้นมีชื่อว่า Obsidian และสิ่งที่เขาเตรียมไว้เพื่อการนำเสนอที่โรงแรม Anantara Siam ก็คือนาฬิกา Cartier หายากจากยุคทศวรรษที่ 1920-1970 จำนวน 40 เรือน ทุกเรือนที่เขานำมานั้นไม่ได้โชว์อย่างเดียวแต่พร้อมขายด้วยเลยเพราะคุณแฮรี่เรียกตัวเองว่าเป็นพ่อค้า ไม่ได้เป็นแค่นักสะสมเท่านั้น
เราถามคุณแฮรี่ตรงๆ เลยว่าถ้าคุณชอบนาฬิกาพวกนี้แล้วคุณขายลงได้อย่างไร คุณแฮรี่ก็ตอบตรงๆ เช่นกันว่า “ขายแล้วได้กำไรนี่นา” เขาเล่าถึงเหตุการณ์ครั้งยังหนุ่มเมื่อตอนที่เพิ่งเริ่มก่อตั้งธุรกิจซื้อขายของแอนติคว่า “ตอนนั้นผมไปธนาคารเพื่อขอกู้เงิน ธนาคารบอกว่าขอถามอย่างเดียวเลย คุณเป็นคนที่ซื้อแล้วเก็บหรือซื้อแล้วขาย ผมตอบว่าซื้อแล้วขายครับ ธนาคารบอกว่าดีมาก อย่างนี้คบกันได้ ดังนั้นจะเห็นได้ว่าผมเป็นพ่อค้าแต่ไหนแต่ไรมาแล้ว ผมซื้อมาแล้วผมก็ขายไป แล้วผมยังชอบกระบวนการที่เป็นวงจรอย่างนี้ด้วย”
สุภาพบุรุษมาดศาสตราจารย์ผู้นี้ดูน่าเกรงขามทั้งในรูปและในคำบรรยายประวัติ แต่เมื่อได้พบตัวจริงแล้วเราก็รู้สึกคลายกังวลเพราะเขายิ้มง่าย เราพูดอะไรที่ดูมีความรู้เขาก็แสดงอาการรับทราบ เรารับสารภาพว่าไม่รู้อะไรคุณแฮรี่ก็ค่อยๆ เล่าให้ฟังแบบไม่ได้ยกตนข่มท่านแต่อย่างใด
ความทรงจำเรื่องนาฬิกา Cartier Tank ของคุณแฮรี่นั้นย้อนกลับไปได้ถึงปี ค.ศ. 1972 เมื่อเขาได้เห็นนาฬิการุ่นนี้บนข้อมือเพื่อนสนิทของเขาที่ในภายหลังเป็นหุ้นส่วนธุรกิจ Obsidian ด้วย เขาเล่าว่า “ผมจำได้เลยว่า Cartier Tank เรือนนั้นเป็นเรือนที่ผลิตที่ลอนดอนช่วงปลายทศวรรษที่ 60 หรือต้นทศวรรษที่ 70 ช่วงนั้น Cartier London ทำอะไรแบบนอกกรอบอยู่บ้างและออกแบบนาฬิกาเองโดยยังคงยึดตามลักษณะพื้นฐานของ Tank รุ่นก่อนๆ แต่เปลี่ยนแปลงอะไรในบางรายละเอียด เช่น เขาเอาขีดนาทีออกแล้วทำตัวเลขชั่วโมงให้ยาวขึ้น เมื่อคุณดูแล้วก็จะรู้ได้ทันทีว่าเรือนนี้มาจากลอนดอน”
นาฬิการุ่นเด่นอีกรุ่นหนึ่งที่เกิดขึ้นจากช่วงยุคสมัยนี้ก็คือ Crash เช้าวันหนึ่ง คุณฌอง-ฌาคส์ คาร์ทิเยร์เดินอยู่บนถนนบอนด์สตรีทเพื่อไปทำงาน เขาได้เห็นสภาพของรถประจำทางแบบสองชั้นชนเข้ากับรถแท็กซี่แล้วเมื่อเดินถึงบูติคก็คิดดูเล่นๆ ว่านาฬิกา Cartier Tank จะมีรูปลักษณะอย่างไรหากอยู่ในอุบัติเหตุเช่นนั้น ว่าแล้วก็เกิดเป็นนาฬิการุ่น Crash ที่มีเอกลักษณ์ไม่เหมือนใครมาจนถึงวันนี้
นอกจากนาฬิกาแล้วคุณแฮรี่ก็ยังตามเก็บ สะสมและขายสิ่งของอื่นต่างๆ ของ Cartier ได้แก่นาฬิกาตั้งโต๊ะ กล่องบุหรี่ ไฟแช็ค คัฟลิงค์ กรอบรูป หรืออะไรก็ตามที่ Cartier ผลิตช่วงปี ค.ศ. 1900-1975 ด้วย (เพราะหลังจากนั้นเริ่มใช้เครื่องผลิตมากกว่ามือแล้ว) อย่างในนิทรรศการที่กล่าวถึงนั้นเขาก็บอกว่าจะมีคัฟลิงค์ Cartier มาโชว์และขายด้วยมากถึง 11 คู่ แต่ในวันที่เราพบกันนั้นของยังไม่มา
สุดท้ายเราถามว่าคุณแฮรี่หวังอะไรจากนิทรรศการครั้งแรกในประเทศไทยครั้งนี้ ตอนแรกเขาก็ตอบแบบติดตลกสั้นๆ ว่า “หวังดังและรวยแล้วกัน” ก่อนจะตอบแบบจริงจังว่า “เอาจริงๆ ผมอยู่ในธุรกิจนี้มานานแสนนานแล้ว นี่คือการผจญภัยครั้งใหม่ เป็นประวัติศาสตร์หน้าใหม่สำหรับผม ผมดีใจที่ได้ร่วมงานกับครอบครัววอนบูเรนที่ผมสนิทสนมอยู่แล้ว ถ้ามารอบนี้แล้วขายนาฬิกาไม่ได้สักเรือนก็ช่างมัน ถ้าขายได้หมดเลยก็คงจะเศร้าหนักหน่อย เอาเป็นว่าขอให้ขายได้บ้างเป็นบางเรือนก็พอในช่วงเวลาที่ผมมาเยือนกรุงเทพที่เหมือนกับได้ทำงานและพักผ่อนในเวลาเดียวกันเช่นนี้”

Meet Harry Fane: the gentleman who made a career out of Cartier Tank watches.

Harry Fane from London is in Bangkok through collaboration with Theatre of Indulgence by Lotus Arts de Vivre. His antique business Obsidian was working with the Bangkok-based brand to stage a grand exhibition of classic Cartier watches from the 1920s to the 1970s, predominantly the Tanks, at Anantara Siam Hotel during 9 to 14 September. The pieces are from his collection but they are also for sale because he is not only a collector but also a professional trader.
Recalling an incident when he was younger and just starting his antique business, Fane shared, “When I was young, I went to the bank to ask for a loan. The bank said to me ‘We have one question for you. Are you a hoarder or are you a trader?’ I said ‘I am a trader’. And they said ‘We liked you’. So even from the earliest days, I was a trader. I do buy these things and I sold them. And I do actually enjoy the process.”
The scholarly gentleman came with the intimidating reputation of having solid knowledge in the matter of Cartier watches. Nevertheless, and to our delight, he was very friendly in person and willing to take the time to praise us for what we know and filled us in on what we did not.
Fane vividly remembers his first encounter with the Cartier tank watch in 1972. It was on the wrist of his best friend who later became his business partner in Obsidian. He shares, “The watch was a Cartier Tank watch. It was one of the ones made in London in the end of the 60s or the early 70s. That was the period of time when Cartier London went a little off piece and designed their own series of watches. Although they remain within the basic parameters of the previous Tank watches, they made some modifications; for example, they removed the chemin de fer train tracks for the minutes, and they elongated the numerals. When you look at it, you can immediately tell it is London.”
Another iconic timepiece born out of that same period is the famous Crash watch. Jean-Jacques Cartier was walking to work in the morning when he saw an accident on Bond Street between a London double decker bus and a taxi. He looked at the mangled machines, walked into the workshop and wondered what the Cartier Tank watch would look like had it been in a car crash. And, so, a new legend was born.
Apart from watches, Fane also finds, collects and sells other Cartier products like clocks, cigarette boxes, lighters, cufflinks, picture frames, or basically anything Cartier made from 1900 to 1975 (machines started to replace handmade work after his cut-off period). He said there would be 11 pairs of Cartier cufflinks at the exhibition but they were not on hand at the time of our meeting.
When asked about what he would like to accomplish with his premiere show in Bangkok, Fane gave a short, direct and joking answer: “fame and fortune”. On a more serious note, he said, “No, listen. I’ve been in the business for a long, long time. For me, this is a new adventure, a new page to turn. I am happy to do it with the von Bueren family who I love. If we don’t sell a watch, I couldn’t care less. If we sell them all, I would be very sad. Hopefully, we will sell a few during my working holiday in Bangkok.”
