Rado เป็นแบรนด์นาฬิการะดับผู้นำของวงการเนื่องจากมีการใช้วัสดุไฮเทคเซรามิกในการผลิตตัวเรือนและสายนาฬิกามาตั้งแต่ปี ค.ศ. 1986 ด้วยความตั้งใจให้ได้มาซึ่งเรือนเวลาที่สามารถคงความสวยงามได้ยาวนาน แม้เวลาจะผ่านไปหลายทศวรรษ วัสดุไฮเทคเซรามิกนี้มีความแข็งยิ่งกว่าสเตนเลสสตีลถึง 5 เท่า หากดูค่าตามสเกลวิคเกอร์สจะพบว่าไฮเทคเซรามิกมีค่าความแข็งสูงถึง 1,250 วิคเกอร์สจึงทนทานต่อการขีดข่วนจากการใช้งานปกติในชีวิตประจำวันได้ดี ไม่เพียงเท่านั้น ไฮเทคเซรามิกยังมีน้ำหนักเบากว่าสเตนเลสสตีล 25% จึงไม่ทำให้รู้สึกหนักข้อมือ และตัวเนื้อวัสดุยังไม่ก่อให้เกิดการระคายเคืองต่อผิวหนังอีกด้วยจึงเหมาะเป็นอย่างยิ่งสำหรับผู้ที่มีอาการผิวหนังแพ้โลหะ

Captain Cook เป็นชื่อที่ Rado เลือกใช้เรียกคอลเลคชั่นนาฬิกาดำน้ำของตนตั้งแต่ปี ค.ศ. 1962 ในช่วงที่แบรนด์ต่างๆ เร่งพัฒนาเรือนเวลาที่ทนทานและมีประสิทธิภาพในการกันน้ำลึก และถ้าถามว่ากัปตันคุกนี้ใช่กัปตันเจมส์ คุก นักเดินเรือชาวอังกฤษที่ออกสำรวจโลกในยุคศตวรรษที่ 18 หรือไม่ คำตอบก็คือใช่เลยครับ
ในปี ค.ศ. 2021 นี้เราได้เห็นนาฬิกา Captain Cook High-Tech Ceramic ขนาด 43 มม. ใน 4 เวอร์ชั่นด้วยกัน ได้แก่ เวอร์ชั่นตัวเรือนและสายไฮเทคเซรามิกสีดำแบบมีขอบตัวเรือนหมุนได้ทิศทางเดียวเป็นสเตนเลสสตีลปกติหรือเป็นสเตนเลสสตีลที่ผ่านการเคลือบสีโรสโกลด์ด้วยกระบวนการพีวีดี รุ่นที่ 3 ยังคงโทนความดำเข้มเอาไว้แต่เปลี่ยนจากสายไฮเทคเซรามิกเป็นสายยางสีดำแทน และรุ่นที่ 4 มีตัวเรือนและสายนาฬิกาผลิตจากวัสดุพลาสมาไฮเทคเซรามิกซึ่งเป็นอีกหนึ่งวัสดุลิขสิทธิ์เฉพาะของ Rado ที่ประสบความสำเร็จในการนำเซรามิกสีขาวไปผ่านกระบวนการพิเศษในเตาพลาสมาจนพื้นผิวแปรเปลี่ยนเป็นสีเทาเงางามคล้ายโลหะ โดยที่จริงแล้วในเนื้อวัสดุนั้นไม่ได้มีส่วนผสมของโลหะแต่อย่างใดเลย
Rado เลือกเพิ่มความน่าสนใจให้กับนาฬิกาดำน้ำรุ่นนี้ด้วยการใช้หน้าปัดที่ผลิตจากแซฟไฟร์คริสตอลรมดำ พอให้มองทะลุลงไปเห็นเครื่องนาฬิกาแบบจักรกลรุ่น Rado R734 ที่ทำหน้าที่ขับเคลื่อนเข็มทั้งสามได้ เครื่องนาฬิการุ่นนี้เป็นเครื่องแบบขึ้นลานอัตโนมัติที่ใช้แฮร์สปริงนิวาครอนซึ่งมีประสิทธิภาพในการทนทานต่อสนามแม่เหล็ก กำลังลานสำรองยาวนานเหลือเฟือ 80 ชั่วโมง และมีสัญลักษณ์รูปสมอหมุนบริเวณตำแหน่ง 12 นาฬิกาทางด้านหน้าปัดซึ่งเป็นหนึ่งในซิกเนเจอร์สำคัญของ Rado ทั้งนี้ นาฬิกา Captain Cook High-Tech Ceramic ใหม่ทุกรุ่นสามารถกันน้ำได้ถึงระดับความลึก 300 เมตร

Finally, the revived watch collection embodies all of Rado’s DNA.

Rado is an unsung hero of the watch industry. Their long-standing mission is to create watches of everlasting beauty. That is achieved with the development of high-tech ceramic for the production of cases and bracelets since 1986. The material is five times harder than stainless steel. On the Vickers scale, its hardness level is 1,250 so it boasts impressive resistance against surface scratches from daily use. Additionally, high-tech ceramic is 25% lighter than stainless steel so it is more comfortable on the wrist. It is also hypoallergenic and ideal for people whose skin is sensitive to metal.
High-tech ceramic is, in essence, a core DNA of Rado. This is why, when the Captain Cook collection was reintroduced in 2017 in stainless steel, many watch collectors expressed a heartfelt wish to see (and buy) the watch but in high-tech ceramic iteration. But for some reasons, Rado chose to ride on the bronze watch trend by offering the Captain Cook in that rustic alloy next. It is not until this year when the dive watch is presented in all of its high-tech ceramic glory.
Captain Cook is not a new name. Rado first called their dive watch collection by this name in 1962, at the height of the dive watch development craze, in honour of British explorer Captain James Cook who sailed the world in the 18th century.
For 2021, the Captain Cook High-Tech Ceramic in 43 mm size is offered in four variations. The first two are in black high-tech ceramic with a matching bracelet – the only difference being the unidirectional rotating bezel in hardened stainless steel or in rose-gold PVD coated stainless steel. The third one is monochromic but with a black rubber strap instead of the high-tech ceramic bracelet. Lastly, the fourth reference is produced with the case and bracelet in plasma high-tech ceramic. This other Rado proprietary material is in fact white ceramic which has undergone a special treatment in the plasma oven until it developed a metallic grey appearance without containing any metal at all.
Adding to the technical appeal is the black tinted sapphire crystal which reveals the skeletonised mechanical movement at the heart of these three-hand watches: the Rado Calibre R734. This self-winding movement, equipped with an antimagnetic Nivachron hairspring, offers a generous power reserve of 80 hours. It also features Rado’s signature rotating anchor symbol at 12 o’clock on the dial side. All Captain Cook High-Tech Ceramic watches are water resistant to 300 metres.
Once again, Rado made what was old young again, not only aesthetically but also materially. Once again, the Swiss firm has proven that they know how to appeal to the younger generation of watch buyers.
