อีกครั้งกับการจับเวลากีฬาโอลิมปิกโดย Omega ช่วงวันที่ 23 กรกฎาคมถึง 8 สิงหาคมนี้

วันนี้ที่รอคอย คือ รอมาแบบข้ามปี เพราะว่ากีฬาโอลิมปิกที่โตเกียวเจอพิษโควิดเข้าไปจนต้องเลื่อนการแข่งขันจากปีที่แล้วมาเป็นปีนี้ และถึงแม้ว่าสภาพบรรยากาศโดยรวมจะไม่เอื้ออำนวยนัก แต่ประเทศญี่ปุ่นก็พร้อมรับทัพนักกีฬาราว 11,000 คนจากกว่า 200 ประเทศซึ่งจะแข่งขันกันในกีฬาต่างๆ มาถึง 33 ชนิด
โตเกียว 2020 เป็นการแข่งขันกีฬาโอลิมปิกสมัยใหม่ครั้งที่ 32 โดยมี Omega เป็นผู้จับเวลาอย่างเป็นทางการ ทางด้าน Omega เองนั้นเริ่มทำหน้าที่สำคัญดังกล่าวมาตั้งแต่กีฬาโอลิมปิกที่ลอสแองเจลิสเมื่อปี ค.ศ. 1932 ซึ่งนับเป็นครั้งแรกที่กีฬาโอลิมปิกแต่งตั้งให้แบรนด์นาฬิกาแบรนด์ใดแบรนด์หนึ่งเพียงแบรนด์เดียวเป็นผู้จับเวลาอย่างเป็นทางการของกีฬาทุกประเภท โดยในครั้งนั้น Omega มีนาฬิกาจับเวลาระดับความเที่ยงตรงสูงจำนวน 30 เรือนเป็นอุปกรณ์สำคัญ ก่อนที่จะค่อยๆ พัฒนาอุปกรณ์อื่นๆ ในภายหลัง เช่น กล้องถ่ายภาพที่เส้นชัยในปี ค.ศ. 1948 อุปกรณ์จับเวลาว่ายน้ำแบบกึ่งอัตโนมัติเมื่อปี ค.ศ. 1956 และกระดานแสดงผลการแข่งขันแบบวีดีโอเมทริกซ์ในปี ค.ศ. 1976
แล้ว Omega ก็ยังคิดพัฒนาเรื่องอุปกรณ์ที่จะช่วยเพิ่มความแฟร์และความแม่นยำของการปล่อยตัวนักกีฬาด้วย ดังจะเห็นได้ชัดที่สุดจากนวัตกรรมสองชิ้น นั่นก็คือปืนปล่อยตัวแบบอิเล็กทรอนิกส์และแท่นปล่อยตัวนักวิ่งแบบมีลำโพงในตัวที่ทำงานคู่กัน เพื่อให้นักวิ่งคนที่อยู่ไกลจากปืนที่สุดได้ยินเสียงสัญญาณพร้อมกันกับนักวิ่งคนที่อยู่ใกล้กับปืนที่สุด และแป้นวางเท้าในแท่นปล่อยตัวนี้จะทำหน้าที่วัดน้ำหนักที่นักกีฬากดลงมาด้วยวินาทีละ 4,000 ครั้งเพื่อตรวจจับว่ามีใครออกตัวก่อนเสียงสัญญาณหรือไม่ Omega มีการใช้ระบบเซ็นเซอร์ที่คล้ายกันนี้กับกีฬาว่ายน้ำด้วยเช่นกัน และมีการพัฒนาหน้าจอนับรอบติดตั้งไว้ใต้น้ำเพื่อให้นักกีฬาได้ดูอีกด้วย
สำหรับการแข่งกีฬาโอลิมปิกโตเกียว 2020 ในครั้งนี้ Omega ก็ยังคงความพร้อมเช่นเดิมด้วยผู้เชี่ยวชาญด้านการจับเวลาจำนวน 530 คนร่วมกับอาสาสมัครที่ผ่านการฝึกอบรมมาแล้วอีก 900 ชีวิต อุปกรณ์ทั้งหมดที่ขนไปใช้วัดสมรรถภาพของนักกีฬานั้นมีน้ำหนักรวมถึง 400 ตันทีเดียว และ Omega มีความพร้อมในการจับเวลากีฬาชนิดใหม่ที่จะเริ่มเห็นกันในโอลิมปิกปีนี้เป็นครั้งแรกนั่นก็คือกีฬาปีนหน้าผา โดยนักกีฬาจะต้องแข่งปีนหน้าผาใน 3 รูปแบบด้วยกันแล้วเอาผลคะแนนที่ได้มารวมกันเป็นการจัดอันดับหนึ่งเดียว อย่างเช่นในการแข่งปีนเร็ว เมื่อขึ้นไปถึงบนยอดแล้วก็จะต้องกดแป้นที่ Omega เตรียมเอาไว้ ถือเป็นกีฬาโอลิมปิกชนิดที่สองที่นักกีฬาจะทำหน้าที่หยุดเวลาของตนเอง โดยกีฬาชนิดแรกที่มีลักษณะนี้ก็คือกีฬาว่ายน้ำนั่นเอง
โอลิมปิกครั้งต่อไปจะจัดที่ปารีสในปี ค.ศ. 2024 โดยจะมี Omega เป็นผู้จับเวลาอย่างเป็นทางการเช่นกัน ซึ่งที่จริงแล้วต้องบอกว่า Omega ได้รับการต่อสัญญาจากคณะกรรมการโอลิมปิกสากลตั้งแต่ปี ค.ศ. 2017 ให้จับเวลากีฬาโอลิมปิกไปจนถึงปี ค.ศ. 2032 เลย และเมื่อ 2 วันก่อนก็เพิ่งจะมีการประกาศอย่างเป็นทางการว่าบริสเบนจะเป็นเจ้าภาพจัดกีฬาโอลิมปิกในปีสำคัญนั้นซึ่งเป็นวาระครบรอบ 100 ปีแห่งการจับเวลาโอลิมปิกของ Omega ด้วยพอดี

Finally, the day has come for Tokyo 2020 to start. Despite the one-year delay and the overall lukewarm ambiance, this Olympic Games welcomes more than 11,000 athletes from some 200 countries who will be competing in as many as 33 sports.
Tokyo 2020 is the 32nd edition of the Olympic Games in the modern days, and it is the 29th time Omega serves as the official timekeeper. This legendary service began in 1932 when a single watch company was appointed as the official timekeeper of the game in Los Angeles. After that first timing with 30 high-precision stopwatches, Omega went on to develop a complete suite of devices over the decades. These included photofinish cameras in 1948, semi-automatic swimming timers in 1956 and video matrix scoreboard in 1976.
In addition to timing the perfect finish, Omega has brought forward innovations that ensure a perfect start of the races as well. The electronic starting pistol is the best example of this. Together with the speaker-integrated starting blocks, they ensure that the athletes here the starting signal at the exact same time, regardless of their distance from the pistol. The built-in sensor in the footrests of the blocks also monitors a false start by measuring the athletes’ force 4,000 times per second. Similar motion sensing systems are used in swimming as well, and the contestants now benefit from Omega’s underwater lap counters.
For Tokyo 2020, Omega is very well staffed and equipped as usual. A total of 530 timekeepers and professionals are joined by 900 trained volunteers. They will be using 400 tons of equipment to do their job: keeping the world informed of the athletes’ performances. One of the new sports introduced this year is climbing and Omega will be ready to time all of its three disciplines and combine the results as a single ranking. In the speed discipline, the athletes will have to hit the Omega climbing touchpad at the top upon reaching it. This is the second Olympic sport after swimming that the athletes will stop their own time.
The next Olympic Games will take place in Paris in 2024. As far as timing is concerned, Omega was awarded already in 2017 an extension of contract by the International Olympic Committee to serve in this important capacity until 2032. Coincidentally, only two days ago, Brisbane was announced as the host of the Olympic Games in that milestone year when Omega will be celebrating a centenary of Olympic timekeeping.
