World of Watches/Luxuo Thailand

Audemars Piguet

The immersive space is a perfect blend of century-old tradition and contemporary scenography.

Words: Ruckdee Chotjinda

The landmark project known as Musée Atelier Audemars Piguet began in 2014 when Bjarke Ingels Group won the architectural competition to expand Audemars Piguet’s historical premise in Le Brassus, Switzerland. Construction of the spiral-shaped glass pavilion is complete and it will open its door to welcome visitors from 25 June onwards. We talk to Heritage and Museum Director Sébastian Vivas on this and other relevant subjects.

What is it like to work for one of the most esteemed watch brands in the world?

It is a great privilege to work for Audemars Piguet, not only because the brand is doing well at the moment, but because there is a special spirit in this company, a sense of family which you probably do not find anywhere else. The people are passionate and can freely express their personalities. If you have a dream at AP, no matter how crazy it can be, with strong convictions and the ability to share it, there is a high chance that it becomes reality.

The project of the Musée Atelier is a perfect example. Sheltering our historical watches, as well as our best watchmakers in a building entirely supported by glass walls sounded insane, but the project of architecture firm BIG was so fascinating that the jury of the architecture competition fell in love with it. The direction of the company supported it during seven years, until its achievement in 2020.

How did you balance the need to satisfy the more mature conservative and to engage younger newcomers?

Your question is interesting because it shows that our conceptualisation process has been somehow unconventional. Instead of defining categories of visitors, we have decided to offer the best of who we are. We have aimed to express the most important facets of our brand – its history, craftmanship, passion for mechanics and design, its free spirit and, of course, its people – in the most exciting and interesting way.

Based on that, we hope that everyone, from the most experienced watch collectors to amateurs of architecture and tourists discovering our beautiful region, wherever they come from and whatever their age is, finds something that will move them. We hope that they say “wow” a few times and experience something surprising and memorable.

You have been with Audemars Piguet for eight years now. What has changed and what has not in this short time in the larger scheme of the brand’s heritage?

I first would like to pay tribute to my predecessor Martin K. Wehrli, who has built an incredible collection of historical watches and who recently passed away. Since 2012, our company has grown and I have had the chance to build the Heritage Department team, which comprises historians, archivists and specialists whose work has deeply enriched our knowledge of Audemars Piguet’s history.

Since 2013, the Restoration Atelier has been part of our department. This has been a major step, as it has given more visibility to the craftspeople who perpetuate traditional watchmaking. This mission is at the heart of our company. We need to preserve the technical skills and pass them on to the next generations, to not only service, repair and restore the watches of yesterday, but also the watches of tomorrow.

Which aspect of AP history do you find most appealing?

Today, Audemars Piguet is a quite famous and large brand, employing more than 2,000 people in Le Brassus and around the world. When I started studying AP’s history, my first surprise was to discover that it had been a very small company for over a century. Until 1951, it only employed an average of 20 people. My second surprise was to find out that, during this period, every watch produced was a unique piece.

This is due to the strong personality of the two founders, Jules Louis Audemars and Edward Auguste Piguet, who decided in 1875 to perpetuate the établissage system: a dense network of highly skilled independent workshops, each one specialized in a part of the watch, and combining their talents to create extraordinary watches. To my surprise, these masterpieces made in this tiny isolated valley were distributed in the world’s largest capitals and that already in the 19th century.

Is there a vintage Audemars Piguet watch you wish you could wear on a regular basis?

There are plenty of them! It might not look very original, but I love the legendary perpetual calendar, reference 5516, the first example of which was sold to Thailand and still belongs to a great friend of the brand in Bangkok. While its design is extremely well balanced and its dial incredibly expressive, its mechanical content opened a new chapter in the history of astronomical watches.

I am also a fan of pre-model 1533 from 1943, which has inspired the aesthetics of the recently launched [Re]master01, another great project to which the Heritage Department has contributed. I had the opportunity to wear the original watch at some occasions. I have to admit that, although it is now perfectly highlighted in its Musée Atelier showcase, I may take it away discreetly in the future, to wear it for a very special moment (why not for my 50th birthday) – but don’t tell it too loudly. On a daily basis, I wear my personal Royal Oak 15300, not yet vintage, but already classical, and highly coveted.
