แล้วก็ปรากฏว่าสิ่งน่าสนใจเหล่านี้นี่เองที่มีความเกี่ยวโยงกับผลิตภัณฑ์อื่นๆ ที่ Longines นำเสนอในปีต่อๆ มา ถ้าวงการนี้มีการมอบรางวัลประจำปีให้กับแบรนด์นาฬิกาที่สามารถเฟ้นหาดีไซน์เก่าในอดีตที่โดดเด่นหรือมีความหมายกับบริษัทเพื่อนำมาทำใหม่ในรูปแบบร่วมสมัย เราจะขอเสนอชื่อ Longines เป็นแบรนด์แรกทันที และ Longines Pilot Majetek บนปกนิตยสารฉบับนี้ของเราก็เป็นอีกหนึ่งตัวอย่างของการนำดีไซน์เก่ากลับมาผลิตใหม่ และเป็นดีไซน์ที่เราได้รู้จักประสบการณ์ของเราที่พิพิธภัณฑ์ของ Longines ด้วยเช่นกัน

นาฬิกาที่เป็นต้นแบบของ Pilot Majetek รุ่นใหม่ของปีนี้เป็นนาฬิกาที่มีชื่อเรียกว่า Longines Reference 3582 และสั่งผลิตเมื่อปี ค.ศ. 1935 โดยกองบินเชคโกสโลวักภายใต้กองทัพบกเชคโกสโลวัก บนฝาหลังมีแกะสลักคำว่า “Majetek Vojenske Spravy” ซึ่งแปลตรงตัวได้ว่า “ทรัพย์สินของกองทัพบกเชคโกสโลวัก” ตัวเรือนของ Longines Reference 3582 มีรูปทรงคุชชั่นดูแปลกตา และมีขอบตัวเรือนแบบหมุนได้พร้อมเครื่องหมายกำกับเวลาแบบเรืองแสง Longines จดทะเบียนดีไซน์นี้กับสำนักงานทรัพย์สินทางอุตสาหกรรมระดับนานาชาติที่กรุงเบิร์นเมื่อวันที่ 1 เมษายน ค.ศ. 1935 และมีการผลิตนาฬิการุ่นนี้ในหลายซีรีส์โดยใช้เครื่องหลายรุ่นในช่วงระยะเวลานั้นซึ่งตรงกับสงครามโลกครั้งที่ 2 จากปี ค.ศ. 1939-1945 ทำให้ Reference 3582 มีสถานะเป็นนาฬิกาผ่านศึกด้วยโดยปริยาย
นาฬิกาเพื่อการใช้งานเฉพาะทางอย่างเช่น Reference 3582 มักจะเป็นที่สนใจของผู้ซื้อในวงกว้างกว่ากลุ่มผู้ใช้งานเริ่มแรกที่วางแผนไว้ บุคคลทั่วไปที่ต้องการนาฬิกาที่ทนทาน พึ่งพาได้และแสดงค่าเวลาชัดเจนก็ใช้ประโยชน์จากนาฬิกาลักษณะนี้ได้โดยที่ไม่ต้องเป็นนักบิน แต่นาฬิการุ่นดั้งเดิมนั้นก็ไม่ได้มีจำนวนมากมายอะไร และนักสะสมนาฬิกาในยุคสมัยนี้ที่สนใจก็ต้องไปตามหากับร้านนาฬิกาวินเทจหรือสำนักประมูลทั้งหลายเอาเอง
แต่ถ้าคุณเพียงแค่ต้องการดีไซน์นั้นโดยที่ไม่ต้องเป็นนาฬิกาวินเทจที่ผลิตในยุคนั้นจริงๆ Longines ก็มีฉบับรีเมคของ Reference 3582 พร้อมขายคุณแล้ว แถมยังมีการปรับแต่งรายละเอียดทางด้านเทคนิคให้เป็นไปตามรูปแบบและมาตรฐานในยุคปัจจุบันอีกด้วย
ที่ต้องคงอยู่อย่างแน่นอนก็คือตัวเรือนรูปทรงคุชชั่น แต่ว่าในเรื่องสัดส่วนนั้นก็มีการปรับแต่งให้เหมาะสมกับยุคปัจจุบัน โดยเฉพาะอย่างยิ่งขาตัวเรือนที่ดูกลมกลืนไปกับแนวด้านข้างตัวเรือนขนาด 43 มม. นี้มากขึ้น ด้านบนมีขอบตัวเรือนแบบเซาะร่องที่หมุนได้และมีเครื่องหมายกำกับเวลาทรงสามเหลี่ยมอยู่ข้างในเพื่อใช้จับเวลา โดยที่ขอบตัวเรือนและ เครื่องหมายกำกับเวลานี้จะเคลื่อนตัวได้ในแบบอิสระจากแซฟไฟร์คริสตอลที่มีการเคลือบสารป้องกันแสงสะท้อนทั้งภายในและภายนอก แตกต่างจากโครงสร้างเดิมในอดีตของรุ่นปี ค.ศ. 1935 ที่คริสตอลจะหมุนไปด้วยกันกับเครื่องหมายกำกับเวลาและขอบตัวเรือน ระดับการกันน้ำของตัวเรือนรุ่นใหม่นี้ก็สูงขึ้นด้วยเป็น 100 เมตร
Longines Pilot Majetek เป็นนาฬิกาที่ออกแบบมาเพื่อความชัดเจนในการอ่านค่าสูงสุด หน้าปัดสีดำมีพื้นผิวแบบด้าน ตัวเลขอารบิกสีขาวมีการเคลือบสารเรืองแสงซูเปอร์ลูมิโนว่าสีเรเดียมเก่าเพื่อให้ได้ลุคแบบวินเทจ ล้อมรอบหน้าปัดด้วยแถบนาทีสไตล์รางรถไฟสีขาวเพื่อความชัดเจน และหากคุณดูที่ภาพใกล้ๆ ก็จะเห็นด้วยว่าวงหน้าปัดเล็กของเข็มวินาทีนั้นนอกจากจะอยู่ในตำแหน่งที่เหมาะสมพอดิบพอดีแล้วยังจมลงไปในเนื้อหน้าปัดเล็กน้อยด้วย และที่เรารู้สึกว่าต้องขอบคุณ Longines มากถึงมากที่สุดก็คือการที่ Longines ไม่พยายามใส่หน้าต่างวันที่ลงมาตรงนี้อย่างที่เคยทำเมื่อไม่กี่ปีก่อน ขอให้เป็นรีเมคแบบเหมือนออริจินอลแบบนี้จะดีที่สุด
รายละเอียดสุดท้ายบนตัวเรือนก็คือแถบป้ายประดับบริเวณ 9 นาฬิกาซึ่งระบุเลขปี ค.ศ. 1935 เพื่อเป็นเหมือนการบอกใบ้ให้ผู้ที่ได้พบเห็นทราบว่านาฬิการุ่นนี้มีที่มาจากช่วงเวลาหนึ่งในอดีต Longines Pilot Majetek ไม่ได้เป็นนาฬิกาแบบลิมิเต็ดเอดิชั่น แต่จุดขายสำคัญของนาฬิการุ่นนี้ก็ไม่ได้อยู่ที่จำนวนการผลิตที่มีจำกัดหรือการที่ของมีน้อย หากแต่อยู่ที่เรื่องราวและที่มาของดีไซน์เสียมากกว่าอยู่ดี

Few brands in the watch industry have what Longines has: an illustrious past translated into a promising future. Based in the distant valley of Saint-Imier in the French-speaking region of Switzerland, the company, readily identified through a winged hourglass logo, has been making marks in this trade since 1832 – their bicentennial celebration is only nine years away from now. Many of their historic successes could be attributed to the abilities to keep time accurately, and to mark the passage of time in a way that serves a specific purpose.
Longines maintains a private museum that is open to only the most dedicated fans, and even so, visits are on a by-appointment-only basis. We at World of Watches Thailand have been there twice before the pandemic to do our research for previous articles and videos. And while we were there with exact agendas in mind, we kept our eyes open to the peculiar exhibits that piqued our interest.
It turns out that many of those other things have intrinsic relevance to the novelties launched by the brand in subsequent years. If this industry had an annual award to be presented to a brand adept at going into the archives and breathing new life into selected models that served as milestones for the company, we would not hesitate to nominate Longines as the winner. Given our chance experience and encounters at Saint-Imier, we are now extremely delighted to be able to make that crucial connection between historic watch models and the new Longines Pilot Majetek featured on our cover.
Longines had devised and adapted ways to mark the passage of time since before the days of wristwatches. For example, the company was notable for timing athletic pursuits such as running and equestrian sports since the 1910s. In the early 1920s, Longines produced on-board clocks for aircrafts which featured a rotating bezel and a marker. As wristwatches began to emerge and gain in popularity, Longines designed some for pilots. These watches also inherited the rotating bezel with a luminous marker that the wearer could use to make a mental note of time since departure or to time each section of a flight. It was quick to use and read.
The Longines Reference 3582 served as the master plan for this year’s Pilot Majetek. Created in 1935 at the order of the Czechoslovak air force branch of the Czechoslovak Army, the watch bore an engraving of the words “Majetek Vojenske Spravy”, whose literal translation is “Property of the Czechoslovak Army”. Longines Reference 3582 also sported a cushion-shaped case, a set of specifications meeting the criteria of the ordering customer, and a rotating bezel with a luminous hour marker. The unique design was registered with the International Industrial Property Office in Bern on 1 April 1935. It was produced in several series with different calibres throughout its lifetime. Notably, those watches were used in combat during World War II from 1939 to 1945.
Professional watches such as the Reference 3582 tended to have a broader appeal than the originally intended target group. Civilians with a need for a robust, reliable and highly legible watch could benefit from such timepieces despite not being an aviator. Still, not too many pieces were produced back in the day and any contemporary collector who was interested in owning one must try his luck with vintage watch dealers or auction houses.
If you are reading this far into the story, we are sure you are one of the customers Longines would like to pitch the remake of the Reference 3582 to. Here, and now, the historic design is brought back to life with a few tweaks so as to be in line with today’s aesthetic requirements and technical standards.
The cushion-shaped case remains, but its proportions are revised, and the lugs are reshaped to be more streamlined and in tune with the profile of the 43 mm case. On the top of the case, a fluted rotating bezel system is coupled to an internal triangle marker which serves as the starting time indicator. The physical design of the bezel, marker and sapphire crystal with multi-layered anti-reflective coating on both sides has been improved significantly as well. Whereas the crystal had to move together with the bezel and marker on the 1935 model, the sapphire crystal is now fixed permanently as the bezel and marker change their position independently from it. The watch’s water resistance rating is a remarkable 100 metres.
Longines Pilot Majetek offers maximum legibility. On its matte black dial, white Arabic numerals are coated with SuperLuminova in an old radium colour to afford the vintage look, while a railway minute track in white encircles the dial to provide precise reading. If you look closely, you will notice that the small second subdial at six o’clock is not only well positioned in relation to everything, but it is also slightly sunken into the dial itself. And, thankfully, really thankfully from the bottom of our hearts, Longines did not try to give this reinterpretation a date window like they did at some point in the not too distant past. We are beyond pleased they chose to be faithful to the original!
Lastly, on the left side of the case, a commemorative plate with the designation 1935 can be seen near the nine o’clock position to give any onlooker a clue as to the origin of the watch. Longines Pilot Majetek is not a limited edition watch – it does not need to be one because its allure lies in its story and design, not availability or scarcity.
The 2023 Longines Pilot Majetek is powered by the self-winding L893.6 movement, produced exclusively for Longines. The calibre features a silicon balance spring that is resistant to magnetic forces, and offers a long power reserve of 72 hours. The entire watch head is chronometer-certified by COSC before it is delivered to the markets around the world. This is contrary to the normal practice over the years where only the movements were tested before casing, which left the door open for handling-induced discrepancies after the certification was done.
Wear this novelty in one of three styles to suit your look and adventure. The choices include a brown leather strap with beige stitches, a dark green leather strap with beige stitches, and a khaki green NATO-style polyester fibre strap made of recycled materials. You cannot go wrong with any of them, and we believe you will buy additional straps to play with the look anyway. Have fun!
