มูนเฟสเป็นฟังก์ชั่นในนาฬิกาจักรกลที่ดูชวนฝันที่สุดแล้วด้วยการใช้จานหมุนที่มีรูปดวงจันทร์บนฉากหลังสีน้ำเงินและหมู่ดาวระยิบระยับ เพื่อแสดงภาพข้างขึ้นข้างแรมของดวงจันทร์ตามที่ตาเห็นบนท้องฟ้าในแต่ละวัน ตลอดช่วงของการโคจรรอบโลกของดวงจันทร์ที่ใช้เวลารอบละ 29.5 วัน ฟังก์ชั่นนี้เคยมีความสำคัญกว่านี้ในยุคสมัยที่ชีวิตคนผูกพันกับฤดูกาลและธรรมชาติมากกว่าปัจจุบัน และยังมีเทศกาลสำคัญทางศาสนาหรือวัฒนธรรมที่ไม่มีการกำหนดวันที่แน่นอน หากแต่เปลี่ยนไปในแต่ละปีตามช่วงจังหวะของดวงจันทร์อีกด้วย

Master Ultra Thin Tourbillon Moon เป็นนาฬิกาที่มีรายละเอียดเล็กๆ น้อยๆ ให้เราได้ชื่นชม เริ่มตั้งแต่การแสดงค่ามูนเฟสที่ไม่เพียงจำลองภาพดวงจันทร์ตามที่เห็นจากซีกโลกเหนือด้วยจานหมุนเท่านั้น แต่ยังมีเข็มแบบสองปลายซ้อนอยู่เพื่อชี้แสดงภาพข้างขึ้นข้างแรมดวงจันทร์ตามที่เห็นจากซีกโลกใต้อยู่ทางซ้าย และปลายอีกด้านหนึ่งของเข็มเดียวกันนี้ก็ยังชี้บอกอายุของดวงจันทร์ด้วยตั้งแต่ 0 จนถึง 29 ½ วันไปพร้อมกันด้วย อีกหนึ่งจุดที่ถือว่าเป็นความพิเศษไม่เหมือนใครก็คือเข็มวันที่ เพราะหากคุณสังเกตสเกลตัวเลขจะเห็นว่าวันที่ 15 อยู่ทางขวาของตูร์บิยองและวันที่ 16 มาเริ่มทางด้านซ้ายของตูร์บิยอง นั่นหมายความว่า Jaeger-LeCoultre ต้องพัฒนากลไกพิเศษขึ้นมาเป็นการเฉพาะเพื่อเลื่อนเข็มไปข้างหน้าเป็นรัศมี 90 องศาเดือนละครั้ง ทั้งนี้ก็เพื่อไม่ให้มีแม้แต่วันใดวันหนึ่งในเดือนที่เข็มวันที่มาบดบังความงามของตูร์บิยองตรงจุดนี้ได้

The moon phase indicator is arguably the most poetic and sentimental complication in the mechanical watch industry, thanks to its graphical depiction of the moon and the starry night sky. It tracks the actual visibility of the moon as it orbits around the earth in a cycle of roughly 29.5 calendar days. The need to know this information harks back to the time when the life was more pastoral and connected to the nature. It was also useful to keep one informed of moveable religious and cultural feasts whose date in each year is determined by a particular full moon.
For the modern days, the Master Ultra Thin Moon from Jaeger-LeCoultre is the quintessential moon phase watch. In addition to the hands to tell the time, it proffers, at the six o’clock position, a recessed subdial for the moon phase window and a small hand that points to the date all around. The pink gold version of this watch exudes of warmth from the color and the texture of the eggshell beige dial. The 39 mm watch is rather dressy at the slimness of only 9.3 mm, which forces the self-winding Caliber 925AA to be even slimmer at 4.90 mm while still delivering 70 hours of power reserve from a single barrel.
Proving that they can be classical without being typical, Jaeger-LeCoultre has also added the Master Ultra Thin Tourbillon Moon to the range. As the name implies, the model features a tourbillon for extreme accuracy. This is the first time the moon phase indicator and the tourbillon are featured together in a Jaeger-LeCoultre watch without the presence of other complications like the perpetual calendar. The resulting look is thus sophisticated in a relaxed way with some empty space on the dial, unlike the four-subdial configuration of other haute horlogerie models.
The Master Ultra Thin Tourbillon Moon is rich with small details. While the moon phase disc emulates the phases of the moon as seen in the northern hemisphere like other moon phase watches, a small double-ended hand points to the depiction of the moon phases as seen in the southern hemisphere along the left side of this subdial, and the numeral age of the moon from 0 to 29 ½ on the right side. Another close look at the bottom of the dial reveals that the date progresses to only the 15th on the right side of the dial, then continues with the 16th on the other side. Jaeger-LeCoultre has thoughtfully developed a mechanism to control this eccentric monthly jump of 90 degrees just so that the date hand does not obstruct the beauty of the tourbillon on any one day!
Lastly, it is not possible to tell from the pictures, but the 41.5 mm case of the Master Ultra Thin Tourbillon Moon is made of a proprietary pink gold alloy called Le Grand Rose gold which promises higher resistance to fading over time.
