Jaeger-LeCoultre has long been an exhibitor at Watches and Wonders Geneva before the current name was adopted. For each year of the show, the manufacture would proffer a theme as the main storyline to give the most meaning to all novelties being presented, such as the astronomy theme that linked the various functions on the different watches last year. For 2023, the Golden Ratio serves as the encompassing theme for Jaeger-LeCoultre, reminding everyone of the perfect proportions seen in the rectangular cases of the Reverso watch ever since the 1930s.
We begin with the Reverso Tribute Small Seconds. A true descendant of the original Reverso watch with a reversible case that protects the crystal from impact and scratches while engaged in a polo match, the Reverso Tribute Small Seconds is a time-only creation in a pink gold case of 45.6 x 27.4 x 7.56 mm. Choose from the black sunray dial, the blue sunray dial or the burgundy lacquer dial.
As an option, the watch can be had in stainless steel as well, with a case dimension of 45.6 x 27.4 x 8.5 mm and an opaline silver dial. Both the stainless steel and pink gold versions are equipped with the same hand-winding Calibre 822 with a power reserve of 42 hours. And as we are not buying the Reverso to wear during an active sports engagement anymore, the solid caseback of the Reverso can then be engraved with each watch owner’s initials or a symbol of choice. The service is provided by Jaeger-LeCoultre at a cost corresponding to the difficulty of the work being commissioned.
If we are allowed to pick one favourite Jaeger-LeCoultre watch at the show this year, we would go with the Reverso Tribute Chronograph without hesitation. The reasons being that the Reverso collection in its rectangular form (that is, excluding the Squadra) has not had the chronograph function in over 20 years, and that the novelty is as delightful as it is practical. On the recto side, you enjoy the purity of the hour and the minute hands against the hour markers. On the verso side, you have the 60-second totalizer for the chronograph in the large circle that occupies the majority of the space, and a 30-minute retrograde minute totalizer towards the bottom of the dial, while the openworked design of the dial affords more than a glimpse into the intricacy and finishing of the movement below.
More importantly, the new Reverso Tribute Chronograph differs from the Reverso chronograph watches in the past in that the verso side with the chronograph now carries hour and minute hands as well – we are truly thankful for this ability to tell the time without having to flip back to the recto side. As a result of all the complexity, the hand-winding Calibre 860 in this watch comprises more than 300 parts while being able to fit into the 49.4 x 29.9 x 11.14 mm case with ease. The Reverso Tribute Chronograph is an intriguing watch with mid-level complication that is useful in daily life. Also, it is reasonably priced with the stainless steel version at EUR 20,000 and the pink gold one at EUR 35,000. They come with the blue-grey sunray dial that we have never seen on a Reverso, and the black sunray dial, respectively.
For watch lovers without a spending limit, we present the Reverso Tribute Duoface Tourbillon. This is the latest iteration of the Reverso Tourbillon watch introduced by Jaeger-LeCoultre 30 years ago in 1993. The dual-faced watch is distinguished by the tourbillon at six o’clock which harks back to the era of pocket watches. At that time, a solution was found to improve the accuracy of pocket watches by putting parts which were affected by gravity in a constantly rotating cage, thereby averaging out any deviation on a constant basis. For this modern creation, Jaeger-LeCoultre has successfully developed an extra thin tourbillion that comprises 62 parts while weighing only 0.455 gram. This, in turn, keeps the thickness of the hand-winding Calibre 847 to only 3.9 mm.
On the recto side, the Reverso Tribute Duoface Tourbillon’s silver sunray dial draws your eyes to the tourbillon below. On the verso side, the dial is partially open with a black sunray dial disc to indicate time in the second time zone per the Duoface concept of Jaeger-LeCoultre. The sun/moon indicator on the upper right corner serves to specify daytime or night time in that country. Any surrounding metallic surface is entirely engraved using a guilloche machine that is more than 100 years old.
