IWC กับยกระดับศักยภาพการผลิตถึงระดับสูงสุดเพื่อรองรับการเติบโตในอนาคต

หากไม่ใช่คนเล่นนาฬิกาแล้ว เมื่อพูดถึงชื่อเมืองชาฟเฮาเซนที่อยู่ทางทิศตะวันออกเฉียงเหนือของประเทศสวิตเซอร์แลนด์ ผู้คนก็จะนึกออกเพียงแค่น้ำตกไรน์ที่มักอยู่ในโปรแกรมท่องเที่ยวสวิสกันทั้งนั้น แต่ว่าช่างนาฬิกาชาวอเมริกันชื่อฟลอเรนไทน์ อาเรียสโต โจนส์ไม่ได้เดินทางจากบอสตันไปเพื่อถ่ายรูปกับน้ำตกชื่อดังนี้เหมือนคนทั่วไป ความต้องการของเขาเมื่อปี ค.ศ. 1868 นั้นคือการตั้งโรงงานผลิตนาฬิกาโดยใช้ไฟฟ้าที่ผลิตจากกระแสน้ำที่ไหลในแม่น้ำไรน์ในการขับเคลื่อนเครื่องจักรต่างๆ ของโรงงานอย่างมีประสิทธิภาพ และโรงงานแห่งนั้นก็ได้รับการตั้งชื่อว่า International Watch Co. หรือ IWC
IWC ประสบความสำเร็จอย่างรวดเร็วจนสามารถย้ายออกจากโรงงานแห่งแรกที่เป็นการเช่าไปตั้งอยู่ที่โรงงานถาวรช่วงราวปี ค.ศ. 1874 และ 1875 ซึ่งโรงงานแห่งที่สองนี้ก็อยู่ริมฝั่งแม่น้ำไรน์และยังคงเป็นที่ตั้งของสำนักงานใหญ่ของ IWC มาจนถึงวันนี้ หลังจากที่เครือ Richemont เข้าซื้อกิจการของ IWC ในปี ค.ศ. 2000 ตัวแบรนด์ก็เติบโตขึ้นอย่างมีนัยสำคัญจนต้องสร้างตึกเสริมเป็นปีกตะวันออกและปีกตะวันตกในปี ค.ศ. 2005 และ 2008 ซึ่งสุดท้ายแล้วก็ยังไม่เพียงพอต่อการผลิตให้ทันความต้องการของตลาดทั้งในขณะนั้นและในอนาคต IWC ต้องการโรงงานแห่งใหม่ที่ใหญ่กว่าเดิมมากๆ ซึ่งจะต้องตั้งอยู่ในเขตเมืองชาฟเฮาเซนด้วยเพื่อคงไว้ซึ่งประวัติเรื่องถิ่นฐานของแบรนด์
นับเป็นโชคดีของ IWC ที่ทางบริษัทสามารถจัดหาที่ดินแปลงหนึ่งที่อยู่ห่างจากโรงงานเก่าที่เป็นสำนักงานใหญ่ด้วยเพียงแค่ 5 กิโลเมตรเท่านั้น โดยที่ดินผืนนี้มีขนาดใหญ่เพียงพอที่จะสร้างโรงงานใหม่ที่สามารถตอบโจทย์ความต้องการทั้งในแง่กำลังการผลิต ประสิทธิภาพในการผลิตและความยั่งยืนของธรรมชาติได้เป็นอย่างดี การก่อสร้างใช้เวลา 21 เดือนด้วยเงินลงทุนทั้งหมด 42 ล้านฟรังก์สวิส จนในที่สุดก็สามารถเปิดใช้งานจริงได้ในปี ค.ศ. 2018 เพื่อให้ตรงกับการฉลองครบรอบ 150 ปีของแบรนด์พอดี
IWC Manufakturzentrum คือชื่ออย่างเป็นทางการของโรงงานแห่งใหม่นี้ และซีอีโอ คริสตอฟ เกรนเจอร์ แอร์ซึ่งเดิมมีอาชีพเป็นสถาปนิกอยู่แล้วก็มีส่วนร่วมในการออกแบบอาคารสไตล์โมเดิร์นที่ใช้กระจกและสตีลเป็นหลักแห่งนี้ด้วย โจทย์ของ IWC ไม่ใช่เพียงการสร้างอาคารที่เอื้ออำนวยต่อการทำงานอย่างมีประสิทธิภาพเท่านั้น แต่ว่าอัตลักษณ์ของอาคารจะต้องบ่งบอกถึงจิตวิญญาณของแบรนด์ในรูปแบบที่ไม่ต่างจากบูติคแห่งต่างๆ ทั่วโลกด้วย เริ่มต้นตั้งแต่บริเวณโถงทางเข้าที่มีเพดานสูงถึง 9 เมตร
อาคาร Manufakturzentrum แห่งนี้มีขนาด 62 x 139 เมตร และมีพื้นที่ภายในรวม 13,500 ตารางเมตรซึ่งสามารถรองรับพนักงานได้สูงสุด 400 คน ภายในอาคารมีแผนกที่เกี่ยวข้องกับการผลิตทั้งหมด ตั้งแต่แผนกรับวัสดุเข้า แผนกผลิตชิ้นส่วนเครื่องนาฬิกา แผนกผลิตตัวเรือนนาฬิกา แผนกประกอบเครื่อง แผนกประกอบตัวเรือน แผนกควบคุมคุณภาพ ฯลฯ โดยแผนกทั้งหมดนี้อยู่ในตำแหน่งที่ผ่านการพิจารณามาอย่างดีแล้วว่าสอดคล้องกับกระบวนการทำงานจริง และอยู่บนชั้นเดียวกันเพื่อความสะดวกในการดำเนินกิจการ การออกแบบของแต่ละแผนกจะดูมีความผสมผสานกันระหว่างการเป็นแกลเลอรี เวิร์คช็อปและงานแสดงทางด้านวิศวกรรม ทั้งนี้ก็เพื่อให้ผู้มาเยือนทุกคนไม่ว่าที่เป็นสื่อหรือลูกค้าสามารถชมการทำงานในขั้นตอนต่างๆ ได้โดยง่ายจากทางเดินสีเทาที่กำกับไว้ โดยทุกคนจะก้าวลงไปในพื้นที่สีขาวได้ก็ต่อเมื่อได้รับการอนุญาตหรือเชื้อเชิญเป็นการเฉพาะจากบุคคลที่ดูแลจุดนั้นอยู่เท่านั้น
โรงงานแห่งใหม่ของ IWC ใช้เทคโนโลยีชั้นสูงต่างๆ เพื่อทำให้สามารถผลิตชิ้นส่วนที่ต้องการได้อย่างรวดเร็ว หากจะนับเฉพาะชิ้นส่วนของเครื่องนาฬิกาก็มีมากกว่า 1,500 แบบแล้วเพื่อใช้ประกอบเครื่องรุ่นต่างๆ บ้างก็เป็นชิ้นส่วนขนาดใหญ่อย่างเช่นเพลทและบริดจ์ของเครื่อง บ้างก็มีขนาดเล็กเช่นลีเวอร์และสปริงต่างๆ และบ้างก็เล็กมากเสียจนแทบจะมองด้วยตาเปล่าไม่เห็นก็มี ซึ่งแผนกผลิตชิ้นส่วนเครื่องนั้นก็ย่อมต้องผลิตชิ้นส่วนสำหรับกลไกชั้นสูงอย่างตูร์บิยอง แอนนวลคาเลนดาร์และเพอร์เพทชวลคาเลนดาร์ด้วย และการชุบชิ้นส่วนหรือการแกะสลักใดๆ ที่ต้องทำก็จะทำภายในอาคารนี้แบบครบจบในที่เดียวเลย
โรงงาน IWC Manufakturzentrum มีการผลิตตัวเรือนนาฬิกาด้วยบริเวณชั้นใต้ดิน ตัวเรือนนาฬิกาของ IWC มีทั้งที่เป็นสเตนเลสสตีล ไทเทเนียม บรอนซ์ เร้ดโกลด์ ไวท์โกลด์ แพลทตินัมและเซราเทเนียมซึ่งมีน้ำหนักเบาเหมือนกับไทเทเนียมแต่ว่าทนทานต่อการขีดข่วนเหมือนกับเซรามิก หากชิ้นส่วนใดต้องมีการแกะสลักด้วยระบบจักรกลหรือระบบเลเซอร์อย่างเช่นตัวอักษรหรือรูปภาพบนฝาหลังก็สามารถทำในพื้นที่แห่งนี้ได้เลยเช่นกัน
การผลิตชิ้นส่วนเครื่องนาฬิกาและตัวเรือนนาฬิกาอาจจะเป็นกระบวนการอัตโนมัติที่ใช้เครื่องจักรเป็นหลักก็จริง แต่เมื่อผลิตเสร็จแล้วจะนำไปประกอบก็ต้องอาศัยฝีมือและความละเอียดของมือคนอยู่ดี IWC มีพื้นที่คลีนรูมใหญ่โตถึง 2,223 ตารางเมตรเพื่อใช้ทำการประกอบชิ้นส่วนต่างๆ โดยเฉพาะ นี่เป็นคลีนรูมระดับเดียวกันกับที่พบได้ตามโรงงานผลิตชิปคอมพิวเตอร์ขนาดใหญ่ซึ่งมีแรงดันสูงกว่าความดันบรรยากาศปกติ และมีการถ่ายเทอากาศมากถึง 50,000 ลูกบาศก์เมตรต่อชั่วโมงเพื่อลดโอกาสที่จะมีฝุ่นเข้าไปติดอยู่ในเครื่องนาฬิกา เป็นต้น
IWC ใช้ระบบการประกอบแบบเป็นไลน์ตามวิสัยทัศน์ของโจนส์ผู้ก่อตั้งแบรนด์ซึ่งคนรุ่นหลังนำมาพัฒนาต่อ หากเป็นการประกอบเครื่องนาฬิกาก็จะมีไลน์เฉพาะสำหรับเครื่องรุ่นต่างๆ เพื่อให้เกิดมาตรฐานคุณภาพสูงสุด และภายในแต่ละไลน์ยังมีการแบ่งขั้นตอนการประกอบเป็นช่วงๆ อีกด้วย เพื่อที่จะได้จัดช่างที่เชี่ยวชาญการประกอบชิ้นส่วนกลุ่มนั้นๆ ไปนั่งทำเป็นการเฉพาะ อย่างเรื่องตระกูลคาลิเบอร์ 69000 ที่ IWC ใช้งานในหลายคอลเลคชั่นก็มาจากกระบวนการผลิตเช่นนี้เหมือนกัน

IWC เริ่มผลิตนาฬิกา Pilot’s Watch Chronograph เป็นครั้งแรกด้วยรุ่น Ref. IW3706 เมื่อปี ค.ศ. 1994 ซึ่งในสมัยนั้นใช้เครื่อง Valjoux 7750 ที่นำมาขัดแต่งและประกอบใหม่ และนาฬิกา Pilot’s Watch Chronograph รุ่นอื่นๆ ที่ออกมาแทนที่ในช่วงปีที่ตามหลังก็ยังคงใช้เครื่องที่ซื้อมาจากข้างนอกเช่นนี้ จนกระทั่งเปลี่ยนมาใช้เครื่องตระกูลคาลิเบอร์ 69000 ในนาฬิกา Pilot’s Watch Chronograph เจนเนอเรชั่นปัจจุบัน เช่นเดียวกันกับ Pilot’s Watch Chronograph 41 TOP GUN Ref. IW389401 และ TOP GUN “Oceana” Ref. IW389404 ซึ่งเปิดตัวในงาน Watches and Wonders Geneva ปีนี้ที่ใช้เครื่องรุ่นคาลิเบอร์ 69380 และเป็นนาฬิกา Pilot’s Watch Chronograph ตัวเรือนขนาด 41 มม. รุ่นแรกที่มีตัวเรือนเซรามิกซึ่งเป็นวัสดุที่ IWC ริเริ่มใช้มาตั้งแต่ปี ค.ศ. 1986

เราปิดท้ายบทความนี้กันด้วยนาฬิการุ่นสุดท้ายที่เป็นอีกหนึ่งเครื่องพิสูจน์แห่งความเอนกประสงค์ของเครื่องตระกูลคาลิเบอร์ 69000 นั่นก็คือ Portugieser Chronograph Ref. To people outside of watch circles, the northeastern Swiss town of Schaffhausen is perhaps known only for Rhine Falls, which is included in most travel itineraries. American watchmaker Florentine Ariosto Jones from Boston came here, not to have his picture taken with the world-famous waterfall, but to set up a watch production facility where machines could be driven by the hydropower plant that harvested energy from the flowing waters of the Rhine. The year was 1868.
International Watch Co. or IWC quickly made a name for itself and moved out of a rental factory building into a permanent one between 1874 and 1875. This second site on the banks of the Rhine remains the company headquarters today. Following the acquisition by Richemont in 2000, IWC continued to grow so significantly that the East and West Wings had to be added in 2005 and 2008, respectively. Still, IWC did not have the capacity it needed to fulfil market demand and prepare for the future. A new and much larger site was required, and it had to be located in Schaffhausen as well, in keeping with the heritage of the brand.
Luckily for the company, a piece of land only 5 kilometres north of the headquarters was secured, and it is expansive enough for the new factory building to be developed in such a way that ensures all capacity, efficiency and sustainability requirements are met. Constructed over a period of 21 months at the investment cost of CHF 42 million, the new IWC Manufakturzentrum was inaugurated in 2018, coinciding with the 150th anniversary of the brand.
CEO Christoph Grainger Herr was trained as an architect so he personally contributed to the design of this new building, which is decidedly modernistic with generous use of glass and steel. The idea was not to have just a functional building, but one that encapsulates the spirit of the brand in the same way as their boutiques around the world, beginning with the awe-inspiring entrance lobby with a 9-metre high ceiling.
The Manufakturzentrum measures 62 by 139 metres and offers a gross floor area of 13,500 square metres, accommodating a maximum of 400 workstations. It unites all production operations such as incoming goods, movement component production, case production, movement assembly, case assembly, quality control and so on. Great consideration is given to how the various departments are positioned in a logical order on a single floor in order for the production processes to run optimally. Their design is a blend of gallery spaces, workshops and engineering trades; such a setup allows visitors, whether press or clients, to observe the work being carried out in the most comprehensible way possible. A grey walkway guides and reminds visitors not to stray into the shop floor area unless specifically invited to do so by a responsible staff member.
Sophisticated technology is employed to deliver the best quality in the timeliest fashion. The most advanced, computer-controlled turning and milling machines are used to produce some 1,500 components that go into the different calibres. These range from the larger plates and bridges to the smaller levers and springs and those parts that are almost not visible to the naked eye. They, of course, include parts for complications such as the tourbillon, annual calendar and perpetual calendar. Any plating or engraving work required is done next, under the same roof.
Case production also takes place here, in the basement of the Manufakturzentrum. IWC produces watch cases from stainless steel, titanium, bronze, red gold, white gold and platinum, as well as ceratanium – the IWC innovation that is as light as titanium and as scratch-resistant as ceramic. Machine and laser engraving capability is readily available to execute the required wording and design on parts such as the caseback, for example.
And while movement and case parts production is a largely automated operation, assembly is not – and this is where the skilful and careful human touch comes in. Assembly operations take place in the cleanroom area that accounts for a massive 2,223-square-metre space of the entire building. Similar to computer chip production facility, the work environment here is above atmospheric pressure, with 50,000 cubic metres of air being circulated every hour to minimise the chance of dust impairing a movement’s performance.
IWC uses the line concept for assembly, based on the visionary idea of F. A. Jones, the founder. Where movements are concerned, assembly lines are dedicated to different calibre families so that the quality standards can be maximised. And within each line, the process is broken down into multiple sub-processes to be carried out by a specialist with expertise in that particular function. This is how IWC movements like the workhorse 69000-calibre family are brought to life.
The 69000-calibre family marks the current generation chronograph movement of IWC. This in-house product was developed over a period of five years to offer a high level of robustness, precision and reliability through its integrated construction. This self-winding chronograph movement with a column wheel control and 46-hour power reserve was extensively tested during the development phase to simulate 10 years of wear and tear. For example, the rotor was turned several million times and the chronograph pushers were actuated 30,000 times.
Later on, in actual production, freshly assembled movements are fine-tuned over a period of 15 days when rate, winding performance, power reserve, chronograph function and date switching are evaluated, before a final check of 500 hours is carried out after the movements are cased up. Customers can then be assured of the highest quality possible when a watch leaves the door of the new IWC Manufakturzentrum in Schaffhausen.
Per the development plan, the 69000-calibre family is used across different watch collections at IWC. In its fullest version, it features an hour totaliser at 9 o’clock to enable timing of an event lasting up to 12 hours, as well as two windows for the day of the week and the date at 3 o’clock. This version is used exclusively in the Pilot’s Watch Chronograph range that has always been popular for its tool watch status, thanks to the technical arrangement of various dial elements that resemble cockpit instruments.
IWC first unveiled the Pilot’s Watch Chronograph Ref. IW3706 in 1994, using a reworked and improved Valjoux 7750 movement. Its successors over the years continued to use this trusted but externally sourced calibre until the introduction of the 69000-calibre family in the current iteration of the Pilot’s Watch Chronograph range.
The same is true for the two novelties launched at Watches and Wonders Geneva this year. The Pilot’s Watch Chronograph 41 TOP GUN Ref. IW389401 and TOP GUN “Oceana” Ref. IW389404 both use Calibre 69380, which belongs to this important family we have discussed at length. They are the first 41 mm Pilot’s Watch Chronograph models to be presented in ceramic: a material in use at IWC since 1986.
The TOP GUN Ref. IW389401 comes with a pitch-black ceramic case, a black dial and a black rubber strap in true TOP GUN spirit ever since the line was created by IWC in 2007. The TOP GUN “Oceana” Ref. IW389404 features the case and dial in a specific shade of blue that is inspired by the working overalls of the US Navy, matched with a blue rubber strap with a denim finish textile inlay. Both references have chronograph pushers, crown and caseback made of titanium.
On the other end of the product spectrum at IWC, the Portofino range encompasses classical and dressier watches. The 69000-calibre family works here too, mainly in the Portofino Chronograph 39 Ref. IW3915.
Measuring 39 mm in diameter, this refined timepiece effortlessly pairs the elegant Portofino design with the functionality of a chronograph with two subdials in a vertical layout where the minute totaliser remains at the 12 o’clock position for utmost practicality. One would be quick to deduct that the Calibre 69355 used is essentially the Calibre 69380 without the 12-hour counter and the day and date windows. The watch may look almost identical to the Ref. IW3914 it replaces, but the new reference can be quickly distinguished by the sapphire crystal caseback that affords a view of the calibre.
We conclude this article with the final proof of versatility for the 69000-calibre family. The Portugieser Chronograph Ref. IW3716 also uses the same Calibre 69355 as the preceding Portofino Chronograph. When it was introduced into the range, it also received the see-through caseback its long-time predecessor did not have. The Portugieser is one of the most loved collections at IWC because the smart casual personality gives it the ability to be as formal or as relaxed at will with those slim leaf hands and applied Arabic numerals. The chronograph version measures 41 mm in diameter, and is produced in either stainless steel or red gold with a selection of dial colours to choose from.
So many page scrolls and we have only talked about one family of in-house movements at IWC! This goes to show that the brand offers great substance. And with the new and highly efficient manufacture centre and 155 years of watchmaking heritage to leverage upon, IWC is in the best position ever to ride on the wave of growth in the watch industry, achieving success for many years to come.
