FIA Formula 1 เป็นรายการที่มีผู้ชมมากที่สุดในโลกรายการหนึ่งด้วยยอดผู้ชมล่าสุดเมื่อปีที่แล้ว 490.2 ล้านคน นับจำนวนผู้ติดตามทางช่องทาง Facebook, Twitter, Instagram และ YouTube ได้รวม 18.5 ล้านคน ในปีนี้ Formula 1 มีทั้งหมด 21 สนามในเมืองใหญ่ต่างๆ ทั่วโลก แต่จะมีพิเศษก็คือโมนาโคและสิงคโปร์เพราะจะเรียกว่าสองประเทศนี้ปิดเมืองให้นักแข่งประชันฝีมือกันบนถนนจริงเลย ไม่ได้แข่งกันในสนามเหมือนที่อื่นทั่วไป และที่เด็ดสุดของสิงคโปร์ก็คือว่าเป็นสนามเดียวในโลกของ Formula 1 ที่แข่งกันในเวลากลางคืนหลังดวงอาทิตย์ลับขอบฟ้าไปแล้ว
World of Watches/Luxuo Thailand ได้รับเกียรติจาก Rolex ให้มาชมการแข่งขัน Formula 1 Singapore Airlines Singapore Grand Prix ปี 2019 แบบใกล้ชิด ความวีไอพีนั้นมาเต็มเลยเพราะว่าเราได้เข้าฝั่งแพ็ดด็อกคลับที่ทีมต่างๆ มีโรงรถและอาคารพักของทีมงานอยู่ แต่ที่สำคัญกว่านั้นก็คือสิ่งที่เราได้เรียนรู้ขณะเดินสำรวจพื้นที่ต่างๆ ซึ่งถ่ายรูปได้บ้างหรือไม่ได้บ้าง ไกด์กิตติมศักดิ์ของเราคือเซอร์ แจ็คกี้ สจ๊วตซึ่งเป็นเทสติโมนี (หรือเรียกว่าแอมบาสเดอร์) ของ Rolex มาเป็นเวลานานถึง 51 ปีแล้ว เราได้รับฟังเรื่องราวจากวันวานมากมายจากท่านเซอร์ซึ่งเปรียบเทียบให้เราเห็นเสร็จสรรพว่า Formula 1 สมัยนี้พัฒนาไปถึงจุดใดแล้ว แต่ด้วยความที่ตัวท่านเองเป็นแชมป์ Formula 1 ถึงสามสมัยในอดีต เวลาเดินไปที่ใดก็จะมีแต่คนจำได้และขอถ่ายรูปด้วยมากมาย ทั้งนักข่าวสายยานยนต์และนักแข่งหรือลูกทีมต่างๆ ก็ดูเป็นกันเองไปอีกแบบ
ทีม Renault F1 กรุณาให้เราเข้าไปเดินทัวร์ภายในโรงรถขณะที่ช่างกำลังปรับแต่งรถทั้งสองคันก่อนลงสนามจริงด้วย ทำให้เราได้เห็นเบื้องหลังการทำงานที่เหน็ดเหนื่อย แต่ทุกคนก็ดูมีแรงและกำลังใจในการมอบผลงานให้ดีที่สุดเพื่อประโยชน์ของทีม เฉกเช่นเดียวกันกับเจ้าหน้าที่ของ FIA ราว 220 ชีวิตในฐานะผู้จัดการแข่งขันที่จะต้องทำหน้าที่ของตนอย่างแม่นยำและรวดเร็ว ไม่ว่าเขาผู้นั้นจะอยู่ในศูนย์ควบคุมการแข่งขันหรือห้องรับและตัดต่อภาพและเสียงเพื่อการออกอากาศสด (ห้องนี้สามารถแยกชิ้นส่วนและพับเก็บเพื่อย้ายที่ตั้งไปยังอีกประเทศได้ในเวลาเพียงแค่สามวัน) แล้วยังมีเจ้าหน้าที่ตามจุดต่างๆ ในสนามอีกมากมายที่ช่วยให้ผู้ชมได้เห็นทุกจังหวะแห่งความตื่นเต้นไปพร้อมกัน ในขณะเดียวกันก็ต้องดูแลให้นักแข่งได้รับความปลอดภัยสูงสุดด้วย ด้วยความเร็วระดับ 300+ กิโลเมตรต่อชั่วโมงและจำนวนหัวเลี้ยว 23 โค้งของสนามนี้แล้วไม่ต้องคิดเลยว่าอะไรก็เกิดขึ้นได้ทุกเมื่อ จึงถือเป็นเรื่องที่จำเป็นและท้าทายอย่างยิ่งที่เจ้าหน้าที่จะต้องตามให้ทันกับความไวของรถแต่ละคันด้วย
การแข่งรถไม่ใช่เรื่องของผู้ชายหรือคนหนุ่มเท่านั้น เราได้เห็นผู้คนทั้งชายและหญิง ทั้งเด็กและผู้ใหญ่จำนวนมากที่บ้างก็มาชมการแข่งขันกับเพื่อนฝูงหรือครอบครัว มีอยู่จังหวะหนึ่งเราเห็นคุณแม่กำลังถ่ายรูปลูกชายอยู่บนพิทเลน ทันใดนั้นเจ้าหน้าที่เฝ้าสนามก็วิ่งเข้าไปแล้วเอาหูฟังของตนใส่ให้เด็กน้อยแล้วยังคุกเข่าลงไปถ่ายรูปคู่ด้วยอีก เห็นแล้วก็อดยิ้มไม่ได้ แม้จะเป็นเหตุการณ์ที่เกิดขึ้นและจบไปในเวลาไม่ถึง 30 วินาที แต่ความประทับใจนั้นคงจะอยู่ไปอีกนาน โดยเฉพาะอย่างยิ่งสำหรับครอบครัวนี้ในวันที่คุณลูกโตเป็นผู้ใหญ่แล้ว
นี่ยังไม่ได้เริ่มพูดถึงเรื่องคอนเสิร์ทต่างๆ ที่จัดช่วงดึกโดยรอบสนามแข่งเลย! ดูเหมือนว่า Formula 1 จะมีทุกอย่างสำหรับทุกคนจริงๆ
กลับมาที่เรื่องของการแข่งขันกันต่อก่อนที่จะนอกเรื่องออกไปไกล Formula 1 Singapore Airlines Singapore Grand Prix ครั้งนี้เป็น Formula 1 ครั้งที่ 12 ของประเทศสิงคโปร์นับตั้งแต่ที่เริ่มจัดมาตั้งแต่ปี ค.ศ. 2008 และเป็นสนามที่ 15 ของรายการในปีนี้จากจำนวนทั้งหมด 21 สนาม สนามบนถนนจริงสนามนี้มีชื่ออย่างเป็นทางการด้วยว่า Marina Bay Street Circuit ความยาวจริง 5.063 กิโลเมตรต่อแล็ป นักแข่งใช้เวลาไม่ถึงสองนาทีก็วิ่งครบแล็ปหนึ่งแล้ว รวมระยะทางทั้ง 61 แล็ปได้ 308.706 กิโลเมตร
Formula 1 ปีนี้มีรถเข้าแข่งด้วยกันทั้งหมด 10 ทีม บ้างก็เป็นชื่อที่คุ้นเคยกันอยู่แล้วอย่าง Scuderia Ferrari หรือ Renault F1 แต่ก็มีชื่อที่คนไทยอาจจะไม่คุ้นบ้างเช่น Rich Energy Hass F1 และ Rokit Williams Racing ทุกทีมมีนักแข่งสองคนซึ่งจะต้องลงซ้อมรวมสามครั้งตั้งแต่บ่ายวันศุกร์ที่ 20 จนถึงบ่ายวันเสาร์ที่ 21 กันยายน ก่อนที่จะลงสนามในรอบควอลิฟายช่วงค่ำของวันเสาร์
การแข่งขันรวดเร็วและมีการเปลี่ยนลำดับกันอย่างต่อเนื่องอย่างที่ทุกคนพอจะคาดเดากันได้ ในที่สุดแล้วชาร์ลส์ เลอเคลิร์กจากทีม Ferrari ก็คว้าโพลโพสิชั่นไปได้เพื่อการเริ่มออกตัวเป็นลำดับที่หนึ่งในการแข่งจริงค่ำวันนี้ เขาทำเวลาในรอบควอลิฟายได้ 1 นาที 36.217 วินาที อันดับสองคือลูอิส แฮมิลตันของทีม Mercedes-AMG Petronas Motorsport (1 นาที 36.408 วินาที) และอันดับสามคือเพื่อนร่วมทีม Ferrari ของเลอเคลิร์กเอง นั่นก็คือเซบาสเตียน เวทเทล (1 นาที 36.437 วินาที) งานนี้นักแข่งลูกครึ่งไทย อเล็กซ์ อัลบอนของเราจากทีม Red Bull Toro Rosso Honda ก็ทำผลงานได้ดีเป็นอันดับที่หก (1 นาที 37.411 วินาที) แม้ว่านี่จะเป็นครั้งแรกของน้องในการลงสนาม Marina Bay Street Circuit ก็ตาม
สนามสิงคโปร์ในปีนี้มีเหตุให้รถเซฟตี้ต้องออกไปทำหน้าที่อยู่สามครั้งด้วยกัน ครั้งแรกเมื่อจอร์จ รัสเซลของทีม Rokit Williams Racing ถูกเบียดเข้ากำแพงไป ครั้งที่สองเมื่อเซอจิโอ เปเรซของทีม SportPesa Racing Point F1 ถูกสั่งให้หยุดรถ และครั้งที่สามเมื่อคิมิ ไรโคเนนของ Alfa Romeo Racing โดนรถของแดนิล คิฟยัตจากทีม Red Bull Toro Rosso Honda เกี่ยวเข้าจนล้อหน้าซ้ายของไรโคเนนบิดและต้องออกจากการแข่งขันไป เราจึงเห็น Ferrari สีแดงทั้งสองคันขับเลี้ยงแบบตวัดซ้ายขวารอเป็นสองคันแรกด้านหลังรถเซฟตี้อยู่นานเหมือนกันกว่าที่จะแข่งกันต่อแบบไม่มีอุปสรรคอะไรได้
สุดท้ายแล้วชัยชนะของสนามนี้กลับตกเป็นของเซบาสเตียน เวทเทลจากทีม Ferrari ซึ่งทำผลงานได้ดีกว่าทั้งเลอเคลิร์กและแฮมิลตันซึ่งจบการแข่งขันครั้งนี้ในอันดับที่ 2 และ 4 ตามลำดับ ส่วนอเล็กซ์นั้นมีช่วงที่อันดับไหลลงไปถึง 10 ให้เห็นอยู่หลายแล็ปแต่ก็จบการแข่งขันได้ในอันดับที่ 6 ตามลำดับการปล่อยตัวของตนเองพอดี
Rolex เป็นพาร์ทเนอร์ระดับโลกและนาฬิกาอย่างเป็นทางการของ Formula 1 มาเป็นเวลา 7 ปีแล้ว แต่นอกจากนี้ Rolex ก็ยังมีส่วนเกี่ยวข้องกับการแข่งขันและกิจกรรมที่เกี่ยวข้องกับรถยนต์และความเร็วอีกหลายรายการ อาทิ Rolex 24 at Daytona ประเทศสหรัฐอเมริกา 24 Hours of Le Mans ประเทศฝรั่งเศสและ Goodwood Revival ที่สหราชอาณาจักร

The FIA Formula 1 is one of the most watched spectacles in the world with a published figure of 490.2 million audience globally in 2018. Its combined followers on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and YouTube is 18.5 million. Presently, the program comprises 21 races in major cities around the globe, with Monaco and Singapore being important exceptions as they have their Grand Prix not in proper circuits but on a street circuit of closed roads around their city state. Singapore takes things one step further by being the only Formula 1 night race in the world.
World of Watches/Luxuo Thailand is invited by Rolex to see the action first hand. While the level of access itself is astounding, the little details we discovered during our exploration gave us more insight into the behind-the-scene world of Formula 1. Journalists were led on a tour of the paddock club by none other but Sir Jackie Stewart himself who gave us a quick background on how things were back in his days and the situation that is today. The Rolex testimonee of 51 years is a 3-time Formula 1 world champion and, naturally, our group was stopped every now and then because the motoring TV personalities and race team members wanted to shake hands or have a photograph taken with him.
The Renault F1 team was very kind to admit us into their garage while the technicians work their magic on the two cars. Here, we learned about the extent to which the crew members go to help the drivers achieve the best possible results. The dedication is mirrored by some 220 FIA staff who approach their crucial work with professionalism at the race control centre, the live broadcast command (collapsible and movable in three days) and elsewhere around the track. With cars travelling at speed of 300+ kilometres per hour at certain sections, anything can happen at any time and FIA must be able to maximise not only the thrill of the audience but the safety of the drivers. They should win some kind of recognition themselves for being able to match the pace of the cars that negotiate the 23 turns to their win.
Racing is glamourous. People can enjoy it regardless of gender or age. We observed one incident that brought a smile to our faces. One track marshal spotted a mother taking a picture of her young son on the pit lane, stepped in to offer his headphone as a prop, and also kneeled down to be in the photograph with the kid who could not have been more excited. It all happened under 30 seconds but the impression surely will be a lasting one for this family and anyone, or us for that matter.
And we have yet to begin talking about activities outside like the concerts that draw huge crowd each night! There is something for everyone at Formula 1, it seems.
Social observations aside, the 2019 Formula 1 Singapore Airlines Singapore Grand Prix is the 12th Formula 1 event to be held here since 2008. It is the 15th GP race of the year out of the total 21. Its street circuit actually has a name to it: the Marina Bay Street Circuit. It runs the length of 5.063 kilometres per lap, requiring the drivers under two minutes to finish each of the 61 laps for a total distance of 308.706 kilometres.
The ten teams include familiar names like Scuderia Ferrari or Renault F1, but there are others as well like Rich Energy Hass F1 and Rokit Williams Racing. The two drivers from each team do three practice runs from the afternoon of Friday 20 to Saturday 21 September before the qualification race in the evening of Saturday.
After some gripping shuffles, Charles Leclerc of Ferrari has the pole position for the actual race today, having finished the qualifying session with the time of 1:36.217. He is followed by Lewis Hamilton of Mercedes-AMG Petronas Motorsport (1:36.408) and his own Ferrari teammate Sebastian Vettel (1:36.437). We feel the need to note that our half Thai Alex Albon of Red Bull Toro Rosso Honda came in the sixth at 1:37.411 despite this being his first experience with the Marina Bay Street Circuit.
The safety car was deployed three times during the actual race. The first time was when George Russell of Rokit Williams Racing was sent into the wall. Then, Sergio Perez of SportPesa Racing Point F1 was told to stop his car. Lastly, Alfa Romeo Racing’s Kimi Raikkonen got snagged by Daniil Kvyat of Red Bull Toro Rosso Honda, clipping the front left wheel of Raikkonen so bad the Finnish was sent out of the race. We kept seeing the two red Ferraris trailing the safety car in a controlled swerving fashion for quite a good while before the race continued unhindered.
Eventually, it was Ferrari’s Sebastian Vettel who won the Singapore Grand Prix, outperforming both teammate Leclerc and Lewis Hamilton who finished second and fourth, respectively. Alex Albon slipped to the 10th place for a few laps before finishing the race in the sixth place, same as his starting position.
Rolex has been working with Formula 1 as a global partner and the official timepiece for seventh year now. But the Swiss watch brand is also associated with several other car events including the Rolex 24 at Daytona in the United States, the 24 Hours of Le Mans in France and Goodwood Revival in the United Kingdom.
The association between Rolex and motorsport goes beyond timekeeping or speed, in fact. In the tangible side of things, we see very clearly the demand for perfection in engineering and methodology.
