ใครที่เล่นนาฬิกามาตั้งแต่ยุคก่อนจะต้องคุ้นชื่อ Ikepod เพราะแบรนด์ดีไซน์ล้ำแบรนด์นี้เปิดตัวเมื่อปี ค.ศ. 1994 ก่อนที่จะขึ้นสู่จุดที่โด่งดังที่สุดแล้วดับไปเมื่อปี ค.ศ. 2012 ปัจจุบัน Ikepod กลับมาอีกครั้งภายใต้การดำเนินงานของเจ้าของใหม่ในปี ค.ศ. 2018 แม้ว่าดีไซน์จะเหมือนเดิม แต่รูปแบบและกลยุทธ์ก็เปลี่ยนไปเป็นอย่างมาก โดยมีการวางตำแหน่ง Ikepod ใหม่ให้อยู่ในระดับราคาที่คนทั่วไปเอื้อมถึง ส่วนหนึ่งโดยการย้ายฐานการผลิตไปอยู่ที่ฮ่องกงและใช้เครื่อง Miyota
ปีที่แล้ว Ikepod ไม่มีความเคลื่อนไหวอะไรมากนัก ที่เห็นเด่นชัดที่สุดคือการเปิดตัว Megapod รุ่นใหม่ที่ใช้เครื่องออโต้ แล้วในปีนี้เราจึงได้รับข่าวสารว่า Ikepod จับมือกับศิลปิน ทอม คริสโตเฟอร์ เพื่อออกแบบนาฬิกาลิมิเต็ดเอดิชั่นรุ่น Skaters in the Sky
คริสโตเฟอร์นั้นพื้นเพมาจากฮอลลีวู๊ดแต่ย้ายมาตั้งรกรากอยู่ที่นิวยอร์คซิตี้ เขาโด่งดังในฐานะศิลปินแนวเอ็กซ์เพรสชั่นนิสท์ที่มีผลงานสีสันจัดจ้านและคอมโพสิชั่นที่ดูมีชีวิตชีวา ภาพวาดของเขาส่วนมากเป็นเรื่องชีวิตคนเมือง นอกจากเรื่องความคมเข้มและสวยงามแล้วยังมีเรื่องของขนาดที่บางภาพก็ใหญ่โตถึงขั้นเป็นภาพวาดฝาผนังด้วย จึงมีอะไรที่เหมือนกับนาฬิกา Ikepod ในหลายๆ แง่ รวมถึงราคาของภาพวาดที่เมื่อเปรียบเทียบไปแล้วก็อยู่ในเกณฑ์ที่พอจะเข้าถึงได้เหมือนนาฬิกา Ikepod นั่นก็คือภาพละประมาณ 20,000 ดอลลาร์สหรัฐ
Ikepod ชวนให้คริสโตเฟอร์มาวาดภาพสำหรับประดับบนหน้าปัดของนาฬิกา Megapod ขนาดตัวเรือน 46 มม. ภาพทรงกลมนี้มีรายละเอียดเป็นนักสเกตบอร์ดและนกน้อยล่องลอยอยู่ตรงกลาง ล้อมรอบด้วยตึกสูงระฟ้าต่างๆ อันเป็นทัศนียภาพที่ทุกคนจดจำนิวยอร์คซิตี้อยู่แล้ว ทั้งหมดสวยงามอยู่ภายใต้แซฟไฟร์คริสตอลที่ได้รับการเคลือบสารป้องกันแสงสะท้อนเป็นที่เรียบร้อย นาฬิการุ่นนี้ทำงานด้วยเครื่องออโต้ Miyota 9039 ซึ่งมีกำลังลานสำรอง 42 ชั่วโมง สวมใส่ด้วยสายซิลิโคนสีดำหรือสีขาว

Those who have been collecting watches long enough must be familiar with Ikepod. The brand best known for their futuristic design was founded in 1994. After rising to fame and cult status in the ensuing years, the original company folded in 2012 before business resumed under the current owners in 2018. The new business model puts Ikepod watches in a much more affordable segment – a fact that is achieved chiefly by having the watches produced in Hong Kong with Miyota movements.
After hearing only one update from Ikepod in 2020 when they launched the Megapod model with a self-winding movement, we now learn that the firm has partnered up with Tom Christopher for the creation of a limited edition watch called Skaters in the Sky.
Christopher, originally from Hollywood, is a renowned expressionist artist, based in New York City. His paintings are characterised by vibrant colours and dynamic compositions – they revolve mostly around the subject of street anthropology in an urban environment. They are big (some the size of murals), bold and beautiful – the very same qualities as Ikepod watches. As well, they are relatively affordable, just like Ikepod, at around USD 20,000.
The artist was tapped to produce a painting for this 46 mm Megapod limited edition. On the circular canvas that is the dial, we can see skateboarders and birds in the surround of skyscrapers for which the city is known – all protected underneath a sapphire crystal with anti-reflective treatment. The watch is powered by the self-winding Miyota 9039 movement with 42-hour power reserve. It is worn on the wrist with a silicone strap in either black or white.
The first 50 pieces of Ikepod Megapod MTC1 Skaters in the Sky are now ready for delivery. More will be produced to complete a run of 200 units totally. The price is CHF 1,500.
