Omega Speedmaster เป็นนาฬิกาที่มีเกียรติประวัติไม่เหมือนใครในวงการ ชื่อเรียกอีกชื่อหนึ่งหรือ Moonwatch นั้นได้มาจากการที่นาฬิการุ่นนี้เป็นอุปกรณ์ประจำกายของนักบินอวกาศ NASA ตั้งแต่ก่อนภารกิจ Apollo และเรื่อยมาจนถึงปัจจุบัน เป็นเหตุให้นาฬิการุ่นนี้เป็นที่ต้องการของผู้คนทั่วโลกจนถึงขั้นที่เรียกว่าสะสม ทั้งที่ไม่ใช่นาฬิกาที่มีรูปทรงผิดแผกจากปกติและไม่ใช่นาฬิกาของกองทัพทหารใด ทุกวันนี้ใครอยากได้ Omega ก็ยังมีขายอยู่ สนนราคา 173,000 บาทถ้าเป็นรุ่นเฮซาไลท์คริสตอลและ 203,000 บาทถ้าเป็นรุ่นแซฟไฟร์คริสตอล ถ้าจะคิดคำนวณไปแล้วก็ไม่ได้แพงมากอะไรตามมาตรฐานของ Luxuo แต่ก็ถือว่าเพียงพอจะเรียกว่าเป็นของลักชัวรี่แล้วเพราะก็ไม่ใช่ว่าใครๆ จะซื้อหาและครอบครองกันได้ง่ายจนเกินไป
ที่เรานึกอยากพูดถึง Speedmaster ขึ้นมาในวันนี้ก็เพราะว่าชาวโลก (หรืออย่างน้อยก็ชาวอเมริกัน) กำลังร่วมกันรำลึกถึงวาระครบรอบ 50 ปีของการร่อนลงบนดวงจันทร์เป็นครั้งแรกของภารกิจ Apollo 11 เมื่อวันที่ 20 กรกฎาคม ค.ศ. 1969 เรื่องราวของการทดสอบและรับรองนาฬิกา Speedmaster โดย NASA นั้นสื่อนาฬิกาอื่นเขาเขียนกันไปหมดนานแล้ว แม้แต่สื่อที่ไม่ใช่สายนาฬิกาก็ยังมีพูดถึงบ้าง เราเขียนไปก็ซ้ำและไม่ได้ประโยชน์อะไรกับผู้อ่านจึงขอแหวกแนวด้วยการนำเสนอจากมุมของการเป็นเจ้าของแทนบ้าง และต่อไปนี้คือเหตุผล 6 ข้อว่าทำไมคุณจึงไม่ควรซื้อนาฬิกา Speedmaster (แต่เราเขียนมาก็เพื่อทำให้คุณอยากซื้ออยู่ดี เข้าใจตรงกันนะ)
1) หน้าตาโบราณอยู่อย่างนี้มาครึ่งศตวรรษแล้ว
Omega เปิดตัวนาฬิกา Speedmaster เป็นครั้งแรกเมื่อปี ค.ศ. 1957 และหน้าตานาฬิกาก็ยังคงเหมือนเดิมเรื่อยมา ถ้าจะไล่ดูจริงๆ ก็ต้องบอกว่าดีไซน์โดยรวมและเข็มต่างๆ ดูเป็นอย่างปัจจุบันมาตั้งแต่ปี ค.ศ. 1963 แล้ว นั่นมัน 56 ปีเชียว นี่ถ้าใส่ต่อกันไปจนถึงปี ค.ศ. 2050 หรือ 2060 แล้วยังดูหล่ออย่างในทุกวันนี้คงแย่เลย เพราะนาฬิการุ่นอื่นคงไม่ได้มาใช้เวลาอยู่บนข้อมือของคุณมากเท่าที่ควร นี่ยังไม่นับเรื่องที่ว่าพอมี Speedmaster แล้วจะมีความอยากได้นาฬิกาโครโนกราฟอื่นลดลงอีก หรือเรื่องความคูลของการที่มีรูปถ่ายคุณในช่วงปีต่างๆ แต่ยังคงเห็นว่าใส่นาฬิกาเรือนเดิมอย่างต่อเนื่อง
2) กล่องใหญ่โต เก็บซ่อนให้พ้นตาแฟนหรือภรรยาได้ยาก
ก่อนหน้านี้ Speedmaster นั้นมาพร้อมกล่อง Omega ปกติ แต่ตั้งแต่ปี ค.ศ. 2014 เป็นต้นมา Omega ได้ออกแบบกล่องขึ้นมาเป็นพิเศษเพื่อนาฬิการุ่นนี้โดยเฉพาะ เป็นกล่องสีดำขนาดใหญ่โตวางโชว์ได้ เปิดมาข้างในจะมีลูปส่องขยาย สายเวลโครให้สับเปลี่ยนกับสายโลหะ แล้วยังมีเหรียญตราที่มีดีไซน์เหมือนฝาหลังนาฬิกาแต่เอามาขยายส่วนให้ใหญ่โตขึ้นอีก ใครได้ครอบครองกล่องนี้ก็จะรู้สึกได้ถึงความพิเศษ และก็เป็นภาระในตัวด้วยเพราะว่าใหญ่โตขนาดนี้แล้วจะไปซุกซ่อนที่ใดในบ้านได้เล่า กองบรรณาธิการของเราไม่รับฝากกล่องนาฬิกาเสียด้วย แต่ถ้าคุณผู้อ่านสามารถเอาบทความของเราไปแชร์ต่อให้เพื่อนๆ มารักมาสนใจนาฬิกาเหมือนกับพวกเราก็เดี๋ยวจะพิจารณาเป็นกรณีพิเศษก็แล้วกัน
3) ตู้หนังสือที่บ้านคุณจะมีแต่หนังสืออ้างอิงเล่มหนาๆ ดูเนิร์ดๆ
เรื่องนี้บอกเลยว่าห้ามกันยาก เพราะเมื่อเริ่มศึกษานาฬิกา Speedmaster อย่างจริงจัง คุณจะเริ่มเห็นว่ารุ่นปีต่างๆ ก็มีรายละเอียดที่ไม่เหมือนกันเล็กน้อย แล้วก็มีรุ่นพิเศษนั้นโน้นนี้เพื่อการใช้งานในรูปแบบเฉพาะทางบ้างหรือเพื่อฉลองครบรอบกี่ปีของเหตุการณ์ใดก็แล้วแต่ ทั้งหมดนี้ไม่มีแหล่งข้อมูลใดรวบรวมไว้ครบทั้งหมด คุณก็จะต้องซื้อหนังสือเล่มนั้นเล่มนี้ไปเรื่อย ส่วนมากก็จะเล่มหนา โตและแพงอีกต่างหาก แถมพอมีเล่มหนึ่งแล้วก็อยากมีอีกเล่มและอีกเล่มเพียงเพื่อจะให้มันครบ ทั้งที่บางทีก็ไม่ได้ตั้งใจจะอ่านหรอกนะ ก็แค่อยากมีไว้ก่อนเผื่อวันหนึ่งต้องใช้ก็เท่านั้น
4) บางทีคุณอาจจะมานั่งศึกษาเรื่องอวกาศอย่างจริงจังก็ได้ ถึงขั้นต้องเดินทางไปดูยานอวกาศหรือสะสมของอื่นที่เกี่ยวข้องพ่วงไปด้วย
ด้วยความที่ Omega Speedmaster กับการสำรวจอวกาศนั้นเป็นสองสิ่งที่แยกขาดจากกันไม่ได้ เมื่อคุณสนใจนาฬิกาแล้วก็มีความเป็นไปได้สูงที่จะสนใจเรื่องอวกาศไปโดยปริยาย และเมื่อได้เรียนรู้ถึงรายละเอียดต่างๆ ก็จะยิ่งอินกับนาฬิกาโครโนกราฟไขลานรุ่นนี้มากขึ้น เราจะไม่แปลกใจเลยถ้าเห็นคุณไปเยือนสถานที่สำคัญต่างๆ อย่างเช่น Kennedy Space Center ที่เคปคานาเวอราล หรือ National Air and Space Museum (ในภาพ) ที่วอชิงตันดีซี หรือ Museum of Flight ของซีแอตเติล และไหนๆ เราก็เข้าเรื่องนี้แล้ว ขอฝากบอกข่าวว่า Smithsonian มีของเล่นใหม่ที่ใครๆ ก็กดเข้าดูกันได้ นั่นคือ ภาพจำลองสามมิติของยานควบคุมจากภารกิจ Apollo 11 เผื่อใครสนใจและเพื่อให้เข้ากับบรรยากาศในช่วงนี้
5) Speedmaster เป็นนาฬิกาที่มีเรือนเดียวแล้วไม่จบเพราะว่ามันมักจะเรียกเพื่อนมาด้วย
ชื่อ Speedmaster นั้นอาจหมายถึงนาฬิการุ่นเด่นรุ่นเดียว หรือหมายถึงชื่อคอลเลคชั่นนาฬิกาที่ประกอบด้วยหลากรุ่นก็ได้ โดยพื้นฐานแล้ว Omega ก็จะมีนาฬิกาแบบมาตรฐานอย่างที่เรียกชื่อเล่นว่า Moonwatch ขายเป็นหลัก แล้วก็มีรุ่นปลีกย่อยอื่นที่ปรับเปลี่ยนจากพื้นฐานเพื่อให้ถูกใจผู้ซื้อนาฬิกาทั่วไป นอกจากนั้นก็จะมีรุ่นพิเศษหรือรุ่นลิมิเต็ดด้วยเมื่อถึงปีที่มีครบรอบของโอกาสสำคัญทางประวัติศาสตร์ ไม่ว่าจะเป็นของตัวรุ่นนาฬิกา Speedmaster เองหรือของภารกิจสำรวจอวกาศต่างๆ ของ NASA ก็ตาม
นี่เรายังทราบมาด้วยว่าบางคนต้องซื้อสองเรือนเลย เพราะจะเอาเรือนหนึ่งไว้เก็บและอีกเรือนไว้ใส่ ฟังดูอาจจะไม่เมคเซนส์แต่พฤติกรรมคนเล่นนาฬิกามักเป็นอย่างนี้ เอาเป็นว่าเราจะไม่บอกทางบ้านคุณว่าคุณมีสองเรือนเหมือนกัน ด้วยเกียรติของลูกเสือสามัญ
กาลเวลาอาจจะผ่านไปเนิ่นนาน แต่ Omega Speedmaster ก็ยังคงเป็นนาฬิกาที่ได้รับความไว้วางใจจาก NASA และที่จริงแล้วต้องบอกว่ายังเป็นนาฬิกาเพียงรุ่นเดียวในโลก (ที่จริงต้องบอกว่านอกโลก) ที่ NASA อนุญาตให้นักบินอวกาศสวมขณะออกไปปฏิบัติภารกิจนอกยานได้ จริงอยู่ที่เรื่องอวกาศไม่ใช่เรื่องที่ทำให้คนสมัยนี้ตื่นเต้นหรืออยากรู้เท่ากับว่าเซเลบคนดังคนใดจะใส่ชุดหรือถือกระเป๋าอะไรไปงานปาร์ตี้ใด แต่ถ้าใครคิดจะสะสมนาฬิกาอย่างจริงจังแล้ว Speedmaster ก็ถือเป็นนาฬิการุ่นหนึ่งที่จะข้ามไปไม่ได้เลยอยู่ดี

The Omega Speedmaster has a unique place of its own in the history and hierarchy of timepieces. Dubbed the Moonwatch for the fact that it was the watch worn by NASA astronauts before, during and after the Apollo missions, the Speedmaster has gained a cult following worldwide, despite not being neither a shape watch or a military watch. Today, the legendary chronograph can still be purchased as new from Omega at the cost of 173,000 baht for the hesalite crystal model or 203,000 baht for the sapphire crystal model. While the price is relatively affordable by Luxuo standard, it is expensive enough for the watch not to be too easily accessible that it can be had by everyone.
We are talking about the Speedmaster again today as the world (or at least the United States) celebrates the 50th anniversary of the Apollo 11 moon landing on 20 July. The story of how the Omega watch was tested and certified by NASA is covered by the major watch titles and even some non-watch ones that anything we do will be repetitive. Therefore, we figure it would be refreshing to approach the watch from a more owner-oriented perspective. And so, here are our six (tongue-in-cheek) reasons why you should not start down this long and financially-depleting journey.
1) The design is dated. It has not really changed in half a century. Omega first introduced the Speedmaster in 1957. It has undergone very little changes since. In fact, the watch has looked more or less like today since 1963. That’s 56 years! Imagine how the watch will still look handsome on your wrist in 2050 or 2060. That must be quite annoying because the other watches will not get adequate wrist time, not to mention the loss of appetite for other potential chronograph purchases. It also too handsome to have photographs showing you with the same watch over the decades.
2) The box is big. It will be hard to hide from your spouse.
The Speedmaster used to come with a standard Omega box. However, beginning in 2014, Omega decided to give the watch its own dedicated, presentation-style packaging, complete with a loupe, an extra Velcro strap and a medallion in the design of an enlarged Speedmaster caseback. The whole ensemble makes you feel you own something special, but it is inexcusably a burden to find a place to stash in your man cave. We at Luxuo/World of Watches cannot help you hide this box, but will reconsider if you can get a dozen of your friends to follow our watch articles.
3) Your shelves will be filled with thick and geeky reference books.
As you dive deeper down into the universe of Speedmasters, you will see how there are subtle differences between generational references in the past, special models developed for a special purpose or unique designs created to commemorate certain occasions. You need books in order to navigate these waters. The major ones are usually big, thick and expensive. And, believe it or not, the purchase of these books is often compulsive – sometimes you buy because you feel you need them, without the intention to actually read.
4) Chances are that you will become a space buff. You will begin to visit unusual places, monitor rare item auctions or otherwise hunt down space-related memorabilia.
Given the close association between the Omega Speedmaster and the space programs, it is inevitable that you will read up on the latter too in order to further develop your appreciation for this unrivalled hand-winding chronograph. We will not be surprised to see your photographs from the Kennedy Space Center at Cape Canaveral, the National Air and Space Museum (shown above) in Washington D.C. or the Museum of Flight in Seattle. 5) One Speedmaster is usually not enough.
The Speedmaster name refers to a singular watch as well as an ever-growing family of watches. While the standard Moonwatch is offered as a core product, other variations are produced each year to cater to the demand of the general public. Special and limited edition models are of course released for all relevant anniversaries. We know that some collectors have this practice of buying two of the same watch too: one for wearing and one for keeping. It does not make sense all right, but we get what you are doing and will keep your identity confidential … for now.
The Omega Speedmaster is still flight qualified. In fact, it remains the only watch certified by NASA for extravehicular activities so that is another bragging right by itself. Although its role in the contemporary world is not as stellar because humanity is more interested in what a celebrity wears to a party than a mission into the space, the watch is still a very important timepiece to have in any well-rounded collection. And now is as good a time than ever to get one.
