Hermès เปิดโรงงานคริสตอล Saint-Louis โชว์ขั้นตอนเบื้องหลังการทำหน้าปัดมิเลฟิออรี

ไม่รู้ว่าคุณผู้อ่านจะเป็นเหมือนผมหรือเปล่า ผมสามารถชื่นชมรายละเอียดของนาฬิกาเรือนหนึ่งได้ต่อให้ดีไซน์หรือรูปลักษณ์จะไม่เหมาะกับตัวผมก็ตาม อย่างเช่นนาฬิกาที่ใช้หน้าปัดมิเลฟิออรีของ Hermès นั้นไม่เป็นตัวผมเลย แต่ผมก็ปลาบปลื้มและเลือกมานำเสนอเมื่อมีโอกาส ผมว่าหน้าปัดเทคนิคนี้มีความพิเศษ และก็อยากเห็นขั้นตอนการผลิตมาโดยตลอด แม้ว่าจะไม่ใช่นาฬิกา Hermès รุ่นที่ผมชอบที่สุดหรือคิดจะซื้อก็ตาม
และแล้ววันหนึ่งก่อนสถานการณ์ Covid โชคก็เข้าข้างเมื่อ World of Watches/Luxuo Thailand ได้รับเชิญให้ร่วมทริปเดินทางไปเยือนโรงงานแห่งต่างๆ ของ La Montre Hermès ในประเทศสวิตเซอร์แลนด์และฝรั่งเศส หนึ่งในสถานที่สำคัญภายใต้โปรแกรมนี้ก็คือ Cristalleries de Saint-Louis ในเมืองแซ็งลุยส์เลส์บีทช์ทางด้านตะวันออกเฉียงเหนือของประเทศฝรั่งเศส
การเดินทางไปแซ็งลุยส์เลส์บีทช์ไม่ใช่เรื่องยาก เพียงแค่ต้องใช้เวลาประมาณหนึ่ง กล่าวคือ ถ้าเริ่มต้นจากปารีส คุณจะต้องนั่งรถไฟ TGV เป็นเวลาสองชั่วโมงไปลงที่สตราสบูร์ก แล้วก็นั่งรถยนต์หรือรถบัสต่อไปอีกราวสองชั่วโมง แล้วแต่ว่าการจราจรเวลานั้นหนาแน่นเพียงใด หมู่บ้านเล็กๆ อันสงบเงียบแห่งนี้เองเป็นที่ทำงานของช่างฝีมือและช่างศิลป์แห่ง Cristalleries de Saint-Louis ซึ่งหลายคนมีฝีมือระดับที่ได้รับเหรียญ Meilleurs Ouvriers de France จากรัฐบาลฝรั่งเศสเพื่อเป็นการรับรองความเชี่ยวชาญ
Cristalleries de Saint-Louis ผลิตเครื่องคริสตอลสำหรับโต๊ะอาหาร แจกันและแชนเดอเลียร์ขายให้แก่คนรักงานคริสตอลทั่วโลกด้วยทักษะที่ส่งผ่านต่อกันจากรุ่นสู่รุ่น บริษัทนี้ก่อตั้งเมื่อปี ค.ศ. 1586 แต่โด่งดังต่อเนื่องตั้งแต่ปี ค.ศ. 1767 เมื่อได้รับตราตั้งห้างจากพระเจ้าหลุยส์ที่ 15 และเริ่มใช้ชื่อ Compagnie des verreries et Cristalleries de Saint-Louis ในปี ค.ศ. 1829 จนในที่สุดบริษัทนี้ก็มาอยู่ในการครอบครองของ Hermès ในปี ค.ศ. 1989

Hermès Arceau Millefiori ขนาดและสีต่างๆ จึงตามต่อมาในปี ค.ศ. 2014 โดยที่หน้าปัดมิเลฟิออรีของนาฬิกาเหล่านี้ได้รับแรงบันดาลใจมาจากที่ทับกระดาษยุคศตวรรษที่ 19 ซึ่งเป็นงานผลิตอันเลื่องชื่อของ Saint-Louis
มิเลฟิออรีเป็นคำในภาษาอิตาเลียนที่แปลว่า “ดอกไม้นับพัน” ชื่อนี้มีที่มาจากงานศิลป์ที่ผลิตด้วยแก้วมูราโน่ตั้งแต่สมัยอดีต เวลาจะสร้างผลงานสักชิ้นหนึ่งก็ต้องเอาก้านแก้วสีสันต่างๆ มาตัดเป็นท่อนสั้นๆ แล้วเรียงร้อยต่อกันจนเกิดเป็นลวดลายที่ดูสะดุดตา ทางด้าน Saint-Louis เองก็นำสไตล์ศิลปะชิ้นนี้มาประกอบในผลงานของตนเองอย่างเช่นที่ทับกระดาษดังกล่าวตั้งแต่ยุคศตวรรษที่ 19 แล้ว
งานมิเลฟิออรีเป็นงานที่ต้องใช้ความอุตสาหะในหลายขั้นตอน ก่อนที่จะมีคริสตอลชิ้นเล็กๆ มาสร้างเป็นลายดอกไม้นั้น ช่างทำแก้วจะต้องผลิตก้านแก้วยาวเป็นสี ลวดลายและขนาดต่างๆ เสียก่อน ก้านแก้วนี้เกิดจากการที่ช่างสองคนนำแท่งเหล็กสองแท่งมาช่วยกันดึงก้อนคริสตอลที่ร้อนและหลอมเหลวจนเกิดเป็นเส้นยาวที่มีขนาดเส้นผ่าศูนย์กลางเพียงไม่กี่มิลลิเมตร ก่อนที่คริสตอลนั้นจะมีอุณหภูมิลดลงและเริ่มแข็งตัว กระบวนการนี้จำเป็นต้องอาศัยทั้งประสบการณ์ ความชำนาญและความมั่นใจของช่างที่ทำหน้าที่นี้อยู่เป็นประจำทุกวัน
ก้านแก้วที่ได้นั้นบ้างก็ถูกนำมาหลอมรวมกันเพื่อให้เกิดเป็นลวดลายที่ซับซ้อนยิ่งกว่าเดิม จากนั้นจึงนำไปเก็บรอไว้ในสต็อก เมื่อจะใช้งานก็นำมาตัดเป็นท่อนความยาวราว 10 มม. แล้ววางเรียงเป็นแนวตั้งบนเบ้าเหล็กหล่อจนได้เป็นลวดลายที่ต้องการ ก่อนที่จะนำคริสตอลใสหลอมเหลวมาผนึกด้านบนเพื่อยึดทุกอย่างให้อยู่กับที่แล้วนำชิ้นงานนี้ทั้งลูกไปเข้าเตาอีกครั้ง ไม่เชื่อก็ต้องเชื่อว่าช่างฝีมือของ Saint-Louis สามารถทำทั้งหมดนี้ได้โดยไม่มีฟองอากาศปะปนอยู่ในเนื้อคริสตอลเลย ถือเป็นเรื่องที่น่าทึ่งจริงๆ
และแน่นอนว่าถ้าจะทำหน้าปัดนาฬิกาด้วยเทคนิคนี้ก็ยากยิ่งกว่าที่ทับกระดาษ เพราะหน้าปัดนาฬิกามีขนาดเส้นผ่าศูนย์กลางเล็กกว่ามาก ชิ้นก้านแก้วแต่ละชิ้นก็ต้องเล็กและละเอียดกว่าด้วย และเมื่อทาง Saint-Louis ผนึกก้อนคริสตอลได้เสร็จก็ต้องส่งชิ้นงานไปยังโรงงานอีกแห่งหนึ่งที่มีความเชี่ยวชาญด้านงานตัด จึงจะได้เป็นแผ่นมิเลฟิออรีบางเฉียบเท่ากับความหนาของหน้าปัดนาฬิกาเพื่อนำไปประกอบกับเครื่องและบรรจุเข้าตัวเรือนต่อไป
Hermès มีการออกนาฬิการุ่น Arceau Millefiori เพิ่มเติมเรื่อยมา ส่วนมากที่เห็นเป็นตัวเรือนไวท์โกลด์ขนาด 34 มม. สำหรับผู้หญิงและ 41 มม. สำหรับผู้ชาย บ้างก็เป็นนาฬิกาพกก็มี อย่างเช่นล่าสุดในปี ค.ศ. 2018 ก็มีนาฬิกาพก Arceau Pocket Millefiori หน้าปัดมิเลฟิออรีลายเกล็ดหนังจระเข้สีดำ บนด้านหลังตัวเรือนไวท์โกลด์ขนาด 48 มม. มีการหุ้มหนังจระเข้สีดำด้านลายเดียวกันกับบนหน้าปัด นาฬิกาพกเรือนนี้มาพร้อมกับสายยาวแบบคล้องคอได้ และทำงานด้วยเครื่องอินเฮ้าส์รุ่น Hermès H1837 ซึ่งมีกำลังลานสำรองนาน 50 ชั่วโมง นาฬิกาข้อมือที่มีหน้าปัดลายนี้ก็มีเช่นกัน นั่นก็คือนาฬิกา Arceau Millefiori Croco ขนาดตัวเรือน 41 มม. โดยจะมีหน้าปัดให้เลือกสองสีคือสีดำและสีน้ำเงิน คุณผู้ชายท่านใดที่เคยรู้สึกว่า Arceau Millefiori ดูหวานไปหรือหญิงไปก็อยากให้พิจารณา Arceau Millefiori Croco ก่อนอีกครั้งเผื่อเปลี่ยนใจเพราะว่าดูแมนกว่ารุ่นอื่นที่เป็นลายดอกไม้อยู่มาก

If you agree that all watches need to stand for something, you should be able to appreciate the qualities imbued in each timepiece even if it is not meant for your wrist. Such is the case of this writer and the millefiori-dialled watches from Hermès. I love these cute little creations but they are not for me – there are other Hermès watches I am keener to spend on. Still, I have always been promoting the Millefiori watches from Hermès as a highly characteristic option and am interested to learn more about them.
That chance to see the processes involved in making Hermès crystal art dials came to me shortly before the current pandemic situation. World of Watches/Luxuo Thailand was invited to join a press tour that covered various sites involved in the watchmaking activities of La Montre Hermès in France and Switzerland. One of the locations in the itinerary included the Cristalleries de Saint-Louis in the northeastern French commune of Saint-Louis-lès-Bitche.
A journey to Saint-Louis-lès-Bitche is long but rather straightforward. You only need to take a 2-hour TGV ride from Paris to Strasbourg and continue the rest of the journey by car or bus for about two more hours. Here, in this quiet village, a group of dedicated craftsmen and artisans, many of them holders of the Meilleurs Ouvriers de France medal of the government, continue to practice the ancestral skills passed from one generation to the next.
Cristalleries de Saint-Louis was established in 1586. It rose to fame in 1767 when it received the seal of approval from King Louis XV. The name Compagnie des verreries et Cristalleries de Saint-Louis was adopted in 1829, and their crystal tableware, vases and chandeliers are coveted by connoisseurs of the world.
It was perhaps by chance that the company Saint-Louis came under the ownership of Hermès in 1989. The collaboration between Saint-Louis and La Montre Hermès was formed in this present decade when the latter looked to create a crystal sphere for the 2013 Hermès Atmos clock. The Hermès Arceau Millefiori watches in various sizes and styles followed in 2014 – their fanciful dials are inspired, first of all, by the 19th century paperweights for which Saint-Louis is famous.
Millefiori is Italian for “a thousand flowers”. The name is associated with the ancient glasswork style of Murano where short segments of colourful glass canes were composed together, forming attractive and fanciful patterns. The French maison readily adopted that artistic style and we can see such implementation in their paperweights from as early as the 19th century.
The process reflects a multi-step labour of patience. Before there can be small bits of crystal flowers, there is the need to create crystal canes of different colours, patterns and diameters. This is done through a process that requires great experience, dexterity and confidence as two glassmakers must play a tug and pull game until the gob of molten crystal between their punties becomes a long thread that measures only a few millimetres in diameter – all this before the temperature drops too significantly and the crystal begins to solidify.
In many cases, the derived canes are assembled together to form even more complex patterns. Prepared canes are subsequently stored in the stock, cut into bits of 10 mm in length and arranged vertically in a cast iron bowl to form the desired floral dial pattern. Molten clear crystal is eventually applied over the motif to encapsulate it, and the whole ensemble is then heated in the furnace. By some kind of magic, the artisans at Saint-Louis can do this without leaving air bubbles inside the crystal ball.
And, of course, things get more delicate (and complicated) when the technique is used to create a watch dial whose diameter is much smaller than a conventional paperweight. Besides, the finished millefiori arrangements from Saint-Louis have to be sent to a certain specialist company capable of slicing them into thin dial pieces.
Hermès has been slowly expanding their offerings in the Arceau Millefiori range over the years with mostly white gold watches for ladies (34 mm) and gentlemen (41 mm), plus a few pocket watches in the mix. Most recently, for 2018, Hermès showed us the Arceau Pocket Millefiori whose crystal dial is designed after black alligator scales. Mirroring the effect is the matte black alligator leather cladding on the back of the 48 mm white gold case. This pocket watch, worn on a cord strap, is powered by the Hermès H1837 manufacture movement with 50-hour power reserve. The same pattern can be found on the dial of the 41 mm Arceau Millefiori Croco wristwatch in either black or blue colour tones. Male readers who felt that Arceau Millefiori watches look too feminine are welcome to reconsider these more masculine variations.
Heritage, craftmanship and artistry combine to afford these timepieces a unique place within the watch industry – an object of art, if you will. The helpful staff at Hermès boutiques are ready to present these choices and more to you when you have the time to pay them a visit. And if one day you find yourself in Saint-Louis-lès-Bitche because you are inspired to commission a chandelier, make sure you grab a couple of extra paperweights from the shop to go with your watch!
