Grand Seiko คือแบรนด์นาฬิการะดับสูงของ Seiko ซึ่งหากมองเฉพาะรุ่นที่ใช้เครื่องแบบจักรกลจะมีสนนราคาเริ่มต้นเฉลี่ยราว 200,000 บาทในรุ่นสเตนเลสสตีล เรื่อยไปจนถึงรุ่นทองที่มีราคาเกิน 1 ล้านบาทได้ การผลิตนาฬิกา Grand Seiko แยกเป็น 2 โรงงาน ได้แก่ โรงงานที่เมืองโมริโอกะซึ่งอยู่ทางทิศเหนือของโตเกียว (แต่ยังอยู่บนเกาะฮอนชู) ทำหน้าที่ผลิตนาฬิกาจักรกล และ โรงงานที่เมืองนากาโนะทางทิศตะวันตกของโตเกียวทำหน้าที่ผลิตนาฬิกาเครื่องสปริงไดรฟ์ หากต้องการจะเดินทางจากโตเกียวไปยังโรงงานแห่งใดแห่งหนึ่งก็สามารถใช้บริการรถไฟชิงกันเซ็นได้ นั่งไปประมาณ 2 ชั่วโมงก็ถึง
ในฝั่งของโมริโอกะที่ผลิตนาฬิกาจักรกล Grand Seiko นั้นก็มีการประกาศเปิดสตูดิโอประกอบนาฬิกาแห่งใหม่สุดสวยงามในชื่อ Grand Seiko Studio Shizukuishi เมื่อเดือนกรกฎาคม ค.ศ. 2020 ซึ่งเป็นปีฉลองครบรอบ 60 ปีของแบรนด์ Grand Seiko พอดี ตัวผมเองนั้นเมื่อได้เห็นภาพก็อยากมาเยือนด้วยตนเองทันที แต่ไม่ว่าอย่างไรก็ต้องรอให้ผู้คนเดินทางระหว่างประเทศได้ก่อน แล้วสุดท้ายก็ยังต้องรอให้ญี่ปุ่นเปิดประเทศอีกด้วย ดังนั้นเมื่อได้รับเชิญจาก Grand Seiko ให้ไปชมโรงงานแห่งใหม่นี้ช่วงต้นเดือนธันวาคมที่ผ่านมา ผมจึงรีบตอบตกลงอย่างรวดเร็วกว่าปกติ
อาคารสไตล์โลว์ไรส์ที่ออกแบบโดยเคนโกะ คุมะแห่งนี้มีโครงสร้างที่ประกอบด้วยเสาไม้และหน้าบานกระจกเป็นหลัก นี่คือสถานที่ทำงานของแผนกประกอบนาฬิกาซึ่งเดิมใช้พื้นที่หนึ่งชั้นภายในอาคารโรงงานหน้าตาปกติในรั้วเดียวกันซึ่งเป็นตึกที่อยู่ร่วมกับสำนักงานและแผนกผลิตชิ้นส่วนต่างๆ ด้วย
ดังนั้นเมื่อแยกมาอยู่ต่างหากเช่นนี้แล้ว แผนกประกอบนาฬิกาจึงมีพื้นที่ทำงานกว้างขวาง ภายในห้องคลีนรูมที่โปร่งสูง เปิดรับแสงจากภายนอกอย่างเต็มที่และยังส่งเสริมให้ผู้คนที่ Studio Shizukuishi แห่งนี้รู้สึกเป็นหนึ่งกับธรรมชาติที่อยู่โดยรอบด้วย นี่คือบ้านเกิดของนาฬิกา Grand Seiko รุ่นที่ใช้เครื่องรุ่นจักรกลและนาฬิกา Seiko ระดับไฮเอ็นด์บางรุ่น โดยในกระบวนการผลิตนี้นาฬิกา Grand Seiko ตัวเครื่องนาฬิกาจะต้องถูกทดสอบความเที่ยงตรงใน 6 ทิศทางที่ 3 อุณหภูมิเป็นระยะเวลารวม 17 วัน ก่อนที่จะมีการติดตั้งแผ่นหน้าปัดและเข็มเพื่อบรรจุลงในตัวเรือน จากนั้นจึงเป็นขั้นตอนของการทดสอบประสิทธิภาพในการกันน้ำแล้วจึงประกอบสายนาฬิกาเป็นขั้นตอนสุดท้าย
ความหลักแหลมอย่างหนึ่งในการออกแบบโรงงานแห่งนี้คือการทำทางเดินยาวขนานไปกับห้องคลีนรูมเพื่อให้ผู้มาเยือนยืนชื่นชมการทำงานแต่ละขั้นตอนผ่านกระจกได้โดยไม่เป็นการรบกวนช่างนาฬิกาและช่างฝีมืออื่นๆ ที่ทำงานอยู่ภายในห้อง ความรู้สึกมันย่อมแตกต่างจากที่ผมเคยมาชมสตูดิโอแห่งเก่าเมื่อปี ค.ศ. 2016 เพราะว่าในสมัยนั้นเรายังใส่ชุดกันฝุ่นแล้วเดินไปตามโต๊ะของกลุ่มงานต่างๆ ภายในห้องคลีนรูมได้โดยตรง แต่ผมก็เห็นด้วยว่าจากนี้ไปควรชมผ่านกระจก โดยเฉพาะอย่างยิ่งเมื่อโรงงานแห่งนี้ตั้งใจจะเปิดรับแขกอย่างจริงจัง ไม่ใช่ปีละไม่กี่วันแบบเมื่อก่อน หากทุกคนเดินเข้าไปในคลีนรูมได้ทุกวันก็ย่อมส่งผลต่อการทำงานจริงและอาจก่อให้เกิดความเสียหายโดยไม่ตั้งใจได้
เมื่อรับชมกระบวนการต่างๆ เสร็จสิ้นแล้วแขกผู้มาเยือนทุกคนต้องไม่พลาดโอกาสการขึ้นไปนั่งชมวิวภูเขาอิวาเตะจากห้องรับรอง เพราะนี่คือภูเขาอันเป็นต้นกำเนิดแห่งแรงบันดาลใจในการออกแบบนาฬิกาหลายรุ่นของที่นี่ และถ้าอยากได้ของที่ระลึกกลับบ้านก็สามารถเลือกซื้อนาฬิการุ่นพิเศษที่ระบุว่าเป็น Studio Shizukuishi Limited Edition บนด้านหลังของตัวเรือน เดิมทีนั้นเขามีอยู่ 4 รุ่นแต่เขียนชื่อโรงงานเป็นภาษาญี่ปุ่น นี่ก็เปลี่ยนใหม่เป็นภาษาอังกฤษแล้ว และมีรุ่นพิเศษสุดที่ออกในปี ค.ศ. 2020 พร้อมกับการเปิดโรงงานแห่งใหม่โดยเฉพาะ ซึ่งนาฬิกาทั้งหมดนี้จะต้องซื้อที่โรงงานแห่งนี้เท่านั้นโดยผู้ที่มาเยือนจริงเท่านั้น ไม่สามารถอยู่เมืองไทยหรือประเทศอะไรแล้วสั่งซื้อได้
ช่วงท้ายของวัน คนที่โรงงานพาคณะของเราออกไปเดินบริเวณรอบนอกอาคารเพื่อให้เห็นสิ่งเล็กสิ่งน้อยต่างๆ ที่ Grand Seiko ทำเพื่อยกระดับคุณภาพของสิ่งแวดล้อมในละแวกของตน ไม่ว่าจะเป็นระบบกรองน้ำแบบธรรมชาติ บ้านนกที่ติดตั้งไว้บนต้นไม้ซึ่งส่วนมากจะเป็นนกติ๊ดมาอยู่ และโรงแรมแมลงตั้งไว้ตามจุดต่างๆ รอบโรงงานเพื่อช่วยสร้างความหลากหลายทางด้านชีวภาพของพื้นที่ สมแล้วที่เป็นแบรนด์ที่มีสโลแกนชัดเจนว่า The Nature of Time
เรารู้ดีอยู่แล้วว่านาฬิกา Grand Seiko ทุกเรือนนั้นผลิตตามมาตรฐานอันเคร่งครัดสูงสุดตามสไตล์ความจริงจังของคนญี่ปุ่น ไม่ว่าโรงงานจะมีหน้าตาเป็นอย่างไรก็ตาม แต่การที่ Grand Seiko มีอาคารโรงงานสไตล์สตูดิโอที่สวยงามเช่นนี้ก็ย่อมช่วยในเรื่องภาพลักษณ์และการสื่อสารได้อย่างเยี่ยมยอด เพราะนอกจากจะดูดีในความเป็นผลิตภัณฑ์ลักชัวรี่แล้วก็ยังเปี่ยมด้วยเรื่องราวและจิตวิญญาณซึ่งจะเพิ่มความภาคภูมิใจให้กับผู้ที่ได้เป็นเจ้าของนาฬิการะดับไฮเอ็นด์จากค่ายนี้ได้เป็นอย่างดี สำหรับใครที่อยากมาสัมผัสความพิเศษของ Grand Seiko Studio Shizukuishi แห่งนี้ด้วยตนเองก็สามารถทำได้แต่ว่าจะต้องมีการนัดหมายล่วงหน้าให้เรียบร้อยเสียก่อน ไม่สามารถมายืนเคาะประตูหน้าโรงงานแล้วเข้าได้โดยไม่มีการทำนัด รายละเอียดเพิ่มเติมกรุณาสอบถามกับบูติค Grand Seiko ที่สามารถให้คำแนะนำคุณได้ในเรื่องนี้โดยตรง

After two years of waiting for Japan to reopen borders, this writer finally had the chance to walk into the door of this exceptionally inspiring production facility.

Grand Seiko is the upscale brand of Seiko, offering mechanical watches at a price from about 200,000 baht for stainless steel models but gold ones can go above 1,000,000 baht. The brand operates two main production sites. Mechanical watches are produced in Morioka to the north of Tokyo on the main Honshu island. Spring Drive watches are produced in Nagano to the west of Tokyo. Both towns are reachable by Shinkansen bullet train in roughly two hours.
In July 2020, the Morioka site for mechanical watches announced the completion of the new Studio Shizukuishi, coinciding with the 60th anniversary of the Grand Seiko brand. I was intrigued from the first time I saw the photographs, but a visit was possible only once international travel resumed, and then only once Japan reopened its border. So when the invitation came from Grand Seiko for me to visit the Studio Shizukuishi in early December last year, I was uncustomarily quick to say yes.
This low-rise, high-vault building with wood pillars and glass facades is designed by Kengo Kuma, and houses the assembly department which used to occupy one floor in an adjacent, nondescript industrial building, together with offices and parts production operations.
Unlike the previous Studio Shizukuishi, this one is brighter, taller and more spacious. Here, maximum amount of light is allowed to enter in order to facilitate precision work, as well as to give people who work here the sense of being as one with the nature around them. It is here that mechanical Grand Seiko and some of the high-end Seiko watches are assembled and tested. Grand Seiko movements are tested over 17 days in six positions and at three temperature levels before dials and hands are put on them and everything is cased up. Water resistance tests follow, then either a bracelet or a strap is attached to the watch, depending on the model.
A purpose-built walkway allows visitors to observe what was being done inside the clean room without any disturbance to the watchmakers and technicians. Previously, like during my 2016 visit to the old studio, one could wear a clean suit and walk up to the different workbenches. Now, a visit is less up close, but meaningful still. It also makes more operational sense like this now that the facility looks forward to receiving many more visitors than in the past. Frequent or daily presence of outsiders inside the clean room increases the risk of distraction and accidents, and nobody would want that to happen.
Guests who have finished the tour can retire to the second floor lounge with a view of Mount Iwate, the source of many inspirations for Grand Seiko. They can also indulge in the purchase of a Studio Shizukuishi Limited Edition watch of which there are five models (four from before the new studio but with the rotor in English now instead of Japanese, plus one new model in 2020 to mark the inauguration of the new building. These watches must be purchased on-site by visitors. It is not possible to order them through your regular channel.
At the end of the visit, we were led on a walk through the trees and the ponds behind the building in order to see the little things Grand Seiko is doing to help the nature in their immediate vicinity. Apart from the natural water filtration system, they have bird houses up on trees for mostly titmouses to occupy, and there are insect hotels scattered around the site to further contribute to the biological diversity around this studio of the brand whose philosophy, aptly, is The Nature of Time.
Having such a beautiful studio is important to the overall branding efforts of Grand Seiko as it adds perceived value in the view of customers. We know for a fact that Grand Seiko watches are built to the highest Japanese standards, regardless of how the production facility looks, but this is good storytelling still where luxury products are concerned. The place is soulful, or I should like to think so for myself, and the perfect backdrop for such an emotional product as high-end wristwatches. This studio is open to the public, however, walk-ins are not permitted. Individuals and groups who are interested to explore the site must make an appointment in advance and receive an approval prior to the visit.
