ความเที่ยงตรงและความประณีตเป็นคุณสมบัติสำคัญที่ทำให้ Grand Seiko เป็นที่สนใจของคนรักนาฬิกามาโดยตลอด และในช่วงเวลาหลายปีที่ผ่านมานี้ทางแบรนด์ก็ยังเดินหน้าทำการตลาดอย่างจริงจัง เพื่อตอกย้ำคอนเซปท์ Nature of Time ให้นาฬิกา Grand Seiko มีความโดดเด่น แตกต่างจากเรือนเวลาอื่นๆ ในสายตาของผู้ซื้อนาฬิกาทั่วโลก คอนเซปท์นี้มีที่มาจากวัฒนธรรมของคนญี่ปุ่นเองที่มีส่วนสัมพันธ์กับธรรมชาติเป็นอย่างมาก โดยเฉพาะอย่างยิ่งในเรื่องของการเปลี่ยนถ่ายจากฤดูกาลหนึ่งไปยังอีกฤดูกาลหนึ่งที่ย่อมนำมาซึ่งภาพบรรยากาศที่เปลี่ยนแปลงไปตลอดทั้งปี
เวทีสำคัญที่ถูกใช้เพื่อการถ่ายทอดเรื่องราวต่างๆ นี้ก็คือหน้าปัดนาฬิกา หากคุณผู้อ่านท่านใดสนใจนาฬิกามานานแล้วก็จะรู้สึกกับหน้าปัดลายสโนวเฟลคของ Grand Seiko ที่เป็นจุดเริ่มต้นแห่งการนำเอาทิวทัศน์บริเวณโดยรอบโรงงานมาเป็นแรงบันดาลใจในการออกแบบ อย่างเช่นหน้าปัดลายสโนวเฟลคนี้ก็มีที่มาจากพื้นผิวของภูเขาที่ดูเป็นลายนูนสูงต่ำไปตามหน้าดินที่มีหิมะปกคลุม
อีกหนึ่งลวดลายสำคัญที่กลายเป็นซิกเนเจอร์ของ Grand Seiko ไปแล้วก็คือลายเปลือกต้นเบิร์ชที่เปิดตัวในเดือนกุมภาพันธ์ ค.ศ. 2021 ด้วยนาฬิการุ่น SLGH005 หรือที่เรียกกันติดปากในวงการว่ารุ่น White Birch เพราะว่าลวดลายบนหน้าปัดนี้ถอดแบบมาจากเปลือกของต้นเบิร์ชที่อยู่ในป่าใกล้กับโรงงานชิซูกูอิชิของ Grand Seiko ที่เมืองโมริโอกะ ห่างจากโตเกียวขึ้นไปทางทิศเหนือราว 550 กิโลเมตร ลวดลายที่ปรากฏบนแผ่นหน้าปัดนี้เกิดจากหลายกระบวนการไม่ว่าจะเป็นการปั๊ม การขัด การชุบและการเคลือบจนได้ผลลัพธ์ที่ละเอียดอ่อนอย่างที่เห็น และแม้ว่าลายไม้นั้นจะแผ่ไปทั่วหน้าปัดแต่ก็ไม่ได้รบกวนสวยตาเมื่ออ่านค่าเวลาเลยเพราะว่าความชัดเจนของหลักชั่วโมงที่นำมาประดับและเข็มนาฬิกาที่มีความหนักแน่น
SLGH005 White Birch รุ่นนี้เป็นส่วนหนึ่งของคอลเลคชั่น Elegance ดีไซน์ของตัวเรือนเป็นสไตล์ใหม่ที่ Grand Seiko ตั้งชื่อว่า Evolution 9 ซึ่งครอบคลุมสามส่วนสำคัญ ได้แก่ สุนทรียศาสตร์ ความชัดเจนในการอ่านค่า และความสบายข้อมือ ทั้งหมดนี้ปรากฏอยู่ในทุกมุมมองของตัวเรือนขนาดเส้นผ่าศูนย์กลาง 40 มม. ที่มีความหนา 11.7 มม. ทันทีที่คุณทาบนาฬิการุ่นนี้บนข้อมือก็จะรู้สึกได้ว่าขาตัวเรือนค่อนข้างกว้างและจุดศูนย์ถ่วงของตัวเรือนค่อนข้างต่ำจึงเกาะข้อมือได้กระชับกว่า เมื่อมองจากด้านข้างก็จะเห็นว่าตัวเรือนมีแนวโค้งเล็กน้อย และมีการขัดแต่งเป็นแบบลายเส้นและแบบขัดเงาสลับกันอย่างไร้ที่ติ ทั้งนี้ Grand Seiko ได้เลือกใช้รูปทรงของตัวเรือนนาฬิการุ่น 44GS จากปี ค.ศ. 1967 เป็นต้นแบบ เราจึงกล่าวได้ว่านี่เป็นความพยายามในการนำพามรดกที่มีมาแต่อดีตให้ไปสู่โลกยุคต่อไปได้ด้วยรายละเอียดร่วมสมัยอย่างแท้จริง
นอกจากภายนอกจะงามแล้วภายในก็ยังมีอะไรให้ค้นหาอีกด้วย White Birch เป็นนาฬิกาแบบไม่ใช่ลิมิเต็ดเอดิชั่นรุ่นแรกที่ได้ใช้เครื่องออโต้รุ่นคาลิเบอร์ 9SA5 ซึ่งเป็นเครื่องรุ่นใหม่ถอดด้ามที่ Grand Seiko เปิดตัวเมื่อปี ค.ศ. 2020 เครื่อง 9SA5 เป็นเครื่องแบบไฮบีทหรือความถี่สูงที่มีอัตราการแกว่งของบาลานซ์วีลอยู่ที่ 36,000 ครั้งต่อชั่วโมง แต่ยังคงให้กำลังลานสำรองได้นานถึง 80 ชั่วโมงด้วยการใช้แบเรลสองตัววางต่อเนื่องกัน เครื่องรุ่นนี้ได้รับการปรับตั้งให้มีความเที่ยงตรงอยู๋ในเกณฑ์ +5/-3 วินาทีต่อวัน และมีเทคโนโลยีใหม่ๆ เช่น เอสเคปเมนท์แบบดูออลอิมพัลซ์ และบาลานซ์แบบฟรีสปรังพร้อมเคิร์ฟโอเวอร์คอยล์ ทั้งยังมีความหนาที่บางกว่าเครื่องไฮบีทรุ่นอื่นๆ ของ Grand Seiko ราว 15% ได้ด้วยการจัดวางแบเรลและเกียร์เทรนให้แผ่ตัวออกไปในแนวราบ
และแล้วในช่วงปลายปีเดียวกันนั้นเอง นาฬิการุ่น SLGH005 White Birch ก็ได้รับรางวัล GPHG หรือ Grand Prix d’Horlogerie de Genève ในหมวด Men’s Watch Prize ซึ่งแม้จะไม่ได้เป็น GPHG แรกของ Grand Seiko แต่ก็ทำให้นาฬิการุ่นนี้เป็นที่จับตามองของคนรักนาฬิกาทั่วโลกได้อย่างดี
หลังจากนั้น Grand Seiko จึงนำดีไซน์เปลือกต้นเบิร์ชนี้ไปต่อยอดอีกเป็นนาฬิกาอีกสองรุ่น ได้แก่ SLGH011 Green Birch ซึ่งออกมารับกับเทรนด์นาฬิกาหน้าเขียวได้อย่างลงตัวพอดี นาฬิการุ่นนี้ยังคงใช้ลวดลายเปลือกต้นเบิร์ชบนพื้นหน้าปัดเหมือนรุ่นแรกแต่ว่าเลือกทำเป็นสีเขียวด้วยการอ้างอิงถึงความเขียวชอุ่มของใบไม้ยามเมื่อมองเข้าไปในป่าต้นเบิร์ช เมื่อหน้าปัดมีสีเข้มเช่นนี้แล้วการอ่านค่าเวลาก็ยิ่งชัดเจนกว่ารุ่น White Birch ด้วยเพราะว่าหลักชั่วโมงและเข็มบอกเวลาสีเงินจะตัดกับพื้นสีเขียวได้อย่างเต็มที่ รายละเอียดทางด้านเทคนิคอื่นๆ ของรุ่น Green Birch จะเหมือนกับ White Birch หากจะต่างก็ตรงรูปแบบการขายที่ Green Birch จะมีวางจำหน่ายที่บูติคของ Grand Seiko เองเท่านั้น
รุ่นสุดท้ายที่จะมาเพิ่มความยากในการเลือกให้กับคุณก็คือ SLGH017 Night Birch ซึ่งมีหน้าปัดสีดำเพื่อสื่อถึงทิวทัศน์ของป่าต้นเบิร์ชในยามค่ำคืน ดูเผินๆ อาจจะต่างกันแค่สีหน้าปัด แต่ที่จริงแล้วต่างกว่านั้นมากเพราะว่าตัวเรือนและสายของนาฬิการุ่น Night Birch นี้ผลิตจากไทเทเนียม ไม่ได้เป็นสเตนเลสสตีลเหมือน White Birch และ Green Birch จุดนี้ถือว่าเป็นเซอร์ไพรส์จริงๆ และ Grand Seiko ก็สามารถขัดแต่งชิ้นงานที่เป็นไทเทเนียมนี้ให้ดูเงางามเท่ากับสเตนเลสสตีลได้เสียด้วย โทนสีที่ดูขรึมกว่าเล็กน้อยของวัสดุไทเทเนียมดูเข้ากันกับหน้าปัดสีดำอย่างลงตัว และใครที่ชอบใส่นาฬิกาเบาๆ ก็จะชอบตรงที่นาฬิการุ่นนี้เบากว่ารุ่นสเตนเลสสตีลถึงราว 35%

Now you can have a Grand Seiko birch watch with a green or black dial, in addition to the original white.

Having achieved excellence in terms of precision and craftsmanship, the Grand Seiko brand has spent the past few years creating the emotional foundation on which their watches can distinguish themselves from the competition. This has most to do with the “Nature of Time” concept which is a celebration of the Japanese spirituality of time, and a reflection of how one season morphs into the next.
To this end, the design and development team at Grand Seiko has been incredibly successful at incorporating minute details from the forest environment near their manufacture on the dial of a watch. One of the earliest examples of which is the now famous snowflake dial which was inspired by the uneven surface of a nearby mountain when it was covered by the snow.
Another signature dial pattern followed in February 2021 with the introduction of the SLGH005. This particular timepiece is universally and lovingly referred to as the White Birch because its dial designed and executed to resemble the outer bark of the tall and slender white birch or shirakaba trees in the forest near the Grand Seiko Shizukuishi Studio in Morioka, about 550 kilometers north of Tokyo. This intricate dial is created through multiple stages of stamping, brushing, plating and coating. It
is quite mesmerizing to look at with the seemingly random organic lines, but it is at the same time subtle and never too busy. Applied hour markers and prominent hands combine to further ensure legibility.
A member of the Elegance Collection, the SLGH005 White Birch is designed in the new Evolution 9 style which covers the three pillars of aesthetics, legibility and wearing comfort. This is evident in all angles of its case which measures 40 mm in diameter and 11.7 mm in thickness. Putting it on the wrist, you will notice right away that the wider lugs and the low center of gravity combine to give a more snug fit to the wrist. When looking from the side, one gets also the pleasure from how the case profile is slightly curved and hairline finish alternates precisely against the mirror finish. This case is essentially a celebration of the Grand Seiko 44GS watch of 1967, but with appropriate contemporary nuances to carry that heritage into a new era.
Of course, this externally impressive watch must be matched by a horologically significant movement. In fact, the white birch is the first non-limited edition watch to receive the new and improved Caliber 9SA5, first presented in 2020. This all-new, self-winding movement is a hi-beater with a frequency of 36,000 vph, yet offering a longer power reserve of 80 hours with two barrels arranged in sequence. Adjusted to the accuracy range of +5/-3 seconds per day, Calibre 9SA5 benefits from the new developed dual impulse escapement, and, the free-sprung balance with a curved overcoil. Additionally, the horizontal layout of the barrel and the gear train makes it possible for Calibre 9SA5 to be 15% slimmer than preceding Grand Seiko hi-beat movements.
Final exaltation for this SLGH005 White Birch came later in the same year in the form of a coveted award: the Men’s Watch Prize of the GPHG or Grand Prix d’Horlogerie de Genève. While it was not the first GPHG won by Grand Seiko, it did help put the spotlight on this particular watch model for the world to see.
Two more watches now join the White Birch, turning the design into a mini series of its own. The first one is the SLGH011 Green Birch which is a timely response to the green dial watch trend that is in full swing right now. On this watch, the bark pattern is retained, but it is graced with the color green from the verdant leaves of the white birch trees themselves. The contrast between the dial against the hour markers and the hands is even more superior than that of the original White Birch. All other specifications are the same, with one important remark that the Green Birch is sold exclusively at Grand Seiko boutiques only.
Lastly, there is the SLGH017 Night Birch to make your decision process somewhat more difficult. The black dial is meant to depict the white birch forest at night. But there is surprise in that the case and the bracelet are crafted from titanium, and yet finished to the same exacting standards as their stainless steel counterpart. The slightly darker sheen of titanium is a perfect match to the night-time dial, and the weight is reduced by approximately 35%, compared to the two other models in stainless steel.
