Piaget คว้ารางวัลใหญ่ของปีนี้ ในขณะที่ Bovet, Van Cleef & Arpels และ Breitling เป็นสามแบรนด์ที่ได้รางวัลแบบแยกสาขามากกว่าหนึ่งรางวัล

ถึงสภาพแวดล้อมทางด้านสังคมของโลกจะไม่เป็นใจ แต่การคัดเลือกนาฬิกาและพิจารณารางวัล Grand Prix d’Horlogerie de Genève หรือ GPHG ในปี 2020 ก็ยังเดินหน้าต่อเนื่องได้จนเป็นผลสำเร็จ ด้วยความร่วมมือร่วมใจของทุกฝ่ายที่เกี่ยวข้อง แม้กระนั้น พิธีมอบรางวัลในปีนี้ก็ยังต้องปรับเปลี่ยนเป็นรูปแบบปิด คือ มีแต่ตัวแทนของแบรนด์เข้าร่วมเท่านั้น โดยไม่เปิดให้บุคคลทั่วไปเข้าไปยัง Théâtre du Léman ที่เจนีวาในค่ำคืนของวันพฤหัสบดีที่ 12 พฤศจิกายน เพื่อให้เป็นไปตามข้อกำหนดทางด้านสาธารณสุขของทางการ และใช้วิธีเผยแพร่ภาพแบบสตรีมมิ่งทางอินเตอร์เนทแทน
การประกวดในปีนี้ประกอบด้วยรางวัลในสาขาต่างๆ 14 สาขา แต่ละสาขามีนาฬิกาเข้าชิง 6 เรือน จึงมีนาฬิกาที่เข้ารอบสุดท้ายทั้งหมด 84 เรือน เราเคยเขียนรายงานก่อนหน้านี้แล้วว่าในจำนวนนี้มีหลายแบรนด์ได้เข้าชิงหลายรางวัล ได้แก่ Piaget และ Breitling ที่มีนาฬิกาเข้ารอบสุดท้ายใน 5 สาขา Bovet, Bulgari และ Jacob & Co ได้เข้าแบรนด์ละ 4 สาขา แล้วยังมี Dior, Van Cleef & Arpels และ Hermès ที่ตามมาติดๆ อีกแบรนด์ละ 3 สาขา แต่ผลปรากฎว่า Jacob & Co, Dior และ Hermès ต้องกลับบ้านไปมือเปล่าในปีนี้ และมีเพียง Bovet, Van Cleef & Arpels และ Breitling ที่ได้มากกว่าหนึ่งรางวัล
รางวัลแรกของ Bovet คือ Ladies’ Watch Prize ที่ได้มาด้วยนาฬิกา Miss Audrey หน้าปัดลายกิโยเช่สีเขียวเป็นรูปดอกบัว Miss Audrey เป็นนาฬิกาที่แปลงร่างได้ กล่าวคือ หากถอดสายหนังออกก็จะวางบนโต๊ะเป็นนาฬิกาตั้งโต๊ะได้ หรือหากนำไปติดกับสายสร้อยหยกก็จะเอามาของคอได้อีกแบบ
Bovet อีกรุ่นที่ได้รางวัลในปีนี้ก็คือ Récital 26 Brainstorm Chapter 2 ในสาขา Mechanical Exception Watch นาฬิการุ่นนี้มีหน้าปัดบอกเวลาทรงโค้งที่ผลิตจากควอตซ์สีฟ้าทางด้านบน ฟลายอิ้งตูร์บิยองสองหน้าทางด้านล่าง มูนเฟสสามมิติความเที่ยงตรงสูงสำหรับซีกโลกเหนือและใต้ทางด้านซ้าย และฟังก์ชั่นเวิลด์ไทม์รูปทรงเดียวกันพร้อมเครื่องหมายชี้ชื่อเมืองทางด้านขวา
Van Cleef & Arpels ซึ่งเข้ารอบสุดท้ายใน 3 สาขานั้น ได้รางวัลจริงใน 2 สาขา ได้แก่ สาขา Jewellery Watch ด้วยนาฬิกาแนวซีเครทวอทช์ Frivole Secrète ซึ่งมีรูปทรงเป็นกำไล เวลาอยู่เฉยๆ ก็เหมือนเป็นเครื่องประดับ แต่ถ้าดันดอกไม้ที่วาววับขึ้นก็จะเผยให้เห็นหน้าปัดแบบปูเพชรเต็มซ่อนอยู่ข้างล่างเพื่อรอทำหน้าที่บอกเวลา
อีกรุ่นหนึ่งยิ่งอลังการ นั่นก็คือ Lady Arpels Soleil Féerique ที่ได้รับรางวัล Artistic Crafts Watch Prize หน้าปัดของนาฬิการุ่นนี้ใช้เทคนิคงานศิลป์หลากหลายชนิดเพื่อสร้างเป็นภาพที่เล่าเรื่องราวของสรวงสวรรค์และดวงดาราต่างๆ ไม่ว่าจะเป็นพลิคอาชูร์เอนาเมลหรือมาเธอร์ออฟเพิร์ลมาเคททรี ทั้งหมดแทรกกลางระหว่างแถบรัศมีของดวงอาทิตย์ที่ทำจากทอง เม็ดเอนาเมลทรงกลม เพชรและอัญมณีอื่นๆ
แบรนด์ที่สามที่ได้มากกว่าหนึ่งรางวัลในปีนี้ก็คือ Breitling ซึ่งเดิมทีนั้นได้เข้ารอบสุดท้ายถึง 5 สาขา แต่รุ่นที่ได้รางวัลจริง ได้แก่ Breitling Superocean Heritage ’57 Limited Edition II ในสาขา Petite Aiguille ซึ่งเป็นกลุ่มนาฬิการาคาระดับกลางช่วง 4,000-10,000 ฟรังก์สวิสที่คู่แข่งทั้งหมดทั้ง 6 รุ่นดูสูสีกันมากจนยากจะเดาได้ว่าแบรนด์อะไรจะเป็นผู้ชนะ
อีกรุ่นหนึ่งของ Breitling ก็คือ Superocean Automatic 48 Boutique Edition ในสาขา Diver’s นาฬิการุ่นนี้มีขนาดใหญ่โตถึง 48 มม. แต่ว่าน้ำหนักก็คงจะไม่มากนักเนื่องจากตัวเรือนสีดำที่เห็นนั้นเป็นไทเทเนียมเคลือบดีแอลซี และสายก็เป็นสายยาง จุดเด่นสำคัญของนาฬิการุ่นนี้ก็คือขอบตัวเรือนที่หมุนได้สองทิศทาง แต่ว่าบังคับให้อยู่กับที่เอาไว้โดยตัวล็อคทางด้านซ้ายของตัวเรือน
รางวัล Iconic Watch Prize ตกเป็นของ Bulgari Aluminium Chronograph ตามคาด นาฬิการุ่น Aluminium เดิมเปิดตัวเมื่อปี 1998 และ Bulgari นำกลับมาปรับโฉมอย่างเต็มรูปแบบในปีนี้ โดยยังคงดีไซน์แนวโมเดิร์นนิสท์ไว้ แต่เปลี่ยนวัสดุอลูมิเนียมอัลลอยที่ใช้ผลิตตัวเรือนเป็นสูตรใหม่ ขอบตัวเรือนก็ใช้ยางแบบที่ทนทานยิ่งกว่าเดิม และฝาหลังเป็นไทเทเนียมเคลือบดีแอลซีสีดำ
Tudor Black Bay Fifty-Eight Navy Blue เป็นนาฬิกาที่ใครๆ ก็พูดถึงอยู่แล้วตั้งแต่ที่ยังไม่ได้รางวัลอะไร ตอนนี้ยิ่งมีดีกรีดูดียิ่งกว่าเดิมเพราะชนะรางวัล Challenge Watch Prize ซึ่งสงวนไว้สำหรับนาฬิกาที่มีราคาขายไม่เกิน 4,000 ฟรังก์สวิสเท่านั้น Black Bay Fifty-Eight เป็นนาฬิกาที่ทุกคนใส่ได้ด้วยตัวเรือนขนาด 39 มม. พอทำเป็นสีน้ำเงินอย่างนี้ก็มีคุณผู้หญิงให้ความสนใจเป็นจำนวนมากเพราะดูดุน้อยลงกว่าสีดำแบบเดิม ดังนั้นเราจึงเขียนมาตั้งแต่แรกว่าเป็นนาฬิกาที่คนมีแฟนควรซื้อเพราะเรือนเดียวใส่ได้สองคน ยิ่งกว่าคุ้ม
ในบรรดานาฬิกาทั้ง 6 รุ่นที่เข้ารอบสุดท้ายในสาขา Chronograph ก็มี H. Moser & Cie Streamliner Flyback Chronograph Automatic ตัวเรือนสเตนเลสสตีลขนาด 42.3 มม. รุ่นที่ได้รางวัลนี้ที่มีหน้าปัดเรียบเกลี้ยงที่สุดแล้ว เนื่องจากเครื่องที่ Agenhor พัฒนาขึ้นเพื่อใช้ในนาฬิการุ่นนี้ได้รับการออกแบบให้มีเข็มนาทีและเข็มวินาทีของระบบจับเวลาซ้อนอยู่บนเข็มบอกเวลาทั้งสอง การแสดงค่าของระบบจับเวลาจึงใหญ่เต็มหน้าปัดและไม่ต้องมีการทดเลขแต่อย่างใด โดยจะจับเวลาได้นานสูงสุด 60 นาที
รางวัล Chronometry น่าจะเป็นสาขาที่โหวตยากที่สุดสำหรับคณะผู้ทรงคุณวุฒิและคณะกรรมการของ GPHG นั่นเป็นเพราะว่าแต่ละคนก็ต้องโหวตตามคำบรรยายลักษณะการออกแบบเครื่องนาฬิกาเท่านั้น โดยที่ไม่ได้มีประสบการณ์จริงกับนาฬิกาแต่ละรุ่นที่เข้ารอบ กฎของ GPHG ในสาขานี้ระบุว่า นาฬิกาที่จะได้รับรางวัลจะต้อง “มีตูร์บิยองอย่างน้อยหนึ่งตัว และ/หรือ มีเอสเคปเมนท์แบบพิเศษ และ/หรือ มีพัฒนาการอื่นใดเพื่อยกระดับความเที่ยงตรง” สุดท้ายรางวัลนี้ตกเป็นของ Ferdinand Berthoud FB 2RE.2 ซึ่งไม่เพียงมีระบบส่งกำลังลานแบบฟิวซีแอนด์เชน แต่ยังมีกลไกเรมองตัวร์เสริมด้วยเพื่อควบคุมแรงบิดของลานให้นิ่งและสม่ำเสมอที่สุดเท่าที่จะเป็นไปได้
นาฬิกาที่ได้รับรางวัล Calendar and Astronomy Watch Prize ในปีนี้ก็คือ Vacheron Constantin Overseas Perpetual Calendar Ultra-Thin Skeleton ซึ่งคงไม่ต้องบรรยายสรรพคุณอะไรมากเนื่องจากชื่อรุ่นก็บอกครบอยู่แล้ว นาฬิกาตัวเรือนพิงค์โกลด์รุ่นนี้มีขนาด 41.5 มม. และมาพร้อมสายสามชนิด คือ สายทอง สายหนังและสายยางซึ่งเจ้าของนาฬิกาสามารถสับเปลี่ยนไปมาได้เองตามความต้องการในแต่ละวัน
สุดท้าย คือ Piaget ที่ว่าได้รับการเสนอชื่อเข้าชิงรางวัลใน 5 สาขา แต่สุดท้ายมาได้เป็นรางวัลใหญ่รางวัลเดียวเลย นั่นก็คือ รางวัล “Aiguille d’Or” Grand Prix ด้วยนาฬิกา Altiplano Ultimate Concept โดย Piaget เผยโฉมนาฬิกา Altiplano Ultimate Concept ในลักษณะโปรโตไทป์เป็นครั้งแรกเมื่อปี ค.ศ. 2018 ที่งาน SIHH โดยมีความหนาของนาฬิกาทั้งเรือน (ไม่ใช่แค่เครื่อง) เพียง 2 มม. เท่านั้น ที่เป็นเช่นนั้นได้ก็เพราะว่า Piaget ใช้ตัวเรือนเพื่อเป็นฐานโครงสร้างของเครื่องไปในตัว แม้แต่เม็ดมะยมก็ยังเป็นแบบซ่อนซึ่งเรียบเนียนไปกับตัวเรือนจนมองไม่เห็นเวลาไม่ใช้งาน
กฎของ GPHG ข้อ 4.2 ระบุว่าตัวแทนหนึ่งคน (เช่น ประธาน เจ้าของหรือซีอีโอ) ของแบรนด์ที่ได้รับรางวัลใหญ่ “Aiguille d’Or” Grand Prix ในปีใดๆ จะต้องมาทำหน้าที่เป็นหนึ่งในคณะกรรมการในปีถัดมา และแบรนด์นั้นจะไม่ได้เข้าร่วมการแข่งขันในปีดังกล่าว ดังนั้นในปีนี้ Audemars Piguet ซึ่งเป็นผู้ชนะรางวัลใหญ่เมื่อปีที่แล้วจึงส่งมอบหน้าที่ดังกล่าวต่อให้ Piaget ในปีนี้

Despite less than ideal circumstances, the 2020 edition of Grand Prix d’Horlogerie de Genève pushed forward with the contribution of all parties concerned. The efforts culminated in the award presentation ceremony at Théâtre du Léman in Geneva in the evening of Thursday 12 November, which, in compliance with current health regulations, did not admit audience as usual but was broadcasted via a live stream to the world.
We have noted previously that several brands had multiple nominations this year among the 84 watches in 14 categories. Particularly, there were Piaget and Breitling with as many as five nominated watches each; Bovet, Bulgari and Jacob & Co with four each; and, Dior, Van Cleef & Arpels and Hermès trailing with three nominations each. The eventual results are not in favour of Jacob & Co, Dior and Hermès which went home empty handed. But Bovet, Van Cleef & Arpels and Breitling did win twice.
Bovet won first with the Ladies’ Watch Prize with a Miss Audrey watch whose guilloché pattern on the green dial is executed after the motif of a lotus flower. With the leather strap removed, the watch case can be transformed into a table clock or attached to a long jade bead necklace as desired.
Another Bovet, the Récital 26 Brainstorm Chapter 2, won the Mechanical Exception Watch Prize. This timepiece boasts a time-telling dial made of convex blue quartz at the top and a double-face flying tourbillon at the bottom. Flanking both sides are a three dimensional, high-precision moon phase indicator for both the northern and southern hemispheres on the left, and a similarly shaped world time indicator with a handy city index on the right.
Out of the three nominations, Van Cleef & Arpels bagged two. In the Jewellery Watch category, the winner is the Frivole Secrète watch. This bangle-style timpiece in yellow gold is a secret watch whose diamond-paved dial is revealed once the mirror-polished petals covering it are swung up.
In the Artistic Crafts Watch category, the Lady Arpels Soleil Féerique emerged victorious. The poetry of its three dimensional dial which talks about the heavens and the stars is realised through the use of several techniques including plique-à-jour enamel and white mother-of-pearl sunrays marquetry in between gold sunrays, enamel beads, diamonds and other precious stones.
The third brand to have won more than one prize this year is Breitling. Originally nominated in five categories, it is the Breitling Superocean Heritage ’57 Limited Edition II that won the Petite Aiguille prize for watches in the medium price range of CHF 4,000-10,000. This is one of those categories where all six nominated watches seem to stand more or less equal chance of winning.
That is also the case for the Diver’s category where Breitling also won with the Superocean Automatic 48 Boutique Edition. This is a massive watch at 48 mm but the weight should not be too overwhelming as the black case is made of DLC-coated titanium and as it is worn on a rubber strap. Note that the bezel is bidirectional but secured in place by the lock on the left side of the case.
The Iconic Watch Prize was quite naturally won by the Bulgari Aluminium Chronograph. First introduced in 1998, the Aluminium line by Bulgari makes a comeback this year, retaining the original modernist concept but with a new aluminium alloy for the case, more durable rubber for the bezel and titanium caseback with black DLC coating.
The Tudor Black Bay Fifty-Eight Navy Blue was already a very popular watch before it won anything. Now, its pedigree is enhanced with the Challenge Watch Prize, reserved for watches with a retail price of under CHF 4,000. At 39 mm, the Black Bay Fifty-Eight will look good on all wrists. And the blue aesthetics makes it even more wearable by ladies – the population known to “borrow” their boyfriend’s or husband’s watches from time to time.
Among the six nominated watches in the Chronograph category, the H. Moser & Cie Streamliner Flyback Chronograph Automatic has the cleanest dial as it is free of any counter. This is because the Agenhor-developed movement inside this 42.3 mm watch in stainless steel positions the chronograph second and minute hands on top of the regular time-telling hour and minute hands. Intuitive chronograph reading is thus achieved for a duration of up to 60 minutes.
The Chronometry category was likely a difficult vote for the GPHG Academy members and jury as judgment must be made chiefly on the basis of movement architecture description, not real world experience. The rule proposes that the winning timepiece should have “at least one tourbillon and/or a special escapement and/or another development improving chronometry (precision timekeeping)”. The prize was finally won by the Ferdinand Berthoud FB 2RE.2 which features not only the fusee-and-chain transmission but also the remontoir for the most stable and regular torque across the power reserve range.
Winning the Calendar and Astronomy Watch Prize this year is the Vacheron Constantin Overseas Perpetual Calendar Ultra-Thin Skeleton. The model name said everything except for the fact that the 41.5 mm watch in pink gold comes with the most practical interchangeability of the gold bracelet, the leather strap and the rubber strap.
While the five nominated watches of Piaget did not win any of those categories, their Altiplano Ultimate Concept watch did snatch the “Aiguille d’Or” Grand Prix! Originally revealed to the press as a prototype watch at the 2018 edition of SIHH the timepiece measured only 2 mm in thickness because the case itself already served as the foundation for the movement – it even had an integrated winding crown that disappears from view when not in use.
According to Article 4.2 of the GPHG regulation, one representative (president, owner or CEO) of the brand that wins the “Aiguille d’Or” Grand Prix in a given year must serve as a jury for the following year’s edition, and the said brand must be precluded from the competition. That torch is being passed from Audemars Piguet (2019 winner) to Piaget (2020 winner).
