ข่าวใหญ่ของ Girard-Perregaux เมื่อช่วงก่อนสิ้นเดือนกุมภาพันธ์คือการเป็นพาร์ทเนอร์อย่างเป็นทางการกับบริษัทผู้ผลิตรถยนต์ Aston Martin และทีมฟอร์มูลาร์วัน Aston Martin Cognizant Formula One แต่ในเวลานั้นยังไม่มีการเปิดตัวนาฬิการุ่นที่จะเป็นตัวแทนของความสัมพันธ์ดังกล่าว จนกระทั่ง Girard-Perregaux พร้อมเผยโฉม Tourbillon with Three Flying Bridges – Aston Martin Edition ในช่วงเวลาเพียงไม่กี่วันก่อนที่นิตยสารฉบับนี้จะวางแผง เราจึงขอใช้โอกาสนี้สัมภาษณ์ซีอีโอ แพททริค พรูนิโอซ์ในหัวข้อต่างๆ ที่เกี่ยวข้อง

การดูแลแบรนด์ที่มีเรื่องราวมากมายอย่าง Girard-Perregaux และ Ulysse Nardin ก็เหมือนกับการเป็นพ่อคนครับ ผมแบ่งเวลาให้ทั้งสองตามความจำเป็นของช่วงสถานการณ์ เพราะทั้งสองแบรนด์ก็อยู่ในคนละขั้นตอนของการวิวัฒนาการด้วย และในเรื่องบุคลิกก็แตกต่างกันเป็นอย่างมาก ต้องยอมรับครับว่าบางทีก็ต้องพยายามแยกร่างอยู่เหมือนกัน แต่โชคดีที่ผมมีทีมงานที่มีความสามารถอยู่ในทั้งสองแบรนด์ การแบ่งภาคจึงง่ายที่สุดเท่าที่จะเป็นไปได้แล้ว
สินทรัพย์ที่มีความสำคัญที่สุดของ Girard-Perregaux คืออะไรครับ
ประวัติศาสตร์ 230 ปีของแบรนด์ที่ก็ต้องเรียกว่าเป็นสินทรัพย์ที่สำคัญของแบรนด์นะครับ แต่การนำประวัติศาสตร์นั้นไปตีความ และการให้ความเคารพต่องานฝีมือที่เกิดขึ้นตลอดช่วงเวลานั้นคือสิ่งที่ทำให้เราแตกต่างจากแบรนด์อื่นๆ Girard-Perregaux เป็นผู้ผลิตนาฬิการะดับสูงมาตั้งแต่ปี ค.ศ. 1791 ผลงานของเรามีความหลากหลายและโดดเด่น อย่างเช่นนาฬิกา Tourbillon with Three Bridges อายุ 160 ปี เรื่อยมาจนถึงนาฬิกา Laureato ในสมัยใหม่ เราเป็นผู้วาดภาพความเป็นไปของแต่ละยุคสมัยมาโดยตลอด สำหรับคนที่รู้จักนาฬิกาจริงๆ นะครับ

The timepiece is the first to symbolise the partnership between the two entities.

Just before the end of February, Girard-Perregaux announced that they are partnering with legendary carmaker Aston Martin and their Formula One team. But it is not until just a few days before this June issue hits the stands that the first collaboration watch is introduced. We talk to CEO Patrick Pruniaux who has insights to share on the partnership and beyond.
You have dual responsibilities at two brands within the group. How do you split your presence and working hours?
I like to compare leading two storied brands as different as Girard-Perregaux and Ulysse Nardin to parenthood. I split my time according to the needs of the moment as both brands are at different stages of their evolution and have such different identities. Admittedly sometimes it can be a bit of a juggling act, but thankfully I have very capable teams in both manufactures who make the transition as seamless as one could hope for.
What did you see as the single most important asset of Girard-Perregaux?
Obviously a 230-year history is a major asset in and of itself, but the interpretation of this history, and the respect of the craftsmanship that evolved during it which really sets us apart. Since 1791, Girard-Perregaux is a high-horology atelier, creating a diverse range of distinct timepieces from the almost 160-year-old Tourbillon with Three Bridges, to the modern-day Laureato, always shaping the now – for those in the know.
What is the greatest joy you derive from the collaboration with Aston Martin?
So far it has been a joy to witness the common themes that have come up in unexpected ways and at the same time, the different approaches our teams have to overcome similar problems, be they in terms of ergonomics, differences in scale, usage or even material development. And what’s more, all done via Zoom!
Who or what team came upon the fact that titanium was discovered in the home country of Aston Martin in the same year Girard-Perregaux was founded?
This was a lovely coincidence both teams happened upon when we began discussing in more detail what we wanted the timepiece to look like from an aesthetic and functional perspective. You find several subtle nods to both the automotive and horological within this timepiece: titanium is obviously a material commonly used in both worlds due to its solidity and lightweight.
DLC coating on the case and the blacked-out elements in PVD inside evoke to me the matte black finishes one might expect to find on a custom Aston Martin. The stripe running through the centre of the strap also evokes racing stripes or piping on Aston Martin seats. Our world premiered Rubber Alloy used on this stripe, is as well given that Aston Martin obviously uses rubber as well as gold in rare occasions in its custom vehicles. The list goes on!
Will we see Girard-Perregaux clocks in the dashboard of a future Aston Martin model?
Why not! In all seriousness, we are at the beginning of our partnership and at this stage totally open to where it can lead us. But because both brands are truly a natural fit, you will already see our wall clocks on the walls of some dealerships in 2021, and our watches on the wrists of certain very well-known drivers.
Please tell us a bit more about the virtual manufacture visit.
Given this is our 230th anniversary year, it was more important to us than ever before to remain exclusive to some degree, but also make discovering our manufacture as seamless and inclusive as possible. Over the past year where personal interaction was limited for reasons beyond our control, the creation of a digital component to everything we do was paramount, which is why we are offering this phygital format as a permanent channel. But to fully understand the magnitude of the work that went into refurbishing our GP Villa and manufacture, you will have to come to Switzerland soon to see for yourself.
